Monica Engebretson: Why Does the US Still Test on Animals for Cosmetics, Even Though 44 Other Countries Have Banned It?

“When we do polls on this, we've got all political parties high support for ending cosmetics animal testing, from Republicans, Independents, Democrats - age gaps between the boomers and the zoomers, everybody is in agreement. You know, it's one of those issues that you cannot get more unity on a single issue.” – Monica Engebretson   Monica Engebretson is the North American head of public affairs for Cruelty Free International, the leading organization working to end animal testing worldwide. They are working to end all animal testing, but for this conversation, we focused on cosmetics – for two reasons: we've done many episodes on animals used in medical research and experimentation and not enough on cosmetics and because I think many people are unaware that even we still test for cosmetics.   In the US, it's no longer required by law that cosmetic companies test on animals, yet we are still doing it. It makes no sense that we have not banned cosmetics testing. Canada has. Mexico has. In fact, 44 other countries have. I wanted Monica to explain how and why this is still happening – and the answers are complicated.    The good news is that last month, the Humane Cosmetics Act was reintroduced and if passed, it would end safety testing of cosmetic products on animals and prohibit the sale of products developed using animal testing in the United States.   Please listen and share and then, if you live in the US please make a phone call to your Senators and Representatives and politely ask them to support the Humane Cosmetics Act. Nicole has been a freelance vegan, cruelty free hair and makeup artist for over 30 years, showcasing that no animal needs to suffer for human vanity. At eight years old, Nicole decided she would be a hairdresser when she grew up. She worked part time in salons from age 14 and began her apprenticeship in year 11. Her passion for cruelty free beauty products was sparked when working in one of the first salons to use Aveda products which are cruelty free. Nicole wanted to raise awareness about cruelty free product choices, so she started volunteering with Choose Cruelty Free (CCF) in a PR and marketing role.  In 2019, Nicole became the President and then in 2021 when CCF and Cruelty Free International merged, Nicole was employed as the Australian Programmes Manager. She has witnessed a great shift towards cruelty free beauty products in the last ten years. Having an interest in organic and natural living, Nicole also founded LivingSafe.com.au - a vegan health and safety blog. To keep busy during the pandemic, Nicole began sewing face masks and donating $5 from each sale to Animals Australia. She also co-created vegan gift packs for 800 COVID nurses at the Alfred Hospital.  In the little spare time Nicole has, she enjoys fostering and caring for small animals. In this episode, Nicole highlights the difference between vegan and cruelty free, animal testing protocols and some of the celebrities she has worked with. https://www.instagram.com/nicolegroch_hairmakeup/http://www.nicolegroch.com.auhttp://www.crueltyfreeinternational.org

“Bearing witness is difficult. It does hit your emotions... I think you've got to remember, these images that you take are not yours to keep… it's your duty to put them out there or let organizations get them out there. I think that's how you cope - it’s thinking, okay these aren't going to stay in my head. These are actually going to go out into the world and are going to create change.”  - Gemunu de Silva Today’s episode is a special one. It’s with Gemunu de Silva. Gem is a filmmaker and an activist who has been investigating and documenting animal rights abuses since the eighties, before there was even such a thing as a camcorder, instead he covertly filmed inside of factory farms with a video camera and a VHS recorder attached to his back. He was the first person in the UK to film in and expose the atrocities that happen every day on industrial farms. He directed and produced programs for UK national television, including the documentary, Meathead. Watch it – it’s absolutely spectacular. He left the film and television world to set up and run the Investigations Unit at Compassion in World Farming. Gem also lead the unit’s pioneering work on long distance animal transport. In the early 2000’s, Gem went to work as the Director of Research and Investigations at Cruelty Free International, where he specialized in exposing the vile international trade of primates for research. In 2006, Gem co-founded Tracks Investigations. They have just completed their 250th investigative film project. That is an enormous number of investigations. 35 animal rights and protection organizations have benefited from their work in 57 countries. The work that Gem has done for the past three and a half decades has changed laws, minds and the world for millions of animals. For most of that time, he has laid low and stayed under the radar and has not done any media in decades. It was an absolute honor to have Gem on the show to tell his story.

