Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  Today we discuss Clint Eastwood, the director and the movie star. Our B-Sides are Breezy, White Hunter Black Heart, Blood Work, Flags of Our Fathers, and The Mule. Our guest is the impeccable Mitchell Beaupre, Managing Editor at Letterboxd.  We talk about Clint's Casper cameo and how that was probably the first thing all three of us saw him in a movie, John Wayne's disdain for Eastwood's on-screen persona, his uncanny direction of actors as well as his smart casting (ahem, The 15:17 to Paris notwithstanding) of actors. Often, if Clint is in one of his own movies, he will surround himself with talent as good (if not better) than himself. There's significant appreciation for his underseen Honkytonk Man, there's honest discussion of his ambitious performance in White Hunter Black Heart (playing a version of filmmaker John Huston), and we three reappraise his Flags of Our Fathers nearly twenty years after its underwhelming release. It's way better than you remember! Additional topics include Spielberg's protégés (from Phil Joanou to Kevin Reynolds to Brad Silberling), Breezy's beautiful rendering of the post-60s counterculture depression, and Blood Work's silly (and wonderful) twist ending.

Seeing as it's September, it's that time of year again…..time for the kids to go back to school!  And what better way to commemorate this time period than revisiting what MIGHT be one of the strangest high school comedies from the ‘80's?  It's the simple of story of Jerry Mitchell (Casey Siemaszko) a mild-mannered Senior student who gets challenged to an after-school brawl by the new intimidating kid in school, the much gossiped about Buddy Revell played menacingly by Richard Tyson.  And then we watch over the next six hours as Jerry attempts to exhaust all options to AVOID this fight….including trying to enlist help to take on Revell.  It's quirky, fresh, funny, and definitely underappreciated as this film was a flop when it first hit theaters – since then, it has reached somewhat of a cult status thanks to confident direction from Phil Joanou in what was his directorial debut.Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

“State Of Grace” is the film that should have ensured the whole world learned how to pronounce Phil Joanou's last name. Reilly & John Turturro How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: I like “State Of Grace” more than “Good Fellas”. I wouldn't even make the comparison if the two films hadn't been released the same weekend. Oh sure…”Good Fellas” is a “better movie” but I like the actors in this one more and if I'm even twenty percent correct in my perverse opinion, this is a film all lovers of 90's crime dramas should re-assess, if only to appreciate the greatness of Robin Wright's performance with all these tough guys. You and the Mikes, you're gonna have a fight. Today. After school. Three o'clock. In the parking lot. You try and run, they're gonna track you down. You go to a teacher, it's only gonna get worse. You sneak home, they're gonna be under your bed. That's right! The Mikes are fighting you! No...wait. Correction. The Mikes are talking about the 1987 cult classic comedy Three O'Clock High, starring Casey Siemaszko and Richard Tyson, and "not" produced by Steven Spielberg. Listen in as Mike Butler and Mike Field discuss why this film has been criminally overlooked by fans of 80's teen comedy. From director Phil Joanou taking inspiration from Martin Scorsese's After Hours and Raging Bull, the use of Tangerine Dreams' score, to the way the film plays out in its final moments of actually having the titular three o'clock fight. The Mikes also discuss how the film eschews typical teen "archetypes" and displays a heightened, but perhaps slightly more realistic look at how high school and being a teenager really works. Butler breaks down why he believes this film is better than many of the John Hughes teen films of the 80's, especially The Breakfast Club and Mike Field argues that had Spielberg kept his name attached to this picture, it would be remembered not as a cult comedy, but a classic comedy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

State of Grace is a 1990 American neo-noir crime film directed by Phil Joanou and starring Sean Penn, Ed Harris and Gary Oldman, also featuring Robin Wright, John Turturro, and John C. Reilly. Written by playwright Dennis McIntyre, the film was executive-produced by Ned Dowd, Randy Ostrow, and Ron Rotholz, with a musical score by Ennio Morricone. Although the film was not a box office success and its release overshadowed by that of the similarly-themed Goodfellas, it was received positively by most critics. Shot on location in New York City, the film was inspired by the real-life Hell's Kitchen gang the Westies. Coincidentally, Penn was strongly considered for the lead role of Henry Hill in Goodfellas before he starred in this film. A New York cop is recruited to return to his hometown and infiltrate the mob ran by his best friend's brother. Gone for a decade, Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) is welcomed back into the fold in his Irish-American neighborhood in New York City. A one-time street tough, Terry is now an undercover officer targeting crime boss Frankie Flannery (Ed Harris). In the name of duty, Terry rekindles his dormant friendship with Frankie's younger brother, Jackie (Gary Oldman). But as Terry gets closer to his goal, his feelings for the youngest Flannery, his old flame Kathleen (Robin Wright), complicate his mission. It's part two of Colin's talk with How is this Movie? podcast host Dana Buckler. R-rated movies aren't what they used to be, but it was Dana's discussion of great R-rated films that attracted the attention of Phil Joanou, the director of Three O'Clock High, Entropy, and U2: Rattle and Hum. He also made one of Dana's favorite films, State of Grace, where Joanou had his hands full with Sean Penn and Gary Oldman. Colin not only gets to mention C.H.U.D. for the first time ever, he also offers his list of ten movies he loves, one of which is Dana's favorite: Jaws. Apparently, even a malfunctioning 1970s shark still makes both of them scared to go in the water. Plus, Dana tells us why he loves James Cameron and Quentin Tarantino and why the Rock is no Arnold Schwarzenegger. And, if you want discussion of newer movies, Colin and Dana examine the greatness of the low budget character study The Florida Project. It's another episode of movie madness!
