Andrew Lewin delves into the controversial topic of shark nets in Australia. While these nets are intended to protect beachgoers from certain shark species, they also harm non-targeted marine animals like sea turtles and dolphins. The discussion revolves around the effectiveness of shark nets in ensuring beach safety and the impact on ocean species. Join the conversation to learn more about the balance between human safety and marine conservation efforts. These nets, designed to prevent shark attacks on beachgoers, have caused significant harm to marine animals, including sea turtles, dolphins, and smaller sharks. The transcript reveals that more than half of the non-target species caught in the nets over the past eight months were killed, with 134 dead animals recorded. Among the casualties were critically endangered gray nurse sharks, endangered leatherback sea turtles, and loggerhead turtles. Data from the Humane Society International showed that out of all non-target animals caught, only 36% were released alive. Releasing non-target species from the nets is challenging, as animals like sea turtles and dolphins require air to breathe and may drown if not promptly freed. The issue of bycatch is worsened by the fact that the shark nets have a 12 to 1 ratio of non-target to target species caught, indicating a disproportionate impact on non-target marine animals. The harm inflicted on these non-target species by shark nets raises concerns about the effectiveness and ethical implications of using such methods for shark control. The podcast episode stresses the need to reassess shark net programs in Australia and explore alternative technologies to mitigate negative impacts on marine biodiversity. The discussion underscores the importance of considering the broader ecological consequences of shark netting practices and the urgency of finding more sustainable and species-specific solutions to protect both beachgoers and marine wildlife. A key point highlighted in the podcast episode is the lack of scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of shark nets in reducing the risk of shark bites. Despite the installation of shark nets in Australia to prevent certain shark species from entering popular beaches, there is controversy surrounding their actual efficacy. The host mentions that shark scientists, based on their research and discussions within the shark science community, have not come across any scientific studies that definitively prove the effectiveness of shark nets in reducing the risk of shark bites. This lack of concrete evidence raises questions about the justification for using shark nets as a method of protecting beachgoers. Furthermore, a recent study mentioned in the episode revealed concerning statistics regarding the impact of shark nets on marine animals. More than 90% of the marine animals caught in shark nets off New South Wales beaches were non-target species, including sea turtles, dolphins, and smaller sharks. The data showed that a significant number of these non-target animals were killed as a result of being caught in the nets. The high percentage of non-target species caught and killed in shark nets raises ethical and conservation concerns. The bycatch of endangered species such as gray nurse sharks, leatherback sea turtles, and loggerhead turtles underscores the detrimental effects of shark nets on marine biodiversity. The episode also discusses the internal division within the Australian government regarding the shark net program. While some departments acknowledge the unavoidable nature of bycatch in shark nets, others, including the Environment Minister, have privately expressed support for ending the use of shark nets. This internal debate reflects the growing recognition of the negative consequences associated with shark nets. In conclusion, the lack of scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of shark nets, coupled with the significant impact on non-target marine species, highlights the need for a reevaluation of shark net programs. The episode emphasizes the importance of considering alternative technologies and conservation strategies to protect both beachgoers and marine biodiversity effectively. The Minister of Environment in Australia, Penny Sharp, has privately voiced her support for ending the use of shark nets, a controversial issue that has sparked debate among advocates and government officials. Despite her private stance on the matter, Sharp has not publicly expressed her support for removing the shark nets, leading to frustration among conservationists and environmental groups. The debate surrounding the effectiveness and ethical implications of shark nets has been ongoing, with concerns raised about the high number of non-target species, such as sea turtles, dolphins, and smaller sharks, that are caught and killed in the nets. A recent study revealed that more than 90% of marine animals caught in shark nets off New South Wales beaches were non-target species, including critically endangered gray nurse sharks and endangered sea turtles. Advocates like Andre Burrell from the Envoy Foundation have called for more transparency and public engagement on the issue, emphasizing the need for government officials, including the Minister of Environment, to take a more active role in addressing the concerns surrounding shark nets. Burrell highlighted the importance of public advocacy and government leadership in moving towards alternative technologies or strategies to protect beachgoers while minimizing harm to marine wildlife. The Minister of Environment's private support for ending the use of shark nets underscores the complexity of the issue and the need for a comprehensive review of current shark management practices. By openly addressing the concerns raised by conservationists and considering alternative approaches to shark mitigation, the Australian government can work towards a more sustainable and effective solution that balances the safety of beachgoers with the protection of marine biodiversity.

