The name "Dr. Jonas Salk" is synonymous with one of the greatest public health achievements of all time: The Polio Vaccine. The arrival of Salk's vaccine in 1955 was a beacon of hope and reinforced the role science can play to serve the public good. When asked who owned the patent for the vaccine, Salk famously replied, "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" In 1994, and just one year before Dr. Salk passed, polio was considered eliminated in North and South America. Today, vaccine hesitancy - driven by a host of reasons - has eroded childhood immunization rates in some parts of the country, and reignited a debate over vaccines as a stress test for public trust in science.rnrnContinuing the work of Dr. Jonas Salk is his son, Dr. Peter L. Salk. A graduate from Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he would go on to work in his father's laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies from 1972 to 1984, and again from 1991 to 1995. Together, they would research the biology and immunotherapy of cancer and autoimmune diseases, and develop an inactivated vaccine for HIV infection. Nowadays, Dr. Salk spends his time educating the public regarding his father's life and work and exploring approaches to reducing the severity of various public health problems. Since 2009, Dr. Salk has served as president of the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation in La Jolla, California. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health, Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology.rnrnIn partnership with the Mt. This week, we have Prof. John Beckett Wallingford to discuss the current landscape of federal science funding, and the importance of science in American industry and society. We set the scene with a reading of The Polio Vaccine, Chatham, Virginia, 1964, by Claudia Emerson. John Beckett Wallingford is a developmental biologist with three decades of experience.  He is the Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Doherty Jr. Regents Chair in Molecular Biology and a Professor in the Dept. of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin.  Since 2003, his laboratory has sought to understand how form and function arise in embryos using advanced microscopy, systems biology, and biomechanics. Wallingford's research explores animal models and collaborates with human geneticists to understand human birth defects. He is writing a forthcoming book about embryos:  In the Beginning.

In a world where the word “vaccine” has become both a household term and a lightning rod for debate, it's easy to forget the remarkable impact immunizations have had on public health. In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Dr. Jeff Feit, Valley Health's Population and Community Health Officer, to revisit the story of vaccines—past, present, and future. A Legacy of Prevention Dr. Feit, a former family doctor, recalls a time when diseases like measles, mumps, and polio were not just textbook topics, but real threats. “The smallpox vaccine was the original vaccine story,” he explains, noting that the eradication of smallpox stands as one of medicine's greatest triumphs. Since then, vaccines have saved an estimated 150 million children in the last 50 years, with over 93 million lives spared from measles alone. From Commonplace to Rare—and Back Again? For many clinicians today, diseases like measles are so rare that they've never seen a case. “We're lucky now,” Dr. Feit says, “but that luck is the result of decades of widespread vaccination.” He recounts how the introduction of certain vaccines virtually eliminated once-common causes of childhood hospitalization and death. Yet, as vaccination rates dip in some communities, these diseases threaten to return. The Expanding Vaccine Schedule Janet shares her own journey as a parent, navigating an ever-growing list of recommended vaccines. Dr. Feit explains the rationale: while some vaccines prevent common, deadly diseases, others—like the meningitis and HPV vaccines—target rarer but devastating illnesses. “If they're preventable, shouldn't we try to prevent them?” he asks. Dispelling Myths and Building Trust The conversation turns to vaccine hesitancy, fueled in part by misinformation and a breakdown in trust. Dr. Feit addresses the long-debunked myth linking vaccines to autism, emphasizing the importance of relying on credible, research-based sources. “There's just no evidence it's connected,” he says, urging listeners to consult trusted healthcare providers rather than social media. The COVID-19 Effect COVID-19 brought vaccines back into the spotlight, with new technologies and rapid development sparking both hope and skepticism. Dr. Feit acknowledges the challenges but points to overwhelming data: “The more vaccinated, the fewer people died of COVID.” He predicts that future generations will view COVID shots as routine, much like measles vaccines are today. A Call to Community Ultimately, Dr. Feit sees vaccination as an act of community care. “Public health is hard because it forces us to rely on one another,” he reflects. The benefits of vaccines extend beyond individual protection—they safeguard the most vulnerable among us. Where to Turn for Answers For those seeking reliable information, Dr. Feit recommends starting with reputable institutions like the Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic, and—most importantly—building a trusting relationship with a primary care provider. “They know your family history and can help you make informed decisions,” he says. As the episode closes, Janet and Dr. Feit agree: education and open dialogue remain essential. Vaccines have transformed our world, but their story is still being written—one conversation, one community, and one shot at a time.

Now, new Bird Flu vaccines are being pushed forward on the market as mask mandates return to countless cities worldwide and fearmongering continues. Attempted murder is being insinuated regarding a Canadian doctor in Alberta who was on the Covid Data Task Force. In the relentless swirl of war and politics over the past year, the inhabitants of Gaza have often been treated more as pawns than as human beings by political and military leaders, activists, media and even those who claim to be their advocates and allies. "People outside of Gaza sometimes forget that their lives are actual lives," Haaretz correspondent Nagham Zbeedat said on the Haaretz Podcast. The result – as with the circulation of conspiracy theories regarding the campaign to administer polio vaccines that is currently underway – can be dangerous. Zbeedat closely follows and reports on developments in Gaza, including a video casting doubt on the World Health Organization's vaccination effort posted by Gazan social media activist Bisan Owda. In it, Owda questions whether Gazans should allow their children to be injected with material permitted by Israeli authorities and questions the motive behind Israel's seemingly humanitarian gesture. "Palestinians in Gaza actually asked her to remove the video, to delete it, and even to publicly apologize for it," Zbeedat said, while outside Gaza Owda "was being praised, supported and even more [speculation and] theories were introduced in the comment section" under her video. In view of this phenomenon, Zbeedat believes that her own reporting on all aspects of life inside Gaza – from creative cooking using ingredients found in aid packages to water storage to the struggle of Gazan women to obtain menstrual products – emphasizes that "these people had normal lives and should have a normal life, but they are not given that opportunity." Zbeedat also discussed life in Israel at the moment for Israeli Palestinians, from being "hunted" by Israeli authorities when their social media posts are too explicitly supportive of their Gazan friends and relatives, to discomfort around allying with Jewish Israelis. "Just yesterday, I saw a post about an image from one of the demonstrations: "Bring them back and then return," referring to bringing back the Israeli hostages and then re-settling Gaza. Polio has been around since ancient times but it was a very quiet disease for most of history, affecting few people and raising little alarm. It wasn't until the 20th century that polio began to appear among the masses, terrifying epidemics, a mysterious disease that seemed to target children out of nowhere, paralyzing them, killing them. No one knew how it spread. No one knew how to treat it. No one knew how to stop it. They quarantined. They avoided swimming pools and water fountains. They lived in fear. But the strange thing was, these polio epidemics were only happening in developed countries in Europe and North America, countries that had recently gone to great lengths to ensure improved hygiene and sanitation. Good hygiene, cleanliness, was supposed to prevent the spread of disease. How had it backfired so horrifically with polio?
