It is spoiled by drunkenness, gluttony, and too much study.” Newton was driven to understand things from first principles; he obsessively tried to quantify everything  Newton made his crowning scientific achievement at the age of 44, publishing the Principia in 1687; this work laid the foundation for classical mechanics, introducing his laws of motion and the law of universal gravitationNewton's child-like love for the world and his desire to understand the world around him led to his greatest breakthroughs Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIsaac Newton was one of the great geniuses in human history. On the latest episode of The Debrief, MT's editorial team discusses steps for rebuilding trust after a scandal and takes you into the heart of the dynamic pricing debate. It has been a year and a half since the CBI was engulfed by a sexual misconduct scandal that brought the business group to the brink of collapse. And alongside the resultant financial challenges, the organisation has faced an uphill battle to re-engage members and re-establish trust. Ethics crises are so damaging because they “call into question the very foundations of trust”, says David Rodin, founder and chair of advisory firm Principia. We discuss his steps for rebuilding this, starting with identifying the root causes (hint: it is rarely just a case of a few bad apples).Dynamic pricing has been catapulted into consumers' consciousness in recent weeks, after Oasis fans reacted angrily to being charged, in some cases, more than double the advertised price for tickets to the band's comeback tour. Ticketmaster is not the only business to have found itself at the sharp end of consumer sentiment – last year, Stonegate customers decried the pub group's decision to raise prices during peak times. Dynamic pricing is of course not new, but the increasing digitisation of operations means it is spreading to additional sectors. So, as companies consider the pros and cons, MT asked leaders and experts: how should businesses weigh up the potential reputational impact? We bring you a snapshot of the debate.Links:https://www.managementtoday.co.uk/rebuild-trust-scandal/culture/article/1888924https://www.managementtoday.co.uk/businesses-weigh-reputational-risk-when-deciding-whether-introduce-dynamic-pricing/down-to-business/article/1889421Credits:Presenters: Claire Warren and Antonia Garrett PeelProducer: Inga MarsdenArtwork: David Robinson Hosted on Acast. During this episode, US Air Force Captain Jose Davis discusses his paper, which is entitled: "Leveraging AI for Operations in the Information Environment: 3 Demonstrations in Disinformation, Social Media, and Entropy." The paper focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of Operations in the Information Environment (OIE), particularly for the Air Force. The paper presents three case studies demonstrating how AI can positively impact OIE and advocates for direct AI research in this area. Additionally, he'll recap an information campaign that US Air Forces in Europe conducted to assure Baltic NATO Allies, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. What are the practical outcomes in the Information Environment (a complex system) when entropy is influenced, pushed either higher or lower? e.g. Hypothetically, when high entropy is present, humans deploy simplifying heuristics, so this should help improve Key Leader Engagements' (KLE) timing and improve KLE dossiers. Or with PA/IO, high entropy hypothetically may demand a simplified messaging campaign. In what other ways can AI be leveraged to combat nefarious AI use for disinformation? The daughter of a prominent Roman family, she was given in marriage despite her reluctance, but was widowed after less than a year. Following the example of the prophetess Anna, she dedicated her widowhood to God and turned her fine house in Rome into a monastery, living there in strict asceticism.   “When the Church was riven by controversies about the doctrines of Origen, Saint Marcella kept silent for a while but, deciding at length to take up the cause of Orthodoxy, and maintaining a sweet and gentle manner in the exchanges, she succeeded in confounding the arguments of the heretics.” (Ormylia Synaxarion)   When the Goths invaded and pillaged Rome in 410 they broke into her house. Marcella received them calmly, but when they demanded money she answered that no one as poorly clothed as she was could be expected to have any money. At this the invaders beat her mercilessly despite her great age. She bore their blows without complaint, asking only that they spare her spiritual daughter Principia. Struck to the heart by her response, the barbarians took her and her disciple to the Church of St Paul, where she reposed two days later.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A review of Principia Qualia, published by jessicata on July 12, 2023 on LessWrong. Principia Qualia, by Michael Johnson, is a long document describing an approach to theorizing about and studying consciousness. I have heard enough positive things about the document to consider it worth reviewing. I will split the paper (and the review) into 4 parts: Motivating bottom-up physicalist consciousness theories Reviewing Integrated Information Theory and variants Specifying the problem of consciousness and valence Symmetry I already disagree with part 1, but bottom-up is still a plausible approach. Part 2 makes sense to pay attention to conditional on the conclusions of part 1, and is basically a good explanation of IIT and its variants. Part 3 describes desiderata for a bottom-up theory of qualia and valence, which is overall correct. Part 4 motivates and proposes symmetry as a theory of valence, which has me typing things like "NO PLEASE STOP" in my notes document. Motivating bottom-up physicalist consciousness theories The document is primarily concerned with theories of consciousness for the purpose of defining valence: the goodness or badness of an experience, in terms of pleasure and pain. The document motivates this in terms of morality: we would like to determine things about the consciousness