In Episode 137 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome John Berggren, Executive Director for Operations at the National Federation of the Blind. With just weeks to go before the 2025 national convention in New Orleans, John offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to coordinate the Federation's biggest annual event. From humble beginnings in 1999 building NFB-NEWSLINE® boxes to now orchestrating logistics for thousands of attendees, John shares how the convention has grown in scale, complexity, and impact. He talks about the thoughtful planning that starts years in advance—securing venues, negotiating hotel rates, and adapting to evolving technology like AI and indoor navigation tools. John also discusses what makes New Orleans a strong host city, previews some exciting programming, and reflects on past conventions, including setting a world record in 2015. This episode is more than a logistical rundown—it's a tribute to community, adaptability, and leadership. Whether you're attending in person or virtually, John's calm yet commanding presence underscores how much heart goes into making every convention unforgettable. If you're on the fence about going, this conversation might be the nudge you need. Vision and Justice: The Story of Judge David Tatel

White Canes Connect

In Episode 136 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome retired Judge David Tatel, author of Vision: A Memoir of Blindness and Justice. Judge Tatel reflects on his remarkable legal career—most notably, three decades on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit—while offering an unflinching look at his personal struggle with blindness caused by retinitis pigmentosa. Tatel shares how he spent most of his life downplaying or hiding his vision loss, even removing mentions from public records and press materials. It wasn't until his eighties, and through the process of writing Vision, that he fully embraced blindness as part of his identity. The conversation dives into his legal philosophy, his path from science to civil rights law, and the tools—both human and technological—that helped him succeed as a judge who is blind. The memoir is more than a professional journey; it's also a deeply personal story of resilience, love, and self-acceptance. Listeners will hear about Tatel's guide dog Vixen, his enduring partnership with his wife Edie, and his evolving fight for justice. It's a compelling episode about truth, advocacy, and the power of living fully seen. Show notes at https://www.whitecanesconnect.com/136        Links Mentioned Get the book! In Episode 135 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Martha Steele and Natanya Sortland to spotlight the inaugural Blind Birders Birdathon happening May 18, 2025. This nationwide event invites blind and visually impaired individuals to identify birds by sound during a flexible two-hour window within a 24-hour period. No birding experience required—just a love of listening. Martha, a lifelong birder from Massachusetts, was inspired by an article about a blind bird guide and helped launch the event to build community and highlight that birding is, above all, an auditory experience. Natanya, an ambassador for VisionCorps and a self-described "bird-loving beginner," is leading a group walk in Malvern, PA at Brightside Farm, with expert Rick Kaiser guiding participants through the art of bird song recognition. Supported by Birdability and fueled by grassroots passion, the Birdathon already has 160+ registered participants. Everyone who registers is eligible for a prize drawing that includes birding gear, books, and even a guided birding tour. The event is open to anyone blind or low vision—and yes, even sighted allies are welcome to join the fun. Register at https://www.birdability.org/blind-birder-birdathon and be part of this first-of-its-kind movement. In Episode 131 of White Canes Connect, host David Goldstein shares highlights from a powerful panel on digital accessibility and the expanded scope of ADA Title II, which now includes websites, mobile apps, and digital documents of publicly funded institutions. Moderated by Thomas DiAgostino and facilitated by JEME Agency and Accessible Pharmacy Services for the Blind, the panel features four experts from diverse backgrounds: Jamie Ray-Leonetti (Institute on Disabilities at Temple University), Adrienne Moore (Office for People with Disabilities, Philadelphia), architect Ricardo J. Rodríguez De Santiago, and Goldstein himself. The discussion centers on the DOJ's 2024 Title II update, requiring compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Panelists explore implementation challenges, legal obligations, and the critical role of inclusive design. Moore outlines Philadelphia's proactive strategies, while Rodríguez emphasizes human-centered design and breaking common accessibility misconceptions. Goldstein draws from lived experience, highlighting real-world digital barriers and the need to involve disabled users directly. Ray-Leonetti underscores the urgency of embedding accessibility into policy and organizational culture—not just for compliance, but as a moral imperative. This episode is both a rallying cry and a practical guide for anyone building digital spaces. Accessibility isn't extra—it's essential. In Episode 126 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, Director of Government Affairs at the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) and a proud member of the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland. Dylan shares his experiences as a policy advocate, including his recent congressional testimony on waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending. While his testimony was substantive and well-researched, Dylan faced an unfortunate wave of online backlash—not for his arguments, but for his blindness. Instead of engaging with his policy points, critics weaponized harmful stereotypes, dismissing his expertise solely because he is blind. NFB leadership, including President Riccobono, strongly condemned this type of discrimination and called for more respectful political discourse. Despite the attacks, Dylan remains focused on his advocacy work. He discusses the importance of persistence, staying informed, and engaging in grassroots activism. Listeners are encouraged to start small—advocating in their communities, contacting legislators, and standing firm against discrimination. Steve Palmer welcomes David Goldstein to tackle a complex and timely issue: the legal responsibility of AI in the tragic case of a 14-year-old boy's suicide. This episode dives into the evolving legal landscape