What is cruelty free?Cruelty free is a label for products which don’t cause harm to animals. This kind of guarantee is designed to reassure consumers who refuse to buy products which are tested on animals. It’s most often used to describe cosmetics, but can also apply to a wide range of other household and pet products. There are many cruelty free labels around, but the main premise is generally the same: No end product or ingredient comes from or has been tested on animals. Suppliers have to prove they do not carry out animal testing and brands must agree to random testing.Cruelty-free shopping had become popular by the 1990s, but the concept was sometimes misleading and confusing. Brands were designing their own logos to certify their products as cruelty-free, according to their own definition of the term. Animal protection groups were excluded and clearly this important issue needed addressing by independent organisations.Among the many different labels seen today, two of the most strict are The Leaping Bunny Program from Cruelty Free International and Beauty Without Bunnies by PETA. Both feature extensive online databases on cruelty-free companies. Visitors can search by country, by product type and whether the company tests on animals or not. PETA require a company’s CEO to sign a statement of assurance guaranteeing they and their suppliers will never carry out any form of animal testing. If you’re wondering which cosmetics brands are cruelty-free, Lush is one of the safest options out there. The international company has had a no animal testing policy in place since it was first created. Others include Urban Decay, Too Faced and The Body Shop. Chapter 1 Hot question of the day CoverGirl cosmetics is now certified completely cruelty-free - making it the biggest beauty brand to earn the Leaping Bunny logo. When it comes to products that you purchase, do you care if whether or not they test on animals? Yes No   Chapter 2 The winners and losers of the United States midterms Guest: Reggie Cecchini Washington DC producer for Global National   Chapter 3 Conservative Leader says Tony Clement had ‘terrible lapse of judgement' after Clement resigns amidst sextortion scandal The leader of the Conservative Party, Andrew Scheer, was asked by journalists today about the security concerns presented by this, seeing as Tony Clement was one of the parliamentarians on the top-secret National Security and Intelligence Committee. Guest: Tim Powers Vice-Chairman of Summa Strategies   Chapter 4 Madeleine Baran discusses the acclaimed podcast In The Dark The award-winning podcast In the Dark, Season 2, looks at the case of Curtis Flowers, a man in Mississippi who has been tried for the same murders six times. Despite pointing out the faulty evidence and witness testimony in the podcast, Flowers still remains behind bars and on death row.  However, some good news came recently when it was announced that the Supreme Court will hear Flowers' case by June! The justices will examine if District Attorney Doug Evans had a history of racial discrimination in jury selection. In season one, In The Dark examined the rare crime of child abduction. The reporters examined the case of Jacob Wetterling, the 11 year old boy from St. Joseph, Minnesota who went missing on October 22, 1989. His abduction remained a mystery for nearly 27 years… until the team from In The Dark started examining the faulty police investigation of his disappearance. Lead In the Dark reporter Madeleine Baran is in Vancouver  to speak at the Vancouver Podcast Festival, running Nov. 8-10. Guest: Madeleine Baran Investigative reporter for APM Reports and the host and lead reporter of the podcast In the Dark.   Chapter 5 Does warning kids of ‘stranger danger' give them the right tools for interacting with people? Earlier in the show we spoke with Madeleine Baran of APM's In The Dark, and she discussed the first season of the podcast that dealt with the abduction of 11 year old Jacob Wetterling. In that series, the parents of Jacob Wetterling discussed how that case was a classic case of ‘stranger danger', but how, despite what happened to their son, parents should not parent their children based on what happened to their son. Instead, the Wetterling family encouraged parents to remember that children are often harmed by someone they know. Geoff Newiss is the Director of Action Against Abduction in the UK , and his organization feels that the idea of stranger danger has fostered an unhealthy amount of fear of strangers among children. It inspired him to devise a new safety message for children, which he thinks is more fit for purpose - not least because the majority of abductions are committed by an adult already known to the child. Guest: Geoff Newiss Director, Action Against Abduction   Chapter 6 A young man ate a garden slug on a dare, became paralyzed and died 8 years later Guest: Dr Heather Stockdale Walden Asst. Professor of Parasitology at the University of Florida   Chapter 7 Jeff Sessions is fired US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned as the country's chief law enforcement officer at the request of the President. Guest: Reggie Cecchini Washington DC producer for Global National   Chapter 8 SIMI'S LOSER AND WINNER OF THE DAY Loser NO LOSER Winner CoverGirl cosmetics is now certified completely cruelty-free - making it the biggest beauty brand to earn the Leaping Bunny logo - To be awarded the globally-recognised Leaping Bunny certification, presented by Cruelty Free International, a brand must eliminate animal testing from every level of product production - including in all ingredients and suppliers. “No other certification program has the rigour that seeks to completely eliminate animal testing from a brand's supply chain - it certifies that no CoverGirl products or ingredients are tested on animals, either by CoverGirl or its suppliers,” the press release states.  In addition to passing the “rigorous process,” the drugstore beauty brand will also have to undergo ongoing checks to ensure it is maintaining cruelty-free production.
