Ontario's Prince Edward County is a region we hype up on the pod regularly, so we were stoked to have the newest brewery in town hang out and crush some brews. Husband and wife team Colin and Steph VanderMeulen joined Cee and Nate to chat about the Dune Hopper story and Colin's history in craft beer, why they try not to fit in but offer something different to their neighbours, their approach to their impeccable branding and how that flows to their taproom and merch, why dogs and kids are encouraged, the importance of co-signs and working with other great breweries, why the County is such a great place for beer and wine tourism (and why Quebecois folks love it), and how they plan to slowly expand across the province. They got into some fantastic Dune Hopper brews - Tent Pitcher Craft Lager, Solo Trip (Simcoe) Single Hop IPA, Hatchet NEIPA, Adventure (Strawberry Passionfruit) Sour, and Hard Water (Banana Seltzer). Always fun to discover a phenomenal brewery - cheers!  BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Great Lakes (https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com) in Cleveland is an American craft beer institution—a brewery that got its start in the late '80s, when the concept of smaller breweries still seemed foreign to most drinkers. Now, 36 years later, the scale is much larger than it was in those early days on the seven-barrel pub system—yet some of those early brands persevere. While those beers inevitably evolve amid shifts in scale and tastes, the core ideas that inform them haven't changed. In this episode, longtime brewmaster Mark Hunger and co-CEO Steven Pauwels, the former brewmaster at Kansas City's Boulevard, talk about that evolution as well as new developments in hop-forward beers. Along the way, they touch on: brewing lager with proprietary yeast for a signature brewery flavor using pressurized fermentation and warmer temperatures for faster lagers using automation while double-checking with human testing adding a touch of dryness and drinkability through sparge pH adjustment using sulfur as a tool for flavor and shelf stability Oregon-grown Mt. Hood hops for American lager character evaluating Munich malt for their annual Oktoberfest beer using public variety hops such as Triumph, but not Centennial, in Midwest-style IPA brewing filtered, clear IPA with London Ale III yeast And more. Boulder's Upslope (https://upslopebrewing.com) has been brewing Craft Lager since long before lager brewing was “cool,” and today the small brewery has built a production methodology for the longtime core offering that optimizes both quality and production efficiency. In this episode, head brewer Alex Meyer discusses the way the brewery makes their signature lager with a litany of unconventional ingredients and processes, and shares how they employ similar iconoclastic approaches with their Japanese-style rice lager, and 4-year-barrel-aged Grand Reserve. Along the way, Meyer discusses: brewing lager with standard two row malt and white wheat lager fermentation under pressure managing sulfur production in pressure fermentation cropping and repitching yeast using exogenous enzymes to facilitate rice lager fermentation with 55% flaked rice American lager hop varieties like Sterling and Contessa feeding healthy high gravity fermentations managing long-term oxidation in extended barrel aging And more. Months ago, the boys at Domestic Pints ONLY issued a challenge: try to find a cheap 'craft' lager under $3.00. And after some searching, and finally a day where we could all chat together, we found them and delivered! This week, John, Tom, and Alex discuss their selections of surprisingly inexpensive beer outside the typical InBev/Miller Coors conglomerate. First up is Alex with Last Spike Brewery's THE DUKE lager. Following that is John with the classic cheap Quebec brew: TREMBLAY BLONDE. Last up is Tom, as we sample the plaid-branded REVELSTOKE LAGER from Mt. Begbie Brewery. Alex also talks briefly about his experience at the Guinness Brewery in Ireland and also buying Bud Light at an Irish pub (we sort of digress into talking regional difference with macro beers). Finally we wrap up with our scores. Not only were these beers cheap, but surprisingly good! See, craft brewing isn't JUST chocolate milk imperial dry hopped stouts! Next week, we will be back with another brewery spotlight from Ontario - stay tuned! Wednesday January 26 2022 - and yesterday the Detroit Free Press called 2022 the year of the craft lager. We'll see if they're right. Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com First - kudos to Four Quarters in Winooski, VT for turning their outdoor patio into a skating rink. It's a great use of a space during the coldest months of the year in this area. You can check out the video of the outdoor skating area (complete with a fire pit) at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=639426120845987&extid=CL-UNK-UNK-UNK-AN_GK0T-GK1C and check out 4Quarters at https://www.4qbc.com/ But - I found out - they're not the only one doing it! Nope - there's Fifty West Brewing https://fiftywestbrew.com/ice-skating/, Schram Haus Brewery http://schramhausbrewery.com/icerink/, and Throwback Brewery (whose was unfortunately damaged, but re-opening Friday) https://www.throwbackbrewery.com/blog/therink/ all have skating on site. Brewery Hockey leagues anyone? When you re-rank all the new wines, it shakes things up a bit - and turns out you might be able to get a great value as a result of the new rankings from Wine Spectator. I've frequently gone back to some advice from a friend of mine that the best bottle of wines often only costs around $15 - $25 dollars. Sounds like that almost still holds true as The Top 10 Wine Values of 2021 rankings meet three criteria: They have rated 90 points or higher on Wine Spectator's 100-point scale. They cost $40 or less and provide three other things - quality, price, and availability. They're wines with solid track records that are good representatives of their regions. Get the rundown and put together your shopping list at https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/01/25/10-best-wine-values-from-wine-spectators-new-rankings/ I bet this will be talked about at the Naples Winter Wine Fest this weekend! And this time of year is when IPAs are most popular - so let's look at eight highly rated Double IPA's and see how they rank when it's a blind taste testing panel. Dirt Wolf and Florida man are the only two I haven't tried yet, but by the rankings, there are no losers on this list. Even the 8th ranked Double IPA is described as a well-made beer that's complex, flavorful, and easy to drink - and it seems to get better from there! However, it was a smashing success for Lawson's Finest Liquids out of Waitsfield, Vermont as they took two top spots! At number 3 was Second Fiddle Double Fiddle, number 2 was Bell's Hopslam and at number 1 was Lawson's Finest Double Sunshine. https://uproxx.com/life/high-rated-double-ipas-blind-taste-tested-and-ranked/ Next Time: Coming up Another Round, the special interview editions of The Boozebuddy Update are tentatively scheduled to start on February 5th. Chris Tropeano, known to friends as "Tropes," dislikes more of his beer than he likes. It's not that it's not good beer, but as the head brewer for Resident Culture (https://residentculturebrewing.com), he can't not focus on the small things that he should have done better. There are always things to improve, or tweaks that could produce a more characterful or cohesive beer. But it's that constant focus on improvement that has helped catapult Resident Culture to a respected position among fellow Southeastern craft brewers over their relatively short three years of existence. In this episode, Tropes discusses honestly evaluating beer, fixing the problems that often arise when brewing hazy IPAs, dealing with harsh hops astringency from high hopping loads, building brewhouse and cellar processes to deal with variances in hops quality, structuring hazy IPAs with edgy notes for contrast, and managing "hop stank." “The cool dry hop works really well if you have great hops and you’re sure that they’re going to produce a really good beer," says Tropes. "But if you’re ever unsure, we’ve found that a little active fermentation dry hopping can really transform hops that might not really speak to you out of the bag. It’s an insurance policy on hops that you’re not 100% on.” The conversation turns to traditional Berliner weisse, as Tropes explains their mixed culture approach to Berliner and the benefits—like incredible head retention—along with ways they speed up and pump the brakes on developing acidity. Later, the conversation turns to lagers, and he shares the ways their processes have evolved from spunding to krausening, along with the way they've incorporated seasonally-available malts into their lagers for the best possible flavor.
