The Adult Improver series returns to look at both the macro and the micro of adult chess improvement. My guest is NM Todd Bryant. Todd is a software engineer (for Chess.com) and an accomplished player, who has used his analytical skills to gather lots of data about the most accomplished adult improvers in recent US Chess History. Todd shares information about the standout improvement cases at different age ranges. What would be considered an exceptional rating gain for someone over the age of 30? What about age 50? What patterns does Todd notice in looking at the rating graphs of these accomplished amateur? In addition to sharing all of this data that Todd has dutifully gathered, he discusses his own improvement philosophy. Todd plays frequently OTB, and when at home he emphasizes opening study and frequent speed chess play. This approach has been working for Todd as he recently passed 2500 Blitz on Chess.com for the first time! This was a fascinating conversation, and I really appreciate Todd's gathering and sharing all of this interesting data! Timestamps of the topics discussed are below. For decades, American policymakers have come to view the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as an indispensable ally in the Middle East, committing billions of taxpayer dollars to support Jordan's budget, economy, and military. Indeed, Jordan's Peace Treaty with Israel; its strategic position between Israel, Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia; and its pro-American military and intelligence services remain critical to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. And yet, challenges inside this relationship are reaching alarming levels. From harboring one of the FBI's most wanted terrorists and inciting violence against Israel, to a member of its parliament facing charges for trafficking guns and gold into Israel, Jordan's recent behavior has U.S. policymakers considering their options. Filling in for host Cliff May is Rich Goldberg, senior advisor at FDD. To discuss U.S.-Jordan relations, he's joined by FDD Senior Vice President for Research Jonathan Schanzer and Joe Truzman, research analyst at FDD's Long War Journal.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Bert. He's an adult improver trying to juggle parenthood and a career with chess. We spoke extensively about how he uses data analysis to improve his study plans and opening choices. We talked about his choice of the King's Gambit as a means of maximizing fun and results at his rating level. Bert talked about his study plan and how coaches have impacted his training. We also discussed his fear of playing kids in tournaments. Are they all underrated masters in waiting or do some just hang pieces like other players rated under 1000? After LeBron James and the Lakers made it through the NBA's Play-In Tournament, the defending champions took one on the chin in their playoff opener against Phoenix. Jovan Buha, who covers the team for The Athletic (as well as co-hosts The Forum Club podcast) breaks down where the team struggled versus the Suns and what adjustments the team needs to make so they can advance in the playoffs (one key: Anthony Davis needs to play better). Buha also tells our hosts Otto Strong and Aaron Berlin how cap space and luxury tax issues could effect the team's decisions in the off season, especially in considering their own free agents like Alex Caruso, Montrezl Harrell and Dennis Schroeder. Finally, Aaron & Otto give us both their initial reaction to the opening of the playoffs as well as their thoughts on the Play-In Tournament.
Sunday, April 4, 2021 Mark 14:1-7 "He Is Risen." Resurrection doesn't just mean salvation. It means new creation! This Easter we look at three blessings that come with the new creation: Renewed Bodies. Renewed Mission. Renewed Spirit.
This year we celebrate Good Friday by reading the Gospel of John chapters 18-19. We encourage you to pick up a bible, or open up your bible app, and read along with us. Then reflect upon the "stations" of Jesus' march to the cross. Good Friday is the day we remember Jesus' death on the cross. Is good Friday really “good”? It may seem odd that people celebrate the day Jesus' was crucified as “good.” Obviously, the suffering Jesus went through on Good Friday was not good. He was whipped, beaten, mocked, and killed in a very violent way. How can that be good? The results of Jesus' death are very good! This is explained in Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Then in 1 Peter 3:18, it is reiterated again: “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit.”
"Hosanna!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!" "Hosanna in the highest heaven!" ~ Mark 11:9-10 Maybe you grew up in church and know what happens on Palm Sunday. But do you know "why" Palm Sunday? Palm Sunday actually reveals who Jesus is. It reveals why he came to earth. It reveals what he is going to do. This Sunday, Palm Sunday, March 28, Sometimes we don't get what we want, but with Jesus we get what we need!
“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant..." ~ Jeremiah 31:31 In chess the winning move can come long before the final move. The board is set for an inevitable series of moves that will end with one players victory. God set up a "winning move" some six centuries before the birth of Jesus. God promised the forgiveness of all our sins. God promised a new kind of relationship. God even promised a new way of knowing Him where the law would be written on our hearts and in our minds. It's called the "New Covenant." It comes through the work of Jesus. It means we can know and be known by God. It changes everything!
When was the last time you lost something important? Your phone. Your car keys. Your kid!! Everything stopped. Nothing was more important than finding the lost object of love. In Luke 15 Jesus tells three stories, all about lost things, all pointing to this one life-changing, paradigm-shifting, status-quo shattering revelation... God loves lost people. This Sunday we'll look at Jesus' parables of lost things. If you've ever felt lost, or that you've wandered too far, or that made too many mistakes, or that you're just not worthy of love... Jesus has come to seek and save the lost.
Then (Jesus) called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. ~ Mark 8:34-35 Call it the counterintuitive invitation. Or the paradoxical path of discovery. Or the implausible key to everything... We find our life by losing it to Jesus. This Sunday, we make our own "gambit" with Jesus- Lay down your life to him, and find the life you were made to live.
A "gambit" was originally a chess term. The King's Gambit is an opening move in which a player, sacrifices material, usually a pawn, with the hope of achieving a resulting advantageous position. “Sacrifice a player to achieve an advantageous position.” God made a sacrifice on our behalf. The King of Heaven became human and was nailed to a cross. But that move has gained us a great advantage- By his sacrifice we can have eternal life. This Sunday we start our Easter Season. We walk with Jesus through the moves that led to his death, burial and resurrection. Our King's Gambit has won victory over sin and death!
