A chemical engineer turned community development organizer, Anthony Taylor shares the career journey that led him to founding Melanin in Motion, a Community Wellness Center program that connects children of color—and their families – with active pursuits like skiing, cycling, kayaking. Melanin in Motion was a Twin Cities Business 2024 Community Impact Award winner. “I noticed my white friends, when they think about preparing their kids for law school, they're putting them in the woods. That's the secret for making more lawyers,” Taylor says. “I want all communities to realize the benefits of municipal, state, federal investment in natural places that can show up in children being resilient, confident, and collaborative.” Taylor talks about how working for successful Minnesota wellness companies, Life Time and Aveda, helped him become a well rounded leader, and what he learned from his own startups, Spa One and Simply Organic Beauty, that led him to shift course and work for the Loppet Foundation and as president of equity outdoors for the YMCA of the North. “Melanin in Motion really is the culmination of that idea, where we see culture as an asset,” Taylor says. He also gives us a preview of his next venture: RiverNorth Development Partners, a social impact development group that is working to create a business district in North Minneapolis that prioritizes “equity driven employers” that agree to create skilled jobs for area residents who have been marginalized. Ion Aerospace is first to sign on, with plans to open on West Broadway in 2025. Following our conversation with Taylor, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Schulze School of Entrepreneurship where associate professor Alex Johnson teaches entrepreneurship. He talks about the pros and cons of starting a venture on your own versus within a larger organization, and explains the difference between an inventor and an innovator. “Inventors create things. Innovators identify the problem, the value, and build a solution.”

He is 33 and had a career in Corporate America (worked with students and been in HR) prior to joining the Beauty Industry. -- Victor sees a gap between exiting school directly and being the stylist you want to be. -- There are a number of different things cosmetology schools can do to increase the awareness of the students and help prepare them for longevity in the Beauty Career -- Bringing in people like Industry Aligned to discuss body mechanics and how it can impact your career or exposing students to L'Oréal's Head-Up mental health training program -- Having an undergrad degree, he recognizes that many life skills aren't taught in college, so it's not just the Beauty Industry-- As Victor prepares for graduation by shadowing and interviewing at different salons, coming from an HR background, he feels there are places where we can add more structure, rigor, and process, especially so people have the information they need to make informed decisions to set themselves on a path to success -- How do we know what you say is what you'll do if it's not written down? How can I assess integrity and growth plans if it's communicated casually as opposed to a place to access/as a resource? -- Think about providing various touchpoints of opportunity to learn more about people on a behavioral level -- Understand what the Rising Stylist does well and how they want to grow from a technical level -- Goal alignment: Where do you want to be, and how can we both push each other to grow and learn together?-- There needs to be more intentional conversations (less open-ended) but also honesty about the vision for the salon/space, how you are looking for folks to grow, and what might be coming that is on the road map. This will help Rising Stylists make informed decisions and Owners be more comfortable about talent coming into their space.-- This is not an individual profession; being a business owner is not an individual task (you're leading & managing people and shepherding a vision. You can't effectively shepherd without being able to share a clear vision, get feedback, and share expectations.-- At school, people have varying experiences because they don't know what they should experience. -- Do the educators stay with you for the whole haircut or walk away and come back? How do we work together?-- Victor predicts that we will return to caring more about the fundamentals (WE all need to define what that means), but it will be led by the guests' needs/wants. -- Guests will notice you gave them the exact cut they wanted, but if they say it doesn't look the best on them and a stylist doesn't have the fundamentals, they won't be able to satisfy the client....

Redefining Beauty & Health, Holistic Dental Care, Essential Oils & Harnessing Sunlight w/ Nadine Artemis