**This episode first aired in October 2021. Listen to an update from Nina at 26: 27 about the next round of EWCL open to applicants now.The field of wildlife conservation has some of the most passionate and determined people in the world. Building a career protecting animals requires professionals in this field to have a diverse and complex toolbox of skills and knowledge. However, as happens in many other professions, academic training is only the beginning of the learning journey and often does not fully cover the wide range of challenges and opportunities that individuals will face in the real world. Recognizing this gap, Nina Fascione (Exec. Director, International Rhino Foundation) and Jeffrey Flocken (President, Humane Society International), created the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders (EWCL) program in 2005 to afford early-career wildlife conservationists an opportunity to become better-rounded professionals. Through EWCL, participants in the program are equipped with a gamut of skills, techniques, and approaches to wildlife conservation, and are connected to an extensive network of peers worldwide. We talk about the program, its evolution, and the future, diving into some very amusing stories of how EWCL came to be and continues to change people's lives straight from the start.HighlightsThe borderline nutty dedication to getting EWCL off the ground. ;)What kinds of impacts has EWCL had throughout the world? How can someone become a part of this fantastic network? What YOU Can DoIf you're an early career conservationist, apply to join the next EWCL class! World Snake Day: Why is India still the snake bite capital of the world?

July 16 is World Snake Day. When you have a day dedicated to something, it typically denotes a call to care for, or draw attention to, the welfare of the entity to which the day is dedicated. That's how it is with Father's Day, Mother's Day and so on. But with World Snake Day, things get a little complicated, as the first thing that comes to mind when you mention ‘snakes' is the fear of snake bites, and the fact that India is the snake-bite capital of the world. So we tend to forget that snakes are also part of wildlife, and discussions about the importance conserving snake species tends to take a backseat. It is estimated that out of the 78,000-100,000 snake bites that occur every year globally, the vast majority – about 64,000 – happen in India. The snake bite is a public health issue in India. At the same time, it is a marker of high human-snake conflict. In this episode, on the eve of World Snake Day, we take a closer look at the human-snake conflict, what has India been doing to bring down snake-bite fatalities, what role snakes play in India's bio-diversity and why they need to be protected. We speak with Sumanth Bindumadhav, Director of the Wildlife Department at Humane Society International, India.

Power loss affects farming. It's a topic the public who buy meat don't generally consider. The huge power needed for factory farms also reduces the availability for private homes. Humane Society International South Africa raises the concern of the farm animals suffering in slaughterhouses when the power goes off and the efforts to address these issues reduce animal suffering by training chefs in plant based sustainable cuisine.

Only by raising our voices and making them heard can we get the message out there. When most people think of sustainability, they think of packaging. Packaging is only the tip of the iceberg. We need to ensure that other factors are added, including living wages to employees and waste management. Sometimes the fear of failing can hold us back from our dreams. In November 2021, the United Kingdom recognized crabs, lobsters, octopus and other decapod crustaceans and cephalopod invertebrates as sentient beings. The animals were added to the UK's new Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, which will protect them for the first time when the bill becomes law in early 2022. Expanding our awareness to more species is cause for hope and celebration, says Claire Bass, executive director of Humane Society International – UK. The Humane Society and other animal welfare organizations have worked on the sentience bill with the British government for several years. In this episode, Claire, who has rescued animals since childhood, explains what the new sentience law means. It's 2021! You'd be forgiven for thinking Animal Cosmetic testing is a thing of the past. Many countries around the world (including Australia) have enacted policies and legislation that bans cosmetic testing on animals- but unfortunately, despite these laws, you may be surprised to learn that some of your favourite, well-known and supposedly reputable brands are still partaking in this painful and inhumane practice.  This year, Humane Society International released a stop motion, animated short film that stars familiar names like Taika Waititi, Ricky Gervais and Zac Efron. The film's called ‘Save Ralph' and it tells the story of the life of a rabbit named Ralph (voiced by Taiki Waititi) who is used, battered and bruised at his ‘job' as an animal tester for cosmetics. This 4 minute film highlights the very sad reality forced on to thousands of animals each year, still to this day.  In this episode, we sit down with Nicola from Humane Society International to uncover the truth behind cosmetic testing of animals, and to find out how we as consumers can do our part in helping see an end to this cruel practice.  About Nicola:  Nicola Beynon is the Head of Campaigns for the Australian Office of Humane Society International. Nicola has worked in animal protection for over 25 years, championing stronger laws and policies for animals in Australia and the international treaties . Additional Resources:

