Before the Fantastic Four (with Galactus) and Superman hit the big screen again, they are on our podcast! We kick things off with Galactus' first 1966 appearance courtesy Stan Lee & Jack Kirby before seeing the giant purple world eater tangle with both the first family of Marvel and the Man of Steel in Dan Jurgens' 1999 outing. We wrap up by pondering Ralph Ineson's upcoming turn as Galactus onscreen and whether the FF and Superman will ever share the screen (or page) together again. Then we turn to Superman / Fantastic Four #1 from 1999 from Dan Jurgens that sees Superman become a herald of Galactus. What if Lois Lane thought Superman abandoned her & hijinks ensued? From Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #30

On this episode, it's Superman's girl friend (two words): Lois Lane! We talk the origins of everyone's favorite "girl reporter" and kick things off with a 1944 story that sees Lois stepping out on her own sans Superman. Then, we zero in on a 1962 issue of Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane that sees the Daily Planet dynamo be "abandoned" by Superman (and face off against an octopus!) and then discover Superman's secret mermaid family on another planet (yep). We wrap up by discussing Lois on screen, why she doesn't have a more regular solo title and what to expect from Rachel Brosnahan's upcoming portrayal. Ep. 152 What if Lois Lane thought Superman abandoned her & hijinks ensued?from Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #30 (DC Comics)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersIt's more silver age silliness! After our recent Jimmy Olsen issue, we are talking about Superman's main squeeze: Lois Lane. We talk her origins from Siegel & Shuster (and Joanne Carter) and then cover an early story from Don Cameron & Ed Dobrotka that sees Lois talk someone off a ledge (literally). We then cover a zany issue of Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane where Lois faces off against gangsters, an opium smuggler and an octopus without the help of Superman (or so she thinks). Plus, lookout for a truly bizarre Krypton cameo! Later in that issue, Lois discovers Superman has a secret mermaid wife and child on another planet but everything might not be what it appears to be in this story from the pencil of iconic Lois Lane artist Kurt Schaffenberger. We wrap up by sharing our love for Margot Kidder, Elizabeth Tulloch, Teri Hatcher and speculate on how Lois will be portrayed in James Gunn's upcoming film. Ready for some silver age silliness? For the first time, we are talking Superman's best pal: Jimmy Olsen! We start with a brief history of the redheaded sidekick, his first "official" appearance back in 1941, and an issue of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen that seems our hero transform into a werewolf, don drag to pretend to be a woman, befriend a leprechaun (that's really Mr. Mxyzptlk) and lots more zany shenanigans. We wrap up by talking about our favorite onscreen Jimmy's and what we want to see next from the character. Ep. 151 What if Jimmy Olsen became a werewolf, a woman and was friends with a leprechaun?from Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #44 (DC Comics)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersGrab your bow ties and sweater vests, it's a deep dive into Jimmy Olsen! We kick off with a look at the origins of the character, from office boy to cub reporter to (eventually) photographer including early appearances in Siegel & Shuster penned issues. Then we jump into the wacky world of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen in a three-part issue that sees Jimmy transform into a wolf-man, go under cover as a chorus girl and battle an inter-dimensional trickster, all set to the terrific art of Curt Swan. We wrap up by discussing Jimmy onscreen from Lois & Clark to My Adventures with Superman and speculate on Skyler Gisondo's take on the character in James Gunn's upcoming film. Ep. 89 What if Superman's rocket from Krypton landed in Gotham and he became Bruce Wayne aka Batman?Earth of an unknown designation (DC Comics) as seen in Superman: Speeding Bullets #1We return to the world of DC Comic's Elseworld's by covering the first ever Superman centered Elseworlds, Superman: Speeding Bullets by J.M. DC Comics Superman and the Authority #1 review

Talk Nerdy to Me

I am not a big fan of boy scout type characters, so Superman is not one of my favorites. That may change now that Grant Morrison is taking him in a different direction. I can't wait to see how Superman operates in the gray areas of morality. Publisher Description (W) Grant Morrison (A) Mikel Janin (CA) Bryan Hitch Sometimes even Superman finds a task almost impossible. Sometimes even the Last Son of Krypton needs to enlist help. Some tasks require methods and heroes that don't scream Justice League. So Clark Kent, the Metropolis Marvel, seeks out Manchester Black, the most dastardly of rogues, to form an all-new Authority tasked with taking care of some business on the sly. Not only will Black know the right candidates for the team, but if Superman can make him behave himself and act in service of the greater good, then he'll prove literally anyone can be a hero! They'll have to move quickly, however, as the Ultra-Humanite forms his own team to take out the Man of Steel. This new limited series helps launch an all-new Superman status quo, setting up story elements that reverberate across both Action Comics and Superman: Son of Kal-El in the months to come. And not only is Superman putting together a superstar team, but it takes superstars to tell the tale: Grant Morrison (The Green Lantern, All-Star Superman) and Mikel Janin (Batman, Future State: Superman: Worlds of War)! [rating:4/5] MAJOR SPOILERS POLL OF THE WEEK This week, we are pitting writer/artists against one another.  It’s fairly simple – of the two writer/artists presented, which could run circles around the other? Neal Adams (born June 12, 1941) is an American comic book and commercial artist known for helping to create some of the definitive modern imagery of the DC Comics characters Superman, Batman, and Green Arrow; as the co-founder of the graphic design studio Continuity Associates; and as a creators-rights advocate who helped secure a pension and recognition for Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Adams was inducted into the Eisner Award’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999. John Lindley Byrne (born July 6, 1950) is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero. Byrne’s better-known work has been on Marvel Comics’ X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing. CREATE! Artist: Lan Medina When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White’s party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown’s sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose’s ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.
