1985 studio album by "Weird Al" Yankovic
POPULARITY
The undisputed godfather of brilliant hilarity goes his own way, and a band that couldn't be more ridiculous on paper turns out to be the perfect band for what might be the best tribute ever. We're not kidding. Dare To Be Stupid, originally by Weird Al Yankovic, covered by Cybertronic Spree. Outro music is Turbo Heart, also by Cybertronic Spree, because they really deserve another listen.
Polka time, baby! Lauren is joined by Russ and the newly-appointed "Polka Bob" to dive into the accordion-fueled madness of "Hooked on Polkas," the high-energy album closer from Dare to Be Stupid. We break down Weird Al's brilliant medley choices, discuss what makes polka so undeniably fun, and celebrate the joy of accordion-fueled chaos. Is this the ultimate party anthem? Does "Hooked on Polkas" still hold up today? And just how does one become a certified "Polka Bob"? Tune in for laughs, deep dives, and—of course—some serious polka appreciation!Beer'd Al is a polka-riffic member of the OddPods Media Network.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/beer-d-al-podcast--5439475/support.
Lauren and Russ are back with a quick and fun discussion about "Cable TV" from Dare to Be Stupid! It's an okay song, and this is an okay-length episode—so why not give it a listen?
Pop the champagne and polish your monocles, because we're living the high life on this episode of Beer'd Al! Lauren and Russ are joined by fellow Weird Al aficionado UH-Jeff, who's here to talk all about “This is the Life” from the Dare to Be Stupid album. But that's not all—Jeff is also promoting his documentary, Tight & Nerdy, a deep dive into the world of Weird Al-inspired burlesque. Yes, you read that right! We have a blast dissecting the song, its classic gangster movie vibes, and what it really means to “have money, money, money and stacks on stacks.” Plus, we may or may not do a little time traveling along the way! So whether you're spending this Valentine's Day with someone special or just treating yourself to a little Weird Al goodness, grab a fancy drink, sit back, and enjoy this wild ride through Al-verse opulence.Beer'd Al is a member of the OddPods Media Network.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/beer-d-al-podcast--5439475/support.
Grab a snack and get ready for a fun and fascinating deep dive! In this episode we're serving up a hearty discussion on Weird Al's Dare to Be Stupid classic, "Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch." Joining me at the table is author and musicologist Lily Hirsch, and together, we unpack the humor, the history, and the gendered music themes behind this quirky parody. Was Al truly hungry for satire, or was he just forced to take a bite? We chew on that, share some laughs, and explore the broader cultural implications of gender in music. So grab a cold one (and maybe a sandwich) and tune in for another deliciously nerdy episode!Beer'd Al is a girly member of the OddPods Media Network.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/beer-d-al-podcast--5439475/support.

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is a hot topic right now, especially within the arts. This episode does not take a stance either way on the issue, rather explores it's capabilities and power. We experience online A.I tools in real time and also discuss the positives, and the negatives, of artificial intelligence in the arts. -------------------- Hosts: Jason Walton and Nick Wusz. It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast!, where our own movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. Today's episode it's a double-dose of silliness as our hosts explore two comedies separated by three+ decades, yet firmly inside the wild, wacky, and wonderful world of the imitable, totally hospitable "Weird Al" Yankovic. First up is 1989's UHF, the first (and only) feature-film starring the polka playing impresario himself in a pastiche of comedy vignettes skewering everything from Conan, Rambo, and even the Mahatma. It's a farce of epic proportions about the power of local broadcasting, imagination, and cheap labor. A box-office dud, it's since became a major cult classic and early showcase for Micheal Richards, Fran Drescher, and spatulas. Next is 2022's Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, the “true” story of how a gifted young man was corrupted by the evil call of the accordion (i.e. the Devil's Squeezebox). Just kidding! It's actually Al's Daniel Radcliffe-starring satirical spin on the typical dour ‘n dreary music biopics that scoop up statues come awards time. Will Weird Al ever win an Oscar? Who needs Oscars when you've got the power of polka!
