Have you ever felt as if the dreams you had for yourself would never be fulfilled? Perhaps you felt your life was spiraling out of control. Most of us have felt that way at one time or another. Our God is a God of new beginnings. He said, “I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts. . . . Once again you will have all the food you want, and you will praise the Lord your God, who does these miracles for you (Joel 2:25-26). This Thursday Tom Moucka will tell us his story of God's restoring love and the second chance God gave him. You may know Tom (he is one of us). You may remember him because he told us about the Samson Society last August after Nate Larkin told his story. (Tom is president of the Samson Society). I knew Tom a number of years ago when he felt his life was spiraling out of control. This Thursday is a day I've been praying for . . . when Tom can praise the Lord who has done these miracles for him.

As the son of a Pentecostal preacher, Nate Larkin spent his childhood in storefront missions, camp meetings, and youth rallies. But after just five years in the pastorate, Nate quit because of an addiction to pornography and commercial sex and a private despair about his moral failures and the fear of public exposure. After years of praying, fasting, and repenting in private, Nate finally found help for his sex addiction in the authentic friendship and safety of a 12-step recovery group. The 12-step group accomplished what solitary prayer and fasting could not do. He learned that the Christian life was designed by God as a team sport! Nearly 20 years ago Nate and a few other Christian men began meeting in groups called The Samson Society where they had a safe place to take their real selves and say real truth about things they had kept hidden. Since then more than 450 Samson Society groups have started in North America and nearly 10,000 men have participated. One way to think about it is that “Sound of Freedom” – this summer's hit movie about child sex trafficking – tells a story about combating the supply side of an evil, while the Samson Society deals with the demand side of the same evil in men's hearts. In part, the growth has been due to the leadership of Tom Moucka, who has been president of the Samson Society for the last six years. Nate was the second speaker we had at our NCS breakfasts a dozen years ago and Tom is frequently with us at Puckett's. Both Nate and Tom will be with us this Thursday, August 3, to share their stories and what God has been doing in their lives and through the Samson Society.

A significant challenge men and women face in recovery is image management—the attempt to control how they are perceived by others. This can be even more challenging for those in the church. Today, we're joined by Nate Larkin (founder of Samson Society and author of Samson and the Pirate Monks) to discuss what motivates this desire for image management. We talk about how to identify when we slip into image management, the pitfalls of it, and ways we can avoid or step out of image management.

Nate Larkin knows the pressure to live up to a public persona. He knows what it's like to have a secret that can destroy a career. He knows what it's like to quit. And He knows what it's like to find healing, deep friendships, and hope. Nate has a story that unfortunately too many people can relate with, addiction to pornography and sex. So in 2004, several of these friends formed a mutual aid society for Christian men called the Samson Society. Within the safety of the Samson Society, honest friendships have taken root and men are finding new power in their faith. Nate, who drafted the Society's charter and designed its first meeting format, has written a book about his experiences entitled Samson and the Pirate Monks: Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood, which was published by Thomas Nelson in February 2007. (He is also the author, with Darrell Waltrip, of Sundays Will Never Be the Same). As of 2012, more than 250 local Samson Society groups are functioning in the United States, and others have started in other countries. A social networking website has been established to connect men who do not have access to a local meeting. Nate loves talking to men about their need for community and how they can overcome struggles together. Things We Talk About in this Episode Why men often don't want to look to external sources to find help for sex addiction and porn addiction. Why intimacy in a relationship is about so much more than sex and why it can be hard for men to realize that How contempt for a man's own action in addiction can create contempt in the relationship and how to break them out of that mindset. Why having a community of sex addicts is important to recovery and how to overcome the voice in a man's head saying they can recover on their own.

Previously, Nate Larkin shared his personal testimony about struggling with a pornography addiction and how he eventually found freedom. This week, he and Gary discuss the types of sexual addiction and where they can spring from in our pasts. God wants to heal these deep heart wounds. As we heal from internal injuries and shed addictions, we will find it easier to forge deep and meaningful relationships with others. Gathering healthy community around us will make staying on the road to recovery easier. Nate Larkin of the Samson Society shares with Mike how his life and marriage were saved when he understood the importance of being in relationship with other brothers in Christ. He thought he was completely alone in his struggle with pornography, which eventually led him down a dark road into prostitution and a suicide plot. But by God's grace he was finally “caught.” He wasn't aware that what he needed was healing, not forgiveness. “I was always begging for forgiveness that was already mine because I didn't understand the Gospel.” Porn was just a medicator for the deep wounds in his life. He needed connection. Porn offers the illusion of connection, but in reality, it cripples us from creating emotional connections. “Lust kills love.” Like many of us, Nate tried to fight a solo battle. “I wanted this ‘me and Jesus' relationship that wouldn't require me to expose myself or connect with anyone else.” But Nate was freed by learning we are part of a body – we can't walk alone. Jesus called two men to follow Him, and then he called 10 more. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20 “Then the LORD God said, It is not good for man to be alone.” Genesis 2:18a Resources: Read Nate's full testimony in his book, Samson and the Pirate Monks: Calling Men to Authentic Brotherhood, or listen to it on Audible. Protecting Our Kids: “Our relationships with our kids help porn proof them.” We don't want to take away their innocence, we want to take away their ignorance. Shame them if you want to keep them from talking and promote compulsion. It's not just a men's issue. We need to talk to our daughters as dads. It's imperative to talk to kids starting very young. Model accountability. They need to see the importance of having others in your life. Behaviors to Model: “Freedom is real, and victory is intoxicating!” Accountability is great, but we need to help each other identify and change ritual behavior. Build distance between you and the behaviors and create a new habits. Success happens through community; it requires community to create healing. God makes community in the church, but you have to step into it. Don't feel defeated. Decide today starts my path for victory.
