Send us a textIn Episode 280, I converse with Peter Doggers, Director of Content at Chess.com. Peter is one of the world's biggest experts on the world of chess, having written about the game for almost two decades. He recently wrote a book The Chess Revolution: From the Ancient World to the Digital Age, in which he explores chess as a cultural phenomenon from its earliest beginnings in ancient India to its biggest stars and most dramatic moments to the impact of the internet and AI.We speak about the Chess Museum in Amsterdam, journalism, our 91st Podcast Guest Judit Starzay's tournament at the Annual Chess.com meet up, the Carlsen- Niemann drama, Fischer Random/Freestyle chess, thoughts on the Liren-Gukesh World Championship match, mindset and more.
A Note from James:"Over a billion people play chess. Even if you're not into it, think about this: two armies on a board, going to war. It's the game of kings, and back in the day, kings played chess to strategize without any bloodshed. Although, if you've ever lost a chess game, you might feel like someone just wiped you off the board. I've been there-sitting for hours, putting your whole brain into it, and then losing. It feels like death. People cry. I've cried. But here's the thing: it's also the safest way to practice losing and bouncing back in life. That's why chess is part of our culture-from TV shows like The Queen's Gambit to the background of every smart character in movies. Chess has helped me in ways I can't even measure. It got me into college, helped me land jobs, and taught me how to deal with failure. In this episode, I sat down with Peter Doggers, an incredible chess journalist and author of The Chess Revolution. We talked about how chess is taking the world by storm, why it matters so much today, and what makes it more than just a game. If you play chess, know someone who does, or even just want to understand the cultural and intellectual explosion of chess right now, this conversation is for you. Let's get into it."Episode Description:Chess isn't just a game-it's a cultural revolution. In this episode, James talks with Peter Doggers, chess journalist and author of The Chess Revolution, about the global chess boom, AI's role in shaping modern chess, and why the game has captivated everyone from kids to CEOs. They discuss everything from the addictive nature of chess to its impact on careers, mental resilience, and even Hollywood. Whether you're a grandmaster or a beginner, this conversation uncovers why chess is more relevant than ever. What You'll Learn:How The Queen's Gambit and the pandemic reignited global interest in chess. The role of AI in transforming the way chess is played and understood. Why losing in chess feels so personal-and what it teaches about resilience. The ongoing battle against cheating in chess and the challenges of AI-driven deception. How chess can boost your career and cultural standing.Timestamped Chapters:[01:30] The cultural explosion of chess.[03:08] The addictive nature of the game.[05:47] Meeting Peter Doggers: From journalist to chess master.[10:20] AI and the future of chess.[17:28] The drama and history of chess rivalries.[22:15] Why chess players keep coming back for more.[30:50] Can adults still improve at chess?[40:47] The impact of streamers on chess popularity.Additional Resources:Peter Doggers' book: The Chess Revolution: Understanding the Power of an Ancient Game in the Digital AgePeter Doggers' Web Site ------------What do YOU think of the show? Peter Doggers is an award-winning chess journalist who is currently the director of News and Events at Chess.com. His role has given him a ringside seat to modern chess history, as he has attended many of the world's top events, and interviewed the likes of GM Garry Kasparov, Hikaru Nakamura, and countless others. Peter's new book, The Chess Revolution: From the Ancient World to the Digital Age covers everything from the beginnings of chess, to its many representations in pop culture, to the explosion in popularity the game has experienced in the internet age. Peter's excellent book covers chess from all angles, so we zeroed in on a few of my favorite topics from the book including: the history of chess and computers, recent stories around chess cheating, and their implications for the future of chess, the rise of Chess.com, and the story behind the making of Peter's book. POV: You're about to hop on a 12-hour flight, are you picking your favourite movie? Maybe you're reading up on the in-flight meal service. Or maybe... you're staring at the back of the seat in front of you. There's a relatively new trend of raw dogging your flight, where people basically just sit and stare into space until the end of their travels. That can't be good for you...right? We're asking an expert about what happens to the body on those extra long travel days. So if you're staring down the barrel of a long haul flight for Euro summer... listen to this first.