In this episode, we explore the theme of wildlife conservation and the tensions that exist between how people in the global north tend to view these issues versus how they are perceived and experienced by the rural people who live alongside wild animals in countries like Botswana in southern Africa. To discuss these themes, we speak with Joseph E. Mbaiwa, Professor of Tourism Studies at University of Botswana, and Chris Brown, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University about Botswana's 2014 hunting ban on African elephants. Through this example, we explore the political and eco-colonial contexts that influenced both the institution of the ban, as well as the ban's impact on communities within Botswana.

Last year Japan announced it would leave the IWC. Japan's member of the IWC failed to convince the other members to support a return to “sustainable” commercial whaling. “Japan is out of step with the international community", Sam Annesley, director at Greenpeace Japan, said in a statement. Japan's whaling ships have a permit to catch totally 227 whales this year in Japanese waters. The targets are like minke whales, Bryde's whales and sei whales. Last year, until the last March, Japan's whalers killed 333 minke whales during their final “research” expedition to the Antarctic sea. But, In previous years, Japan's whalers killed almost 1,000 a year. Last Monday in Kushiro, Hokkaido, five ships left the port for hunting the whales. At the same day, in shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, three whaling boats left the port. Nicola Beynon of Humane Society International said "This is a sad day for whale protection globally," accusing Japan's act as a "new and shocking era of pirate whaling". Two big anti-whaling country is Australia and England. Somehow, both of them is set no comment. British former PM Teresa May has no power to bring up the criticism to Japan. But, there is a rumour, at the G20 summit last month, Abe convinced AUS PM Scott Morrison to not speak out about whaling. Japan's fisheries agency invest the biggest budget on whaling. They explains the whales meat is the important resource for its citizens. And secondly they say Japanese has the unique culture of eating the meat. Japanese used to eat whale's meat “broadly”. There is a subtle meaning between the sentences. I admit ancient Japanese was catching a whale as part of a ceremony. But, people started eating the meat broadly after the WWⅡ. There is a huge time gap between the lines. The supplying of whale meat was higher than the any other meats at a points after the war. Japan wasn't set up for the other meat products like beef, pork and chicken. Until the imports of the other meat products became stable, the supplying was dependent on the whale meat. The head of the fisheries agency Shigeto Hase commented that he believes the young generation heritage the culture and he also believes the taste is good. I studied the Japanese history in the high school but I've never heard the ceremonial culture is important or unique in the history book. In fact, the other country has similar circumstances like Indonesian or coastal Indian. I personally never liked whale meat. It's simply no good. There is so many delicious seafood around our nation. It's so weird and sad. Whale is so smart and adorable. It's so stupid the fisheries agency treat the whale as fish. So embarrassing. I don't think it's gonna be successful. I introduce one comment from the Guardian. Patrick Ramage, the director of marine conservation at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said the resumption of commercial whaling “will not magically increase market demand”. “The palates of the Japanese people have moved on,” Ramage said. “They have lost their yen for whale meat, even as their government has spent billions in taxpayer yen trying to prop up this economic loser. What we are seeing is the beginning of the end of Japanese whaling.” I guess it is true that less news media or mass media accuse Japan compared to the 5 years ago. Japan “prouldly” announced this withdrawal. To me it looks like Japan was abandoned from the IWC, the rest of the country.
