The fourth trimester and motherhood encompass such huge changes in a woman's life, yet we hardly spend any time planning for some of the challenges. Exercising in the postpartum has a whole heap of physical and psychological benefits but the realities of this with a new baby can be a challenge. Click the following link to subscribe to the New Leaf Nutshell, breaking down the most controversial of motherhood topics and doing all the Googling, so you don't have to. This month, I'm debunking Sleep Training and exploring its murky waters, as we discover the secret (or lack thereof)... of getting your tiny terror to sleep --> https://newleafpodcast.substack.com/p/the-new-leaf-nutshell-should-i-sleep?r=aze8z&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source=copy The sparkling, bubbly Charlie Barker joins me on Episode 5 of New Leaf to talk all things identity, body image, fertility, self- judgment and work life balance this week and wow she does not disappoint. I think this episode was in my top five of all time favourites to record, I actually didn't want the conversation to end. What was supposed to be just an hour morphed into nearly two, so this was a challenge to edit but for all the right reasons… Charlie is a great example of doing things her own way, and embodying the ‘my motherhood, my choice' mantra that I keep plugging away at in this series, continuing to work and grind away after having Alfie because she is quite literally so committed to the cause of what she does - it is truly her calling - and is riding on a wonderful wave of success. She is a picture perfect example of someone who is so utterly passionate about what they do that success greets them with open arms, of course after a tonne of graft and hard work. For someone like Charlie who has been embroiled in the maternity world for such a long time without being a mum, I found her journey from recurrent miscarriage all the way to her little rainbow baby fascinating and inspiring. Of course, Charlie had more of an introduction to the fertility and motherhood community than most women - six years worth from when she launched b&b in 2014 - yet she still grapples with the same challenges all mums do - how do I get time to myself? Gosh I'll be so much freer when I stop breastfeeding - why won't they take puree off a spoon - etc., It goes to show that there really is no book, as she says, because so much of early motherhood feels like poking around in the dark praying that you're doing the right thing. The secret is that you're always doing the right thing. I thought Charlie's commentary around birth experience was deeply refreshing. Charlie had an extremely positive birth experience, but because of her mode of delivery, people were quick to jump in with a label or an assumption that it was ‘traumatic'. It reminded me to not presume people have had a ‘good' or ‘bad' experience based on what we are made to believe is positive or negative, according to what society is pushing at the time. We have a fantastic ‘positive birth movement' wave at the moment, centred around empowering women in their own birth experiences. But for what it's worth, I interpreted this, and the course I did in this vein during my own pregnancy, that if I had intervention, it would be ‘bad', and would make it somehow a negative experience - and because of something I had done, or hadn't tried hard enough with, whatever that means. And I wonder how many other women feel this way - that they had a good experinece, even though other people were saying or implying that it should be 'bad'. So when I had my (pretty much) maximum intervention experience, I judged it, and it took me a while to accept that actually it had been very positive! Charlie is an excellent reminder to do things our own way, which feels particularly poignant in my second pregnancy. I am extremely intrigued to see where Charlie goes, because as you'll hear in the interview she is a force of nature. Absolutely watch this space because this girl is onto some very big things. Introducing, Charlie Barker.

First up, another honest update from me, Amy, on how I’m handling week 4 of Couch to 5K followed by our first ‘Ask an Expert tip with Charlie Barker of Bumps and Burpees. Episode 4 is all about the Four--Enneagram Four. Charlie Barker (my brother in law!) and I are both Fours and we do Big Feelings. Charlie goes deep about the dissonance he felt growing up in the church (Noah's Ark, anyone?!), recognizing the bleed over into dissonance in his relationships, and learning to embrace the chaos and beauty of his inner voice. We explore the ability to maintain relationships while distancing ourselves from the old stories that had once been at the center of those relationships. We chat about learning to listen to our bodies as a source of truth and knowing. And we laugh about becoming friends after years of being family.Funny, explorational, honest, and at times slightly awkward, this episode is for those who, as Charlie says, recognize that their brains are trying to believe something their bodies simply can't.As Charlie has come to embrace his Most True Self, he has self-published a book, continues to write and perform music, and has been able to embrace his life in its entirety. Charlie's website is www.tinystudio92.com His book, Wind Walker, can be found on Amazon. To learn more about the podcast, check the website, www.mosttrueyoupodcast.com. Today Zoe speaks to Charlie Barker, mother, entrepreneur and founder of bumps and burpees post-natal fitness company. Charlie talks to Zoe about starting and running her own business, writing and getting a book published in a year (whilst pregnant and in a pandemic!) and life after having a baby. They also talk in depth about Charlie's three tragic miscarriages before the birth of her beautiful child Archie. KEY TAKEAWAYS Charlie met her husband George at university and they have now been together for 12 years. Charlie trained to be a personal trainer but after a postnatal PT at her gym left she took on some of her clients and got many referrals. It was this that made her decide to do more training and become more specialised to be a pre and post-natal PT. She found that a lot of the time the ‘barriers' these women faced was very different to other clients, in the fact that getting childcare could often be a struggle. It was this that made her