The Red Light Report

Today's guest, Nadine Artemis, is simply an amazing, vibrant being with an extraordinary, voracious curiosity and a brilliant mind for authentic health and wellness. Ultimately, these wonderful attributes coalesced and led to Nadine creating her very own luxury health & beauty company, Living Libations. She is described by Alanis Morissette as “a true-sense visionary," while Aveda founder, Horst Rechelbacher, calls Nadine “a pure flower of creativity.” I can corroborate both of these testimonials after the illuminating conversation I had with Nadine, where we cover an array of fascinating topics from sunlight to essential oils to holistic dentistry to debunking beauty and health product myths and much more! Living Libations is a luxury line of organic wild-crafted non-GMO serums, elixirs, and essential oils for those seeking the purest of the pure botanical natural health/wellness and beauty products on the planet. We discuss many of these products and why Nadine feels so impassioned to create them and the "why" behind what makes them unique and highly sought after. For example, sunscreen theoretically "protects" you from the sun while it is instead laced with toxic chemicals and blocks you from receiving the beneficial, nutritional light from the sun; this is a double whammy with negative health benefits. Nadine would rather advocate for utilizing a product that has zero toxins and, instead, integrates natural elements and well-being substances (i.e. essential oils) that promotes healthy sun exposure while also providing nourishing health advantages; in this case, a double whammy with positive health benefits! She carries this principal forward with face and hair beauty products, arm pit solutions and oral health creations.Nadine is also the author of two books, Renegade Beauty and Holistic Dental Care (links to these books below), as well as a frequent commentator on health and beauty for media outlets and her products have received rave reviews in the New York Times, Goop, New York Magazine, Vogue, InStyle, the Hollywood Reporter and many more. She is a beauty philosopher, aromacologist, and botanical muse. Nadine believes in simplicity and a natural, rhythmic approach -she is a disruptor to the mainstream idea of "wellness" “beauty” and “beauty products.”  Needless to say, Nadine is a brilliant mind with a whole-hearted, vibrant soul. She is simply a joy to learn from.    As always, learn lots and light up your health! - Key points: Introduction (00:00:00 - 00:01:32:23): Dr. Mike welcomes Nadine Artemis, creator of Living Libations, to discuss her journey and holistic approach to beauty and wellness. Background (00:01:33:00 - 00:03:08:19): Nadine's childhood fascination with nature led to her aromatherapy store. Recognizing flaws in mainstream body care, she created Living Libations. Projects and Books (00:03:08:19 - 00:08:04:00): Nadine's books, "Holistic Dental Care" and "Renegade Beauty," are well-received. Living Libations focuses on organic, wildcrafted products. Collaboration and Challenges (00:08:04:02 - 00:10:21:24): Dr. Mike explores Living Libations' resilience, challenges, and collaboration with Nadine. Popular Products and Innovation (00:10:21:24 - 00:13:34:13): Living Libations' innovations include dental serums and oil-based facial cleansers, emphasizing botanical biotics. Beauty Myths and Ancestral Practices (00:14:01:11 - 00:18:24:20): Nadine dispels beauty myths, emphasizes ancestral practices, and explores the benefits of essential oils. Sun Exposure and Vitamin D (00:24:11:09 - 00:33:28:09): Discussion on balanced sun exposure, debunking sunscreen myths, and Nadine's personal practices. Essential Oils and Quality (00:40:20:26 - 00:43:27:15): Nadine stresses the importance of quality essential oils, addressing common issues and bioactivity. Engaging with Elements (00:44:01:05 - 00:46:34:41): Transition to engaging with natural elements, holistic well-being, and the positive effects of sun exposure. Holistic Dental Care (00:51:51:05 - 01:04:36): Overview of holistic dental care, emphasizing the living nature of teeth, and Nadine's book insights. Tooth Care Practices and Red Light Therapy (01:04:35 - 01:08:12): Discussion on dental care practices, anecdotes, and the importance of red light therapy for health. Closing Thoughts (01:09:40 - Closing): Dr. Mike expresses gratitude, emphasizing small health steps, and Nadine encourages embracing the sun and making simple switches for oral care. - Watch this episode on YouTube - Learn more about & from Nadine Artemis:   Website: https://LivingLibations.com/  Twitter/X: @LivingLibations   Instagram:  @nadineartemisofficial & @livinglibationsofficial   YouTube: @livinglibationsofficial   Facebook: @livinglibations & @nadineartemis - Books By Nadine Artemis: Renegade Beauty Holistic Dental Care - Learn more about methylene blue & BioBlue: Methylene blue BioBlue - Dr. Mike's #1 recommendations: Grounding products: Earthing.com EMF-mitigating products: Somavedic Blue light blocking glasses: Ra Optics - To learn more about red light therapy, methylene blue, and shop for the highest-quality red light therapy products, visit https://www.biolight.shop - Stay up-to-date on social media: Dr. Mike Belkowski: Instagram LinkedIn   BioLight: Instagram YouTube Facebook

