Dan and Ellen talk with April Alonso, co-founder and digital editor of Cicero Independiente outside of Chicago. Cicero Independiente and MuckRock won the 2024 Victor McElheny Award for Local Science Journalism, awarded by MIT's Knight Science Journalism Program, for an investigation of air quality called "The Air We Breathe."  April has an extensive background as a multimedia content creator. She was a multimedia fellow for the Chicago Reporter, and served as a multimedia content creator for La Verdad, a bilingual podcast.  Dan has a Quick Take about a town north of Vancouver, in British Columbia, that has learned a bitter lesson about Canada's law forcing Facebook's parent company, Meta, to pay for news. The law has led to a rise in disinformation with fewer effective ways to combat it. Meta's greed is at the heart of this, of course. But so, too, is the failure of government officials to realize that their proposed solution to help local news outlets would backfire in an ugly way. Ellen's Quick Take is on a new philanthropic fund created by the Minnesota Star Tribune. It's called the Local News Fund, and it is soliciting donations supporting statewide journalism that will be matched by a $500,000 grant from a Minnesota foundation.

Today on the show host Steve Ordower welcomes his friend and colleague, journlist Stephan Garnett - who is wrapping up a long and distinguished carreer teaching at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.  They discussed a myriad of issues, including the state of journalism today and the incentive structures that are influential in creating the current media landscape in the U.S.  The conversation touched on how destructive the current media landscape is to fostering productive conversation, and those that put a good-faith effort forward to cultivate nuanced conversation are often-times vilified.  They also touched on how certain words have become triggers in the public arena, such as "woke" or "PC," as well as the comedic brilliance of Dave Chappelle and the use of the N-word.  And, Garnett discussed some of the remarkable projects he has worked on, as well as the journalists that have come through his classroom - which includes the late James Foley who was captured in 2012 and killed in 2014  while covering the Syrian civil war.Stephan Garnett has a 30-year career as a journalist. In addition to working as a suburban and community reporter, he has been an investigative reporter for The Chicago Reporter, and an urban and police reporter for the City News Bureau of Chicago. He spent 14 years as a magazine feature writer and editor, first for ShopTalk, a trade publication, then as a contributing writer to Dollars & Sense and Blackbook magazines. More recently, Garnett has worked in radio, film and television. He has researched and consulted for documentaries produced by the BBC and CNN and has been an essayist for "Chicago Matters," an acclaimed local Public Radio community series. In 2005, Garnett executive produced and wrote and narrated the script for a 15-minute multi-media documentary on the last building left standing at Robert Taylor Homes, once the largest public housing project in the nation. Garnett teaches Journalism Methods for graduates and Media Convergence for undergraduates. He also edits for the Medill News Service and has served as an adviser for Medill's Global Journalism program.INSIDE ROBERT TAYLOR project:https://youtu.be/bprhTUZIOCg#rhythmoflife   #podcast #podcasts #podcastshow #podcasting #media #press #thepress #journalism  #president #steveordower #bobhercules #media #medianews #news #press #incentives #davechappelle

“Sometimes you've got to choose to be happy.” When Jackie Kostek realized she wasn't going to get her dream job anchoring and reporting in Chicago, she decided to believe in herself and move to Las Vegas where she could do both full-time. Her leap of faith paid off; after less than three years on the air there, she's back in the Windy City, feeling stronger than ever about her choices and what's ahead. She shares with Jeanne how she knew it was time to go, the two methods she uses to help find herself and what she really wants, how coping with hair loss gave her power, what being in alignment means for her, and why she feels it's such a privilege to tell other people's stories while working on her own. About Jackie: Jackie Kostek is an anchor and reporter at CBS Chicago, covering news and sports. She was formerly the weekend anchor and reporter at KTNV in Las Vegas and a multimedia journalist at WCIU in Chicago. She was also the in-arena and digital host for the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Fire. She has produced episodes of PBS' national travel show, Family Travel with Colleen Kelly and served as the Director of Photography for an independent documentary about online harassment. She has contributed to AJ Plus, Bill Moyers, Monocle and MSNBC. She is an alum of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Teach For America, and the University of Kansas.

