A recent survey indicates that supportive housing is not a comprehensive solution for mentally ill homeless individuals. The survey reveals an increase in homelessness in New York City, particularly among asylum seekers. Jenna D'Angeles from CBS2 interviewed the commissioner for the Department of Social Services, who highlighted a significant rise in shelter system usage, largely attributed to the asylum crisis. Supportive housing initiatives aim to offer permanent housing and services to homeless individuals, but progress has been slow. Mayor Eric Adams' plan to create 15,000 supportive housing units by 2028 is lagging, with only 3,853 units opened so far. The demand for housing far exceeds the available units, exacerbated by the influx of asylum seekers. Critics argue that supportive housing, while beneficial, is not sufficient for individuals with severe mental health issues. There is a call for more comprehensive solutions, including psychiatric hospitalization and law enforcement intervention for those breaking the law. The high cost of construction and limited resources further complicate efforts to address homelessness through housing alone. #homeless #progressive #newyork --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

“I do not suck things up very well … I have to talk about it.” And talk about it she does. Whether it's her PTSD diagnosis from repeated exposure as a reporter to horrific events or viewer comments about her appearance, Marcella Raymond is fearless in the way she expresses her anguish or exasperation. She shares with Jeanne how she coped with the heartache on deadline; when she knew it was time to leave TV news; how her love of journalism started; why she became an entrepreneur; and why she's optimistic about her future. Marcella was born in NYC and moved to Chicago when she was ten. She went to Catholic grade school and high school in west suburban Downers Grove. She graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Broadcast Journalism degree and her first reporting job was in Rockford, IL. She landed in Chicago after two years in Ohio, first at CBS2 then WGN. She retired in June 2023 after 25 years on-the-air. She covered President Obama's first inauguration, the blizzard of 2011, and the murder trial of Bolingbrook cop Drew Peterson. But the stories she loves the most are those that involve ordinary Chicagoans! She's transitioned from journalism to public relations and now has a small PR company, Marcella Raymond Media, and is excited to watch it grow. Suzanne Le Mignot serves as CBS2 Chicago's weekend news morning anchor and weekday reporter. Le Mignot joined the station in 1995 as a freelance reporter and became a full-time reporter in 1999. She has covered a wide variety of stories, with a particular concentration on community related events, including serving as a news correspondent for CBS2′s Southside neighborhood newsroom from 1999-2000. Prior to joining CBS2, Le Mignot was a news anchor and reporter for WBBM-AM Newsradio 780 (1994-99). She was a news anchor and reporter at WGN-AM (1996) and at WTMJ-AM in Milwaukee (1995-96), before returning to WBBM-AM in 1996. In 2007, LeMignot was honored by The Associated Press in the hard news feature category for her investigative report entitled "Tracking Your Security." Her investigation uncovered that bomb-sniffing dogs at Chicago's Metra train stations could not detect the passing scent of explosives. As a result of that story, Illinois passed a law that requires dog handlers to undergo 180 hours of rigorous training and to pass a new state exam. The report also earned LeMignot a Peter Lisagor Award in the in-depth reporting or series category and a Herman Kogan Award from the Chicago Bar Association. Le Mignot has won several other industry awards: a local and national Emmy for her breaking news reports on the Blue Line derailment (2008); a local and national Emmy Award for her breaking news reports about the death of Pope John Paul II (2005); the Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Award (1997); two Peter Lisagor Awards (1994 and 1996) and the National Association of Black Journalists Leadership Award, while a student (1993). She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and a Board Member of the National Association of Black Journalists Chicago Chapter. Le Mignot has served as a mentor and volunteer at Bunche Elementary School in Chicago's Englewood community. She regularly held workshops and planned field trips centered on building self-esteem for young girls. