Accordion Noir Radio - Ruthlessly pursuing the belief that the accordion is just another instrument.
A month ago I alerted your regular Accordion Noir host Bruce Triggs that “Weird Al” Yankovic had just released a new polka medley to celebrate the ten-year anniversary
Joss Jaffe & Jim “Kimo" West share stories and songs off their new album, Santhi. Grammy-winning, acclaimed slack key guitarist Jim “Kimo” West, the longtime guitarist in “Weird Al” Yankovic's band, and world percussionist/instrumentalist Joss Jaffe introduce their new unique global fusion album Santhi. Inspired by the spirituality and natural splendor of the famed Indonesian island of Bali, Santhi's Sanskrit title means “peaceful in spiritual and physical happiness”. Listen to Santhi: https://ingrv.es/santhi-u1d-e Having never even seen Waikiki, JIM “KIMO” WEST came right to the tiny village of Hana, Maui in 1985 and spent much of his time there for many years. It was in Hana where he first heard the music of Gabby Pahinui, Sons of Hawaii, Sonny Chillingworth, and Atta Isaacs. Already familiar with alternate tunings, the sound of ki ho'alu became rooted deep in his musical landscape. Kimo is regarded as one of the world's foremost “ki ho'alu” or Hawaiian “slack key” guitar artists and his music has garnered over seventy-five million spins on streaming services. He is a 2021 Grammy Winner for his recent CD, “More Guitar Stories” and a 2019 Grammy nominee for “Moku Maluhia-Peaceful Island”. He is also a 2008 winner of the Hawaii Music Awards and four-time Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian ‘Grammy') nominee. He is also a two-time winner of the LA Treasures Award for his efforts in keeping this important acoustic guitar tradition alive. This warm and engaging fingerpicked guitar style has its roots in 1840's Hawaii, when Mexican vaqueros first brought guitars to the Big Island of Hawaii. If you saw the Oscar-winning film, “The Decendants” you have experienced this great acoustic guitar tradition. Kimo is a veteran of Hawaii's famed slack key festivals as well as the So Cal Slack Key Festival every year from 2008 through 2018. He has shared the stage with almost all the world's top slack key players at one time or another. His numerous CDs feature many original compositions as well as inventive arrangements of the genres' classic repertoire. His seventh CD, “Guitar Stories” goes beyond slack key, exploring other genres like West African guitar, Middle Eastern Music, and Americana. “Slackers In Paradise” features duets with slack and steel guitar legend, Ken Emerson, and his latest CD, “Moku Maluhia-Peaceful Island” is a mix of “nahenahe” or very relaxing compositions. For his work as long-time guitarist with “Weird Al,” he has earned four Grammy's and a Billboard #1 CD debut for 2015's “Mandatory Fun.” Kimo has also worked as a composer for film and TV for many years and maintains a sophisticated private studio in Los Angeles. He has composed music for features films, network TV shows and specials and cable shows. His slack key compositions have been used in many feature films, TV spots, and documentaries. JOSS JAFFE is a world musician known for his unique blend of musical influences and genres. Born in Santa Barbara, Jaffe took an early interest in music, learning guitar, piano, drums, and tabla as a child. After high school, he attended UC Berkeley, honing his skills in composition and improvisation and as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist in ensembles of African, Gamelan, and Middle Eastern music. Music. His music ranges from modern pop and reggae to soothing, brainwave-entraining compositions for relaxation, yoga, and meditation. Today, Jaffe continues to pioneer pushing musical boundaries with his experimental recordings and live performances. His leadership of his band at premiere yoga conferences and transformational festivals is a testament to his influence. Jaffe';s founding of the record label Artizen, which serves as a platform for dynamic cross-cultural collaborations with talented musicians worldwide, underscores his role as a bridge-builder in the music industry. His creative approach to music has inspired fans and fellow artists, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration. https://jossjaffe.bandcamp.com Host Bonnie Burkert melds the worlds of media and higher consciousness, sharing tools for transformation to find our highest truth and live our brightest life. https://www.instagram.com/yogi_bon/ Subscribe and listen now on @TheClubParanormal your favorite podcast platform to join us in this compelling journey into the darkness. Three of our favorite segments from the week, in case you missed them.Poverty in Black and White (First) | The City's First Official Trash Can (Starts at 35:37) | "Weird Al" Yankovic Celebrates 10 Years of "Mandatory Fun" (Starts at 1:04:11)If you don't subscribe to the Brian Lehrer Show on iTunes, you can do that here.
10 years after his comedy album "Mandatory Fun" became the first comedy album in history to hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, "Weird Al" Yankovic, musician, comedian, and actor, looks back on his career parodying hit pop songs, previews his latest single "Polkamania!", and takes calls from his multi-generational fanbase.
