Realize the Dream is a visionary movement aimed at uniting communities to achieve an extraordinary goal: completing 100 million hours of service by January 15, 2029—the 100th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth. Inspired by Dr. King's unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and a compassionate society, Realize the Dream embodies his vision of a strong, unified foundation for all. The initiative seeks to empower hundreds of thousands of teachers and bring hope to over six million students in underfunded schools across the United States. As a company deeply committed to education and literacy for every child, Scholastic has partnered with this transformative mission. And as part of this commitment, Scholastic will be donating half a million dollars' worth of books over the course of the initiative to help support Realize the Dream's ongoing programming. Late last year, Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King visited Scholastic Headquarters in New York City to discuss the initiative in a conversation moderated by award-winning author, and Scholastic Vice President and Editor, Andrea Davis Pinkney. In today's episode, the Kings and Andrea are back, joining guest-host Billy DiMichele in the studio for another compelling conversation about Realize the Dream! → Resources About Realize the Dream: Learn more about the initiative. As we're working together, we're doing something that's bigger than ourselves, in a climate, which is divided, this will hopefully begin to create the beginning elements of some level of community.” “What we really want is not to share what someone should do. What we want is people to decide for themselves what they want to do…What we know is when one is passionate about something, they're going to do a better job.” “Civility is kindness. Civility is how we say, what we say. Because we can say it in a constructive way, or we can say it in a destructive way. And we need to be creating the climate for constructiveness.” “My greatest hope is that our nation becomes closer and not to just Realize the Dream, but people will realize their own dreams in a way that compliments everyone.” Arndrea Waters King, social justice leader and President of the nonprofit Drum Major Institute “One person can make a difference. All together we can change the world.” “It is important, again, for all of us to find ourselves within the King legacy, but also for everyone to understand that if you're doing something for someone else, if you're serving your community, you are doing something to realize the dream of Martin Luther King Jr.” “Acknowledging the shared humanity of us all, at its core, is the foundational principle of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King's work…As a humanity, we are all brothers and sisters. And that to me is what the cornerstone of what this movement is.” *Andrea Davis Pinkney, award-winning author and Vice President and Executive Editor, Scholastic Trade Publishing * “[Kids] want to take action. They're big-hearted. And they know what it means to work together.” “As well all know, books change lives. Books spark conversations. And that's what We Dream a World does. It's changed lives. It has sparked conversations.” “Stories connect us. They unify us. They bring us together. In the case of the book, We Dream a World, it's a jewel and a tool. It's a jewel because it glistens, because its beautifully illustrated, because young people will engage with it and its beautifully written. It's a tool, because it's a way that young people can have the roadmap to say, “how do I make a change?” → Special Thanks Producers: Maxine Osa, Anne Sparkman, Allyson Barkan Sound Engineer: S. On the twenty- fourth episode of ATFT, I talk with artist Bernardo Goya! Bernardo is a Jacksonville- based artist and filmmaker with an experimental style. He has directed several films, many of them shorts, including Goodbye Channel 99, Sweet Temptation, and, his latest short being, In Eros We Trust. Bernardo's films have been featured at several film festivals including Sleeping Giant and Creative Veins. Goodbye Channel 99 actually earned the award for “Best Use of Music” Award at the Hysteria Film Festival in St. Louis the day we recorded this episode! Bernardo is keeping his next project under wraps but if it is anything like his previous films, it is sure to be creative, artistic, and something you've never seen before. I first met Bernardo on the set of our mutual friend, Craig “ienne!” Pedroza's, new short film We Dream of Eden! Several months later, Bernardo reached out to ask me if I'd record a voice narration for his short, In Eros We Trust (so if you listen closely you may hear a familiar voice!), which then led me to ask him if he and his brother Freddy would like to be guests on the Killers of the Flower Moon episode (Episode 13), an episode which nearly didn't happen without their help! This time around, Bernardo is back six months later for an interview after my original plans for Episode 24 fell through… it was a good one and will be rescheduled! This episode was recorded on June 29, 2024. To watch Bernardo's films, subscribe to his Gumroad account under the username IvoryTower333. Here is the link to his Gumroad channel!: https://ivorytower333.gumroad.com/l/phrtj?