For authors, there are typically two schools of thought around writing a novel. Plotters are authors who prefer to carefully plan out every aspect of the story before putting pen to paper. Pantsers, on the other hand, prefer to let the story unfold organically as they write. The two approaches are essentially opposite ends of a spectrum, and while there are probably times when most authors are a little bit of both, there are many who identify very strongly as being on one side or the other. But which side is right for you? That's the question we attempt to answer in our Pantster vs Plotter Throwdown! On the Pantser side, we have Danielle Stewart, a USA Today bestselling author who has written over 50 books without having plotted a single scene. On the plotter side, author Bethany Maines is almost as prolific, but uses butcher paper and spreadsheets to detail out her award-winning novels. Watch as the two authors verbally duke it out until one side cries mercy and changes their writing style forever… Just kidding, of course! The fact is, there is no right or wrong in this debate - just two different styles that fit two different types of writing personality. So, if you haven't yet settled on which approach works best for you, Danielle and Bethany lay out all the arguments to help you figure it out. Gram Ponante talks with comedian (and 2015 AVN Awards show host, now airing on Showtime) about comedy, drinking, promiscuity, addiction, and Massachusetts. "Shortly after I talked with Danielle, she became absolutely the best host of the AVN Awards in my personal 10-year history of attending. (This was not because I'd talked to her; I just happened to be there slightly before she went onstage.) Most comedians just don't know how to walk the line between the audience at home and the one at whatever Vegas casino convention center the awards are staged in. Either they watch too little porn and appear like an outsider or they watch too much porn and they come off as crass. Porn stars want to be seen as elegant and sophisticated. They don't need to be reminded of their movie titles and what a cheap joke that is. It's the same with porn consumers. So, knowing this, Danielle was fantastic.
Author Jason Smith is not a writer who languished in obscurity for years as he tried to make sense of his journey through addiction to recovery. The Northern California based former teacher only started writing a mere year ago because he was on an ankle bracelet due to some legal trouble (more about that in a sec) and was trapped at home. He loaded some of his stories onto Medium (a fabulous site but one where most posts get lost and ignored) and the rest is history. People started reading them. Lots of people. A book deal followed and that book, The Bitter Taste of Dying, is now being hailed as one that leaves the reader "gasping for breath." While Smith's writing is undeniably gripping, he also had a lot of rich history to pull from: he went from trying pills in high school to losing his virginity to the hottest girl in his class that very day. And you could say he spent the next chunk of his life chasing that high, from continent to continent, job to job, high to high. In this episode (where we're joined by Danielle Stewart!), we discuss attractive sponsors, sex inventories and doing fentanyl in space, among many other topics.
