When I learned that house and dance music legend Crystal Waters has been finishing her first new album since 1997 and was getting ready to share singles and do interviews and therefore might be up for talking with me, I was so geeked.  I've been a fan since the early 90s when huge hits like "Gypsy Woman" and "100% Pure Love" were all over the radio, and it was an honor to get to connect with her for episode 120 and a conversation about her songwriting process, how she got her start in music, and why this current creative phase is one of the most exciting in her thirty-plus year career.  Crystal recently shared a great new single called "You & Me" -- a collaboration with the Swedish duo ManyFew -- and she was also recently honored during Miami Music Week at the inaugural Femmy Awards with awards for The Voice of House and the Female Icon Award. And there will be a lot more new music coming from Crystal in the remainder of this year, and live shows, too!

Multi-platinum singer-songwriter, Crystal Waters — whose chart-topping '90s hits include “Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)” and “100% Pure Love,” — has been in the industry for over three decades. Music journalists say Waters paved the way for many Black and female artists in dance music at a time when critics quickly shunned the genre as a passing fad. Unfortunately, her new singles fail to get the attention of today's commercial radio or digital music programmers. The acclaimed singer tells I SEE U that payola still exists and she has to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for her songs to gain airplay and notoriety. Join us as host Eddie Robinson explores the life and career of house music goddess, Crystal Waters. She chats unguarded about surviving a music industry that rewards certain white electronic dance artists but neglects DJ's and producers of color who represent the genre's original creators. The Howard University scholar also acknowledges the profound impact of how a Black, cultural phenomenon in American television played a significant role in undermining her pursuit for more stardom.

Brian Hyland was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York City. He studied guitar and clarinet as a child, and sang in his church choir. When aged 14 he co-founded the harmony group the Del-Fi's, which recorded a demo but failed to secure a recording contract. Hyland was eventually signed by Kapp Records as a solo artist, issuing his debut single, "Rosemary", in late 1959. The label employed the Brill Building songwriting duo of Lee Pockriss and Paul Vance to work with Hyland on the follow-up, "Four Little Heels (The Clickety Clack Song)", which was a minor hit, and the songwriting duo continued to work with Hyland.  In August 1960, Hyland scored his first and biggest hit single, at the age of 16, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini", written by Vance and Pockriss. It was a novelty song that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (No. 8 in the UK) and sold almost a million copies in the first two months of its release and over two million copies in total. Hyland moved on to ABC-Paramount Records, where he began working with the songwriting and production team of Gary Geld and Peter Udell, and further hits followed with "Let Me Belong to You" and "I'll Never Stop Wanting You". In 1961, Hyland appeared as himself on the March 6 episode of the game show To Tell the Truth. He received three votes. Hyland's other major hit during this period was 1962's "Sealed with a Kiss", which reached No. 3 in 1962 on both the American and UK Singles Chart. Another 1962 hit was "Ginny Come Lately", which reached No. 21 on the U.S. chart and No. 5 in the UK. Hyland's 1962 Top 30 hit "Warmed-Over Kisses (Leftover Love)" incorporated elements of country music into his work, which continued with singles including "I May Not Live to See Tomorrow" and "I'm Afraid to Go Home" and on the 1964 album Country Meets Folk. This approach was out of step with the changes brought about by British Invasion bands. Hyland's commercial success became limited, but he continued that in vein and had further hits with "The Joker Went Wild" and "Run, Run, Look and See", working with producer Snuff Garrett and session musicians including J. J. Cale and Leon Russell. Hyland appeared on national television programs such as American Bandstand and The Jackie Gleason Show, and toured both internationally and around America with Dick Clark in the Caravan of Stars. The caravan was in Dallas, Texas, on the day of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. To commemorate the event,[according to whom?] Hyland wrote the song "Mail Order Gun", which he recorded and eventually released on his 1970 eponymous album. From 1963 through 1969, Hyland scored several minor hits, but none reached higher than No. 20 ("The Joker Went Wild") on the U.S. pop chart. An album released in 1964 featured numbers that hearkened back to the 1950s including such hits as "Pledging My Love" and "Moments to Remember"—at a time when The Beatles and other British Invasion acts were drowning out American artists. Hyland afterward shifted into a phase of recording country music and folk rock styles. Songs such as "I'm Afraid to Go Home" and "Two Brothers" had an American Civil War theme. Hyland played the harmonica on a few numbers. Hyland attempted several departures from the norm, including the psychedelic single "Get the Message" (No. 91 on the U.S. pop chart), and "Holiday for Clowns" (No. 94), but despite their more contemporary arrangements, they failed to get much airplay. He went on to chart just two more top 40 hits, both cover versions: "Gypsy Woman", a 1961 hit for the Impressions written by Curtis Mayfield, and "Lonely Teardrops", a 1959 hit for Jackie Wilson. Hyland recorded both in 1970, and Del Shannon produced the tracks. "Gypsy Woman" reached No. 3 on the 1970 U.S. pop chart, making it the second-biggest hit of his career, selling over one million copies, and being certified gold by the RIAA in January 1971. Two of his previous hits, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" and "Sealed with a Kiss", were also awarded gold discs. In 1975, "Sealed With A Kiss" became a hit again in the UK (No. 7) and Hyland performed the song on Top of the Pops on July 31 of the same year. By 1977, he and his family had settled in New Orleans, and in 1979 the In a State of Bayou album, on which he had worked with Allen Toussaint, was issued by the Private Stock label. In June 1988, Dutch singer Albert West asked Hyland to record with him some duets of Hyland's hits: "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini", "Sealed With A Kiss", and "Ginny Come Lately". The latter song had been covered before by West in 1973, becoming a huge European hit and his biggest. Their duet of "Itsy Bitsy ..." was released as a single and reached No. 43 on the Dutch singles chart. Hyland and West performed on TV shows in Germany, Belgium and a Dutch TV special in Aruba. Hyland has continued to tour internationally.

