Alli Webb transitioned from working in hair salons to creating a mobile blowout service, catering to clients' homes for $40 per session. She connected with potential clients through a Yahoo group, generating significant demand. To expand her operations, she and her brother, Michael Landau, secured $300,000 in funding to open the first Drybar salon in Brentwood, California, in 2010. The salon focused exclusively on wash and blowout services, quickly surpassing initial operational goals. Within a decade, Drybar grew to over 150 locations across the U.S. In 2020, Webb sold the brand's product line for $255 million and in 2021, WellBiz Brands acquired the franchise rights to Drybar salons. If you've gone to get a blowout, you most likely stepped foot into a Drybar - founded by this week's guest, Alli Webb. Drybar was a revolutionary concept that transformed the hair care industry by focusing exclusively on blowouts. What started as a single mobile service grew into a national brand with over 150 locations and a line of professional hair products. So why did Alli decide to sell the company? And how did selling the company lead to an identity crisis? On this episode of She Pivots, Alli answers that question plus: how Drybar started as a mobile business so she could “get out of the house for a couple hours”; how her professional life changed as a result of her son's mental health struggles and loss of her mother to cancer; dealing with depression; taking her power back by writing her bestselling book, “The Messy Truth”; and candid insights into the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.   She Pivots was created by host Emily Tisch Sussman to highlight women, their stories, and how their pivot became their success. In this podcast episode, I share an eye-opening experience from an exclusive entrepreneurial event in Los Angeles. The event featured remarkable individuals, including Alli Webb, who sold her company, Drybar, for a staggering $250 million. The core lesson revolves around the inner game of entrepreneurship, emphasizing authenticity and vulnerability. The successful entrepreneurs at the event didn't shy away from sharing their challenges, providing valuable insights into overcoming adversity and fortifying the entrepreneurial mindset. We explore the "Map of Consciousness" by David R. Hawkins, underlining the importance of transitioning from a survival paradigm to a courageous state. I introduce the Four H's Pyramid framework, urging listeners to start with the heart and head before delving into skills, habits, and strategies. As I wrap up, I encourage listeners to reflect on their entrepreneurial archetype, embrace authenticity, and recognize the transformative power of their messages in the entrepreneurial landscape.   “If you have to post something, and you're scared to post it, or maybe you have to... you should post that. Because those are the things that you're really sharing something that you're a little bit scared to share.” Key notes:   The common trait among successful entrepreneurs is authenticity. Posting content you're hesitant about can resonate more with your audience. Understanding the "heart, head, hands, and how" pyramid for personal development. One of the defining brands of the 2010s was Drybar. The popular chain of blow dry salons helped define the so-called experience economy, leading to numerous competitors and copycats. But of course, to go from a single location to a national chain is difficult in all kinds of ways, both personally and operationally. On this episode, we speak with Drybar founder Alli Webb on the experience, which she talks about in her new book titled 'The Messy Truth: How I Sold My Business for Millions but Almost Lost Myself'. We also discuss the truth about raising money, her new chain of massage studios, how to select the perfect retail location, and how operating a business is different in 2023 than it was 10 years ago. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I talk to DryBar founder and best-selling author Alli Webb about finding joy when your life is a mess, how to find yourself again after a crisis, dealing with imposter syndrome, and so much more! When Drybar and its world-famous blowouts took off seemingly overnight, she found herself surrounded by celebrity clients like Zooey Deschanel, Jennifer Garner, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Julia Roberts. She was named to multiple prestigious business lists, published a New York Times bestselling book—all before she turned forty. But it wasn't until her marriage fell apart, her teenage son entered rehab unexpectedly, and she no longer found meaning in the wildly successful business she had built that Alli realized she was spiraling into deep depression. She'd lost sight of what made her happy in favor of an aimless push to succeed above all. Something had to give. Piece by piece, Alli began to reinvent her personal and professional life with the goal of accepting her messy truth. She learned how to embrace the honest in lieu of the perfect and realized that most of life happens somewhere in the middle, between the laughter and the tears. In My Heart with Heather Thomson

You probably know Alli best as the co-founder of Drybar, the whimsical salon that made blowouts as accessible and budget-friendly as your favorite skinny vanilla latte. After scaling to 150+ locations and launching a product line, Alli and her partners sold Drybar to focus attention on new ventures. She has since co-founded Squeeze—a way better massage experience, Okay Humans—the future of face-to-face talk therapy, and Beckett & Quill—a high-end, not high-spend jewelry line. And, there's no telling what she's got up her sleeve next. What all of these ventures have in common—beyond Alli herself—is that they opt to make something we all need (or want)—blowouts, massages, therapy, little luxuries—more within reach. In this sense, each endeavor also reflects what Alli represents on a more personal level as a stay-at-home-mom turned mogul—she makes launching a business, following a dream, or frankly “just doing the damn thing”.. within reach. Something any woman could do, as long as she's willing to jump. While she's graced the covers of today's most esteemed business and beauty publications, she has leant her expertise on the hit show, Shark Tank. She's an extremely successful entrepreneur and investor. But yes, she's also just like you—a woman who survived a public divorce and found love on the other side. A mom who bravely and full heartedly sent her son to rehab. A person who loves to give back and finds value in not only how well her ventures do, but how they make people feel—how she makes people feel. Get on your OUAI to save for the holiday.
