Some of today's top stories-- firefighters are gaining group on the Borel Fire, as it continues its trek across the Kern River Valley.    The blaze has quickly become one of Kern's largest and most destructive wildfires. All eyes were on Walker Basin and Rankin Ranch as flames inched closer.     But some of those folks are breathing a sigh of relief...as fire crews exhaust themselves to slow the spread. This after the Borel Fire nearly leveled the community of Havilah over the weekend...burning almost every building...including the historic courthouse. This fire started last Wednesday afternoon when a car crashed over the edge of the canyon...catching fire and killing the driver.    It more than tripled in size in a matter of days.    It has now scorched more than 57-thousand acres and is 5-percent contained. Still, hundreds of people remain under evacuation orders tonight...and more are watching and waiting to leave if the fire continues to spread.    Everyone living in the red zone is urged to go now if you haven't already.    Those living in the orange zones should pack and prepare to leave in case an order comes down.    The sheriff says, if you're told to go -- leave immediately.    Ignoring evacuation orders puts lives at risk, including first responders.Though the Borel Fire continues to rage, some residents are starting to see positive signs on the ground.           17's Robert Price paid a visit to the wildfire battlefield.while many in the Walker Basin area have evacuated, those who live on Rankin Ranch have decided to stay and protect their home.    17's Justin White visited the ranch once again to see how the Rankin family is faring with the Borel Fire looming nearby.

Some of today's top storiesbreaking overnight a pursuit that began with an alleged stolen vehicle in Los Angeles County came to an end last night in Kern County. The chase started around 7:30 yesterday evening in Stevenson Ranch and headed northbound on Interstate 5 over the Grapevine.    Officers with the California Highway Patrol chased the suspected car thief until the vehicle came to a stop on northbound I-5 just before the Taft Highway exit.     About an hour later, witnesses say a K-9 was deployed and the suspect was pulled out of the vehicle and placed under arrest.    He was given medical aid at the scene.    Both southbound and northbound lanes were shut down during the standoff, but have since reopened.Controversy continues to surround the Kern Golden Empire Transit District's leadership...as discussions take place about the organization's future.    The Board named a new interim CEO yesterday ...following the sudden dismissal of its much-respected CEO... Michael Tree... just four months into his new role. Many GET employees have asked for Tree's reinstatement. In a *special* meeting last month, the Board met to evaluate the performance of Michael Tree... GET's first new CEO in nearly 20 years.  But that meeting ended with Tree's dismissal instead.  Then at its *monthly* meeting ... the Board re-affirmed Tree's dismissal.  But the question of why Tree was let go remains confidential.  GET says it's a personnel matter.  Longtime Director of Maintenance Chris James… who has been with the district for 40 years… is the interim CEO. James will receive 10% above his current salary.     The next Board meeting is set for August 20.Five Bakersfield Police officers were justified when they shot and killed a man after a harrowing gun battle in 2021.    That's the ruling from the California Department of Justice.    But while the shooting was justified, the justice department was critical of the B-P-D's body-worn camera policy    17's Connor Dore reports. We are saddened to report this morning that a legend of Downtown Bakersfield and longtime owner of Guthrie's Alley Cat, Kenny Reed, has passed away. 17's Robert Price has this tribute.

