One of the unique attributes of the 2009 US Men's National Team that beat Spain in the Confederations Cup was the dynamic makeup of the roster. From established stars like Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, to young emerging talent like Jozy Altidore, as well as young talents like Jonathan Bornstein. But once player's story became well known because of its unlikelihood. Jay DeMerit was a starting center back for that team after working his way into England's top flight as part of Watford. However, he only played for Watford because Major League Soccer passed on him, he took a chance on himself and moved to England with few resources and a big dream. DeMerit joined Founding Futbol to talk about the 2009 Confederations Cup win over Spain, his path to the Premier League with Watford and how that helped him land a spot on the USMNT. DeMerit also shares his current endeavor -- RISExSHINE -- and why he is passionate about helping harness the reality of a device-driven world to help our youth become well rounded individuals through development multiple forms of intelligence. There are currently some 13000 players in the youth system of English premier league clubs. Of these 13000 players – the best youth players in the country - less than 1% - way less - will ever see the field for a premier league side.  Now if you adjust those odds for a 23 year old American – who plays in the English 9th division – who has to work odd jobs to make ends meet – well the odds – they become much longer than 1%.  But that is what Jay Demerit did – he began his professional career in England playing at parks for no pay and within 2 years he was playing at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 people. He went from guarding guys who would have beers at halftime, to guarding Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford.  His story is truly remarkable and as far as American soccer careers go – there are few that are more screenplay worthy than Jay Demerits. I hope you enjoy him as he lays it out for us on the soccerPod – Enjoy! Thanks for listening! Are you ready to Rise and Shine!?  This week's guest sure knows how to exactly that as we welcome 2010 USMNT World Cup Veteran Jay DeMerit to the podcast to discuss his career! There was a documentary made about Jay's career called 'Rise and Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story'. It chronicles his life and career showing how, through hard work and effort, Jay was able to work his way up the English Football pyramid to captain Watford in the English Premier League AND become one of the starting centerbacks for the United States in the 2010 World Cup! It's an incredible story and Jay was an absolute delight to have on the podcast, enjoy! About Jay DeMerit Jay DeMerit's story reads like those of many American players who tried to launch a professional career between the end of the North American Soccer League and the beginning of Major League Soccer. DeMerit took his game to England. After several tryouts and time spent playing park and pub soccer, DeMerit got his shot and ended up playing in the Premier League. Just one difference, DeMerit's story starts in 2003. A successful college player, DeMerit couldn't catch on with any MLS club, spending a year with the Chicago Fire reserves. Holding a European passport, he decided to move to England and try there. As decisions go…. A 2004 training game against Watford got him a contract and the next season he was crucial to the squad that won promotion to the Premier League. By 2007, he was on the USMNT and made the 2010 World Cup squad. DeMerit left Watford at the end of the 2010 season, signing with 2011 MLS expansion club Vancouver. In the Fall of 2011, a movie about DeMerit's move to England and eventual rise to prominence as a Premier League player was released. Titled Rise & Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story, the movie was partially funded by fans through a Kickstarter campaign. Jay DeMerit announced his retirement on July 24, 2014. He finished his Vancouver Whitecaps tenure with 70 appearances and one goal. Make sure to check out the NEW Dtalkspodcast.com website! Thanks to Empire Toys for this episode of the podcast! Jay DeMerit was not a household name in American soccer when he first started his professional playing career. As a matter of fact, he was not even drafted or signed by any Major League Soccer clubs following his graduation from college in 2001. When most athletes would have called it quits, DeMerit doubled-down on his professional soccer aspirations and moved to England in an attempt to find a club to play for. Despite this uncommon approach to becoming a professional athlete, DeMerit found his way onto a club in the ninth tier of English soccer. From Southall, DeMerit underwent a meteoric rise through the ranks of English Soccer, eventually finding himself with Watford. On May 21, 2006, in the play-off final, DeMerit headed in the game's first goal and was named Man of the Match as Watford gained promotion to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United 3–0. DeMerit not only achieved his dream of playing in the Premier League, he went on to cap for the USMNT 25 times, including a CONCACAF Gold Cup win and appearances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2011, DeMerit was also the first player signed by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC for their entrance in MLS, where he played four seasons. This non-traditional journey of professional success now fuels DeMerit off the pitch as the founder of Rise + Shine; a masterclass-type platform catered towards Gen Z.