_gl=1*qncfq1*_ga*MTY0MTg4MDg2MC4xNzA0MzQwMjk5*_ga_6LJN6D94N6*MTcxOTU0MDMzMi42NC4xLjE3MTk1NDAzMzguMC4wLjA. Bernardo is planning to release a Blu- Ray DVD of his shorts towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year. He will be selling this DVD around Jacksonville and on his website, https://theboysfrombohemiangrove.godaddysites.com/, so stay tuned for that forthcoming announcement! In this episode, Bernardo's passion and knowledge for film is on full display as he discusses his appreciation for certain prominent figures like Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman, his DVD collection, and love for the beloved Jacksonville theater, SunRay Cinema, which unfortunately just recently closed down. Bernardo also talks about his encounter with John Waters, how he crafts his films both in production and in post- production, and the different eras he has laid out for his work in film, which tends to come with a name change! On the twentieth episode of ATFT, I talk with director Craig Ienne Pedroza! Craig is a Jacksonville filmmaker who fell in love with cinema at a young age and his passion for film has only grown through the years. Musicals like The Court Jester, Singin' in the Rain, and The Sound of Music were some of the first musicals that have impacted him to this day. His favorite film is Damian Chazelle's La La Land. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Film & Production last year and has won both the Best Micro Short at Infinity Fest and Best Jax 180 at the Apologia Film Festival for his short film "The Candles are Wilting", which you can watch on YouTube by clicking here!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXecwF6x0xU. This is Craig's third guest appearance on the wide release of ATFT! He was previously a guest on the episodes #FilmTwitter Trends: Directors edition and the 2024 Oscars Special. Overall, this is his fifth guest appearance on the show. This episode marks the first time I have interviewed a friend on ATFT! Craig and I became friends through our mutual friend, Taylor, who helped recruit him to join our team of making a short film. Craig was incredibly helpful and gave me advice I really needed at the time amidst the stressful environment. We share similar interests in film, especially in regards to Wong Kar- Wai. Two years later, we often talk or text about film and I love learning of his often fascinating, unique takes. When I started this podcast two years ago, it was always my intention to interview my friends but I grew somewhat hesitant since I expected I would know many of the answers to the questions asked. I ended up learning so much about Craig and I couldn't be happier with what became of this episode. This episode was recorded on May 10, 2024. Craig's musical drama short, "We Dream of Eden", has been long anticipated. The film is about dreams and how a stranger can have a strong impact on another. The story is told through a young boy, Noah's (Aisha Christopher Williams jr), eyes and his fractured memories of the turbulent relationship between up- and- coming star July (Lina Smith) and her boyfriend Rowan (Jadon Le). Lina Smith has been a guest on two previously released episodes: Horror films and the 2024 Oscars Special! I was very fortunate to work on this film as a script supervisor but more so capturing behind the scenes footage. Craig's goal for the film is for the audience to leave the theater with a certain, individualized and impactful feeling. Craig led a positive and collaborative set filled with people who share a deep passion for film. "We Dream of Eden" will be submitted to a few film festivals so stay updated on when and where you can watch the short film by following @iennefilm on both Instagram and YouTube as well as his production company KAIBIGANfilm on Instagram. Craig gives a very real, honest interview that spans from his early interest in film thanks to his grandparents and mother to reflecting on his previous work to his boldest project yet, "We Dream of Eden". His story and work ethic is sure to inspire aspiring filmmakers. In this episode, Craig and I also talk about the brilliance of 12 Angry Men, the challenges of filmmaking, and how he opened up and became more social thanks to three factors including film and his girlfriend Lina. She was a news anchor and reporter at WGN-AM (1996) and at WTMJ-AM in Milwaukee (1995-96), before returning to WBBM-AM in 1996. In 2007, LeMignot was honored by The Associated Press in the hard news feature category for her investigative report entitled "Tracking Your Security." Her investigation uncovered that bomb-sniffing dogs at Chicago's Metra train stations could not detect the passing scent of explosives. The report also earned LeMignot a Peter Lisagor Award in the in-depth reporting or series category and a Herman Kogan Award from the Chicago Bar Association. Le Mignot has won several other industry awards: a local and national Emmy for her breaking news reports on the Blue Line derailment (2008); a local and national Emmy Award for her breaking news reports about the death of Pope John Paul II (2005); the Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Award (1997); two Peter Lisagor Awards (1994 and 1996) and the National Association of Black Journalists Leadership Award, while a student (1993). Le Mignot has served on the Board of Directors of the Better Boys Foundation. The organization provides educational assistance to boys and girls in the North Lawndale community on