Robert Price is a voice teacher, director, and level five advanced clinical massage therapist specialising in the voice and jaw. He trained in voice studies at the Central School of Speech and Drama before teaching and directing in many drama schools and currently serves voice users at his Vocal Massage London and at the Voice Care Centre. Robert teaches vocal massage to other teachers, osteopaths, physiotherapists, and SLTs, and he's here to help us understand how we can perform massage on ourselves and guide our clients in self-massage in the studio. KEY TAKEAWAYS Robert finds massage beneficial for stress and anxiety. He discusses how vocal massage helps shift from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic state, calming the nervous system and fostering connection. Individuals should listen to their bodies and engage in self-massage with care, avoiding extremes and focusing on gentle, thoughtful touch. Robert also recommends seeking professional training for those interested in pursuing vocal massage as a practice. Robert's vocal massage techniques for stress management include gently mobilising the larynx, performing anterior neck stretches, massaging the submental region, encouraging thoughtful self-touch, using a holistic approach with whole-body techniques like Qigong, and ensuring consent-based touch. These methods promote relaxation, improve mobility, and reduce tension in the vocal area. Example Daily Routine. Morning: Start your day with a few minutes of gentle neck stretches and submental massages. Afternoon Break: Take a short break to practise deep breathing and light self-massage on your neck and shoulders. Evening: End your day with a more extended self-massage session, focusing on the entire neck and throat area, and incorporating whole-body stretches. BEST MOMENTS  "The fundamental value of massage is to move people from a sympathetic state to a parasympathetic state." "The benefits of vocal massage are subjective. It usually helps people, but quite what's happening within that is about the person." "Consent and safety are at the heart of manual therapy. The person should have agency over the touch and feel comfortable throughout the session." Purewave Hydrogen unveils Strategic Partnership and Financing to Boost Natural Hydrogen Exploration

Proactive - Interviews for investors

Bruce Nurse of Purewave Hydrogen recently joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss an exciting new collaboration with Robert Price aimed at exploring naturally occurring hydrogen. This initiative has led to a significant partnership with Longhorn Exploration, a company listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange under the symbol LEX. Following this partnership, both Nurse and Price have taken on directorial roles at Longhorn. Purewave, originally a private entity, holds valuable leases that it has optioned to Longhorn, with plans to merge with Longhorn under the new name Pure Hydrogen by early September. To support its ambitious exploration activities, the company has initiated a small financing round. Purewave's exploration strategy uniquely leverages traditional oil and gas methods to identify and produce naturally occurring hydrogen. Their focus is on iron-rich rock formations, with a particular interest in Kansas' Midcontinent Rift, an area renowned for historical hydrogen shows. Recently, the company completed a comprehensive engineering and resource report with Sproule and is currently preparing for an audit. This exploration effort utilizes extensive data from historical wells and state-provided datasets. Nurse emphasized the significant environmental advantages of natural hydrogen, highlighting its potential as a cleaner alternative to manufactured hydrogen variants, which are typically associated with high CO2 emissions and substantial production costs. The company envisions substantial future opportunities in both the US and Canada, driven by growing government support for hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. Furthermore, substantial investments from prominent entities such as Bill Gates' Breakthrough Ventures and United Airlines underscore the vast potential of the hydrogen industry, reinforcing Purewave's optimistic outlook and strategic direction. #proactiveinvestors #tsxv #lex #longhornexploration #purewavehydrogen #LonghornExploration, #NaturalHydrogen, #HydrogenEnergy, #GreenEnergy, #SustainableEnergy, #HydrogenExploration, #MidcontinentRift, #IronRichRocks, #KansasHydrogen, #OilAndGasMethods, #EnergyFuture, #CleanEnergy, #HydrogenProduction, #USGSData, #GovernmentSupport, #HydrogenHubs, #HydrogenInvestment, #RenewableEnergy, #HydrogenSector #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Some of today's top storiesThe state agency in charge of certifying California law enforcement officers met yesterday in West Sacramento to decide the professional future of a former Kern County Sheriff's lieutenant.    David Hubbard, fired in 2022 by the Sheriff's Office and now an employee of the Kern County District Attorney's Office, was facing his permanent decertification as a peace officer.    17's Robert Price was there and attended a hearing of the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST.     He files this report.A salary increase for the Superintendent at Greenfield Union School District is stirring up a heated discussion online. Many say the money should have gone to teachers or even students, instead. At last night's district board meeting, the issue was not a topic of discussion, however, we spoke with those who attended the meeting on both sides of the issue. Superintendent Ramon Hendrix began his post in 2017, after serving on the board of trustees for eight years.     When he took the position, according to Transparent California, Hendrix's first reported salary in 2018 was more than $214,000 with pay and benefits.     That was bumped up to $250,000 a few years later.    Now under the new contract, Hendrix is set to receive around $330,000 with a more than 7,000 dollar increase in each salary tier. On that same salary schedule, a year-round teacher would begin at around $47,000 and continue to move up to around $61,000, seeing a nearly 15-hundred dollar increase each salary tier.Yesterday, protesters and counterprotesters took to the Kern County Superior Court... ahead of a hearing on unionization for farm workers.     The back and forth between UFW and Wonderful has grown messier... but at its core... it's about unionizing and how easy joining one should be.  Last year... California started a new union authorization method called a card check law. If a *majority* of employees sign an authorization card... *all* employees become part of a union. That's why Wonderful Nurseries and the UFW have been clashing now... for months.     The California Agricultural Labor Relations Board authorized UFW to represent Wonderful workers... saying a majority signed on.     But Wonderful and nearly 150 workers allege they were tricked by the UFW into signing a card. Now... Wonderful has filed a lawsuit against the ALRB... challenging the card check law itself. While there was no ruling during yesterday's three-hour hearing... the judge says he'll also decide if the hearings between Wonderful and the UFW continue... while the future of the card check law itself is debated.

