Scotty Hargrave didn't invent extra-pale ale—he reinvented it, giving the style the definition it had lacked before. Chris O'Connor, VP of brewing operations at Prost in Northglenn, Colorado, has built a career on being a process nerd. He spent a decade in engineering for the pharmaceutical industry before switching gears and following his passion for brewing. His analytical approach to colllecting data, testing, and questioning conventional logic is a big part of what drives quality at Prost's award-winning lager program. The success spans three Great American Beer Festival medals in the past three years, including silver for Prost Pilsner in 2023 and two golds in 2025, for Schwarzbier and Viennal Lager. Despite that success, the production team recently made a leap, moving to a new house lager yeast—the Augustiner strain, instead of 34/70. In this episode, O'Connor discusses that careful process, plus: huskless endosperm mashing for a refined lager profile taking advantage of Prost's fully customized, five-vessel Kaspar Schulz brewhouse an intentional, eight-step decoction process—and completely changing it to accomodate a new yeast strain why they use “marine-blade” custom rakes to agitate the mash and decoctions using a vacuum-evaporation process after the kettle to drive off DMS precursors and other volatiles open fermentation and the impact of tank geometry using blind tasting, polls, and sales data to evaluate lagers made with the new yeast the palpable difference in sulfur impact from the 34/70 and Augustiner strains Ultimately, despite brewing traditional styles using traditional methods, O'Connor's view is that no process is sacred—challenge everything, test, observe, and always be ready to change. "A vida Luminosa" de João Rosas abre Festival de cinema português "Olá Paris"

A segunda edição do Festival de cinema português "Olá Paris" decorre até este domingo. A abertura, nesta sexta-feira, contou com a ante estreia de "A vida luminosa", a primeira longa metragem de ficção do cineasta João Rosas, que estreou em Portugal no ano passado. O retrato de um jovem lisboeta, à procura de um lugar ao sol, entre uma ruptura amorosa, e a descoberta de uma jovem cuja luz o vai ajudar a afirmar-se. A RFI esteve no local e falou com a actriz Cécile Matignon, o co produtor François d'Artemare e, obviamente, com o próprio realizador João Rosas que começa por comentar como descobriu Francisco Melo, quando este era apenas um adolescente de 11 anos. O actor não profissional que deu corpo a Nicolau, hoje com 24 anos, e o protagonista de "A vida luminosa" e que vimos crescer, nas três curtas metragens que antecederam esta longa. Descobri-lo foi um acaso, porque quando ele participou no "Entrecampos", ele nem sequer era o protagonista desse filme. Na altura ele tinha 11 anos, portanto era apenas uma criança engraçada. Enfim, como outras que participaram no filme, mas com quem eu me entendia bem. E como eu na altura, depois já estava logo a seguir escrevi o "Maria do Mar", que era sobre um jovem de 13, 14 anos e como protagonista e tinha que estar a trabalhar com o Francisco... Depois decidi continuar a trabalhar com ele e a partir daí é que começou um bocadinho a ganhar forma. A ideia, depois de ser uma história mais longa e de continuá-la noutros filmes. Apesar de lhe dizerem que ele até nem tinha muito jeito para isso, não é ?   Sim, ele próprio o diz. O que é interessante e para mim, fascinante, a um nível puramente pessoal é que de facto, acompanhar o crescimento dele também foi acompanhar o meu próprio crescimento como cineasta e, portanto, ir aprendendo a olhar o mundo através do cinema, construindo o meu próprio olhar, mas também através do olhar do Francisco, ão é ? Portanto, do Francisco/Nicolau que é esta personagem em que todos os filmes ele está em períodos de transição e, portanto, perante o ter que tomar decisões ou descobertas, pequenas descobertas do quotidiano, mas que podem por vezes ter o valor de uma epifania no curso da nossa vida. E, portanto, para este filme foi mais uma vez essa ideia de retratá-lo num período de transição, um bocadinho de no final da juventude, para o que seria o início de uma idade adulta. E como é que essa idade adulta é vista ou vivida pelos jovens de hoje em dia ?   Portanto, até nem é só ele, também há a Mariana também há o Miguel, não é ? Há duas personagens que já acompanha há algum tempo. Mas também há agora aqui a personagens novas. Cécile Matignon, por exemplo, um elenco também internacional. As cenas são muito escritas, pensadas, concebidas. Pode falar-nos do processo de escrita, do guião e depois da rodagem?   