Season 3: Race and Education Episode 8: Race and Faith-Based Schools Given that this podcast is produced by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, it didn't seem right to have a season-long conversation around race and education without discussing the role of faith-based schools and their tremendous impact on communities of color - especially Black and Indigenous communities. So in this episode, host the Rev. Kathy Walker is joined by the Rev. Bradley Hauff, Indigenous Missioner for The Episcopal Church, and the Rev. David Madison, executive director for the National Association of Episcopal Schools, to take a look at the role those schools have played in the past and where they stand today.
How do you meet the needs of a diverse membership that includes tiny preschools, tuition-free schools in an urban area, and large, K-12 schools in an affluent suburb? What does it mean to be an independent school that is also an Episcopal school attached to a parish or cathedral? In this episode of Associations Thrive, host Joanna Pineda interviews The Reverend David Madison, Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES). David introduces NAES, talks about his journey to becoming ED of NAES, then talks about how NAES is thriving through a core commitment to helping member schools be excellent schools with an Episcopal identity. David discusses:How Episcopal schools are devoted to having strong academic programs and strong character development and formation for students. How Episcopal schools, although they may be connected to a parish or cathedral, are independent in their academic inquiry, and in the fact that 85% of students are not from the Episcopal denomination. How Episcopal identity informs pedagogy, formation, student life, governance, decision-making at the Board level, curriculum decisions, hiring decisions, chapel – everything. How NAES is using in-person and virtual events and gatherings to create connections between members because NAES members like to get together! How NAES is intentional with their Biennial conference schedule to ensure that during every time block, there is content for all roles and types of schools, while focusing on Episcopal Identity during the plenary sessions.NAES' consulting service that helps member schools with issues related to Episcopal Identity and governance. How the NAES communities allow members to post their questions, request help, and share resources 24/7; the communities are thriving! How NAES is set to offer monthly office hours with David and Monica (NAES Associate Director), during which members can pop in to chat with David and Monica, ask about programs, share an issue they're facing at their school, or just say hello.References:NAES websiteNAES Biennial Conference in 2024

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Alligator (1980) Ramon the alligator is flushed down the toilet as a baby and grows into a gargantuan monster by eating the corpses of laboratory animals that have undergone dubious hormone experiments, thus providing all the ecological and social subtext that one could possibly wish for, even if one doesn't normally go for films about giant alligators eating people left, right, and center--which is the inevitable and tragic result of Ramon's decision that the outside world looks rather more interesting than the sewers.. In 1968, a teenage girl purchases a baby American alligator while on vacation with her family at a tourist trap in Florida. When the family returns home to Chicago, the girl's surly, animal-phobic father promptly flushes it down the toilet and into the city's sewers. The baby alligator survives by feeding on the discarded carcasses of animals used in illegal experimentation and dumped into the sewers. These animals had been used as test subjects for an experimental growth formula intended to increase agricultural livestock meat production. However, the project was abandoned because while the formula had the desired effect of making the animals larger than normal, it had the unwanted side effect of massively increasing the animals' metabolism, causing them to develop an insatiable appetite. During the 12 years spanning 1968 and 1980, the baby alligator bioaccumulates concentrated amounts of this formula from feeding on these carcasses, causing it to mutate and grow into a perpetually ravenous 36 foot (11 m) monster resembling a Deinosuchus-Purussaurus hybrid with an almost-impenetrable hide. The alligator begins ambushing and devouring sewer workers. The resulting discovery of body parts exiting the sewers draws in world-weary police detective David Madison who, after a horribly botched case in St. Louis, has gained a reputation for being lethally unlucky for his assigned partners. As David works on the case, his boss Chief Clark introduces him to herpetologist Marisa Kendall. Kendall was in fact the teenager who bought the baby alligator in 1968. The two of them edge into a prickly romantic relationship, and during a visit to Kendall's house, Madison bonds with her motor-mouthed mother. Madison's reputation as a partner-killer is confirmed when the alligator devours a young officer named Kelly who accompanies Madison into the sewer searching for clues. No one believes Madison's story due to a lack of a body, and partly because of Slade, the influential local tycoon who sponsored the illegal experiments and therefore wants the truth concealed. This changes when obnoxious tabloid reporter Thomas Kemp, one of the banes of Madison's existence, goes snooping in the sewers and procures graphic and indisputable photographic evidence of the beast at the involuntary cost of his life. The story quickly garners public attention, and a citywide hunt for the monster is called for. After the police unsuccessfully attempt to flush out the alligator, Madison is put on suspension. The alligator escapes from the sewers and comes to the surface, first killing a police officer and later a young boy who, during a party, is tossed into a swimming pool in which the alligator sought rest.