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago & Northwest Indiana. Additionally, she is on the Board of Directors of PAWS Chicago, the largest no-kill animal shelter in the Midwest. Le Mignot helped set up the first humane education program with PAWS in 2003. PAWS visits Chicago area schools, using the program to teach elementary school children about the importance of nurturing animals. The program is also used by the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago. Le Mignot has served on the Board of Directors of the Better Boys Foundation. The organization provides educational assistance to boys and girls in the North Lawndale community on Chicago's west side. Le Mignot is the recipient of the National Civil Rights Library 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in journalism. In 2017, she was inducted into the National Civil Rights Hall of Fame. In 2017, Le Mignot also received the "We Dream in Color" Michelle Obama Humanitarian Award for her reports that led to positive change in the lives of those who have endured challenging times. In 2019, Le Mignot won first place in the Chicago Journalists Association Sarah Brown Boyden Award Competition in the Public Service category for her "Misidentified Man" series of reports. The day before Le Mignot received the award, Senate Bill SB2309 was introduced on November 14, 2019. The bill would make fingerprinting and DNA testing mandatory in John and Jane Doe cases in Illinois. In 2021 she received The Shantieya Smith "We Fight for Her Award" by MOVE and YOVE (Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere and Youth Opposed to Violence Everywhere) for her reports bringing attention to missing and murdered black girls and women in Chicago. She was also chosen by Better Magazine in 2021 as one of the top 10 Black Women of Impact in Chicago and chosen by the America Nation Multicultural World Foundation as the 2021 Multicultural Woman of the Year. She has served as a Trustee of Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities, an organization that supports children and adults with developmental disabilities in DuPage and Cook counties. Le Mignot is also on the Board of Trustees of Lifeline Humanitarian Organization. The group provides medical supplies and aid for war orphans throughout former Yugoslavia. She's on the Advisory Council for Smile Train, an organization that provides life-saving cleft-palate surgery for children in need around the world.

Hour 4: How many New York baseball teams will we be talking about this fall? Gio guesses zero. For every bad team that goes on a run there are a ton that stink all the way through the end of the season. The Yankees have hope but are not playing to the standard we have for the Yankees. So much will come down to when Aaron Judge comes back. The Mets ruined any momentum they could have had with their recent 4 game losing streak. The Mets would have to play almost exactly like last year's team to make a run this year. It's a large enough sample size this year to believe they aren't capable of playing that well. CLo returns for his final update of the day. The Yankees lost a game and series and Aaron Boone told a reporter to “save it” with that question. The Mets only scored 3 runs this weekend. At least they won a game. Gio has a story of our friend Pete Bellotti just missing out on meeting his favorite actor, Paul Rudd. Vic Dibitetto posted about the reaction to his clip being played on the show and then calling into the show. CLo has a Moment of the Day featuring Jerry asking questions he probably regrets. In the final segment of the day, Gio and Jerry offer condolences to the family of Elise Finch from CBS News. Would you legally represent an alleged serial killer?
Hour 1: It's a beautiful summer Monday after a rainy Sunday and the New York baseball teams returned from the All-Star break with a dud. The Mets are done and the Yankees are on the road to nowhere. Gio spent the weekend partying with his father-in-law. They started early Friday afternoon and stayed out very late Friday night. Gio left a sliding glass door open and a lot of mosquitos and flies made their way inside. The Yankees bullpen melted down on Sunday. We know what the Yankees problems are but not if they can be fixed midseason. When will Aaron Judge come back and how close to 100% will he be when he does return? Fans are counting down the days until football season starts. CLo is in for Jerry and begins with the Yankees blowing a game in Colorado and losing another series to a bad team. Aaron Boone got very testy with the media. Jerry doesn't think we appreciate Gerrit Cole enough. The Mets salvaged the finale of their series against the Dodgers. Max Scherzer actually pitched very well. Jerry was at a baseball field with a mound that wasn't centered. Today is deadline day for Saquon Barkley and other franchise-tagged players. DeAndre Hopkins took more money to sign with the Titans. Gio had a problem with the coverage of the Scottish Open. Steph Curry wins at everything. In the final segment of the hour, Gio shares some top - and bizarre - headlines with Jerry. What words could Gio tweet out of context without getting in trouble? We've grown numb to cursing. Does Gio curse more than the average person? Jerry got duped by a well-known scalper and Gio scalped a fake ticket