The one and only Weird Al Yankovic calls in and talks about 10 Years of Mandatory Fun, The Super Bowl Halftime Show, changing lyrics and his many music videos.
Jay smothers Weird Al with love and appreciation for Al's perfection in his parody. We talk about Mad Magazine, Looney Tunes, pizza, travel, doing what you want, the power of an orchestra, the two pulls of being a comic vs a musician, how a true showman can come out of Linwood, and giving up architecture for being a professional goofball/genius. Bio: FEW WOULD HAVE GUESSED that “Weird Al” Yankovic – who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show– would go on to become a pop culture icon and the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with classic song and music video parodies such as“Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.” Now in his fourth decade as America's foremost song parodist, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including five Grammys® (out of sixteen total nominations) and a string of Gold and Platinum albums. In 2015 and 2016, Weird Al's Mandatory World Tour encompassed 200 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and a sold-out gig at New York's Radio City Music Hall. In the spring of 2018, Al performed 77 shows as part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, where he and his bandmates of over 35 years played setlists composed almost entirely of his original (non-parody) material, and without any of their signature over-the-top theatrics (no costumes, props or video screens). And in 2019 Weird Al followed up his most bare-bones tour with his most extravagant tour ever – Strings Attached – where he and his band were backed for each of their 67 shows by female singers and a full symphony orchestra.Weird Al's 14th studio album, the Grammy® award-winning Mandatory Fun (2014), became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and the first to even reach the top of that chart since 1963. Yankovic set the U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time, taking the top four spots. In addition, “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2).Al has remained active as a recording artist. June 2017 saw the release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Dreamworks), for which Al co-wrote and performed the film's theme song. In August 2017, Al wrote and performed “The North Korea Polka (Please Don't Nuke Us)” for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). In November 2017 Legacy Recordings released Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, a remastered 15-disc box set (including a rarities album) plus a 120-page book of archival photos, all housed in a replica of Weird Al's trademark accordion. Al also recorded cover versions of the Squidbillies theme for Adult Swim and the Ramones' “Beat on the Brat” for a Dr. Demento compilation album, and produced remixes of two hit singles for Portugal. The Man (“Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment”). And March 2018 brought us “The Hamilton Polka,” a frantic tour de force mash-up of 14 songs from the Broadway smash, commissioned by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself and released as part of his “Hamildrops” series. In addition to his cult-hit feature film UHF (1989), his late ‘90s CBS Saturday morning series The Weird Al Show and numerous AL-TV specials he has made for MTV and VH1 over the years, Yankovic has remained a staple of film and television, from appearances on The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Goldbergs and How I Met Your Mother to performing live on the Primetime Emmy Awards and starring in his own concert specials for Disney, VH1 and Comedy Central. In 2015 Yankovic took over as co-host and bandleader for the fifth season of IFC's Comedy Bang! Bang! Currently Al can be heard as the voice of the title character in Disney Channel's animated series Milo Murphy's Law (his other voice acting work includes appearances on Bojack Horseman, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wander Over Yonder, and the DC animated feature Batman vs. Robin). Yankovic added “New York Times bestselling author” to his resumé in 2011 with the release of his children's book, When I Grow Up (HarperCollins), followed two years later by My New Teacher and Me! An animated series based on his children's books is currently being developed in partnership with the Jim Henson Company. 2012 saw the release of Weird Al: The Book (Abrams), an illustrated hardcover on Al's life and career, and in 2015 Yankovic became not only MAD Magazine's cover boy, but the first guest editor in their 63-year history. In 2017 NECA Toys released the second in its line of retro-clothed Weird Al action figures, and in 2018 Funko released two of its own POP! vinyl figures. On August 27, 2018, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded “Weird Al” Yankovic with the 2,643rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Fresh from playing the Paranoia Mandatory Bonus Fun Card Game, Dan and Paul discuss their experience with various editions of the Paranoia RPG. Stay alert, trust no one, and keep your laser handy! Paranoia is a humorous role-playing game set in a dystopian future along the lines of Nineteen Eighty-Four, Brave New World, Logan's Run, and THX 1138; however, the tone of the game is rife with black humor, frequently tongue-in-cheek rather than dark and heavy. Most of the game's humor is derived from the players' (usually futile) attempts to complete their assignment while simultaneously adhering to the Computer's arbitrary, contradictory and often nonsensical security directives. Originally designed and written by Greg Costikyan, Dan Gelber, and Eric Goldberg, and first published in 1984 by West End Games, since 2004 Paranoia has been published under license by Mongoose Publishing. The game won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Rules of 1984 and was inducted into the Origins Awards Hall of Fame in 2007. Paranoia is notable among tabletop games for being