Who Replaced Avril Lavigne? Joanne McNally Investigates

It's been a long journey, but finally Joanne is ready to close the book on Furby. She's learned about their rise to fame, and the rumours of espionage. And she's done her best to de-bunk them, by intrusively opening one up for examination, speaking to experts, and tracking down the man behind the marketing. But as the sun sets on her quest, she still needs to find out why the rumour began in the first place. And she needs to speak to David Hampton - the inventor. That journey takes her via TikTok and FaceSwap - two apps which, Joanne discovers, have been linked to data gathering. Joanne is already fearful of what data she's sharing online, and her browsing habits have radically changed. But one last browse deep into the web reveals a stunning new find - a dossier of evidence which includes the original NSA memo about the Furby... and within it, the real reason it was banned by security experts.Convinced that she finally understands what went on, Joanne concludes by meeting David Hampton. She learns about the Furby origins, little-known facts about it's powers, and some secrets about the brains behind it. But was Furby designed to spy? David has a surprising answer in store.A What's The Story podcast for BBC Sounds

Saving You a Seat

Sobriety can be a miraculous and challenging change for someone stuck in the throws of addiction. It turns everything you once thought you knew upside down, inviting you to see the world in a new light and step into radical wellness. Sobriety is certainly not a journey for the faint of heart.. It is not a one-time put-down-the-thing type of deal. It is a one-day-at-a-time deep dive into emotional, spiritual, and relational healing and humility. The heartbeat of sobriety is honesty, openness, willingness and a lot of surrendering of control. This week, I am delighted to welcome David Hampton to the table. David is an author of two books, host of The Positive Sobriety Podcast, and a certified professional recovery coach. As a result of his own recovery he not only confronted his own alcoholism and the wreckage it caused. He redefined his spiritual understanding, coming away as a renewed man with a story to share: a story found at the intersection of desperation and gratitude. David and I tackle how difficult it can be, and critical it is, to look within to achieve transformative wellness and freedom in sobriety. Join us as we talk about life after the miracle and how it is a daily journey into wholeness. Here's what we connect on: How putting down the numbing substances is only the first step on the long journey to recovery + the disruptive nature of sobriety (2:15) The true meaning of “getting well” in the context of sobriety (7:45) Choosing wellness + finding the honesty and strength throughout sobriety to fight for your wellness (14:07) I share an incredibly symbolic story of the impact and wreckage of addiction (16:06-18:24) The addictive and toxic culture that promotes comparative thinking on social media today (22:58) Thank you so much for saving a seat for us this week! In 2009, a hall at the Stroud School of Arts in Dungog, Australia revealed an engaging secret: a hand-painted silk banner from the 19th Century.  Two years later the banner wound up in the collection of the Newcastle Museum where David Hampton would eventually find it and begin unravelling it's fascinating history.  Made in London by Tutill and Company, it was the pride and joy of Williams River Lodge of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows.  The banner would have been carried by multiple members in parades and served as a strong reminder to the community that Odd Fellowship was a reliable bulwark against the vagaries of life. The banner was used by the lodge at least up until the late 1940s, when membership was still nearly 650 members.  Eventually the lodge folded and the hall became part of the local school, at which time the banner was moved and stored under the floorboards in a hall at the Stroud School of Arts.  Mostly forgotten at that point, it came into the collection of the museum in Newcastle who raised money and sent it on to Sydney where some restoration work was done to preserve it for future generations.  The banner is remarkable both in the condition it survived in, and for the incredible craftsmanship and artistry with which it was made.David Hampton, curator of the Newcastle Museum, joins us to tell the remarkable story of the banner and how it reflects nearly a century of changes in the social and fraternal life of Australia.  Along the way we hear about what life was like for the emigrants to Australia in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and how groups like the Odd Fellows provided essential assistance and also they paralleled labor union and other trade organizations of the time. There is no lodge Shoutout in this episode (please feel free to contribute nominations) but in the Odd Podge Ainslie shares about his new eBay score, a clay Odd Fellows' pipe, and Toby asks David about the Somerton Man (Tamam Shud) case to see if he has any background on it.

Behind the scenes of his successful 25 year music career, David was a man hiding in, wrestling with and finally confronting his own alcoholism and recovery process. He began his journey into sobriety in June of 2005 which eventually led him to pursue his certification as a credentialed Certified Professional Addiction/Recovery Coach (CPRC) now working in private practice in Nashville, Tn.   In this episode, we shine the spotlight on the many ways we can numb our emotions, deny our pain, and tell ourselves stories about what is true...simply because it hurts to feel. David gives us an honest look at how distracting ourselves with alcohol, food, shopping, social media, perfectionism and more, only puts us in deeper places of despair and how real healing from from pain and trauma begins once we become honest with ourselves. David Hampton finally told a friend that he was an alcoholic. Years later, he’s now an addiction recovery specialist helping people out of the situation he had once been in himself. I first knew David, though, as the worship leader at the church I attended in college. I had heard through the grapevine that his wife was not doing well. I did not realize she was bedridden for years with MS, and sadly, I had not heard that she had passed away a few years ago. But truthfully, I probably would not have heard about any of this, had it not been for the fact that a few of my friends, friends who have undergone the long and incredible task of breaking addiction, who started telling me about this amazing man who had been guiding them into a life of sobriety. Once I connected the dots and realized this was a guy I at least knew a little bit, I just knew I had to talk to him. This was so rich, and so useful. I don’t believe there is one person on this planet who isn’t addicted to something.  And when I say addiction, I don’t necessarily mean addiction to substances.  Addiction is a compulsion to continue doing something despite harmful consequences.  And if we look at addiction through the lens of the Enneagram, we can view the passion of each Enneagram type as an addiction.  The Enneagram helps bring to awareness what these unconscious addictions and compulsions are so we can start to unwind the influence and power they have over our lives.  In other words, we can move into recovery from the worst side of our type. So, in today’s episode, we talk about each Enneagram type’s compulsion and what recovery (or sobriety) for that type looks like.