As Estée Lauder's first-ever Chief Data Officer, Jane Lauder is combining data science with creativity to fuel the growth of the company. Jane has worked at Estée Lauder for 26 years – 24 of which she spent working on the brand and marketing aspects of the business. While working as the Global Brand President of Clinique, Jane saw the power of data to drive all aspects of the business, motivating her to transition into her current role. Estée Lauder Companies is one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of luxury skincare, makeup, fragrance, and hair care products. It encompasses a house of about 30 brands including their flagship brand Estée Lauder, as well as other brands such as Clinique, Crème de la Mer, MAC, Jo Malone, Aveda, Le Labo, Bobbi Brown, Origins, Dr.Jart+, Too Faced cosmetics, and more. The beauty giant was founded by Jane's grandmother, Estée Lauder, over 75 years ago. Before there were data and analytics to pull from, Estée Lauder would gather information about potential consumers by analyzing women's bathrooms, paying close attention to details such as décor and the colors of their tiles. She then used this information to design aspirational product packaging that would elevate its surroundings. “In the beginning, we were a one-woman research company, and that one woman was Estée Lauder.”Today the company has a wealth of digital and in-store data. Jane and her team use this data to understand consumers' aspirations better, gain insight into how different consumers use their products, and spot emerging trends in the cosmetic industry. This information helps them to respond to trends and tailor their products and messaging to meet consumers' unique needs and aspirations. As Estée Lauder's Chief Data Officer, Jane's biggest obstacle resides in deciding how to best utilize the ample data she has access to. Another obstacle lies in determining how to strike a balance between satisfying consumer needs today and investing in the future of the company. “You want to be able to use the data you have to create incredible opportunities, but also think about how to unlock the data for the future, and how to set up the foundational data sets, and data containers, if you will, to be able to create this quick analysis of the future.” Jane believes the future is promising for those seeking roles as data scientists within the cosmetics industry. The cosmetics industry is teeming with opportunities to connect with consumers and make a difference.

Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. Today's guest is an author and the owner of Living Libations, Nadine Artemis. Nadine shares her knowledge and information about oral care and total health in this episode. She gives an excellent description of how oral health impacts the rest of our bodies. Nadine chats about the ingredients in numerous kinds of toothpaste and the products that many dentists use that actually harm our overall health. She educates us about the dentinal lymphatic system and the impact that stress and lack of nutrients have on the system. Tune in today for this educational discussion and how to increase your oral health, which will leave your overall health flourishing.IN THIS EPISODE:●   [5:10] Nadine tells us how she started her business and how she got started in entrepreneurship so young.●   [14:20] What will a dentist see in the mouth that indicates potential cause for concern? ●   [16:28] How do we know the connection between oral health and overall health?●   [18:50] What is the dentinal lymphatic system? ●   [24:49] What's the deal with fluoride?●   [26:30] Is mouthwash good for our oral health? ●   [30:15] Is supporting the oral microbiome similar or the same as supporting our gut microbiome? ●   [31:33] What are dentists doing in scaling and root planing? ●   [32:14] How do we keep happy, healthy gums?●   [39:00] How can you find a holistic dentist, or what conversation should you have with your current dentist?KEY TAKEAWAYS:●   If you switch to baking soda for the rest of your life, you'll be far better off than using any commercial product. ●   Digestion begins with chewing your food; nutrition goes into the roots of your teeth and into your bloodstream. If you are highly stressed or have negative nutrient health, it can reverse the lymphatic system in your mouth, and that's where issues with oral health happen. ●   Many of the ingredients in toothpaste and the items that dentists use are causing harm to our oral and total health. A wide variety of natural products can be used to create optimal oral health. There are also alternatives to having cavities filled and gum surgery, so make sure to ask questions to your dentist to uncover the most natural options available.  QUOTES: “So if that stress continues or that poor nutrition continues, then this dental fluid system doesn't just stagnate; it reverses. So then we've got the tooth acting like a straw sucking in from the mouth rather than being a fluid that goes out to the mouth. That's the genesis of how a cavity is formed.” - Nadine Artemis “You want to think of your body and your mouth; it's actually like a mouthful of bustling bacteria that's going to keep the dentist away. We want to think of our bodies like these microbial back accounts that we want to have a lot of diverse investments of bacteria in.” - Nadine ArtemisRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Living Libations WebsiteLiving Libations TwitterNadine Artemis' InstagramLiving Libations InstagramLiving Libations YouTubeLiving Libations FacebookNadine Artemis' FacebookGUEST BIO:Nadine Artemis is the author of two books, including Renegade Beauty and Holistic Dental Care.