surrounding AI technology and the challenges it poses for traditional negligence claims. With AI becoming an integral part of our daily lives, the question of liability in cases like these is more relevant than ever. The discussion begins with an introduction to Dave Goldstein, a seasoned civil litigation attorney, who shares his journey from criminal prosecution to civil law. His insights into the importance of trial experience for aspiring litigators set the stage for a deeper exploration of the episode's main topic. Goldstein emphasizes the value of hands-on experience in the courtroom, a sentiment echoed by Palmer, who stresses the need for personal responsibility in the legal profession and beyond. As the conversation shifts to the AI-related lawsuit, Palmer and Goldstein examine the nuances of the case. They discuss the difficulties in establishing negligence when an AI chatbot is involved, especially when the bot's responses seem to discourage harmful actions. They explore the potential for legislative action to address these challenges, highlighting the role of common law in adapting to new technological realities. Throughout the episode, the theme of personal responsibility remains central. Palmer and Goldstein argue that while AI companies may bear some responsibility, parents and individuals must also take proactive steps to ensure the well-being of their loved ones. This conversation serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between technological advancement and societal responsibility. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on the broader implications of AI in our lives and the legal system's role in addressing these complex issues. In episode 115 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein are joined by bioengineers Chiadika Eleh and Joey Wei, who share the journey of creating See-Rynge, a groundbreaking liquid measuring device designed specifically for the blind and low-vision community. Originally developed as a senior design project at the University of Pennsylvania, See-Rynge was inspired by the need for blind parents to independently administer liquid medications accurately, a need brought to light during a meeting with Lynn Heitz, President of the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania. Chiadika and Joey describe how See-Rynge works: utilizing audio and tactile feedback, the device ensures precise liquid measurement without the need for sight. It's paired with a companion app that tracks usage and provides dosage reminders, potentially aiding users beyond the blind community, including those with limited motor skills. Despite balancing full-time jobs, Chiadika and Joey remain committed to perfecting SeaRange, sharing their hope to make it widely accessible and affordable. Using my phone's assistive tech, I navigated the exhibits, but not without a few challenges.  I also talk about my thoughts on working in an open office—spoiler alert, it's not ideal for someone who relies on listening rather than seeing. And, of course, no trip to New York would be complete without a stop at Junior's for some cheesecake with Jane. Listen for all the details, a few laughs, and some insights into accessible tech. They delve into their groundbreaking research on tactile aids aimed at enhancing accessibility for the visually impaired. The project, initiated through Kat's network connection and supported by a grant from the National Institute of Health, seeks to innovate beyond traditional raised bumps and lines used in Braille. Abigail and Kayla explain their focus on the material properties that affect touch perception, like surface roughness and chemistry, to create more advanced tactile stimuli. This could potentially revolutionize the accessibility of spatial information such as graphs, maps, and diagnostic tests. Kat's role as a consultant involves recruiting participants for the research and ensuring that their work remains user-focused. She also helps make the project's communication accessible, including braille labeling and proofreading. The research has shown promising results, with tests indicating that certain chemical coatings can be distinguished by touch, paving the way for new tactile aids. In Episode 101 of "White Canes Connect," hosts David Goldstein and Lisa Bryant engage with Rabbi Lenny Sarko to discuss his pioneering work on the Braille Torah. Rabbi Sarko, who is visually impaired himself due to complications from diabetes, shares his unique journey of adapting the Torah into Braille to facilitate inclusive religious participation for the blind and visually impaired within the Jewish community. The episode delves into Rabbi Sarko's motivation, which stemmed from his fear of losing complete sight and realizing that no Hebrew Braille Torahs existed globally. This led him to innovate and create the first Braille Sefer Torah, overcoming significant technical challenges such as ensuring the durability of Braille on parchment and complying with the Torah's stringent production standards. Rabbi Sarko's work is not only a technical achievement but also a profound contribution to inclusivity. It allows blind individuals to receive an "aliyah" and participate fully in services. His initiative extends beyond the creation of the Torah, as he also provides resources and training in Hebrew Braille and has authored accessible religious texts. The discussion highlights the broader implications of Rabbi Sarko's work for community inclusion and preserving religious practices. In this episode of White Canes Connect, hosts  Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein explore the Diabetes Prevention Program with special guests Joani Schmeling from the Health Promotion Council and NFB of PA President Lynn Heights, a diabetes coach. The program, developed by the CDC, is designed to support individuals with prediabetes through lifestyle changes over a year, emphasizing the importance of diet, exercise, and stress management.  Lisa shares her commitment to participating in the program, highlighting its potential to prevent the progression from prediabetes to diabetes, a leading cause of blindness. The episode also addresses the flexibility and accessibility of the program, including virtual options and support for a wide range of participants.  Success stories from the program illustrate its effectiveness in improving health outcomes, such as significant A1C reductions. The discussion emphasizes that while the commitment may seem daunting, the potential health benefits far outweigh the perceived challenges, encouraging listeners to consider joining the program to take control of their health.