Chicago's west side. The bill would make fingerprinting and DNA testing mandatory in John and Jane Doe cases in Illinois. In 2021 she received The Shantieya Smith "We Fight for Her Award" by MOVE and YOVE (Mothers Opposed to Violence Everywhere and Youth Opposed to Violence Everywhere) for her reports bringing attention to missing and murdered black girls and women in Chicago. The Oscars countdown continues! On the thirteenth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by brothers, filmmaker Freddy Burgos and artist Bernardo Goya to talk about Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic crime drama film based on a true story depicted in the book by David Grann, about the betrayal of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The film follows Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he returns from war to live with his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert DeNiro). Hale sets Ernest up to be a driver which leads him to meeting Molly Kyle (Lily Gladstone). Ernest and Molly fall in love but Ernest is “under Hale's spell” as they, with help from a few others, plot to kill her family in order to take their wealth. It's a heartbreaking, brutal story focused on this plot while also giving a voice to a story that has been hidden in history for decades. Killers of the Flower Moon marks the first time Scorsese directed his two muses, DeNiro and DiCaprio, in a film. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow. Just last week, Killers of the Flower Moon earned ten Oscar nominations, including the award for “Best Picture”. We are a little over a month away to learning if the film will take home a few Oscars! This episode is both Freddy and Bernardo's ATFT debut! We met on the set of our friend Craig Pedroza's upcoming film We Dream of Eden in 2022. They truly saved this episode. My original guest became unavailable so I was scrambling to find a guest. I asked Bernardo if he'd be interested and he was (!!) so he brought along his brother and the three of us had a great conversation! I learned early on this was a perfect film for us to discuss since they are big Martin Scorsese fans… and it shows in the episode! They have a joint YouTube channel called Fresh Lad Collective where they post, according to their bio, "cinematic shenanigans" which includes short films, vlogs, and compilations. Check out their channel by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/@freshladcollective/featured In this episode, Freddy, Bernardo, and I attempt to understand the complicated grey areas of the film such as the highly debated question, “Does Ernest really love Molly?”. Bernardo gave this film high praise, regarding it as Scorsese's “magnum opus”. Since Freddy and Bernardo are big fans of Scorsese, a lot of the episode focuses on him as they compare this film to previous films in Scorsese's filmography such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Departed. I spoke about the Scorsese film from the New Hollywood era that made me gain an even stronger respect for him. We also talked about the mafia- like parallel/ similarities, the dynamic between Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro, Lily Gladstone's powerful and moving performance, and much more! CalmRadio.UpliftingPills.com Instagram.com/UpliftingPills This mix is dedicated to Mike Graff, a Minneapolis-based composer, producer, and sound designer creating exquisite ambient-cinematic music as Dear Gravity. His work has graced almost all editorial ambient playlists you will come across, and has been featured worldwide in a variety of films and projects. Mike's motivation for creating this beautiful music is one that I deeply resonate with when creating Calm Pill mixes. “Our world isn't slowing down,” Graff says, “And when I try to keep up with it all, I begin to disconnect from my soul—from the ability to feel, notice and live. Creating as Dear Gravity helps me rediscover that color and mystery in life, and my goal is allow listeners to experience the same.” The 5 tracks I've included in this mix are only sample of his incredible body of work and collaborations with other amazing ambient artists. Check out more of Dear Gravity wherever you get your music or through the link below: https://solo.to/deargravity Making this mix was a labor of love. Intertwined: The Enslaved Community at George Washington’s Mount Vernon
Intertwined is a story about the entangled lives of Mount Vernon's enslaved community, the Washington Family, and the legacies of slavery at the historic plantation today. The stories we tell in the series are stories of a shared past that continues to shape us all. Music was an essential part of life in eighteenth-century America. It remains so our in own time. Music helps us to experience collectively life's great joys and its darkest moments in a way that generations past would still recognize. The soundtrack for Intertwined captures the spirit of each individual episode and the journey we take together over the course of the series. We've assembled a collection of artists whose modern work and vocal performances draw us into the past from the perspective of our present. We invite you to listen here. OK, If you've been following these podcasts, you know that I like to break up the interviews by narrating the chapters of my latest book, and Oneness guide, ‘The WAYZ of Oneness' Helping to