Label: Decca 31495Year: 1963Condition: M-Last Price: $35.00. Not currently available for sale. Both sides of this single charted, and actually the fine B side was the bigger hit. But the remarkable, Soulful "Gypsy Woman" (check out the mp3 "snippet" of it) charted first and was the intended A side. Well worth seeking out! By this way, the singer is credited here as 'Rick Nelson.' Note: The picture sleeve is a particularly beautiful example...Its only flaw is a single staple in one top corner. The 45 itself looks almost new (Labels, Vinyl) and has pristine Mint sound.

This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Slade Echeverria and Danny Stravers of the genre flipping band ANARBOR. As Slade goes on to tell us, the band started fast, signing to Hopeless Records early in the bands formation. With that came  some great opportunities to perform on Warped Tour and having their music featured on a number of T.V. shows and networks. Slade could not thank the label enough for all they did for them, but with time comes change. As a band matures, so do the members of a band and people look to do other things. That was just a bump in the road for ANARBOR,  Slade would continue to write and find people like Danny to create new sounds with. I get a lot of pleasure listening to bands try new things and when it works it's exhilarating. ANARBOR has done just that for me, they grew not only in life but sonically as well. Join Danny, Slade and I as we search for that “Letter In A Suitcase” from the “Gypsy Woman” on the “Carefree Highway.”

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ CRYSTAL WATERS # 071 - PART 1 Crystal Waters a true icon in house music speaks about her humble beginnings from a young child and being exposed to some of the greatest musicians because of her dad who was a famous jazz musician. She toured with her dad as a young artist and was able to get an education of what it is like to be an artist. As she finished college she takes a job with the State, at the Parole Board. Hungering to write music she hooks up with a keyboard player and they begin to start writing demos on a 4-track recorder. She then proceeds to go to a music conference in her hometown and is attracted to the Basement Boys because of their leather jackets that they were sporting at the time. She hands them her cassette demo and the rest is history. "Gypsy Woman" is created and a deal is signed. Crystal shares with us how her life changed from that moment the single dropped and became a huge pop hit.