more competitive than co-operative, with players encouraged to betray one another for their own interests, as well as for keeping a light-hearted, tongue in cheek tone despite its dystopian setting. Sarah salutes a good Samaritan Amazon worker and then she confesses to her secret love of Amazon (despite her previous boycott of the company). We learn about a man who was fired for not having enough fun at work. He sued the company for wrongful termination after they claimed he was a big party pooper. We discuss how we hate required fun and team-building exercises. Sarah tells us about a monastery in Thailand that was raided by the police because they were all hopped up on meth. We theorize why these monks are so into meth when there is perfectly good shrooms and pot that could complement their meditating. We discuss an online debate about whether your family used a "popcorn bowl" for vomiting, and Susie is not ok. Apparently many families use a food bowl for their puke and this seems bizarre and also very very disgusting. But guess whose family did this...Sarah's. Plus, we discuss the amazing Goodnight Oppy documentary and Sarah's Kardashian obsession. Opening and Closing Song: I Ran by Flock of Seagulls This particular show is a little different than usual BECAUSE there is nothing technically to review here. Instead this show is all about what happened at my wedding and honeymoon. So this is a little bit of a time capsule. But for those that want a little insight between weddings, or the amusement parks we went to visit, I feel this is a good opportunity for you to hear about some of the fun stuff that we got to do. Funnily enough I believe I failed to mention during the show why I called this show Mandatory Fun. While we were waiting in line at Islands of Adventure we overheard a dad tell his child that they had fun but now it was time for mandatory fun as you could see the kid either didn't want to be doing what they were doing OR was getting tired. And I felt that was kind of apt considering how the beginning of our day/trip went.
Alfred Matthew Yankovic, Born October 23, 1959, in Downey, California, the only child of Mary Elizabeth (née Vivalda) and Nick Yankovic. Weird Al rose to international, NO, Intergalactic stardom with his weird brand of pop/rock music. And we LOVE him for it. Hot on the heels of the release of "WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story" on Roku, I'm sitting down with a guest who has seen Weird Al 29 times! AND wrote a book about him. I've invited the author of “Weird Me”, the book that follows a moderately successful webmaster of a "Weird Al" Yankovic fan site. From minor notoriety to jet-setting for concerts, to earning a stalker, Weird Me showcases the awkward (and true) intricacies of an adolescence spent carving out a corner of the internet frontier in dedication to the king of parody. Of course, I'm talking about Kelly Phillips. Kelly is here today to discuss our Five Favorite Weird All Songs, both Parodies and Originals. I guarantee, this episode will be Weird! In this return form, our heroes are back and ready to serve up a bowlful of parody as they look at “Weird” Al Yankovic's 2014 release `Mandatory Fun'.Most may reduce the parody maestro to cheap tricks and thrills, but not our boys. They search deeper to find the musicality within. This record was Al's first chart topper and had a mixture of original (style parody) and regular parody tunes. As Kurt Cobain allegedly once said, “you haven't made it until Weird Al does a parody”.Of course along the way the guys throw in their trademark off the wall and “esoteric” humour. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Andrew Heaton. Andrew is a comedian and political satirist you might know from Reason TV. He is the host of The Political Orphanage, a funny policy analysis show for people tired of tribalism. You can find him on Twitter at @mightyheaton.Andrew Music Pick: “Weird Al” YankovicYou should know a few things about Al before we start. First, Al is super smart. He was two years younger than all the other kids in grade school and was going to be an architect before music intervened. Second, Al is super nice. There are no bad stories (that we know of!), no scandals. He doesn't even do a parody unless the artist gives the "Okay," even though there's no particular reason for him to do that. Three, Al is a super-good songwriter. You might think of parodies when you think of “Weird Al,” but a goal of this show is to convince you that his originals & pastiches are even better. The short Al story begins with the “Dr. Demento” radio show. Al was a fan. He passed him a cassette tape with some songs when the Dr. visited his high school, one of which then was played on the show. After that, Al continued to contribute and people took some notice. Well before the first album was released, he got national airplay with the singles "My Bologna" and "Another One Rides the Bus" -- the latter was recorded live on Demento's show and not even re-recorded for the debut. That '81 performance also is where Al met his long-time drummer. The rest of the band was put together in '82 and they've been together since. Not bad when it comes to longevity and loyalty. There are essentially four types of "Weird Al" songs:1. Straight parodies (think "Eat It," “Fat,” “Smells Like Nirvana”)2. Pastiches (song in the style of REM, Devo, Talking Heads, Cake, Bob Dylan, etc.)3. Pure originals4. Polka medleys of current or past hitsThere are certain recurring themes – food, TV, movies, the sad sack in love, lyrics with escalating comedic situations -- but through Al's lengthy career, he's shown the ability to adapt to whatever is in front of him, both musically and culturally. There are ups and downs to be sure, but his last album, Mandatory Fun (2014), was Al's first number one album, a sign he still commanded a sizable fanbase of nerds and weirdos. Of which all three of us are, of course.Join the crowd, shout it out loud! Dare to be stupid with Political Beats and “Weird Al” Yankovic.