Navigate Life that is available in a Kindle version on Amazon. So, I started with podcast episode #29, where I read, the ‘Forward', the ‘Introduction' and Chapter 1 called ‘Crisis', and I continued with podcast episode #32 which was Chapter 2 ‘Hatred'. This leads me to right here and now and podcast episode #35. Today, I will be reading, Chapter 3, officially titled:‘Death' “Fork in road ahead. Choose wisely!” (Navigating through Death and Transitioning)Here is an excerpt:"So, I started to wonder at an early age if there were WAYZ for us all to experience what our ‘transition' would be like? Maybe if there were some way to experience the transition, without actually taking our last breath of course! So, here's what I wondered. We know that we are spirit and that our transition will take us directly back to that state of being. So, is there anything we do while in this physical time-space reality that kind of resembles returning to a spiritual state? Hmm….Come on, let me hear you say it. YES! WE GO TO SLEEP EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!!Even the most non-spiritual and non-Oneness-believers out there will attest to a portion of each day where we allow our bodies to fall into a dream-like (aka spiritual) state! Well, what exactly happens during that time? WE DREAM! And what does that represent? What is that telling us? It gives us an actual 'experience' or a glimpse of the spirits that we are! We get the chance to revisit our spiritual side every night! In our dreams, we get the chance to experience what it is like to be in our spirit form. We get to visit and speak with loved ones. Sometimes we even get to fly or to execute tasks that are impossible in the physical world. " So, sit back. Pour yourself the beverage of your choice, and let me read to you!You can find 'That Oneness Guy' Podcast on any and all podcasting sites, apps, and smart-home devices! https://www.thatonenessguy.com/http://dannyrongo.com/https://www.iamgodbook.com/
Erin Entrada Kelly and I chat about her writing habits and how she learned to focus on what her creative spirit wants her to do. We discuss how she won a Newberry Award and immediately quit her day job, as well as her newest middle grade novel, MAYBE, MAYBE MARISOL RAINEY. We talk about how she always remembers an affinity for the characters and the story and the experience of writing it, but not necessarily the craft involved. Also discussed: the HELLO, UNIVERSE Netflix adaptation, dialogue with inanimate objects, breaking out of your writing bubble, characters achieving their goals before their author, the usefulness of third-person perspective, getting control of negative thoughts, a ghost alarm, and so much more. Erin Entrada Kelly received the 2018 Newbery Medal for Hello, Universe, a 2021 Newbery Honor for We Dream of Space, the 2017 APALA Award for The Land of Forgotten Girls, and the 2016 Golden Kite Honor Award for Blackbird Fly, among other honors. She is also the author and illustrator of the Maybe Maybe Marisol Rainey series. She is a New York Times bestseller whose work has been translated into several languages. Her fifth book, Lalani of the Distant Sea, was a finalist for the 2020 Mythopoeic Award for Children's Fantasy. Lalani received six starred reviews and was named one of the best books of the year by the New York Public Library, The Horn Book, Booklist, BookPage, and others. All Erin's books are Junior Library Guild Selections. In 2018, Hello, Universe and You Go First were both acquired for adaptation. Hello, Universe is being adapted by Netflix, and You Go First is being adapted for the stage. Erin has a bachelor's degree in women's studies and liberal arts from McNeese State University and an MFA from Rosemont College. She lives in Delaware. She teaches in the MFA programs at Hamline University and Rosemont College. She also teaches fiction with Gotham Writers Workshop. Erin is Filipina-American.

On October 17 2019, Lebanese people from all sects and all regions took to the streets to protest against decades of poor governance. But what has happened since then? This episode looks back on the last 14 months to see what has changed and what has not in Lebanon since the revolution. Tread Perilously once again opens the case files of the Special Review Unit for a recent episode of Law & Order: SVU called "We Dream of Machine Elves." When a tourist wakes up in Central Park wearing only a sheet and screaming about the "Machine Elves," Manhattan SVU detectives focus their investigation on a radical New York therapist who encourages the heavy use of drugs like DMT and re-experiencing trauma. He also happens to be a former professor of Detective Amanda Rollins. Will their past allow her the chance to learn the truth about his unusual methods? Or will Rollins once again fall for an older man of seeming authority? Captain Charlie Wright returns to remind Justin that he's met Detective Rollins. She also decries the episode's lack of momentum. Justin finds the cast changes surprising while Erik marvels at a decade of Meloni-less SVU. Carisi gets dubbed "good hair guy." ADA Barba continues to be missed. Charlie offers a number of great New York safety tips. Erik tries to understand vaping. Both he and Justin get lost remembering Season 2 of The Wire. Officer Katriona Tamin gets her first performance review and Tread Perilously chooses its favorite brands of oat milk.