Sim, o processo acaba por ser um vai e vem entre o meu trabalho, mais solitário de escrita e, depois de dramaturgia e de preparação, ão é ? Um trabalho de secretária, é um trabalho de diálogo e de partilha com as pessoas que vão entrando no filme ao longo do processo. E, portanto, é um processo muito longo, porque, de facto, eu aproveito também o casting para saciar a minha própria curiosidade por pessoas que quer conhecer, neste caso os jovens, muitos deles estrangeiros, que estão a viver em Lisboa e que mudaram também uma certa maneira de viver em Lisboa. E, portanto, aproveito ao máximo os recursos da produção para estender este casting e saciar a minha própria curiosidade. E depois os ensaios também são um período muito longo em que há, de facto este vai e vem entre o que as pessoas, a voz das pessoas ao ler o texto e a voz que eu quero, depois, também dar aos personagens escrevendo. É por isso é que os filmes são muito escritos. Mas a partir deste trabalho conjunto. Mas claro, pois isto tudo é fixado numa dada altura através dos ensaios, não é? E há muitos ensaios. E, portanto, são muitos escritos, mas escritos muitas vezes a várias mãos, sendo que depois eu tenho de tomar a decisão como um maestro que decide quem é que fala quando, mas respeitando a linguagem e a música de cada um. Neste filme em particular, interessava-me também trabalhar esta ideia dos vários sotaques de portugueses, os estrangeiros. Do Brasil e dentro, mesmo de Portugal, portanto do Sul do Norte, enfim, ter esta riqueza também polifónica de uma língua.   E você também gosta muito de tratar a dúvida. A dúvida, que é uma coisa desorienta muita gente, não é? E o Nicolau está cheio de dúvidas. Tem 24 anos. Gostaria, eventualmente, de ser autónomo, mas não é. Ter um trabalho, ter estabilidade, mas não tem. Também há uma denúncia de uma precariedade que se calhar tomou conta também de Lisboa, a sua cidade ? Sim. Enfim, a precariedade, não é que tenha chegado agora, não é ? Portanto, a precariedade, também já se falava em precariedade quando eu tinha a idade do Nicolau e a vida também já era precária na altura. Agora era uma precariedade talvez menos evidente. E era diferente. Obviamente. Era uma cidade muito diferente, não necessariamente melhor, mas já existia precariedade nessa altura, não é? E, portanto, eu acho que a dúvida que... É introduzida aqui num canto magnífico no início do filme.   Sim, sim, de uma peça do Brecht. Mas eu acho que a dúvida, embora possa ser paralisante, não é ? Porque todos nós provavelmente passámos por isso momentos que temos dúvidas e não conseguimos decidir. E isso paralisa-nos e cria-nos angústia. Mas há também uma dúvida que é um questionamento que faz avançar e como é que nós, através da dúvida, do questionamento, podemos avançar e descobrir coisas ? É, portanto, a dúvida é sempre um caminho para uma descoberta e, portanto, para mim, o próprio fazer o filme e daí também ter começado com esse canto. Para além de espelhar um bocadinho o estado emocional do protagonista do Nicolau, reflecte o próprio processo em que as dúvidas que eu tenho sobre o filme são o que fazem o filme avançar e, portanto, acho que também, hoje em dia, em particular em que vivemos numa época em que há todo um discurso identitário em que apresenta certezas e visões fechadas sobre o mundo... A dúvida, pelo contrário, é porosidade e abertura. E acho que isso é cada vez mais um gesto político que é preciso sublinhar.   Precisamente, falemos um pouco da multiculturalidade. Já no filme anterior, no documentário, você tinha se aproximado e de que maneira, dos operários das obras, naquele estaleiro de um prédio que se veio a tornar um hotel de luxo em Lisboa. Uma Lisboa a mudar a uma velocidade muito rápida. E são pessoas que vêm dos quatro cantos do mundo, nomeadamente de África.   Guiné-Bissau, sim ! Diria que os protagonistas, embora seja um filme plural, portanto, não há propriamente um protagonista. talvez a cidade, mas não é um filme. Portanto, num estaleiro de obra onde há dezenas de trabalhadores e nenhum acaba por ter mais protagonismo que os outros, uma regra um bocadinho de todos são protagonistas por igual nessa ideia de filme coral. Mas é verdade que, em particular, um grupo de trabalhadores da Guiné-Bissau foi aquele do qual eu me senti mais próximo e que, depois, mais uma vez, como neste filme de ficção, perante uma realidade completamente diferente. O filme foi também uma maneira de desenvolver relações de amizade com estas pessoas e o filme foi feito nesse espírito da partilha, do diálogo e não necessariamente de um gesto meu de lançar um olhar sobre este grupo de pessoas, neste caso guineenses, mas de estar tempo com eles. E, portanto, o filme ser feito a partir desse tempo passado em conjunto. No fundo, como este filme de ficção, portanto, a ideia acaba por ser sempre essa. Tanto na ficção como no documentário e o cinema ser uma forma também de passar tempo com as pessoas que eu convido para os filmes ou que a realidade me traz, por acaso e por ser uma forma de relacionamento com a cidade, o próprio cinema.   