We're getting “Inactive” this week! This is from the 2014 album Mandatory Fun, so that means you MUST listen! Join us as we try to imagine some dragons… Is a dragon a reptilian pegasus? Summer of Love This year's Summer of Love event week began with a guild Town Hall on Sunday, July 25th, continued with a week of events across all our games, and ends with our most important and solemn event, Remembrance Day, Monday, August 2nd 2021. Each game division will have its own ceremony/gathering place and it will also be broadcast on the https://www.twitch.tv/aieguild channel. Voice will be in AIE Discord - https://aie-guild.info/discord For those not familiar, this marks over 10 years of special summer events we've held with the guild centered around Remembrance Day, a day when we take a moment to gather in voice and in game to remember those we have lost. Spread across the rest of the week are a series of special fun game events in almost every game division. These include player run events, special edition Mandatory Fun nights, and maybe even some contests and prizes. Here's the rundown of how each game celebrated the week. NOMADS The Nomads a special board game night Thursday night. They played two games of Downforce, which is a popular racing game, and a game of Love Letter. WoW

Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz - A Drumming Chameleon Born in Chicago in 1956, drums came into Jon's family from Wm. Ludwig Jr. as a gift to Jon's older brother in return for some advertising work their father did for the drum company. After a family move to Phoenix, Arizona, Jon inherited the kit and began taking formal lessons in 1965. He also listened and played along to the radio hits of the day, as well as albums including everything from Gene Krupa to Elvis, Latin orchestras, and especially the Beatles. *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen The Rich Redmond Show is sponsored by: Big Dot Lighting - Commercial LED Lighting Specialists and Bruce Cline Home Loans & Mortgage Refinance | Movement Mortgage www.musiciansmortgage.com Another family move took the Schwartzes to Los Angeles in 1968, and it was then that Jon decided to be a professional drummer. He continued to take lessons, joined his school's advanced band class and a local junior marching band, and later drummed in a precision marching band where he brushed up on his rudiments. One such distraction began on September 14, 1980, when Jon was invited by Dr. Demento to be interviewed on his live radio show to talk about the songs he'd submitted years earlier; Jon and his friends were among the first people to have home-made music played on the Dr.'s show at the time. It was there that Jon met "Weird Al" Yankovic, who happened to be answering request lines that night. Already a staple of the Dr. Demento show, the 20-year-old Yankovic played accordion and had been sending his homemade parody tapes to Demento on a regular basis. That night, he would debut his newest parody, Another One Rides The Bus, live on the air. Al asked Jon if he'd mind pounding out a straight beat... on the accordion case! Jon cheerfully agreed, and evidently had a great time: It wasn't long before permanent bass and guitar players were recruited, and Al's first album was released in May, 1983. Guitar legend Rick Derringer produced Al's first six albums through 1989's UHF Soundtrack, and Al himself took over the production duties starting with 1992's Off The Deep End. To date, Al and the band have released fourteen studio albums, most of them reaching Gold and Platinum status with a few Grammy Awards thrown in for good measure. In 2014, the Mandatory Fun album debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 Album chart! They've toured 3 continents, made videos, and appeared extensively in electronic and print media. Jon is also Al's archivist, assembling an unmatched collection of Weird Al's music and appearances on retail and promo audio and video products from around the World. Assorted memorabilia, tour merchandise, personal items, magazine articles, and more than 100,000 concert, studio, tour, and behind-the-scenes photos round out the archive. In 1996 Jon left Westwood One, and his fascination with the Internet since 1993 soon led to another pursuit: designing web sites. He'd already developed a site for Weird Al in 1995, and within a few years, business license in hand, Jon sought additional clients, and continues to keep busy on the computer both at home and on the road. In 2020 Jon became a published author with BLACK & WHITE & WEIRD ALL OVER, a coffee-table book featuring his unreleased black-and-white photographs of Weird Al from the early '80s. There are still gigs and recordings with various local players, but none quite as notorious as Jon's perennial association with Al, which he regards with great pride: Some Things That Came Up: -Black, white and Weird -Taking pics for Al over the years -Creating sound design -Getting the parodies to sound exactly like the original -Getting to record in Michael Jackson's favorite room -Getting the gig via the Dr. Demento show -Al puts on a highly produced show -Playing at the same level as e did 30 years ago -Al's near misses..... -Working the Bermuda Schwartz name Follow: @thegreatbermuda facebook.com/bermudaschwartz www.bermudaschwartz.com The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success.
