Cats won’t be banned in Scotland, the government confirms

The Scottish government wants everyone to know it does not plan to ban cats. First Minister John Swinney was forced to issue the statement after a report by independent experts branded felines a threat to Scotland's wildlife and suggested "containment" measures be considered to reduce the damage. The Scottish Animal Welfare Commission said cats kill at least 700 million birds and other animals each year in the U.K. It advised the government to consider a range of measures, including keeping domestic cats indoors or on leashes, to protect endangered species such as Scottish wildcats. The report said "cat containment" measures could also include "restrictions on introducing cats to households in vulnerable areas"—interpreted by some as effectively a ban. The Scottish government said it would "fully consider" the recommendations. In a nation of animal lovers, the suggestions spawned alarming headlines. The Daily Mail reported: "Fury as households in Scotland could be banned from getting a pet cat." The Scottish Daily Express branded the idea a "madcap scheme." Swinney, who heads Scotland's semi-autonomous Edinburgh-based government, spoke to journalists to defend the administration's pro-feline credentials. "Let me just clear this up today," he said. "The government's not going to be banning cats or restricting cats. We've no intention of doing so and we will not be doing it." Cats Protection, the U.K.'s biggest cat charity, gave the idea of draconian containment measures short shrift, saying, "Pragmatic solutions like keeping cats indoors at dawn and dusk can balance the needs of domestic cats and wild animals." "Scotland is a nation of cat lovers," said Alice Palombo, the charity's advocacy and government relations officer for Scotland, with almost a quarter of households owning a feline pet. "Cats are great pets for all sorts of reasons, whether it's providing companionship for elderly people or those living alone, comfort for people with health conditions or helping children learn important lessons in caring for others," she said. "We believe everyone who is able to care for a cat should be able to enjoy these benefits." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Slow-Burn Leadership: Why The Best Change Takes Time We chat with John May, CEO of Cats Protection Leading a charity with 1,000 staff and 10,000 volunteers requires a delicate balance of co-creation, patience, and cultural transformation. In this episode, John May shares insights from his role as Chief Executive of Cats Protection, discussing how to create lasting organisational change and foster meaningful partnerships between staff and volunteers. At the heart of our conversation with John are powerful insights about creating sustainable change in large organisations: The evolution of voluntary organisations and the need for new partnership models between paid staff and volunteers Why co-creation, rather than compromise, leads to better decision-making The importance of taking time to build lasting change rather than seeking quick wins How to embed values deeply into organisational culture rather than letting them become mere PowerPoint slides Supporting pet owners through the cost-of-living crisis while expanding reach from 157,000 to millions of cats John shares a refreshing perspective on leadership, emphasising that sustainable change often takes longer than we initially think and requires patience, gentle persuasion rather than imposition, and genuine co-creation with all stakeholders. Digital transformation isn't just about tech - it's about knowing when to build specialist teams, when to distribute expertise, and crucially, when your organisation is ready for change. They're traditionally thought of as aloof, disloyal and selfish. But if Willow's story is to be believed, cats can be just as emotionally attuned as dogs. “She actually did save my life, because I wouldn't be here otherwise. I wouldn't have been here if it weren't for her,” says Amanda Jameson, who suffers from diabetes and owns Willow along with her partner Ray. Amanda suffers from diabetes and Crohn's Disease. One night she fell unconscious in bed, and Ray, who was downstairs watching TV, was completely unaware, until Willow stepped in and began to bite Ray's hands. "I got up, as you do, walked to the door, and as I got to the door, Willow ran about halfway up, three-quarters, and she kept looking back at me and at the stairs, so I followed her, when I turned the corner she ran in, jumped on the bed, and I saw Amanda was slumped over. And she was unresponsive," demonstrates Ray, reconstructing his journey up the stairs. Considering cats are not often traditionally thought of as altruistic, how unusual is Willow's behavior? "So we do often see a change in their behavior, particularly when they're after something. So it's not uncommon that cats will escalate that kind of behavior into biting. And it is something that just needs to be managed in the house. But in this case, it did really help to save a mother's life, which is amazing," says Sammie Ravenscroft a Regional Behaviour Officer at Cats Protection. Adopted as a stray cat, if she wins the prize, Willow may turn out to be an orphan who made it good. "I love her more than ever, I can't thank her enough, and she is the world to me," says Amanda. How do you manage your finances? Wendy