We're doing another "nature run amok" film this Saturday, with episode 62, 1980s Alligator, with Crack That Wit, from @whittierbrewingco. A little girl has a pet alligator that her grump of a father flushes down the toilet. Flash forward 10 years, and that little rascal has been feasting on animals pumped full of weird chemicals from the Slade corporation. And it's over 30 long and angry. Angry. It's up to Det. David Madison to save the day. It's smart, funny, with nice scares. John Sayles penned the story, so you know it's going to be good. We paired it up with a Wit Bier that has an added twist: a bit of ginger. It's another fun episode we had a blast making. Thanks for listening! In this special bonus episode, I'm welcoming back returning guest Dr David Madison, who was on the podcast several years ago. Our mutual friend Tim Sledge suggested I interview him about his new book, Ten Things Christians Wish Jesus Hadn't Taught. This very readable book--designed to be read through easily in one sitting--is aimed primarily at Christians who are open to questioning their faith, and potentially dialoguing with others about some of the questions, doubts, and cognitive dissonance they may have been harboring, but were afraid to admit. The Atheist & Christian Book Club is an outreach of Watchman Fellowship, the parent ministry of Apologetics Profile. It is a monthly gathering of believers and skeptics respectfully discussing important books from both perspectives. In this special edition of Apologetics Profile, Kirby Anderson of Probe ministries interviews Christian apologist James Walker and atheist apologist Bill Kluck about this unique book club they founded in 2017. The interview originally aired on Point of View, an international syndicated radio program carried on 265 stations with an audience of about 1 million. Watchman staff apologist, Daniel Ray who helps facilitate the book club, was also interviewed. What Happens at the Club? Each month between 25 to 60 athesits and Christians share a meal together and then discuss important books alternating each month between an athiest book and a Christian book. Usually the author of the book is present to discuss the book or is avaialble by video conferencing to provide additional insight and take questions from the club. Since the pandemic, the club has been moved online to Zoom where the membership has grown to include particiapants as far away as India and Africa. Atheist and agnostic authors who have joined the club to discuss their books include: Michael Ruse, Graham Oppy, Richard Carrier, Robert Price, Aron Ra, David Fitzgerald, John Loftus, Seth Andrews, Steve McRae, Sasha Sagan (daughter of the late Carl Sagan), Jim Hall, Ken Daniels, and David Madison. Christian authors who have joined the club to discuss their books include: Gary Habermas, Paul Copan, Tim McGrew, Craig Keener, Frank Turek, Sean McDowell, Travis Dickenson, Melissa Cain Travis, J. Warner Wallace, Holly Ordway, Michael Bird, Craig Evans, Justin Brierley and Hugh Ross. Check out the links below to join the club online via Zoom. Welcome to Season 4 of the WatchPitch Podcast where we continue with our particular focus on exits... for start-ups, entrepreneurs and business owners...an exit strategy that could be the result of a Merger, an Acquisition or the outright sale of your business. Our guest today is David Madison, a serial business owner with 30+ years of Finance experience who is the guy you go to if you want to buy a business, or sell it. At the core of his guiding principles is the three-legged stool of any successful exit: a solid performing business independent of its owner/Founder, a buyer who knows how to execute that business and the culture fit involved with the blending of any Merger or Acquisition. Transsition risk is real and in this episode you will learn more about it and how to lower that risk. The arc of the exit just isn’t being talked about enough and that’s why we are here...so, let’s jump in and get started!