of different agents whether they are human, non-human animal, or AIs. The study of valence is complicated by, among other things, findings of different brain circuitry for "wanting", "liking", and "learning". Neural correlates of pleasure tend to be concentrated in a small set of brain regions and hard to activate, while neural correlates of pain tend to be more distributed and easier to activate. The methods of affective neuroscience are limited in studying valence and consciousness more generally. Johnson writes, "In studying consciousness we've had to rely on either crude behavioral proxies, or subjective reports of what we're experiencing." The findings of affective neuroscience do not necessarily tell us much about metaphysically interesting forms of valence and consciousness (related to Chalmers' distinction between easy problems of consciousness and the hard problem of consciousness). Johnson defines top-down and bottom-up theories, and motivates bottom-up theories: There are two basic classes of consciousness theories: top-down (aka 'higher-order' or 'cognitive' theories) and bottom-up. Top-down theories are constructed around the phenomenology of consciousness (i.e., how consciousness feels) as well as the high-level dynamics of how the brain implements what we experience...However, if we're looking for a solid foundation for any sort of crisp quantification of qualia, top-down theories will almost certainly not get us there, since we have no reason to expect that our high-level internal phenomenology has any crisp, intuitive correspondence with the underlying physics and organizational principles which give rise to it...Instead, if we're after a theory of valence/qualia/phenomenology as rigorous as a physical theory, it seems necessary to take the same bottom-up style of approach as physics does when trying to explain something like charge, spin, or electromagnetism. If our high-level phenomenology has no "crisp, intuitive correspondence with the underlying physics and organizational principles which give rise to it", it's unclear why a bottom-up theory would succeed either, To explain my take on this, I will first explain how my motivation for studying consciousness differs from Johnson's. Johnson is primarily concerned with identifying conscious agents experiencing pleasure and pain, for the purpose of optimizing the universe for more pleasure. I am primarily concerned with consciousness as a philosophical epistemic and ontological problem, which is foundational f...

You believe in a lot of things. But what do you believe in the most?Go into the quiet security of your mind, and you will know that you value one of these more highly than the other four.GovernmentBusinessScienceFamilyDeity“American rates of religious affiliation have plummeted to their lowest point in the past 73 years. And nowhere are they lower than in knowledge-industry hubs like Silicon Valley, where high-skilled jobs are growing the fastest. If religion is in decline, I wondered, then what are Americans worshiping now? What has become our new religion? For many professionals, the answer is work. Work provides the identity, belonging, meaning and purpose that faith traditions once did.”– Carolyn Chen, NY Times, June 4, 2022“For thousands of years, our ancestors gazed at the world around us—the people and animals, the mountains and seas, the sun, moon and stars—and saw the divine. As the 19th Psalm puts it, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork.' Even Isaac Newton saw a universe filled with purpose. In his masterwork, the Principia, he wrote: ‘This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful being.' Science advanced by leaps and bounds in the centuries following Newton, and scientists dialed back much of the God-talk. Many thinkers suggested that the universe runs like a mighty clockwork. Perhaps a creator was needed at the beginning, to set it going, but surely it now runs on its own. Einstein, who often spoke of God metaphorically, took a different tack. He rejected a personal deity, but saw a kind of pantheism—roughly, the identification of God with nature—as plausible.”– Dan Falk, Scientific American, July 27, 20211. Where do you place your highest confidence? Is it government? At one end of this spectrum, Communism believes that citizens should collectively own the means of production, distribution, and exchange which allocates products to everyone in the society. Karl Marx proposed a classless society in which everything would be shared by everyone. At the other end of the spectrum, Libertarianism says, “We, the members of the Libertarian Party, challenge the cult of the omnipotent state and defend the rights of the individual.” [LP.org) Ayn Rand famously proposed, “If government would just get out of the way, individual self-interest would create a better society!”To have confidence in government – or in the absence of government – is to believe in people. To have faith in people is Humanism. Is that where you have put your faith?2. Where do you place your highest confidence? Is it business, capitalism, free enterprise?“People create value and do good things when they have a profit motive.”“Capitalism creates jobs and provides a better lifestyle for everyone who participates. It is a virtuous cycle.”“Business people are problem solvers.”3. Where do you place your highest confidence? Is it science, medicine, technology?J.G. Ballard was enthusiastic about living in a technological society. He said, “Science and technology multiply around us. To an increasing extent they dictate the languages in which we speak and think. Either we use those languages, or we remain mute.”Napoleon Hill echoed J.G. Ballard. “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”But Thomas Schelling, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, disagreed with Napoleon Hill, saying, “The one thing a person cannot do, however brilliant they are, is write up a list of things that would never occur to them.”I like Thomas Schelling.Perhaps I am oversimplifying this, but my general feeling is that when we do a thing intuitively, we call it