A vida luminosa pode ser vida do Nicolau, o protagonista, mas é também, de alguma forma, a vida de Lisboa, a capital portuguesa, que é uma personagem de pleno direito, diria eu no seu filme. Você continua apaixonado pelas cidades, pela sua arquitectura e pela maré humana que lá vive, não é ? Sim, eu acho que filmar cidades foi um bocadinho o que me levou a começar a pensar o cinema. Com "Birth of a city" [filme documental de 2009 rodado em Londres].   Sim, mas mesmo como espectador. Lembro-me de, ainda adolescente, ver por acaso, com a minha mãe no cinema, o filme "Caro Diário", do Nanni Moretti. E aliás, até adormeci a meio do filme. Mas [o cinesta iraniano] Kiarostami dizia que alguns dos filmes preferidos dele eram filmes em que ele tinha adormecido. Portanto, ele, no início do filme diz isso ao filmar umas imensas fachadas e bairros de Roma. "Que belo Seria um filme feito apenas com fachadas !" Portanto, eu desde aí isso ficou como uma espécie de mantra que, pela minha própria depois vivência das cidades em que vivi. Tornou-se um fascínio de facto pela vida urbana, não tanto pela arquitectura, embora a arquitectura obviamente também faça parte de uma cidade, mas mais as práticas do quotidiano e, portanto, a vivência quotidiana. E como é que a cidade é um lugar de encontro entre pessoas diferentes? E como é que essa negociação da alteridade ou com a alteridade não é com as pessoas que são diferentes de nós e com quem nós partilhamos o espaço? E como é que as cidades podem ser vistas, pelo menos para mim, como arquivos de histórias, Seja a própria cidade enquanto espaço físico que me dá elementos que me inspiram para escrever as cenas, sejam bairros, ruas, cafés, esquinas, paragens de autocarro ou de metro ou as próprias pessoas, obviamente. Que levam cada uma a sua história pela cidade e que através de viver a cidade, constroem a cidade. E assim me ajudam a construir cada fio.     Cécile Matignon encarna Chloé, jovem francesa instalada em Portugal, cuja energia positiva vai iluminar um Nicolau, algo perdido perante os tantos desafios com que a juventude o confronta. Esta começa por se referir ao gosto desta estreia na sua terra natal, a França, do filme de João Rosas.   Teve o sabor de uma viagem, de uma viagem de volta a uma das minhas casas. E foi um excelente pretexto para voltar a ver os meus amigos e esta cidade que já conhecia há alguns anos. E também de ver quais são as reacções do filme num país que não é lusófono. E ver como é que isto está recebido. E finalmente ver com algumas conversas, já que começamos a ter que essas questões que aparecem no filme finalmente são transversais a outros países também são questões de gerações que partilhamos de um país a outro. Há muito de Chloé em si ?   Há muito de Chloé em mim ? Sim, acho que temos uma energia parecida. Acho que é uma coisa que nos diferencia muito é que eu sou muito mais precária do que Chloé. Porque a Chloé, no filme, é esta pessoa que é menos precária de todos porque vem de fora e tem essa energia de" Pá, vou trabalhar em França e vou viajar e não sei o quê ! Insurge-se contra os preços dos salários em Portugal. E é uma coisa que é muito engraçada. É que no filme digo nunca vou trabalhar por 5 € a hora. E o que faço eu, que fiz e que faço, às vezes, porque a realidade é assim. Mas, ou seja, é engraçado. Essa diferença de "Eu não sou portuguesa, venho de fora, mas fiz a escolha de trabalhar para a cultura portuguesa e para o país português". E então também estou a jogar este jogo dessa precariedade. E finalmente, eu acho que me identifico mais neste aspecto a outras personagens do filme do que à própria Chloé. Mas de resto,  energia e tudo, somos parecidas.   François d'Artemare, presença assídua no cinema português, com Manoel de Oliveira, João Canijo, ou lusófono, como com o guineense Flora Gomes, ou francês, como com Nadine Trintignant, este produtor dos Filmes do Tejo e dos Films de l'Après midi, co-produziu "A vida luminosa". Ele comenta a satisfação desta estreia parisisense no cinema Club de l'étoile com o qual tem tantas ligações.   