At the age of five David got his first taste of film making at age nine, when he was an extra in Hero at Large, a John Ritter film directed by Martin Davidson. Throughout his teen years, he appeared in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs and James Lemmo's Heart starring Brad Davis. Dave's recent work includes Emerging Past- a film he produced and in which he appears alongside his childhood idol, Stephen (Fright Night) Geoffreys, in a very funny scene. Mr. Hush, which he wrote, produced, and directed, has become a cult classic. It stars Brad Loree (Michael Myers in Halloween: Resurrection), Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night, 976-EVIL), and Steve Dash (Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part 2). Mr. Hush enjoyed a limited, US national theatrical run in NYC, LA, San Francisco, Atlanta, Dallas, northeastern PA, and Pittsburgh. It was released nationally on DVD and Blu-ray on August 7, 2012 and spent 6 weeks on Redbox's genre top 10 list. In 2012, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requested a copy of the Mr. Hush script to be placed in the permanent core collection of the Margaret Herrick Library to be preserved forever. In 2014, Dave started a podcast/radio show titled The End of the Night. In his first 10 episodes, guests included Corey Feldman, Doug Bradley, David Naughton, Brian O'Halloran, Harrison Page, Tiffany Shepis, Fred "the Hammer" Williamson, G. Tom Mac, and Tony Moran, just to name a few. In November of 2015, Dave released his film Middle Village. Its theatrical debut was at the historic Cinemart Theater in Queens, New York. It has garnered Laurels from the Forwardian Film Festival, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was featured on whatchareading.com's list of the best films of 2015. The film features his dear friend, Brian O'Halloran (Clerks 1 & 2, Mallrats), Ray Abruzzo (Mad Men, Sopranos), Scott Schiaffo (Clerks) and WWE Superstar Gene Snisky. .

David Madison has a PhD in Biblical Studies from Boston University. His strong interest in the Bible began during his teenage years, growing up in rural Indiana in a conservative Methodist home. His parents were not fundamentalists, however, and his mother introduced him to liberal Protestant Biblical scholarship by way of the 12-volume Interpreters Bible. After graduating from Indiana University he moved on to graduate school in Boston. But seminary studies, which included mind-numbing courses in theology, proved to have a corrosive effect on his faith. This process of faith disintegration continued even as Dr Madison served as pastor of two Methodist parishes in Massachusetts. As Dan Savage has said, he didn't lose his faith, he saw through it. He eventually made his escape from the church and pursued a business career. But his fascination with Biblical studies did not diminish, especially since the Bible is a self-incriminating document. He pursued theological reading as well, and marveled that serious thinkers could take it seriously. Sam Harris says it best: “Theology is now little more than a branch of human ignorance.” Dr Madison's concept for his book gelled as he reflected on the problems that hobble Christianity. There are, in fact, far more than ten problems, but the deconstruction of Christianity can be accomplished more efficiently by gathering them into ten categories. People like top-ten lists. How wrong can David Letterman be? These are a painless way—though not for those who panic at the idea of losing faith—to grasp that Christianity has been falsified. It shares the same fate as thousands of other religions that have faded from human awareness. We were delighted that Dr Madison took the time to talk with us about his book …
In the second half of my conversation with David Madison, we finish up talking about biblical inerrancy and move on to two tough problems facing Christianity: the problem of evil and the atonement. Theologians and scholars alike--both within Judaism and Christianity--have struggled to explain the problem of evil. Theodicy--a defense of a supposedly all-powerful, all-knowing and all-benevolent God--has long been a mainstay of both religions. David and I tackle this as well as discussing related issues with God requiring a human sacrifice so that human beings could go to heaven. Couldn't the God, who makes all the rules, just forgive everybody without requiring Jesus to die?
If you are someone who identifies as a Christian, do you feel you have the freedom to question what you think you believe, and what you think you know? Can you prove the existence of God and Jesus with 100% certainty? Is the Bible indeed inspired, inerrant (without error), infallible and totally trustworthy in everything it affirms? If you are in the process of deconstructing your faith, or just want to challenge your belief system, then don't miss this thought-provoking conversation with David Madison, author of 10 Tough Problems in Christian Thought and Belief: A Minister Turned Atheist Shows Why You Should Ditch the Faith. In this first half of 2 episodes, we discuss David's own faith journey from pastor to atheist, and challenge some of Christianity's sacred cows. Don't miss this conversation!

Born at Fort Riley, Kansas, actress Melanie Robel became an "Army Brat". Dealing with new surroundings, new friends and going where ever the wind and her family took her. In her teens, they settled in Florida and after some rambunctious behavior in high school, Melanie set her sights on a career in classical ballet. Sadly, after an injury sidelined that dream, she attended an open casting call and wound up being signed by a management agency. That led her to Los Angeles, but after a few months and a few dead ends, she moved back to Florida to a "normal" life and collage. Melanie graduated from Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology, but still felt something was missing. She realized then, acting was truly in her blood. Melanie has done a couple short and full length films. Also, currently enrolled in ongoing acting classes, which helps her pursue the passion that drives her acting. We did indeed get a phone call with David Lee Roth and he did sing for us Running With the Devil! Thank you David Madison for that awesome moment