Some of today's top storiesA man is in custody this morning after he was involved in a SWAT standoff in East Bakersfield yesterday. This all began around 4 p.m. at Fast Stop Market on Niles and Virginia Streets.     KCSO says the man fled from a stolen vehicle into the convenience store, where he barricaded himself and refused to come out.     Deputies eventually went inside and took the man into custody.     They say a firearm was recovered at the scene. The Kern County Sheriff's Senior Deputy who died Tuesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound has been identified. 36-year-old Benjamin Harmonson was found outside his unmarked patrol vehicle a little before 3 p-m, near a canal north of 7th Standard Road and west of Verdugo Lane.     The discovery prompted a huge law enforcement response, with more than 30 patrol cars and motorcycles from various agencies gathering at the scene, and eventually forming a single file procession to the coroner's office.    Services for Benjamin Harmonson are pending.    With suicide all too common among first responders it's critical that resources are available – and a handful of such resources are right here in Kern County.     17's Robert Price reached out to one such organization. We now know the names of the two people who died in a house fire in Inyokern back in March.  The fire broke out around 3 a-m on March 29th on North Calvert Boulevard near Johnston Avenue.     When the flames were put out, crews found the bodies of 94-year-old Agnes Davis and 53-year-old Lyndel Davis.     The cause of the fire remains under investigation. We're learning more this morning about a deadly motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a local student.     It happened in Ridgecrest Friday on South Sunland Street and East Bowman Road.     Police say the student was riding a motorcycle when he ran a stop sign and hit a car.     He was taken to the hospital where he later died.     The Sierra Sands Unified School District says a crisis team will be available to provide emotional support to those impacted by the death.     The student has not been identified.  New details this morning on the investigation into Kern County Supervisor Zack Scrivner...    It's been a month since allegations of sexual assault against Scrivner emerged... yet he has not been arrested nor charged.    17 News confirming it is still unclear which agency will handle the prosecution. 17 News and other Bakersfield media have previously reported the state Attorney General's Office would be taking over the Scrivner case.    However... in a phone call with 17 News... the AG's Office clarified they're simply reviewing the case right now.    They have not decided whether to take on the prosecution.    The Kern County Sheriff's Office tells us they've completed the investigation and handed over all information to the AG's Office.    Scrivner's whereabouts meantime are still unknown.    He has missed the last two Board of Supervisors meetingsNow to a sad start to the Memorial Day weekend.    Rescue crews have recovered a body in Isabella Lake. According to the Kern County Sheriff's office, a witness called 9-1-1 around 7:30 yesterday evening, to report seeing someone in the water near 'French Gulch' boat launch area. Emergency crews responded and pulled the person out out of the water. Lifesaving measures were performed, but KCSO says the person was pronounced dead at the scene. It's unknown the age or gender of the person and how long he or she had been in the water. The coroner's office will release the name and cause of death at a later date. The water may seem calm...and as the days get warmer...it can be quite inviting.    But...below the surface...the Kern River is really very dangerous. Yesterday ...rescuers updated the number of drownings on the warning sign that sits at the mouth of the canyon off Highway 178.    10 deaths were added to the sign, bringing it to 335 drownings in the Kern River in the past 56 years. The entire community is rooting for that number to stay the same for years to come.    it's up to visitors to be safe around the Kern River.