Take a trip with hosts Yael Tygiel (@yaeltygiel) and Taylor Gates (@Elphaba_Anne) as they discuss machine elves! Talk 100 doses of DMT, undercover grad student hair, Swedish exchange students, and MORE. Season 21 episode 8, "We Dream of Machine Elves." ABOUT LAW AND ORDER SVU: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (often abbreviated to Law & Order: SVU or just SVU) is an American police procedural, legal, crime drama television series set in New York City, where it is also primarily produced. In the style of the original Law & Order, episodes are often "ripped from the headlines" or loosely based on real crimes that have received media attention. Created and produced by Dick Wolf, the series premiered on NBC on September 20, 1999, as the first spin-off of Wolf's successful crime drama, Law & Order. The show started its 17th season on September 23, 2015, and has aired 385 original episodes as of March 30, 2016. It is the current longest running scripted non-animated U.S. primetime TV series since the cancellation of the original Law & Order in 2010 and is the fifth-longest running scripted U.S. primetime TV series on a major broadcast network. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit originally centered almost exclusively on the detectives of the Special Victims Unit in a fictional version of the 16th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. As the series progressed, additional supporting characters were added as allies of the detectives in the New York County Manhattan District Attorney's office (known as advisers from the Sex Crimes Bureau) and the Medical Examiner's office. Typical episodes follow the detectives and their colleagues as they investigate and prosecute sexually based offenses. The show starred Christopher Melonias Detective Elliot Stabler and Mariska Hargitay as Detective Olivia Benson for its first twelve seasons until the former left the cast, unable to come to an agreement on his contract. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been nominated for and won numerous awards, including the 2006 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Mariska Hargitay, the first Emmy to be received by a regular on any Law & Order series. On February 1, 2016, the series was renewed for an eighteenth season. As of this date, it is the sole remaining series of the Law & Order franchise still in production (and has been since 2011), and the second-longest running after the original series, which was canceled by NBC at the end of its 20th season. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

My guest for Shalom Sistas #60 is Marla Taviano. Marla Taviano is the author of From Blushing Bride to Wedded Wife (2006), Is That All He Thinks About? (2007), Changing Your World One Diaper at a Time (2008), Expecting (2009), The Husband’s Guide to Getting Lucky (2011), Once Upon the Internet (2012), The Wife Life(2013), We Dream of Cambodia (2014), An Unschooling Manifesto (2014), The Storm (2015), and Shipwrecked (2017). Her biggest passions are loving the poor, seeking justice, and building libraries. Which we talk about on the show today. Marla and I dive right in and start talking about her family’s decision to move Cambodia, how she’s trying to be intentional in not calling herself a “missionary”, but a “neighbor”, why she started an Instagram account called, “White Girl Learning” , where we shares the books she’s reading written by authors of color. In the second half of the show Marla flips the tables and asks me some of her burning questions like my decision to start using the female pronoun for God (I talk about the theology of it with my friends Tim and Mariann Reardon in episode 59 of the podcast.) It was such a lovely conversation and I wish I could have talked to Marla for another hour. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. For links in today's episode, click here

We stand, we sit, We think, We Dream. All of it & none of it The same as once We were before. Forgotten? Nearly so: Remembered (by a torrent of malignancy gone wrong), We shudder in our should’ring ways (an effort fit for Dreams), A close encounter with the Innocence We once knew all too well.. I guess this must be the chase scene here: The sirenes, the clapping hands, the sound of quiet Freedom as it runs its way through yonder bush & its lengthy fingers through our hair... All of these befit a tragic loss Of some Intelligence gone wrong. What efforts there? What Solace in the mud? Has all the world now gone to pot & fled? Am I solely left within its grip, A wanderer made of quietude? Or am I slipping, even now toward something Less incredible than Real? CHAPTER 8: RAISED POOR I have never really liked the idea of sharing with others how much money I have or how I am spending it. By American standards, I was raised poor – or more aptly put, financially deficient (as there are many in this world who are truly poor by way of such deprivations). I have long- since learned that, regardless of my family’s financial deficits while growing up, I was always quite far from ever being truly poor. I began working as soon as I was able: babysitting, landscaping, whatever someone would pay me to do. New items, such as clothes or toys or anything of that nature (yes, I grouped clothes and toys together) came on Christmas Eve (only one present each), Christmas Day, birthdays, and just before school began each year (my grandmother would purchase for us each a new outfit consisting of blue jeans and a cool new shirt, shoes, socks, and a belt sometimes, if we were lucky or in need). My mother would stockpile all her rummage sale knick-knacks that she found for us throughout the year. She would hide them in the nooks and crannies of our home and often we would search for them or simply stumble upon them while at play. Of course, we would have to feign surprise when they were unwrapped later, through our mother seemed to always know the difference between a ruse and a legitimate reaction. We never had much by way of possession growing up, but we always had Happiness at the core of our relationships, so we were fine. I saw this Happiness again within the Philippines, despite the wretched claws of poverty. There, one may find a nation of inequality, quite ravaged by disparity. I could go on for a lifetime speaking of the People in that country, and – although I will abstain for now – I will have it known that the suffering in what is commonly referred to as the Third World (though more aptly put, the Global South) – whether we want to acknowledge it or not – is ever-present and should not ever be ignored.
