Percy has recently started the record label Necessary Angel, which he sees as an archival entity whose sole mission is to spread as much sonic beauty across the world as possible.Influenced by the Laurel Canyon Sound, Bowie, Steely Dan, Richie Havens, and Scott Walker, but created in the context of my own experience, Percy's new album “The Stars and The Well” is unabashedly nostalgic, consumed with Romance and unafraid of the fragility of love. This Heat, Camberwell Now, etc.)

During the nearly 50 years of his career, English drummer/singer/composer Charles Hayward has developed idiosyncratic attitudes and insights into music and sound. Charles was a founding member of the experimental rock groups This Heat and Camberwell Now. He also played with the European improv group Mal Dean's Amazing Band and gigged and recorded with Phil Manzanera in Quiet Sun. Charles also did a short stint with Gong. Since the late 80's Charles has concentrated on solo projects and collaborations, including Massacre with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith, Monkey Puzzle Trio and Albert Newton.
English drummer Charles Hayward is best known for This Heat, a band that defies categories, but has also worked through the NHS with Ambient Jam. We go in deep with art, music, history, philosophy & theory. There's also a hilarious bit about turning a 180 with Van Morrison (a clear example of the power of sound). Dziś chciałbym omówić książkę Agathy Christie pt. “Dom zbrodni”. Przejdźmy jednak do książki “Dom zbrodni”. Ma on oczywiście osobisty powód aby znaleźć mordercę. Cała rodzina to bogaci biali amerykanie. W filmie z kolei to bogaci biali Amerykanie wypowiadają się z niechęcią o nielegalnych imigrantach, a młoda Brazylijka to wcielony anioł. U Christie został on wspomniany. Wszystko jednak zapomniałem i musiałem film obejrzeć jeszcze raz.W filmie detektywa gra Daniel Craig, a brazylijską opiekunkę Ana de Armas. Ci i inni aktorzy grają świetnie.

This Heat special with Charles Hayward in conversation with David Eastaugh This Heat were an English experimental rock band, formed in early 1976 in Camberwell, London by multi-instrumentalists Charles Bullen (guitar, clarinet, viola, vocals, tapes), Charles Hayward (drums, keyboards, vocals, tapes) and Gareth Williams (keyboard, guitar, bass, vocals, tapes). This Heat were active in the ascendancy of British punk rock and post-punk, but stood apart from those scenes due to an experimental, confrontational, and politically charged approach. This Heat's commercial success was limited, and their discography consisted of only two albums and an EP, but in later years the band have been widely considered a link between early 1970s music styles such as krautrock and later experimental genres such as industrial music and post-rock.

It's been a minute, so in this short episode, we update you on what's happening with Phantom Power and what's coming in 2020. The big (and sad) news is that co-host cris cheek is departing. After two years of lending his unique voice, ideas, and turns of phrase to the show--not to mention producing fantastic episodes like his interview with This Heat's Charles Hayward--cris has decided to refocus on his many other creative endeavors. We will miss cris, but the show will go on. And he's been kind enough to let us continue using his golden intro! Check out the pod to hear about some of our upcoming 2020 episodes, with guests including Colin Black, Harriet Ottenheimer, Jonathan Sterne, and Siavash Amini.

[music fades out] [MACK] So it’s great to be back. Phantom Power Season Two, and this episode is one that I have been waiting for with a certain fan-ish frenzy, because we’re going to talk about Charles Hayward; the drummer, keyboardist, vocalist, tape manipulator, pioneer of experimental rock and roll. [CRIS] Yeah, right. And still putting out albums. Still touring. This Heat, the band that you would just hearing, they’ve recently done a 40 year set of concerts under the name “This is not This Heat.” [MACK] It’s amazing to hear This Heat still making such an impact on music, because I remember playing music in Chicago in the late 90s and early 2000s and at that time post rock was a genre that was a pretty big deal. Those of us playing that sort of music were really inspired I would say by a few bands. There was Can. There was Lee Scratch Perry. There was This Heat. Talk Talk was another one. [CRIS] Interesting to hear that. I like them too, especially their later albums. [MACK] So, This Heat was just a group that once you heard them you’re like, I can’t believe this already existed so long ago. [CRIS] They they take a punk DIY aesthetic and then they retain some of the immediacy of the elements of that music. They were more involved with a very different kind of idea about the interrelationship between melody and rhythm and noise. Dirty sense and dirty samplers and expanded sense inside music making that leads into trance ambience, precise bursts of silence. I think all of that is part of what makes their music still sound fresh. [ethereal music fades in] [MACK] Charles Hayward went on to play with so many interesting bands, including Massacre with the guitarist Fred Frith and the bass player Bill Laswell. [CRIS] They just put out an album this year of improvisations with [inaudible] from Sonic Youth. [MACK] By the way, how do you know Charles Hayward? [CRIS] Loosely rubbing shoulders on and off over the years. When I was playing music around various different scenes in London. This sort of person who I felt was part of a community of music makers and interested audiences over...

On our recent trip to England, we found a cozy hallway in the back of London's Cafe Oto to sit down with living legends Charles Bullen & Charles Hayward of This Heat. Over the course of the conversation, LITA's Matt Sullivan talks with C & C about their music, legacy, the formation of This Is Not This Heat, as well as what's currently on their turntables. For folks in the USA, a miracle will soon be hitting our shores – C & C will be performing This Is Not This Heat. These shows will mark the first ever US performances for both C & C in any incarnation. Hallelujah! Tour dates below. Formed in Brixton, a multicultural, and – at the time – down-at-heel part of south London, This Heat were born into a music scene in rapid flux, first thanks to the punk explosion and then via new wave and its myriad offshoots into pop, rock and art-rock. But while many sought to apply punk attitude to chart-friendly sounds, This Heat were concocting some of the most experimental ideas ever committed to tape, taking influence from musique concrète, krautrock, the burgeoning industrial scene and even the dub reggae blasting out in their home borough.