É um percurso um pouco... tortuoso, não, quase direito... Porque esta estreia aqui no "Clube de l'étoile", quando estava a preparar o filme de Nadine Trintignan em Paris, em 94, até... Era aqui no Club de l'étoile, era com uma produtora francesa que era na época dona do Clube de l'étoile. E o nosso escritório era no Club de l'étoile. Era no prédio ao lado, e passávamos todo o nosso tempo aqui no Clube de l'étoile. Não imaginava nesta época, onde tinha 28 anos, era jovem director de produção que 32 anos depois, já assistia a projecções de filmes que produzi, que co-produzi. Mas não imaginava, nesta época, que eu ia continuar a fazer, a organizar projecções aqui. Estou feliz com isso. Estou feliz de continuar a guardar uma ligação com Portugal. É óbvio que tenho uma ligação com Portugal. O meu filho é português. Depois de viver alguns anos em Barcelona, voltou a viver em Portugal há dois meses atrás. Continuo a ir  aí a Portugal imensas vezes. Mas o facto de continuar a fazer filmes em Portugal e continuar a produzir em Portugal é para mim importante. É uma coisa natural que me permite guardar uma ligação profissional de que gosto. Estava a produzir o filme do João Canijo...   Que entretanto nos deixou...   Que nos deixou agora. Era o quarto filme do João que estava a produzir. Gostava imenso do João e gosto de continuar a ter esta ligação com Portugal. Trabalhou também, penso, obviamente em Flora Gomes. A maior parte dos nossos ouvintes estão precisamente em África e conhecem este cineasta da África Ocidental da Guiné-Bissau. O que é que viu aqui no João Rosas e neste filme para apostar nele? Conheço o João há imenso tempo também. Há 20  anos acho. Eu tinha tinha visto as curtas do João e o documentário do João sobre Lisboa. A morte de uma cidade !    Sim, e gostei imenso do olhar que João tinha sobre os personagens. Ben Howe's brewing career reads more like that of a chef than a typical brewer—stints in Denmark, brewing jobs on both the East and West coasts, weeks spent interning at breweries that intrigued him—but one fateful visit to the Zehender brewery in Monchsambach opened his eyes to Franconian lager and inspired a nearly decade-long quest to understand the beer and its mechanisms of flavor. Cuarenta y cuatro años después, en 1975, el trío sevillano Triana saca El patio; su primer disco que ha pasado a la historia de la música por ser el que abre la puerta a la fusión entre el rock progresivo y el flamenco; el nacimiento del flamenco rock.Los siete temas de El patio, convertidos ya en clásicos del rock, no han perdido color ni luminosidad. De Todo es de color a Luminosa mañana, pasando por Recuerdos de una noche, Sé de un lugar, Diálogo, En el lago y Abre la puerta, Triana nos invita a entrar en un universo mágico creado por las notas de una guitarra española, unos teclados, una batería y una voz.Les dan vida, respectivamente, Eduardo Rodríguez Rodway, Jesús de la Rosa y Juan José Palacios, Tele. A ellos se unieron para la grabación del disco el bajista Manolo Rosa y el guitarra eléctrica Antonio Pérez García de Diego.En sus nueve años de historia, el trío sevillano publicó seis discos. Tras las de El patio, canciones como Quiero contarte, Tu frialdad o Una noche de amor desesperada se van filtrando en el paisaje sentimental de un país que hace la Transición hacia la democracia con la banda sonora de Triana como fondo. Temas que han sido guía para generaciones posteriores de músicos.Una historia (otra de sus canciones destacadas) que contamos en este documental con guión de Juan Ballesteros y realización de Miguel Ángel Coleto. En él se recogen los testimonios de Eduardo Rodríguez Rodway, el único miembro fundador de la banda con vida; de Luis Clemente, autor de la biografía Triana. At its height, Pompano Beach's Odd Breed in Pompano Beach was one of the best-regarded breweries in Florida, winning four GABF medals over a span of three years, and shipping mixed-culture beers to fans around the world. However, real-estate market forces ultimately worked against the niche brewery, and founder and brewer Matt Manthe closed up shop in the summer of 2024. That's no reason not to talk brewing, however, and Manthe learned plenty over his years shepherding his mixed cultures from homebrew to commercial scale, changing and adapting processes along the way. The city of Grodzisk Wielkopolski was once a major center of brewing in 19th century Poland, but political unrest, world wars, communism, and then misguided capitalism all played parts in closing the previous chapter of the city's brewing history in the early 90's. But the rise of craft beer also led to a resurgence in interest for obscure styles like the smoked wheat beer that made the city famous, and by 2016 a new group of owners relaunched the original Grodzisk brewery (https://browargrodzisk.com) with a heartfelt mission—to share this homegrown Polish beer style with the world.
