Steve Wood, Ph.D. talks about seeing more and more examples of witnesses who are fighting with opposing counsel in their deposition or at trial, motivated by a desire to get their story across. Steve covers several reasons why pivoting like this is a bad idea including: arguing with a professional arguer is foolish; jurors view witnesses who pivot or argue with opposing counsel as less credible; the questioning attorney will call the witness out on this move; most witnesses aren't experienced enough to be selective about when to fight and when not to fight, leading to potential pitfalls. Steve highlights that witnesses need to own bad facts and move on. A fact is a fact. Witnesses and their attorneys need to develop a trust and attorneys should share their strategy on how they plan to get the witness's perspectives across to the jury without the witness having to pivot to get their points out. If I'm too hard on them and they hate it and they don't like it, they leave. My job is to make sure that I teach them jiu-jitsu but I make sure they have enough fun that they want to stay in jiu-jitsu until they're 16.When they're 16 they get graded as an adult, they start learning as an adult. It's a little bit different. They get to make their own choices. But if I can make them enjoy it that much that they stay from the age of four until 16, then I've now got a long-term member, I've got a kid that's done jiu-jitsu for 12 years that's now going to get a blue belt and go on to be a great adult addition to my gym.GEORGE: Good day. George Fourie here. Welcome to the Martial Arts Media™ Business Podcast. Today I'm joined by a professional MMA fighter, UFC Fighter, and owner of Base Training Centre in Brisbane, Damien Brown. Welcome to the show.DAMIEN: Hey, man. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it.GEORGE: Good stuff. You've had a complete career between martial arts and your business. But before we get into the good stuff, a question I always like to ask upfront is, what's been your go-to marketing strategy, the thing that you guys do that generates the most students for you on a consistent basis? Consistently or that one thing that's the hook.DAMIEN: Typically, the greatest marketing strategy we had was Facebook Ads. Social media is so big now. If you're not using it then you, you're either behind the times or you're just too stubborn to do it. Potentially, you don't know what you're doing so you outsource it. I'm a massive believer in outsourcing anything that's not your line of expertise. I just think that everyone should be advertising on social media.

When we start the process of becoming a business owner, it can be unexpected what's to come. It takes a certain kind of person that's willing to devote their free time, and sacrifice time with family to become successful and achieve the vision they set. Mike Trinh is a monster when it comes to being an entrepreneur- He is an example of what hard work is. Mike Trinh is a Former UFC & Bellator Fighter, Serial Entrepreneur, Gator Wrestler, Restaurant owner, and Food Truck owner. Based out of Houston Mike started his business by selling shrimp out of the back of his truck off highway 6 in Houston, TX while fighting at the same time. Patrick does his first-ever eat-in episode as he travels to Mike's Seafoods to get a great bite to eat and interview his special guest, Mike Trinh. Mike addresses that his journey was not all successful. It took sacrifice and long nights of wondering about the unknown. After talking about how he started his business Mike and Patrick discuss the different trends that are always changing in the seafood industry and what values Mike sticks with to stand out and make his customers happy. What You'll Learn: The process of going from Professional Fighter to Business Owner What Mike did to manage his fighting career and business at the same time What it takes to start your own restaurant Knowing the constant trends in the food industry and adapting to them How Mike set his food truck up with the help of some family members Connect with Mike: Instagram Mikes Seafood Mikes Seafood locations: Houston-Highway 6 9449 S Texas 6, Houston, TX 77083 (281) 879-8500 Cypress 20320 FM529, Cypress, TX 77433 (281) 815-3017 How to Get Involved: Patrick Bolanos is a serial entrepreneur, business owner, and CEO of Trailer King Builders in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Nicaragua, exposed to extreme poverty, and also had the fortune of being exposed to life in the United States traveling back and forth to both countries. After college, Patrick's career took him into the corporate world of banking where he learned the important lessons of understanding what you're selling and why it's important to believe in it. Back in December of 2017, Patrick was fired from his job as a CFO for a Restaurant Group. With only $500 to his name, rent due, his wife, 3 children at home, and one on the way, he was forced to figure out how to pull his family out of this financial abyss that was strangling his life. With no knowledge of how to build a trailer, Patrick simply figured all of it out and has now built it into the thriving empire of what's now become Trailer King Builders. This show highlights the failures, successes, lessons, and insights of Patrick and his guests. Bring your notepads and pens. You're in for a real-life education. Lawrence has spent the last 19 years calling Chicago home, after extensive work experience as a fixed-income derivatives trader, first in London and Amsterdam, then on Wall Street, before finally settling at The Chicago Board of Trade, and starting his own Trading Company. As Lawrence always welcomes opportunities to re-invent himself, he placed his entire focus and commitment to real estate, after he began investing in multi-units properties in 2009, and later becoming a full time broker in 2014. He owns a vast and diversified portfolio of commercial and residential investment properties, of which he adds to at every opportunity. His dignified professionalism, deep knowledge base and focus on relationship building has earned him the title of “Top 1%” Agent in Chicago, along with being highest producer at his company, for six consecutive years. He has appeared on numerous Podcasts, including co-founding “The Off-Market Show”, as well as “Keeping it Real”, “AE Wheelhouse” and WGN Radio Show talking about various aspects of real estate investment strategies. Lawrence specializes in finding the best turn-key and cash flow positive buildings for his large network of buyers. “I simply love working with investors to create for them solid double-digit, property-backed investment returns from all types of multi-unit buildings,” he explains. “Once you understand the nuances of the business model, I truly know of no other vehicle to create such high investment yields. Furthermore, this is with a quarter of the volatility that we have seen with equities in the last forty years. Add in the appreciation, leverage and tax benefits and it remains the surest way to grow your underlying wealth.” Outside of real estate Lawrence remains an avid reader on his quest of constant self-improvement. Lawrence was a former professional athlete and Chicago Golden Gloves boxing champion, and now competes around the world as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and has ran marathons on 6 of 7 continents (Antarctica marathon is scheduled for December 2022!) He started his “Enter the Lionheart” which is about his mutual interests of excellence, athletics and entrepreneurship.
