Nikolaos Ntirlis is a Correspondence chess champion, and computer engineer who has become well known in the chess world for his vast opening expertise. Nikolaos is quite skilled at finding original opening ideas, and has grown popular through his books, and by highlighting new opening ideas on his Twitter/X account. The ideas Nikos suggests have often seen quick adoption by Grandmasters, and he has even seen moves he highlighted subsequently appear in the games of Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Girl. In fact, GM Giri wrote the Foreword to Nicolaos' newest book, the excellent  Reimagining 1. E4. The book offers new ideas for White across many defenses to 1. E4, and explains opening concepts clearly without bombarding you with opening theory. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of Nikolaos' opening enthusiasm, how best to use engines, as well as which defenses to 1.e4 were most challenging to combat theoretically. Nikolaos is also an accomplished chess trainer who hasworked with the national team of Denmark. In our conversation, he offered some helpful chess improvement advice with a philosophical bent. Lastly, we discussed some of  Nicolaos' other interests including correspondence chess, chess books, and martial arts. Timestamps of topics discussed are below.  0:02- What is the origin of Nikos' popular Twitter threads, where he suggests lines that have been used by GMs like Nakamura, Carlsen, and others? Mentioned: Nikolaos' X account here: https://x.com/NikolaosNtirlis/status/1852645135487558104 10:00- Was there any defense against 1. E4 where it was particularly challenging to find fresh ideas? 14:30- What rating range is this book best suited for?  16:00- Does Nikos agree that one should learn opening ideas, rather than openings?  Mentioned: Nikos' interview with Charlyze van Zyl for Forward Chess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyanVxu48lk 18:30- Patreon mailbag question: What did Nikos discover about an original line that Niemann played against Kramnik?  Mentioned Han Schut's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/hanschut Read the Twitter thread in question: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1841408942737420435.html 19:00- Who are Nikos' favorite opening theoreticians?  25:00- What is Nikos' advice for how amateurs should use engines?  32:00- Are there any underappreciated openings?  33:00- Nikos' overall chess improvement advice 34:00- Where did Nikos' love for openings start? The Adult Improver Series of Perpetual Chess returns, as I am joined by Solveig Friberg, who streams on Twitch as “The Rookie Redhead.” Solveig is a relatively new chess player who discovered the game via a Norwegian national TV broadcast of one of Magnus Carlsen's World Championship matches. A few years later, she has attained a rating of 1570 FIDE, built a large online audience, published her first Chessable course (Breaking 1000)  as a Twitch streamer, and has even had the opportunity to interview players like Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana. We begin our conversation by discussing the unique popularity of chess in Norway- it is very popular as a spectator sport, but that has not translated into a thriving competitive chess scene. Why might that be? We also discuss Solveig's own chess journey.  Solveig shares a lot of study recommendations and core beliefs based on her experience as a chess player and her professional background as an educator. Solveig is a particularly firm believer in the importance of finding a community, and did not see her chess take off until she found online “chess people.” Solveig is an inspiration for anyone who is coming to chess as a working adult with a busy life.  Thanks to our sponsors Chessable.com- in addition to Solveig's course, be sure to check out GM Sam Shankland's latest, and if you sign up for Chessable Pro, please use the link below. https://www.chessable.com/pro/?utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=benjohnson&utm_campaign=pro 2:00- Solveig got into chess by watching coverage of the Magnus-Nepo match on national TV in Norway. A Note from James:Today, we have a fascinating story of resilience, transformation, and triumph. Imagine being the second-best player in the world in your field, only to see your ranking plummet over the years. Hikaru Nakamura experienced just that in the world of chess. Once the number two player globally, he saw his ranking drop below the top 20. But Hikaru didn't let this define him. During the pandemic, he started streaming chess online, building a massive audience and diversifying his interests. And remarkably, he climbed back to number two in the world. How did he do it? What changes in mindset and strategy led to this incredible comeback? We'll cover all this and more in our discussion today. This conversation is not just for chess enthusiasts but for anyone looking to succeed and find balance in life. So, here is Hikaru Nakamura."Episode Description:In this episode of The James Altucher Show, James talks with Hikaru Nakamura about his extraordinary journey in the world of chess. Talking about the increase in Haj quota, he also mentioned that he requested the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia to increase the Haj quota for the “Muslim brothers and sisters”. The PM also accused the Congress and Samajwadi Party of practising “appeasement politics” and “never doing anything for the political, social and economic upliftment of Muslims”.Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today wrote to Tihar Jail authorities alleging that he was not being administered insulin despite flagging his peaking sugar levels. He accused the prison authorities of lying over the issue under “political pressure”. Referring to newspaper reports, the AAP national convenor wrote he was “pained” that the prison authorities had made “false and misleading statements” regarding his health.A division bench of the Calcutta High Court on Monday cancelled the illegal recruitment of 23,753 teachers and non-teaching staff by the 2016 School Service Commission , ordering them to return their salaries with interest. The court also ordered fresh recruitment against the posts within 15 days. Terming the verdict “illegal”, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vowed to appeal against it. The bench observed that the OMR sheets of Group C, Group D, Class IX and X were manipulated in 2016, making all the recruitments illegal.Congress President Mallikarjuna Kharge while speaking at The Indian Express Idea Exchange said that Narendra Modi is the first PM who exaggerates so much. Stating that INDIA alliance will come back with strong numbers and defeat the BJP, Kharge added that it's not the Opposition but the people who want change. He said, quote, "The BJP's nervousness is evident from the fact that its leaders are campaigning intensely in every gully compared to the past when they would hold just two or three meetings in a district. Modiji is nervous himself." Unquote.D Gukesh, the 17-year-old from Chennai who was the second youngest player ever to compete at the prestigious Candidates tournament, has become the youngest ever winner of the event. It will also make him the youngest ever to compete at the World Chess Championship. This comes after his draw against Hikaru Nakamura in the final round of the Candidates chess tournament.  He became India's youngest grandmaster ever at the age of 12 years, seven months, 17 days and overhauled the five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand as the country's top ranked player for the first time after 36 years last year. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