incorporate babies into her clients training. She would start going to their houses and help facilitate her clients training by helping look after the babies, including changing nappies! Once her diary became full she then began training and recruiting other PTs and this is how the business grew. She would almost ‘match-make' clients to PT's to give them the best experience. Charlie got pregnant the first month they started trying, they were over the moon. Sadly, she started having some bleeding very early on and started miscarrying. They fell pregnant again very quickly, and told their families. They went for a private scan and the sonographer wasn't sure they could see a heartbeat. She asked them to come back two weeks later. When she went back they had the tragic news that the baby hadn't carried on developing and it was a missed miscarriage. As a society, we need to talk more about the physical side of miscarriage. We have started to become better at talking about the emotional side but it would be so helpful for so many women if we talked about what physically happened when we go through a miscarriage. Only after Charlie felt better in herself did her Husband George feel like he could then grieve and be honest about how he was feeling about the miscarriage. Devastatingly, her third pregnancy ended in a miscarriage too, whilst she was speaking at a baby show of all places. As Charlie had now had three miscarriages she had hit the NHS threshold for investigation and tests. But, all her tests came back fine and she was told it was ‘bad luck' and to just keep trying. Charlie didn't accept this and arranged to see a specialist but whilst waiting to see him she got pregnant! He did some tests and found out that her immune system was almost ‘fighting' her pregnancies. She was put on steroids and some other drugs until she was 14 weeks pregnant and incredibly Charlie gave birth to Albie at 41 weeks! BEST MOMENTS “The stars aligned for you” “I was removing that baby from them, letting them train and be themselves and do what they love and doing everything I possibly could to keep that baby to keep them training” “It taught me some good multitasking tips” “Often the lows aren't spoken about” “I had a gut feeling that if I didn't take control this would keep happening” “It was the first time we saw a heartbeat…I was in love” “You have to live hour by hour and the baby is boss!” "As a new mum I only drink cold tea now!" Zoe was born in the UK and before moving to Dubai in 2013 and worked as a midwife in central London, both in a birth centre and a very busy NHS hospital. Although late to the scene, Zoe is an aspiring athlete having won numerous triathlons and representing Great Britain where she placed within the top 10 on the world stage. With her husband James, the couple will soon be launching their cloth nappy company, Bop & Bee, where they hope to inspire families to swap a few disposable nappies a day for the more planet friendly option of cloth. Zoe's goal is to share her knowledge and experience, tell real life stories, manage expectations and open up those often difficult conversations. Party Favorz is back with our next installment of Peak Hour mayhem! Turn Up the Volume features the latest in Tech House, Late Nite House, EDM, and Bootleg mashups that are bound to turn some heads. This set starts off with a simmer and heats up rapidly before boiling over. Lots of fresh originals here like Norman Doray and Piem's "Give It Up," Husko & Stephan Duy's "Hands In The Air," HUGEL's "Cool," and Prok & Fitch's "Indiance." [youtube v="324DDmUpU_o"] You may also remember back in February I declared Soffi Tukker's "Good Time Girl" as one of the biggest songs of the year that actually came out last year. Our good friends at Ultra apparently agree and commissioned some official remixes for the song and the Leandro da Silva remix is included here. You better believe the more commercial Benny Bennasi remix will be making its debut on the next Dance Club set. [youtube v="xE5Jwicp53I"] My only complaint is that they dropped the white girl rap by Charlie Barker, which added a lot of flavor to the original. Nevertheless, these are stellar remixes coming on top of ST's recent collab with Gorgon City on "House Arrest." We also have a lot of familiar classic songs that have either been updated ("Gypsy Woman" by Maurizio Basilotta, "Phenomenon" by Sweetpower, "Turnin Me Out" by Chapter & Verse, and "Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa). We even have a rock classic song by Santana "Oye Como Va" being given the House treatment which works oh so well. Block & Crown deliver "Good For Critics," which uses one of the countless loops and samples in their catalog that is so vast — it's hard to keep up with muchless remember where the samples came from — even though you know you've heard it before. Finally, Italy's DJs From Mars can always be counted on for mashing up two to three memorable dance classics with something current. Their concoctions are always guaranteed to raise the roof. Here we get the excellent "Not Exactly Boss Bitch in San Frandisco" featuring Doja Cat, Deadmau5 and, Dom Dolla — "All Around the Roses" by SAINt JHN & Imanbek, and R3hab & A Touch Of Class — "Sweet Start Now" by Dua Lipa, The Temper Trap, and Axwell & Dirty South. In all, Turn Up the Volume demands you do exactly that. Piss off your neighbors or have a late night balcony party. This set is designed for maximum pleasure. ENJOY! Turn Up the Volume features the latest in Tech House, Late Nite House, EDM, and Bootleg mashups that are bound to turn some heads. This set starts off with a simmer and heats up rapidly before boiling over. Lots of fresh originals here like Norman Doray and Piem's "Give It Up," Husko & Stephan Duy's "Hands In The Air," HUGEL's "Cool," and Prok & Fitch's "Indiance." You may also remember back in February I declared Soffi Tukker's "Good Time Girl" as one of the biggest songs of the year that actually came out last year. Our good friends at Ultra apparently agree and commissioned some official remixes for the song and the Leandro da Silva remix is included here. You better believe the more commercial Benny Bennasi remix will be making its debut on the next Dance Club set. My only complaint is that they dropped the white girl rap by Charlie Barker, which added a lot of flavor to the original. ENJOY!
