This week on Fuel for the Sole, we unpack the David Bars allegations and go off the rails a bit—you know how we do. Then we get into your questions: why does body mass matter for carb loading but not race-day fueling? What's behind those cold sweats? Can you actually overdo it on protein? Why are gels so hard to get down mid-race? And what's really causing those dreaded mid-race pit stops?Want to be featured on the show? A protein bar company got dragged across the internet last week — accused of miscalculating their calories, compared to Mean Girls, and handed what most brands would call a PR nightmare. David Protein did the opposite of hiding. They leaned in, brought out a food scientist, made the jokes themselves, and came out the other side with more trust than they started with. In this episode we dive into:• Why "bad PR" might be the biggest opportunity your brand never asked for• The real reason trust gets built (hint: it's not from always being right)• What a protein bar scandal has to do with your fitness goals• How to stop sitting in discomfort and actually make progressThe Scandal, The Science, and the Mean Girls Reference• David Protein built their entire brand on one claim: 150 calories, elite macros, nothing like the rest• A lawsuit surfaced suggesting the bars are closer to 230 calories — and the internet immediately had opinions• Instead of issuing a cold PR statement, they put a food scientist on camera and explained the calculation like you were a friend, not a shareholder• Then they found out people were comparing them to Mean Girls — and they made the jokes themselvesWhat Most Brands (and People) Get Wrong About Backlash• The instinct is to panic, disappear, or go cold and corporate — David did none of that• They stepped directly into the mess, used humor as a tool, and humanized a faceless CPG brand in 95 seconds• The Mean Girls recreation video wasn't damage control — it was proof that you can own a narrative without being defensive• Leaning into criticism, when done right, creates more connection than any perfectly polished post ever couldYour Body Doesn't Care About You Being Right• Changing your mind isn't a weakness — in nutrition, in content, in life, it's actually the whole game• Krysta has episodes from the early FYX days she'd walk back today, and that's the point: five more years of experience earns that shift• The people making the most progress in fat loss aren't the ones following a perfect system blindly — they're the ones willing to say "this isn't working, let's adjust"• Progress comes from honest reflection, not from forcing a tool that no longer fits the season you're inThere is no such thing as building trust by always being right. Whether you're a brand navigating a public moment or someone quietly wondering why the plan you swore by last year isn't clicking anymore — this episode is the reminder that honesty and being right don't always go hand in hand, and the ones worth trusting know the difference.Follow Krysta:@thekrystahuber@thespreadmktg@thefitnessfyx
Do This, NOT That: Marketing Tips with Jay Schwedelson l Presented By Marigold
A quick scroll through marketing news somehow turns into Instagram breaking a rule everyone thought was untouchable, LinkedIn quietly shaking up your feed, and a very real debate about whether restaurant bread should require consent. Jay Schwedelson bounces from useful email and social updates to pure pop culture chaos, which is exactly why this one is such a fun listen. There is an actual strategy here, but also a solid argument that aliens might be getting unfair PR. Best Moments:(00:16) Instagram is testing links in post captions for Meta Verified users, and that could make the blue check way more valuable.(01:45) LinkedIn just rolled out a major algorithm change, which may explain sudden, weird swings in followers and engagement.(02:55) Putting Q2 in your email subject lines right now can lift open rates by more than 20%.(03:45) April is one of the strongest months for emoji subject lines, especially for travel, spring, and promo-heavy campaigns.(04:45) The David Bar founder turns a calorie controversy into a viral moment with a Mean Girls reference.(07:38) Steven Spielberg says he believes in aliens, which sends the conversation straight into delightfully unhinged territory. MASSIVE thank you to our Sponsor, CallRail!CallRail is the AI-powered lead intelligence platform that helps marketers prove exactly what's driving results. My conversation with snack industry LEGEND Josh Schroeter, the Founder and CEO of South 40 Snacks. South 40 Snacks is a Seattle-based snack startup selling fruit and nut bars. I've been invested in the company for almost 4 years now and have watched them grow from $1.5M in sales to ~$12M this year. I wanted to talk to Josh on HyperChange about what it's like to build a snack brand and why he thought he was going to be able to disrupt the nut bar category against giants like KIND bar and Peter Rahal's new David Bar. I'm a big fan of the snacks, especially the pistachio bar, mango bar and c cashews, I recommend you give South 40 a try!South 40 Snacks website: https://south40snacks.com/0:00 Intro0:55 The Snack Industry3:22 How Sahale Snacks Disrupted Trail Mix4:07 South's 40's Transparency & Simplicity5:33 What You See Is What You Eat8:22 Giant-Sized Cashews8:56 Telling The Sustainability Story9:41 South 40 Snacks Nut Bars 10:39 The David Bar by Peter Rahal11:24 Nut Bar for the Mainstream12:18 Fruit Bars16:22 Billion Dollar Snack Brand19:20 How Social Media Has Changed Marketing20:35 Innovative Distribution Strategy22:22 Why Are You Focused on Snack Bars?23:39 Upcoming Snack Bars From South 4026:05 Global Expansion26:58 Scaling Artisanal27:52 Natural Food RevolutionMy X: / gfilche HyperChange Patreon :) / hyperchange Disclaimer: I'm an invested in South 40 Snacks persoanlly and through my Venture Capital Firm HyperGuap.