Thomson, owner of My Three Cats, spent over 20 years as an accountant. She credits her background with her ability to get her business off the ground quickly during Covid. She joins the show today to share her experience of growing quickly, why we need to understand our finances, and why she decided to start a cat only business. She also shares what she looks for in a good hire for business. Topics on this episode: * Why finances are important * Understanding your income * Why go cat only? * Hiring strong team members Main take away? Pursue areas where you have experience in, so you could be more confident in your ability. About our guest: Wendy has lived with cats since childhood and has never been without one or more in her family. At age 13 she volunteered for the Cats Protection in Warrington where she cleaned out pens and helped to feed abandoned kittens. She adopted two cats of her own - Clarence and Alabama - in 1996 and has since owned cats of every temperament and age, from tiny kittens to old ladies, and loved each one with the same passion and care. During one particular two-week holiday she put her cats in a local cattery. In those pre-mobile/pre-internet days Wendy had no contact with the cattery during this time and spent much of her holiday worrying about them and missing them. The cattery was lovely and cared well for them, but on her return her cats were thin, anxious and timid due to the stress of being away from home. They hadn't eaten very much and had been withdrawn during their stay. Once home it took them several days to trust Wendy enough to settle back into their routine. She couldn't bear to move them out of their home again and from then on relied on friends and family to feed the cats at home when she went away. Wendy began cat-sitting in 2016 and her service soon became incredibly popular. Each new client said that their cats were so much happier staying at home, and less stressed and anxious when they went away. Wendy's friendly, caring nature and her life-long passion for cats continued to attract cat-owners following recommendations from others and the business grew from strength to strength. By 2019 Wendy was at full capacity and still the bookings were coming in. Determined to look after as many cats as possible she decided to recruit a small team to help offer cat-sitting services to a larger area. Wendy now works with her amazing team to care for cats across the whole of Warrington. All team members have been carefully chosen and are all cat-owners themselves, fully insured and vetted, with an abundance of feline experience. She is passionate about both the physical and emotional care of all cats and understands their need for routine and independence. My Three Cats has an exceptional 5 Star record and all the feedback they receive tells them that the cats they care for are much happier staying at home when their owners are away. Owners return to find their cats calm, relaxed and happy (They often wonder if they've even missed them!) Wendy lives with her partner and children in Thelwall, with their cats Coco, Billie, Ronnie & Reggie. In this episode, Sandra and Lucinda, two vets working in the Cats Protection Veterinary department, explore the topic of kitten neutering. With thousands of unwanted cats in the UK, one of Cats Protection's key aims is to champion the neutering message. Neutering (collective term for both spaying and castrating) is widely recognised as the only effective way to reduce the number of unwanted cats being born in the UK. Cats are effective breeders, so making sure they are neutered is particularly important. At Cats Protection we recommend that kittens are neutered at four months of age or younger to prevent unplanned and unwanted litters that so often end up in shelters across the UK. This time on Alfred, the podcast for Shaftesbury, The Vale and Chase areas of North Dorset and West Wiltshire: Alfred enjoys fire eating, dragons and handmade lanterns at Shaftesbury’s Snowdrop Season finale. We chat to some of the youngsters who were making lanterns before Saturday’s procession and talk with their instructor, local artist Des Alner. (00:30) Bunting will make Shaftesbury look even better this year. A ‘four figure sum’ is being spent on colourful flags and pendants, which will be draped along the side of the High Street and perhaps Bell Street. Chamber of Commerce Chairman David Perry explains why they are funding these decorations. And Salisbury Street-based bunting maker Georgie Faulkner-Bryant tells us that the bunting will be sustainable. (09:08) There’s cash on offer if you can come up with a campaign to enhance Shaftesbury’s wildlife or green spaces. Cllr Andy Perkins talks about his ‘Wild About Shaftesbury’ competition that will encourage the public to vote for the project they believe will make the biggest difference. Andy says that the recent movement to buy ‘The Wilderness’ and an Enmore Green pond inspired him. (13:40) Shaftesbury’s new charity shop promises shelves and rails filled with designer clothes. Alfred talks with Tracy Stanley of Julia’s House about the Dorset hospice charity’s plans for the town centre store that we had expected Cats Protection to occupy. (19:39) One of the world’s greatest flamenco guitarists is returning to Shaftesbury. Juan Martin tells Alfred why he enjoys performing at our Arts Centre. And he tells us what to say if we enjoy his concert. (24:54)