Alfred Matthew Yankovic, Born October 23, 1959, in Downey, California, the only child of Mary Elizabeth (née Vivalda) and Nick Yankovic. Weird Al rose to international, NO, Intergalactic stardom with his weird brand of pop/rock music. And we LOVE him for it. Hot on the heels of the release of "WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story" on Roku, I'm sitting down with a guest who has seen Weird Al 29 times! AND wrote a book about him. I've invited the author of “Weird Me”, the book that follows a moderately successful webmaster of a "Weird Al" Yankovic fan site. From minor notoriety to jet-setting for concerts, to earning a stalker, Weird Me showcases the awkward (and true) intricacies of an adolescence spent carving out a corner of the internet frontier in dedication to the king of parody. Of course, I'm talking about Kelly Phillips. Kelly is here today to discuss our Five Favorite Weird All Songs, both Parodies and Originals. I guarantee, this episode will be Weird! This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt revisit the scientifically magical world of Wakanda with ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'! T'Challa has passed and to make things worse, Namor arrives in the MCU with his roguish charm and ankle wings to cause problems for our heroes. Then it's on to the Roku Channel original, ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story'. It's a week of film with colons. Will the artist responsible for such luminary classics as Eat It and Dare To Be Stupid deliver a biopic that even Matt can enjoy? There's the scrumptious rundown of the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Streaming and Straight to DVD Picks of the Week. Jaz Zepatos is featured on this week's episode of Nicstalgia. We talk about being funny, not caring about what people think, and getting used to feeling stupid. (Or in the words of the inimitable Weird Al, “Dare To Be Stupid”.) You will come to discover in this episode that both crying in public and falling down a flight of stairs are essentially rites of passage living in New York City. We discuss Jaz's experience with improv, making music, being a former child actor, and how to dismiss the limiting tropes and stereotypical boxes that female-identifying comedians are put in so you can be be the funny, smart, sexy, and [whatever you want] person to desire to be. We realize just how many similarities there are between Mean Girls and Never Been Kissed, My So Called Life, and well, kinda everything that came before it. We also play a game where Jaz composes songs about our favorite movies! Am I the next Princess of Genovia? Who's to say. Shout out to (probably) listeners of the podcast, Weird Al, Dua Lipa, and Evan Rachel Wood. About our Guest Jaz Zapp is a comedian and content creator that thrives in the millennial corner of the internet. As I'm still working on the next Retrospective episode, here's a bonus bit of filler. Just Toby and I being nutso, something that would usually go into outtakes. But we also have a discussion on the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once that gets into spoiler territory. If you're interested in hearing us talk about stuff that isn't New Century, you may well get your wish. In the mean time, enjoy this bit of random joy. Goodness knows we need it. We're back with another round of listener feedback! That's right kids, it's time for TRAPPO's Mail Bag! This week, we're talking about Neil Marshall's The Reckoning, Madonna's Ray Of Light, the career of "Weird Al" Yankovic, including what may be his magnum opus, "Dare To Be Stupid", the techno madness of Wanton Witch, Tank Girl, the Howard The Duck movie, the fake band Banjo & Sullivan from Rob Zombie's very real movie The Devil's Rejects, Zombie's upcoming The Munsters movie, the increasing ridiculousness of Zombie's continuing musical career, and a whole bunch of other Rob Zombie-related stuff, apparently, because that's just what this episode became. Music comes in all kinds of forms and some of them are funny as well as pleasing to the ear. In my opinion, that perfectly describes "Weird Al" Yankovic's 1985 classic, Dare to Be Stupid. Joining me to dissect this excellent slice of mid-80s pop culture is Lauren Carey from the outstanding Beer'd Al Podcast. Lauren and her brother combined their two favorite things, craft beer and the music of Weird Al, to create a unique and entertaining show. In addition to discussing Dare to Be Stupid, we talk about the origin of the Beer'd Al Podcast, where her love of Weird Al began, and more. And look for me on the next episode of Lauren's show as well, as we take a different angle and rank our songs from the album, countdown style. Pursuing your creative passion involves a certain amount of awkwardness, since you'll need time to develop yourself as a creator. But then when it comes time for the question of whether to share your creation with the world, that brings a new set of fears: of being laughed at, or rejected, or ignored. It can take a lot of courage to share your passion with others, but the possibility of finding your audience outweighs the risk of looking foolish.