In 1964, the artist Andy Warhol created the avant-garde film ‘Sleep'. It came in at 5 hours 20 minutes, and consisted entirely of footage of poet John Giorno sleeping. Later that same year, Warhol would go further and make the film ‘Empire', which consisted entirely of slow motion footage of the same view of the Empire State Building, and came in at 8 hours 5 minutes. Both of these films were more exciting than St Johnstone v St Mirren on Saturday. However, worry not, because Sam and Dan have got your back, and we're going to bring some good time entertainment in Episode 38 of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial St. Johnstone Podcast! We take a very, very quick look on Saturday's draw against the men from Paisley, with particular reference to Shaun Rooney's wild 45, which was genuinely about as exciting as it got. Alas, we don't even have a guest to cheer you up this week, but so you don't have to listen to us talk about that game for any longer than necessary, we take a walk down memory lane with some clips of some of our favourite interview moments from the first 37 episodes. Fear not though my sweet, sweet friends, we've got features by the bucketload for you this week, with a trip to the Royal revealing what you can do when you're having a tinkle next to a Saints legend, or indeed a Scottish singing sensation. We also head over to the Club Shop of Shame to discuss why Benfica deserve their European curse, we go all Tennis the Menace in this week's Theme Team and a welcome return of Doggers on Tour take us to the chilly north for a wee Finnish double-dunter. Scooter Gran! Sex Tips with Lynne Hoggan! Fat lads from Idaho posing as hot girls on Facebook! We've (somehow) got all of this and much, much more. So put your feet up, and let the boys treat you to a damn good time. Get there!
“Take me away, I don't mind, but you better promise me I'll be back in time!” The wise old words of Huey Lewis, and indeed The News, and you can join Sam and Dan as they go back in time - it's Retro Week here at Dogger Towers, so join us for Episode 34 of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial St. Johnstone Podcast! We know how much you love the features, so we're going to give you all of the features this week! A trip to the Royal sees us hit up Dan's home town and a marginally more popular Scottish Football Podcast than ours, conjuring up a repressed childhood banter for Dan and some repeater I've parenting for Sam. And on the theme of the seaside, we head over to Bavaria for an absolute shop window item in the Club Shop of Shame. The return of Doggers on Tour sees is head over to the World Cup via Trinidad and Tobago, Theme Team takes us back to the glorious decade which brought us Back to the Future and we FINALLY reveal a Saints Story which Dan has been sitting on for six months, and might very well prove to be a crushing disappointment, and Wholesome Content Corner takes us back to the glory days of 2020-21. We do actually talk about Saints at various points too, as we discuss the upcoming fixture against Livingston and discuss Liam ‘The Prince of Perth' Gordon's new contract. With all this and much more, including a direction of the chilling damage done by 90s televisual light entertainment, you don't want to miss this! Get there!

We like many things, primarily the 90s. You know a new thing we like? Punting Rangers right out of the cup, and we reckon you'll like that too, so why not join Sam and Dan to hear all about it on Episode 14 of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial St Johnstone Podcast! The lads try and work out what in the world happened at Ibrox, and look forward to what this means for the season going forward. We also have a look at the first ridiculous part of a ridiculous double header, which will forever be known as Euan Anderson's mad hour and a half. And that's just for starters. We have a catch up with 2014 Scottish Cup hero James Dunne to discuss his short-lived spell at Saints, on and off pitch pals in Perth, and THOSE days at Ibrox and Parkhead. More you say? Why not! We take a trip to see George in The Royal for a 90s extravaganza, hear more from Brogan The Beagle about jamming with Saintees, and take a trip behind the iron curtain for a very special Doggers on Tour. With a look ahead to the Hibs game, Monday's cup draw and plenty more, why not keep the good feeling going with Episode 14 of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial St Johnstone Podcast. The podcast unsuitable for goalkeepers who don't come up for corners. This weeks Episode is supported by the fine folk at Flonix LTD
Saints lose? Believe it or not it happened, but we don't let a little thing like that stop us, as we march fearlessly on into episode 12 of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial St. Johnstone Podcast! In addition to dissecting Saturday's defeat at home to Aberdeen and catch up with legendary Saints centre-half Alan Kernaghan to discuss heading north to play for Saints, heady days turning out for the Republic of Ireland under Big Jack and Paul Sturrock's motivational techniques. You want more? Of course you do! We have more by the barrel load as we unveil our new feature ‘Wholesome Content Corner' because, let's face it, we all need a little wholesomeness right now, and a bumper trip to see George in The Royal in which we very much jump the 90s shark. After a week staying at home we grab our passports and head of to Canada (nope, not for who you think) in the return of ‘Doggers on Tour' and make a truly farcical stop off at the Club Shop of Shame. With Saints chat revolving around changes at the top and potential transfers, plus a look forward to next weeks cup tie against Clyde, and much more, let Sam and Dan get your week off to a flyer with episode 12 of The Dogger Saints Podcast! This episode is dedicated to our friend Fred. We're going to miss you, mate.