I'm not kidding when I say Enneagram Nines (The Peacemakers) are well represented in my universe of relationships. My wife Anne is a Nine. My daughter Maddie is a Nine, and as you'll soon learn, a disproportionate number of my friends are Nines as well. On this week's show we decided to try something new. We invited not one but a panel of FOUR Enneagram Nines into the studio to describe what it's like to be members of the Peacemaker tribe. Why host a panel? In my experience, people learn more about different Enneagram types when they hear people who self-identify as that type talk about their lives. Why listen to me talk about a type when you can hear from folks who live it everyday? This week you'll meet four of my closest friends—Singer-songwriter Andy Gullahorn, guitarist, businessman, (and five time Grammy nominee) Randy Williams, Sobriety Coach and counselor David Hampton, and Chris Gonzalez, PhD, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and Director of the MFT program at Lipscomb University. We honestly didn't know what would happen when we stuffed me, my guest co-host Rabbi Evan Moffic, my producer Chad Michael Snavely, and four others guys into our tiny recording studio with a six pack of beer but as you'll soon hear -- it was magic. This is one of the most entertaining and enlightening shows I've ever been a part of. My panel today happens to be all men, but we've already scheduled a panel of four women to be on the show in the next few weeks and a mixed gender panel as well, so keep your eyes and ears open for those shows! Suggested Readings for Enneagram Nines: - Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want, by Michael Hyatt - The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life with Everyday Courage, by Mel Robbins Be sure to listen to Episode 24 of The Road Back to You Podcast with Enneagram Nine Chris Gonzalez. My wife, Anne, is a Nine and she's listening to it! ---- To download a PDF of a chapter from Ian's book called Finding Your Type, visit TypologyPodcast.com. ANNOUNCING: Nate Larkin is hosting a national Samson Society weekend intensive focused on positive sobriety. Interested? Click here to provide your email address. You'll be the first to know all of the details when price and schedule are announced. All of the podcast Buccaneers will be there. Click to receive more information.   Nate Larkin's own Silas, worship pastor and author David Hampton, climbs up into the treehouse for episode 171. They guys talk about what happens AFTER the pink cloud of early sobriety disappears. How do you maintain passion for recovery? How do you deal with those around you who either aren't used to the new you or keep expecting you to revert to the old you? Our Guest Though the first bullet point on his resume would include almost two decades as a worship director at a prominent Nashville mega church, the greatest impact of David Hampton’s career and narrative isn’t summed up so neatly. David’s life story is certainly highlighted by his prodigy-like talent at the piano, his awards for songwriting and musicianship, the songs and hymns he has published and recorded, and traveling with a host of well-known music artists. However, David found the theme that emerged as he became more successful was one that he would never have chosen or written into one of his melodies—and one that ultimately would offer life, hope and healing. The twists of his wife’s suffering with a progressive and eventually debilitating disease and his own subsequent spiral into alcoholism began derailing what, at first, seemed like a storybook life. David recounts his days as a “professional Christian” trying to spin the plates of a very public ministry life and a serious addiction to alcohol with candor. David’s journey into recovery brought more than just a means by which he learned to live without alcohol. He became keenly aware of his spiritual bankruptcy and all the unaddressed questions of his faith and lack of it. His story includes how he entered recovery, incorporated spiritual guides from ministers to monks, the sensory overload of fresh sobriety, and determining what parts of his old belief system would make it into the renewed version of himself that was emerging.   Music Used David Hampton's latest project is Fuel Music Group's "Split the Sky." Listen to the full song here: Purchase the music from Amazon or iTunes. We'd love to hear from you. Please take a few minutes and answer questions on our listener survey. Ten Point Coalition: VISION: The Vision of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition is to be a catalyst for creating a strategic vision, programmatic structure, and financial resources necessary to save lives of at risk youth from crisis such as violence, drugs, teen-age pregnancy, and chronic unemployment. TARGET The target are youth 14-24 years of age in selected "hot spots" or high at risk areas. These areas have been deemed "high risk" due to the number of homicides that occur in the area. METHOD Method is to engage high risk youth, drug dealers, and gang bangers in order to encourage them to leave a life of crime and violence and make healthier life choices. We do this by employing Street Outreach workers who engage these high risk individuals in a variety of venues including faith walks, homicide scenes, and funerals. http://www.indytenpoint.com/ Tuesday September 1st, 2015  at the 8 o'clock hour Pastor Denell Howard Hovey Street Church Of Christ, Indianapolis, Indiana The Black Male Initiative is not just a moment, it's a movement.