Per #Wikipedia Crystal Waters is an American house and dance music singer and songwriter, best known for her 1990s dance hits "Gypsy Woman", "100% Pure Love", and 2007's "Destination Calabria" with Alex Gaudino. All three of her studio albums produced a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as one of the most successful dance artists of all time. Her accolades include six ASCAP Songwriter awards, three American Music Award nominations, an MTV Video Music Award nod, four Billboard Music Awards and twelve #1 Billboard Dance Chart hits. Her hit song "Gypsy Woman" was sampled in musician Trey Songz's 2017 song "1x1" from his album Tremaine the Album, which she co-wrote. _________ Waters' first job in the music world was as a backup singer at a local recording studio. She realized she wanted the creative control of writing her own music. Meeting the Basement Boys at a D.C. conference, they agreed to collaborate. Waters' self-described style was jazz and the Basement Boys was house. The first two songs she wrote for the 'Boys were "Makin' Happy" and "Gypsy Woman". Waters signed a writing contract with Mercury Records in 1989.[citation needed] Her single "Makin' Happy", with contributions by remixer Steve "Silk" Hurley, shot quickly to #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs.[citation needed] With her 1994 follow-up album Storyteller, Waters made a mainstream comeback with her hit single "100% Pure Love", which hit number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100,[5] #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs and became one of the longest-charting singles on the Hot 100 at 45 weeks ("Gypsy Woman" had remained on the chart for 16 weeks). Along with the single, her second album Storyteller, sold over 1 million copies in the United States. Feminist scholar and social activist bell hooks described Waters as "fierce and politically on the job" because of the singer's socially conscious lyrics. Waters performing in 2013. In 1996, Waters participated in the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Rio, which was produced by the Red Hot Organization, performing the song "The Boy from Ipanema". In 2007, the mega European hit "Destination Calabria" by Alex Gaudino, featuring vocals by Crystal Waters, went to #1 on the European Pop Chart in over 30 countries. The track is a mashup, taking the instrumental from Rune's "Calabria" and the vocals from Alex Gaudino's and Crystal Waters' "Destination Unknown", both originally released in 2003. It was produced with the help of Maurizio Nari and Ronnie Milani (Nari & Milani), matching the saxophone hook/riff from "Calabria" to Crystal Waters' voice. "Destination Calabria" was released as a 12-inch single by the Italian label Rise Records, and as a CD single on March 19, 2007 by British label Data Records. It originally charted in Australia in February 2004, peaking at #98 under the title "Destination Unknown" before being re-released as "Destination Calabria" and reaching #2 in 2007. In 2012, "Le Bump" with Yolanda Be Cool gave Waters another #1 on the Beatport House Chart. With DJ Chris Cox in 2013, the #1 Billboard Dance Club Songs hit "Mama Hey" was listed as one of Billboard's "Top 50 Dance Songs of 2013". In November 2015, Waters released "Synergy", and in October 2016 she released "Believe". Both songs quickly rose to the #1 spot on the Billboard Dance Club Songs.[citation needed] Her 2017 single "Testify" with Hifi Sean was released on Defected Records and went straight to the A-List on BBC Radio and garnered another #1 spot on the Billboard Dance Club Songs. Her third collaboration with Sted-E & Hybrid Heights, titled "I Am House", reached #1 in the club charts in Spring 2018, giving Waters a total of twelve #1 singles in the US Billboard Dance Club Songs. In February 2020, she began a monthly radio/podcast show called "I Am House." Rumor has it, that in 1989, Crystal Waters was working as a song writer when she penned "Gypsy Woman" for another artist. Whether or not that's how it went down, we're really not sure, but what we do know is that with the first chords, the song is undeniably deliscious! The chords, the beat, the melody, the lyrics, the energy, the distinctive voice of Crystial Waters... La da dee La dee dah...Everyone get up and dance! Yes, over 20 years later and we're still dancing to that song as well as Making Happy, Pure Love and all of the other wonderful music created by Crystal Waters. In this segment of the show, Crystal Waters joins us for an interview, takes your calls, and talks about all of the wonderful things she's up to right now! Only on WJBR-Internet Radio!