For the first few years of their training partnership Robert and Luke Price worked individually- Robert at Turpentine Park, a spelling and pre-training property at Cambewarra while Luke was based at the partnership's Kembla stables. Circumstances have changed and the pair now operate in tandem from the racecourse. Rob joins us on the podcast to talk about the reasons for the change of format. Rob talks of his love for the NSW South Coast and the passion for thoroughbreds he and Luke have in common. He sees himself training horses long into the future. The experienced horseman talks of the extensive refurbishments being carried out at Kembla Grange currently. He says trainers are feeling the pressure but are excited about the future facilities. Rob talks of the unique premiership double he and Luke achieved last season. He looks back on an early aspiration to be a jockey and his apprenticeship to Nowra trainer Fred Thomason. Rob says he got as far as the trials, but the scales told him a riding future was off the table. He talks of the interim job he secured while sorting out his future. Rob looks back on the acquisition of his trainer's licence and a low key start in the business. He talks of regular trips to the Berry Showground where he would meet his mentor and his future wife. He and Patricia produced two sons and a daughter who have subsequently provided them with a big team of grand kids. Rob pays tribute to the family. The South Coast horseman looks back on the valuable tutelage given by his late father in law Kevin Robinson. He extols the virtues of an extraordinary trainer. Rob remembers his first win as a trainer at Kembla in 1990, and the lengthy wait before that first elusive city win came along. He pays tribute to a few special horses who helped to get him up and running as a trainer. Rob looks back on the professional riding career of his son and training partner Luke Price. He talks of a nasty accident which halted Luke's riding career in 2002, and the amazing comeback he made a year later. Rob says Luke still enjoys riding trackwork especially when his mount happens to be stable favourite Cuban Royale. The co-trainer pays tribute to bonny mare Jamaea, and reflects on some of her better performances. He talks of her recent sale on the Inglis Digital online auction. Not surprisingly we devote ample time to Rob's reminiscences about the ill fated Count de Rupee- the best horse to pass through the Price stables so far. He comments on the bizarre reality that both Count de Rupee and his Golden Eagle conqueror I'm Thunderstruck are no longer with us. Rob says Count De Rupee's deeds lifted the profile of the Price stable overnight. He makes special mention of the stable “war horse” Cuban Royale who's still going strong as a nine year old. The trainer talks of a recent affiliation with the famous Australian Bloodstock operation. He's optimistic about a Brave Smash two year old he's training for the syndication giant. Rob gives us a “heads up” regarding a couple of unraced I Am Invincible fillies he and Luke are training. He concludes with mention of the instantly recognizable Price stable colours. Some of his owners have taken the white and tartan theme to another level.

Because payroll and benefits represent 80% of a retailer's cost of operations, pricing advantage follows labor productivity. Fewer items result in reduced labor hours throughout all of the product supply channels. Put simply, the cost to deal with 4,500 items is a lot less than the cost to deal with 50,000 items.[50:21] The operating efficiencies of the warehouse concept and the direct delivery of products from the suppliers to Price Club made it possible to sell merchandise for less.[55:00] Costco and Sam's were expanding aggressively while Price Club remained tentative.[1:03:30] Sol was a poster child for the American dream. His immigrant parents were born in a small Russian village. Sol was the first in his family to graduate college. He earned a law degree. He became an exceptionally successful businessman and philanthropist, celebrated 70 years of marriage, was a good father who instilled high values in his sons, and he never walked away from responsibility.
