We've been reporting over the last couple of weeks about a £358m underspend over the last three years from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' £2.4 billion agriculture annual budget for England. Farmers are furious at the scale of this underspend and there are concerns that the money will be lost for good in cuts in this autumn's government spending review. Now a former Defra director says it's critical that this money isn't lost from the farming budget. Henry Dimbleby was Defra's lead non-executive board member for five years up until spring last year when he resigned over what he said was the then Government's failure to tackle obesity, something he'd highlighted as a priority in his independent National Food Strategy, commissioned by the Government. An animal welfare charity says it's filmed tonnes of dead and dying salmon being removed from a fish farm just hours before Members of the Scottish Parliament visited the site for a fact finding mission. Holyrood's Rural Affairs committee visited Dunstaffnage fish farm near Oban on Monday as part of their inquiry into whether the industry's made progress in tackling significant environmental concerns. The campaign group Animal Equality has accused the industry of trying to cover up the fish deaths, but Scottish Sea Farms who own the farm, says the workers were carrying out routine clearance of the pens. The need for clean energy has led to a large increase in offshore wind farms and electricity generated in them has to be brought inland. That means hundreds of miles of underground cabling is being channelled through the countryside with some farmers having little choice about whether they go across their land. Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AEBr 2024 Summit Retrospective, published by Leo Arruda on August 7, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. [Versão em português abaixo] This retrospective provides an overview of the AEBr 2024 Summit, highlighting successes and areas for improvement. We welcome your feedback and comments to help enhance future EA Brazil conferences. Bottom Line Up Front The AEBr Summit 2024 was a success. It had 220 attendees who felt welcome and satisfied, generating around 850 connections at a cost of $45.45 per attendee. Date: June 29, 2024 Venue: INOVA.USP, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. The first Brazilian national EA conference ~220 people attended (62% were new to EA) 36 speakers 24 sessions including talks, panels, meetups, and office hours 5 organizations represented at the Career fair Feedback survey results: A 9,1/10 likelihood to recommend score An average of 6,1 new connections per person Photos and video! The AEBr Summit Overview The AEBr Summit took place on June 29, 2024, at the University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. It was EA Brazil's first national meeting, with contributions from numerous experts and organizations aligned with Effective Altruism, primarily from the animal cause sector ( Sinergia animal, Animal Equality, Forum Animal, Mercy for Animals, Sea Shepherd and Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira), as well as health and development organizations like Doebem, Associação Brasileira de Psicólogos Baseadas em Evidências and Impulso Gov. The primary goal was to expand and strengthen the Brazilian EA community by inviting both newcomers and experienced members to join together for a day of inspiring talks, workshops, and networking. The event was funded by the Centre for Effective Altruism and supported by the Innovation Center of the University of São Paulo ( INOVA USP). Delicious vegan meals were provided by Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira (SVB), contributing to the event's success. The expectation was to bring together 200 people, so it was an accomplishment to register 255 applicants, with 220 attending, among speakers and volunteers. Highlights The event featured 220 attendees 36 speakers 40 very dedicated volunteers 26 sessions ( event program in Portuguese) 13 talks on the main causes of Effective Altruism. 7 workshops. 4 Q&A sessions with experts. 2 meet ups. 5 organizations represented at the Career fair Event photos and video (many thanks to Ivan Martucci for the professional editing). Based on the feedback responses from 60 attendees (27%): Average participant satisfaction: 9.2 out of 10 in Likelihood to Recommend. This is higher than the average for EA Global and EAGx. An average of 6,1 new connections per person. This is lower than most EAG and EAGx events, but the event lasted only one day. 46% of connections were considered potentially 'impactful' by the attendees (Note: assessing the impact of connections can be subjective). Team The AEBr Summit core team comprised Juana Maria, Leo Arruda, Ivan Martucci, and Adriana Arauzo. They were supported by Ollie Base and Arthur Malone from the CEA events team. The core team worked remotely except for some site visits. Two members of the team worked together in person in São Paulo during the final week. While remote work was effective, in-person collaboration proved significantly easier, especially since some members didn't know each other well beforehand. In hindsight, it would have been beneficial for the team to meet and work in person earlier, ideally two weeks in advance of the summit rather than just one. There were 40 volunteers divided into various roles: communication, logistics, food and catering, room supervision, speaker liaison, admissions, reception, and community health. Most volunteers were already engaged in the community, but a few were completely new. Special thanks to Ivan...