In this weeks episode of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial Podcast of the BLOODY LEAGUE CUP WINNERS St. Johnstone, Sam and Dan chat to former England Under-21 international, Saints hero and all round good guy Michael Duberry about his time north of the border. The lads also discuss whether Steve Clarke should be taking a look at Shaun Rooney the campaign for Nick Dasovic to enter the Saints Hall of Fame begins in earnest and our weekly Saints Story looks at what happens when the Sunday League ringer is taken to the extreme. This bumper episode sees us delve further into the belly of the shit merch beast, join George for our weekly refreshment in The Royal, and take a trip to Sweden for a ‘Doggers on Tour' section which mainly confirmed that Dan has never met anybody from Sweden. Forthcoming fixtures against Accies and Hibs are looked forward to and, oh, we may even talk a little bit about a little game that took place on Sunday... Join the lads for this weeks episode, and keep the celebrations going.
‘In the first part of our League Cup Final Special, Sam and Dan catch up with Saints legend Chris Millar to discuss his time in Perth and memories of the 2014 Scottish Cup win. The boys also cover Saturday's resounding win away at Motherwell and dissect the weird and sometimes terrifying world of football merchandise. Regular features 'O'Boyle in The Royal', ‘Doggers on Tour' and ‘Saints Stories' take us to Tillicoultry, Superdrug, Bosnia and Mill Street, and we look at just how Guy Melamed ascended to the throne of Perth. Tune in, and let Sam and Dan get your cup final week off to a flyer.
‘By (presumably) popular demand Sam and Dan return for Episode 3. Richard Foster joins the lads to discuss his time at Saints, storms in teacups and football furlough. Also featuring a special interview with Perth's own Scarlet Skyler Rae to discuss the soon to be smash hit ‘Come On You Saints', along with regular features ‘O'Boyle in The Royal', ‘Saints Stories' and a special ‘Doggers on Tour' where we contemplate what in the world Gregory Tade is playing at. With the lads also discussing the Celtic defeat, the upcoming Motherwell game, Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright, and the present Pay Per View situation, Episode 3 of Dogger Saints: An Unofficial St. Johnstone Podcast is a must hear for all Saints fans and beyond.'
Welcome to the inaugural (in-DOG-ural?) Episode of Dogger Saints: Unofficial St Johnstone podcast. In this episode Sam and Danny chat exclusively to Ex-Saintee Kieran Mcanespie about his time with Saints and forging autographs for other players! On this episode, we tackle the military-industrial complex and explore why defense gets so deeply embedded in supposedly liberal peacenik states like CT and how easy it is to get not one, but two nuclear submarines. Our contribution to the nuclear arms race even has a tourist site in CT. We also take a look at whether muskets are the best line of home defense, whether the future is more steampunk than previously imagined, and who should be the soldiers of the future.
This week on the pod, the boys have Chris Landry on to talk Big 3 Football. They also break down the Culture Project, give some Life Advice, and discuss some other shenanigans.