Yet, the game has also been rocked by prominent cheating scandals - aided by the very technologies that have helped chess grow more popular. This panel brings together some of the biggest names in the game including Danny Rensch, Jennifer Shahade, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Daryl Morey to discuss the current state of chess, techniques to detect cheating, and how chess can continue to leverage technology to grow the game all while keeping competition fair, fun, and entertaining. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On Board Vision, Hollow Words, and the End of the World, published by Marcello on February 17, 2023 on LessWrong. Note: this is a repost of a Facebook post I made back in December 2022 (plus some formatting). I'm putting it up here to make it easier to link to and because it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to show it to the LW audience specifically. Board Vision As impressive as ChatGPT is on some axes, you shouldn't rely too hard on it for certain things because it's bad at what I'm going to call "board vision" (a term I'm borrowing from chess). This generalized "board vision" is the ability to concretely model or visualize the state of things (or how it might change depending on one's actions) like one might while playing a chess game. I tested ChatGPT's board vision in chess itself. I gave it the names of two of the world's most famous players and the first move to get it into the "mindset" of "give me an actual game record and not commentary". Hypothetically if Garry Kasparov and Hikaru Nakamura played a chess game. 1. e4 e5 I got a fairly normal looking opening, right until move 10 when black blithely hangs a bishop (10. ... Bg4) which could easily be captured by the pawn on h3. The game continues with both players ignoring the hanging bishop until move 14 ... f5 when I stopped my play-through because the move was illegal (black would be putting himself in check). You can see the legal prefix of the game in a chess.com viewer and the entire (corrupted) PGN here (see Appendix) if you're curious. So yeah, good job on memorizing part of an opening book, ChatGPT, but you have terrible board vision. Hollow Words about the End of the World In more detail, what I think is going on here is that the outputs of large language models are hollow words which aren't backed by any picture of the world, except insofar as they can borrow such a picture through the patterns in the linguistic training corpus. Incidentally, this is my sense as to why the "let's think things through step by step" prompting tactic often works so well; it steers the large language model into a region of language-style-space which contains more detailed descriptions of the problem-relevant facts. For chess (and especially for a form as dense as a raw move record) that structure isn't cleanly reflected in language, so ChatGPT seems fairly blind. Humans can also sometimes have bad board vision, especially when it comes to thinking about the end of the world. To illustrate the sort of error I mean, here's a darkly hilarious writing mistake I caught ChatGPT making. It's subtle and shows up in the last paragraph of this short story I told it to generate. See if you can notice it. My prompt was "Write a story where a goose tries and fails to prevent the end of the world". So without further ado: Once upon a time, in a small pond nestled in the forest, a curious goose named Harold lived with his family. Harold was a bit of an odd duck - no pun intended - and was always getting into trouble with his siblings. One day, Harold overheard the older geese talking about the end of the world. They spoke of a great darkness that would engulf the earth, wiping out all life in its path. Harold didn't want to believe it, but he couldn't shake the feeling of fear that settled in his chest. He knew he had to do something to prevent this terrible fate. So, he set out on a journey to find the source of the darkness and put a stop to it. He flew for days, facing many challenges along the way, but he never gave up. Finally, he reached the edge of the world and saw the great darkness looming ahead. He tried to stop it with all his might, but it was too powerful. The darkness consumed him and the world came to an end. But even in the face of defeat, Harold remained brave and valiant. His bravery and determination wil...

GM Srinath has worked with many of India's brightest young talents including, GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Nihail Sarin. I caught Arjun at an interesting time, as both Arjun and Nihail had just won events in the Tata Steel India tournaments. What does it feel like when your longtime students are suddenly outperforming world elites like Hikaru Nakamura and Wesley So? How does Srinath adjust the training plans of his students as they go from 2500 to 2700? We also talked about openings, as Srinath has co-authored (with GM Sahaj Grover) standout Chessable courses on The London System and the Catalan. We also discussed chess improvement, engine use, and we got Srinath's take on the Carlsen/Niemann saga. You can find timestamps for topics discussed below.  0:00- What has surprised Srinath about the rise of his students, GMs Arjun Erigaisi and GM Nihail Sarin?  Mentioned: Srinath's Recent interview with IM Sagar Shah of Chessbase India'  15:00- GM Erigaisi unleashed some epic opening preparation in a game against Sarin in their recent Tata Steel India Tournament. The Champions Chess Tour finished this week. Although the youngsters like Xiong, Erigaisi and Sevian put in strong performances, Levon Aronian won the final in style. Olympiad talk this week involves a famous cheating scandal that may or not have involved the French team. The Grand Chess Tour in Zagreb is up next, with Magnus Carlsen playing and Jan talking about it. He'll be joined by 1 Lawrence and 1 Laurent (no Peters). Biel continues with Gukesh becoming the 3rd or 4th (who knows?) youngest 2700 player. Dortmund also began this week and Jan is not happy with it! The chicken's pre-tournament predictions came under fire from Hikaru Nakamura - will they hit back?! Lots of FIDE talk. Questions from you people were answered!