Those investigations recently fed into a BBC Panorama documentary that aired in February, which exposed the UK's dairy industry. The documentary sparked considerable debate in the UK thanks in large part to the damning undercover footage, gathered by Animal Equality. Not only did it expose examples of cruel and illegal behaviour, but it also showcased the inherently cruel farming practices that are considered normal, industry-standard behaviour.   BBC Panorama documentary - "A Cow's Life: The True Cost of Milk?" welcome to the nonlinear library, where we use text-to-speech software to convert the best writing from the rationalist and ea communities into audio. this is: Big List of Cause Candidates, published by NunoSempere on the effective altruism forum. Many thanks to Ozzie Gooen for suggesting this project, to Marta Krzeminska for editing help and to Michael Aird and others for various comments. In the last few years, there have been many dozens of posts about potential new EA cause areas, causes and interventions. Searching for new causes seems like a worthy endeavour, but on their own, the submissions can be quite scattered and chaotic. Collecting and categorizing these cause candidates seemed like a clear next step. We —Ozzie Gooen of the Quantified Uncertainty Research Institute and I— might later be interested in expanding this work and eventually using it for forecasting —e.g., predicting whether each candidate would still seem promising after much more rigorous research. At the same time, we feel like this list itself can be useful already. Further, as I kept adding more and more cause candidates, I realized that aiming for completeness was a fool's errand, or at least too big a task for an individual working alone. Below is my current list with a simple categorization, as well as an occasional short summary which paraphrases or quotes key points from the posts linked. See the last appendix for some notes on nomenclature. If there are any entries I missed (and there will be), please say so in the comments and I'll add them. I also created the "Cause Candidates" tag on the EA Forum and tagged all of the listed posts there. They are also available in a Google Sheet. Animal Welfare and Suffering Pointer: This cause has its various EA Forum tags (farmed animal welfare, wild animal welfare, meat alternatives), where more cause candidates can be found. Brian Tomasik et al.'s Essays on Reducing Suffering are also a gift that keeps on giving for this and other cause areas. 1.Wild Animal Suffering Caused by Fires Related categories: Politics: System change, targeted change, policy reform. Wild animal suffering caused by fires and ways to prevent it: a noncontroversial intervention (@Animal_Ethics) An Animal Ethics grantee designed a protocol aimed at helping animals during and after fires. The protocol contains specific suggestions, but the path to turning these into policy is unclear. 2. Invertebrate Welfare Invertebrate Welfare Cause Profile (@Jason Schukraft) The scale of direct human impact on invertebrates (@abrahamrowe) "In this post, we apply the standard importance-neglectedness-tractability framework to invertebrate welfare to determine, as best we can, whether this is a cause area that is worth prioritizing. We conclude that it is." Note: See also Brian Tomasik's Do Bugs Feel Pain. 3. Humane Pesticides Humane Pesticides as the Most Marginally Effective Cause (@JeffMJordan) Improving Pest Management for Wild Insect Welfare (@Wild_Animal_Initiative) The post argues that insects experience consciousness, and that there are a lot of them, so we should give them significant moral weight (comments contain a discussion on this point). The post goes on to recommend subsidization of less-painful pesticides, an idea initially suggested by Brian Tomasik, who "estimates this intervention to cost one dollar per 250,000 less-painful deaths." The second post goes into much more depth. 4. Diet Change Is promoting veganism neglected and if so what is the most effective way of promoting it? (@samuel072) Animal Equality showed that advocating for diet change works. But is it cost-effective? (@Peter_Hurford, @Marcus_A_Davis) Cost-effectiveness analysis of a program promoting a vegan diet (@nadavb, @sella, @GidonKadosh, @MorHanany) Measuring Change in Diet for Animal Advocacy (@Jacob_Peacock) The first post is a stub. The Supreme Court of the United States has rejected the meat industry's challenge to a California law prohibiting cruel confinement of farmed animals! This is a HUGE victory for animal rights and the animals themselves! On June 28, 2021, the Supreme Court of the United States rejected the North American Meat Institute's (NAMI) challenge to California's Proposition 12. Proposition 12 is due to go into effect on January 1, 2022. It strengthens existing California law to ban the intensive confinement of egg-laying chickens, mother pigs and calves used in the veal industry. The law also prohibits the sale in California of eggs, pork and veal from facilities that confine animals in cruel cages. Voters adopted Proposition 12 in 2018. When NAMI sued California in an attempt to stop the state from implementing Proposition 12, Animal Outlook voluntarily intervened in the lawsuit on behalf of the State of California to defend Proposition 12 and protect the millions of hens, pigs and calves used to produce meat and eggs sold in California. Animal Outlook was joined by Animal Equality, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Compassion in World Farming, Farm Sanctuary, the Humane League and the Humane Society of the United States. In rejecting NAMI's challenge, the Supreme Court upheld an appellate court's denial of NAMI's claim that Proposition 12 violated the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court's decision affirms the right of states to pass laws protecting animals, public health and safety. While an appeal in a second lawsuit against Proposition 12, brought by the National Pork Producers Council, still looms, the Supreme Court's decision against NAMI is a massive victory for animals.