to the Aaron Boone game. Hour 2: How realistic is it that Max Scherzer and/or Justin Verlander can be traded in the next two weeks? Gio would find a way to unload Scherzer. Jerry wonders if Scherzer or Verlander would even waive their no-trade clauses for certain contenders. Maybe these pitchers think they owe it to Steve Cohen to stick it out with the Mets. Will there be a market correction on the price for starting pitchers? Starters make too much money and good relievers don't make enough. CLo returns for an update but first Jerry asks if golfing has cut into Gio's boat time and Gio shares a story about a boat mishap. He's losing it with his boat. Some guys out on the water in Suffolk are not familiar with Gio or WFAN. John Flaherty did play-by-play for Sunday's Yankees loss. What happened to Anthony Rizzo? The Yankees bullpen is going through a tough stretch. The Mets somehow managed to win a game. What happened to Pete Alonso? Max Scherzer had a lot to say about mud in his cleats and his landing spot. In the final segment of the hour, Gio explains that he knows his slip problem is a first-world problem but it's still frustrating. We hear from callers who feel Gio's pain. Gio and Jerry discuss other embarrassing moments to have strangers witness. Hour 3: It's deadline day for Saquon Barkley and the Giants. Will they come to an agreement on a long-term deal? Gio thinks Saquon will have to cave and take a deal he doesn't want because he, unfortunately, won't get a better offer down the road. The Giants offer isn't what Saquon wants but it offers the most security. Jerry thanks there's room for compromise between the two sides. It stinks that running backs are forced to live in this devalued world but it's reality. The disparity between QB and RB contracts is huge. Saquon is fighting an unwinnable battle. Gio and Jerry agree the Giants have a chance to be very good this season. It's great that we can actually look forward to football this year. CLo returns but first Gio discusses eating beaver after killing it while hunting. What careers earn more than running backs? Joe Benigno did a Q&A with the New York Post. The Yankees bullpen blew two leads in Colorado yesterday. The Rockies tried to hand the Yankees the series with horrible fielding mistakes. The Mets found a way on Sunday and avoided getting swept. The Wimbledon final was epic and had some interesting celebrity drama surrounding attendees as well. There were some strange sounds too. In the final segment of the hour, Gio is disappointed in who was chosen to be the “Golden Bachelor” because he's too attractive and too cool. Gio wanted to see a regular guy on the show. Gio could program an amazing TV network. “Sometimes you've got to choose to be happy.” When Jackie Kostek realized she wasn't going to get her dream job anchoring and reporting in Chicago, she decided to believe in herself and move to Las Vegas where she could do both full-time. Her leap of faith paid off; after less than three years on the air there, she's back in the Windy City, feeling stronger than ever about her choices and what's ahead. She shares with Jeanne how she knew it was time to go, the two methods she uses to help find herself and what she really wants, how coping with hair loss gave her power, what being in alignment means for her, and why she feels it's such a privilege to tell other people's stories while working on her own. About Jackie: Jackie Kostek is an anchor and reporter at CBS Chicago, covering news and sports. She was formerly the weekend anchor and reporter at KTNV in Las Vegas and a multimedia journalist at WCIU in Chicago. She was also the in-arena and digital host for the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Fire. She has produced episodes of PBS' national travel show, Family Travel with Colleen Kelly and served as the Director of Photography for an independent documentary about online harassment. She has contributed to AJ Plus, Bill Moyers, Monocle and MSNBC. She is an alum of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Teach For America, and the University of Kansas.

For months, CBS2 has been reporting on landlords of smaller properties, "mom and pop" landlords, who say their tenants have not paid rent in years. The problem was exacerbated by the pandemic. Monday, CBS2's Natalie Duddridge spoke with an elderly landlord who still can't evict, even though the eviction moratorium was lifted months ago. "It's disrupting my family and everything else. It's a nightmare," Bill Pantano said. We first interviewed Pantano early in 2021. The 96-year-old landlord said his tenant had not paid rent since September 2019. "I've spent $130,000. I cannot afford to keep this man on this property," Pantano said.Join this channel to get access to perks:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHm8vWol8eNjTJZSjq2jaLQ/joinLIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos everyday. https://bit.ly/3KBUDSK