Join Helen Shiller and Laura Washington as they discuss Shiller's new biography, Daring to Struggle Daring to Win. Helen Shiller went from radical anti-war activist in Wisconsin, to a member of a collective of white allies of the Black Panther Party in Chicago, to an elected city council person who helped break the back of the racialized opposition to Harold Washington, Chicago's first Black mayor. Shiller participated, when few others did, in the historic fight against the gentrification of a unique economically and racially mixed Chicago community on the Northside. With insight into historic community organizing and political battles in Chicago from the 1970s through 2010, this book details numerous policy fights and conflicts in Chicago during this time, illuminating recurrent political themes and battles that remain relevant to this day. Join us for a limited-capacity in-person book launch event and discussion with Helen Shiller and Laura Washington about the struggle for justice then and now in Chicago. Masks and proof of vaccination are required for those attending in person. For those attending in-person doors will open at 6 PM. Usually whenever a person receives an envelope address to themselves as both the Sender and reviewer is because you want to copyright the contents of the envelope by regular mail to claim ownership. Welcome to season 2, episode 26 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Hugo Balta, an experienced award-winning, broadcast & digital media news executive directing growth and innovation in several divisions and businesses in the U.S. and Latin America.Hugo's nearly 30-years of experience include leadership roles with storied news networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, and Telemundo.Hugo is the owner/publisher of the Latino News Network (LNN) – the only English language news and information outlet focused on serving Hispanics-Latinos in New England. LNN also amplifies the work of others in elevating the visibility and voices of a community often absent in newsrooms and news coverage.Hugo is also a writer and associate editor for The Chicago Reporter producing stories focused on covering race, ethnicity, and culture in the third largest market in the U.S.In addition to being an accomplished journalist, Hugo is the only president to serve two terms in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' (NAHJ) history. In 2016, he was inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame, and as part of his acceptance founded the Hortencia Zavala Scholarship – a not-for-profit to help students with the high cost of education. Hugo was born in Patterson, NJ and is the proud son of Peruvian immigrants. He shares that growing up he felt like a child of two worlds, as he had the responsibility at a young age of bridging the language barrier between his parents and the outside world. There were many times in his career that Hugo could have chosen to blend in, have a big title, and hefty paycheck, but that would have caused him to have to stray from his beliefs and convictions. When those situations would arise, he would think about what his mom had to go through working in a sweatshop or that he never saw his dad much as he worked 2-3 jobs 7 days a week. His parents worked hard to be able to provide Hugo with the incredible opportunities that he has been able to leverage. From messaging around never giving up or compromising your beliefs to don't listen to all the noise, Hugo has so much insight to offer. Next week my guest is Charlene Gorzela, Podcast Host, Grief Recovery Now and Grief Recovery Method Specialist.  After 26 years as the CEO of a successful Professional Staffing Services firm in the city of Chicago, she knew that the next chapter would be another important one for her.  She has always had the passion in the human potential movement and knew that this next chapter in her life would be something unprecedented and extraordinary.   What happened was something that even in her wildest dreams, she would not even have guessed that she would be doing.  Please take a moment to write a review when streaming. Chicago Reporter Rafer Weigel Explains The Jussie Smollett Case, and the Sorry State Of Journalism In America

Jussie Smollett, the actor and singer, will be facing charges for filing a false police report. The Empire star claimed he was attacked by two men in Chicago screaming about "MAGA country" who placed a noose around his neck. The story fell apart when the two men who were suspected of the attack explained how they were paid by Smollett to stage the attack. But media across America did not wait for the facts: they declared Smollett was telling the truth and wasted no time attacking Trump supporters. Celebrities and presidential candidates like Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) joined in, going so far as to call it a "lynching." Chicago reporters had taken their time with the story, doing the hard work of journalism, and covered the events properly. Tony Katz (http://twitter.com/tonykatz) speaks with Chicago FOX 32 reporter and anchor Rafer Weigel (http://twitter.com/raferweigel) about the Smollett case, and the state of journalism in America.

Ken Davis is joined by Northwestern University School of Law’s Sheila Bedi, The Chicago Reporter’s Jonah Newman and Black Lives Matters Chicago’s Jonathan Projanski. They discuss the City’s recent release of a draft consent decree covering police reform in Chicago. They talk about the fact that community organizations won the right to participate in the drafting of the proposed decree, and their concern that many of the recommendations their groups proposed did not make it into the final draft. They also discuss the role of the Chicago police union in opposing many of the group’s proposals and speculate that, even if the ultimate federally-monitored decree is accepted by the judge and assigned to a monitor, the process of reforming the CPD will take many years, perhaps decades. This program was produced by Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV).

Chicago is experiencing a reversal of the great migration that propelled African Americans northward in search of opportunity in the first half of the 20th century. Since 2000, a quarter-million black Chicagoans have left. The reasons include decades of bad policy and broken promises on affordable housing, education and public safety. On this episode of Reveal, we team up with the Data Reporting Lab in Chicago to examine how trauma care teams have done more than law enforcement to reduce the gun homicide rate and with The Chicago Reporter to describe how activists are pushing back against the shutdown of 50 public schools at once. — Head over to revealnews.org for more of our reporting. It shows only 6 of the 99 in the implemented category. Between 2012 and 2015 alone, the City of Chicago paid $210 million to settle 655 police misconduct cases.  A disproportionate number of these cases were in African American and Latino neighborhoods, many of which are undergoing significant change.  These cases were typically settled by the City, with no admission of guilt on the part of the officers involved.   Not only did these cases further weaken already strained relationships between the Police and the impacted communities, they diverted resources that could have been otherwise used for city services or neighborhood revitalization.  The Chicago Reporter created an interactive database to analyze the cases at length, and to provide policy makers, activists and journalists with the information they need to make inferences and informed recommendations. Join Susan Smith Richardson, the Editor and Publisher of the Chicago Reporter,  and me in an informative discussion about their initial findings regarding police misconduct cases; an overview of the database, and ways website visitors may use the data to engage their constituencies to begin the process of identifying critical issues and solutions and increasing police accountability.