Ep. 7 of Tales from Quarantine is with Matteo Cupi, executive director of Animal Equality Italy. We talked about his personal story and his mission to end factory farming. Matteo and Animal Equality have launched an international campaign to permanently ban all wet markets worldwide. For animals, wet markets are hell on Earth. For humans, they are incubators of novel diseases and a threat to our health and safety. SARS - a coronavirus - started in a wet market in China in 2003 and - scientists said - one of Wuhan's wet markets is the possible origin of COVID-19.

I see the pledge program a lot as a means to an end to get institutional change to happen… We're spending about 40% of our staff time and resources on corporate engagement and institutional change. While the marketing side of things is also there to sort of make the corporate side happen… [Veganuary's place in the movement is] using the idea of the pledge program and driving a corporate change with it.- Ria RehbergVeganuary focuses primarily on its online vegan pledge program. But how can this online commitment be harnessed to encourage wider societal change? Can this strategy play a role in bringing change in neglected areas and underrepresented demographics?Ria Rehberg became executive director of Veganuary in 2019, having previously worked in leadership roles for Animal Equality and the Million Dollar Vegan campaign.Topics discussed in the episode:How Veganuary's pledge program fits into the wider movement to drive behavior change (1:54)The numbers and research behind Veganuary's claims to have caused a reduction of more than 1.2 million kilograms of animal products purchased between January and June 2019 (7:15)Variations in marketing that affect the cost-effectiveness of Veganuary's online pledge program (15:05)How Veganuary encourages companies to improve their provision of animal-free foods and decrease their provision of conventional animal products (16:36)How Veganuary works with other animal advocacy organizations (24:39)The extent to which nonprofits should specialize in a single intervention and how Veganuary's pledge program relates to their corporate outreach work (28:24)Whether the farmed animal movement should prioritize tactics focused on influencing institutions or individuals (31:13)Whether the farmed animal movement should emphasize reducetarianism or veganism (36:42)The importance of marketing experience for Veganuary's employees (40:59)Marketing experience, the relative use of for-profit and nonprofit career experience, and how to develop expertise without experience (42:10)Developing leadership skills (45:53)Funding constraints and how these issues compare to other bottlenecks on Veganuary's impact (1:01:18)Veganuary's work outside the UK, prioritizing between different locations to expand into, and the challenges of its expansion into different countries (1:19:52)Short-term cost-efficiency vs. diversity in outreach and social marketing (1:38:26)Resources discussed in the episode:Resources by or about Veganuary:Veganuary's impact assessment for the 2019 pledge programMarket research suggesting 10 times as many people taking part in Veganuary as signing up through the websiteKantar research conducted with Veganuary (forthcoming)Veganuary's business toolkit (available upon request)“#Veganuary: UK overtakes Germany as world's leader for vegan food launches”Vegan Cycle IndiaSI's resources:Foundational questions summariesLessons for Consumer Behavior Interventions from the Health Behavior Interventions Literature (forthcoming)Other resources:Support the show (https://www.sentienceinstitute.org/donate)

This week The ChickPeeps take a more serious turn as we investigate the issue with dairy and exactly why vegans don't consume it. Many non-vegans argue that taking its milk doesn't hurt cows and that in fact milking actually relieves the cow. We explore the reasons why this is a myth, and discuss the results of quitting dairy products entirely. We also interview two of the founders of Animal Equality, and creators of the groundbreaking iAnimal project, Jose Valle and Sharon Nunez, who recount in vivid detail the experiences they've had on dairy farms and the typical life of a dairy cow. Also on this episode... Is there more suffering in a glass of milk? 'You're not lactose intolerant, you're just not a baby cow.' The gifts/health benefits cows give you when you stop eating their secretions. Evy expresses her frustration with evolution to provide cows with adequate weaponry - why no fanged cows yet? Momo suggests carving holes in animals is probably not to their liking. Why do people think calcium is synonymous with dairy milk?  The Chickpeeps discuss their favourite dairy substitutes. Is dairy a feminist issue? How Animal Equality was founded. Jose shares how the iAnimal project was conceived. Tylor: 'These Animals are children who are then forced to have children who are then taken away just so we can drink their milk.' Is there an ethical way to consume dairy? The future for dairy farms.
