Send us a textThis week is. The. Week. We're officially back in mini episode bonus mode with The Hunger Games book 1, by Suzanne Collins dropping this Friday! So today Ashley and Liz are setting us all up for success in our dystopian sci fi series with an episode about the history of dystopias! Not surprisingly, there is a lot of ground to cover, so we do our best to take a whole lot of information and condense it down for you to put all of these stories we love so much into context.First, we go over the list of media terms and ideas you guys sent in when we asked what YOU think of when someone says dystopia, and why YOU think we're obsessed with them. Then we get into the history. Where did the idea of dystopias come from? When was the theme first featured in literature? When did the modern dystopian fiction era start? We discuss popular themes, real life events that inspired them, and how we got to where we are today. With many dystopian pieces of media marketed to everyone, including young adults, and how this has led to even more book bans. And lastly, we've got a faves and fails featuring popular dystopian media like World War Z, The Handmaid's Tale, and The Giver, and a smash or pass involving Hunger Games characters that you wouldn't expect.Sources:The Columbia Journalism Review - Dissecting Dystopia by Merrill Perlman Dystopian Fiction A Brief History by Yvonne Shiau on Electric Lit The British Library - The Fear of Dystopia by Mike Ashley Wikipedia Encyclopedia Brittanica.com American aristocracy.com NY TimesDon't be shy, subscribe! When you're in the midst of reading heavy, emotional novels, you might be looking for a book that's easy to read and lighthearted. This is that book. Today we're talking about the YA dystopian novel, Red Queen. This book is #1 in a four-book series that takes place in a world where people with silver blood have powers and people with red blood don't — except for Mare Barrow.  This week, we read Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard  Abby Williams, lover of historical fiction and a good plot twist, joins me today to talk about a book that gave us a warm, familiar feeling of mindlessly reading a fast-moving book.  In this episode we cover:  Why sometimes you need a book with weak characters and a predictable storyline to just cleanse your reading palate.  What YA dystopian novels made up our childhood.  Why we chose this book over another to review this month.   Open your book and press play on a podcast episode that will leave you wanting to look up that “spicy” scene in Divergent that you read over and over again in the 8th grade.  Mentioned in the Pairings section of the podcast: DRINK PAIRINGS: Champagne with creme de violet (grey purple like Mare's sparks), Epicuro Primitivo TV SHOW - Wednesday, Avatar the Last Airbender  BOOK - Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games - Mockingjay MOVIE - Divergent, Frozen ***  Once you're done listening, hop onto our Instagram and TikTok @rwreadspodcast to give us your thoughts on the discussion and the book. Today, in “Short Story Club,” Chelsey and Sara are chatting about “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Brudbury. This short story is about a group of young schoolchildren living on Venus, who have never seen the sun in their lifetime. It’s about sacrifice, the pain of nostalgia, bullying. It’s super short but packed with stunning detail and emotion. Our discussion includes: Bradbury’s descriptive language [11:07] That ending! We love an ambiguous ending. [15:34] Themes of sustainability and climate change [18:40]   Plus, we’re recommending six contemporary books to pair with this story, including an award-winning fantasy and a dystopian YA novel.   Past short story episodes: “Roman Fever” by Edith Wharton   Mentions: Fahrenheit 451 film Fahrenheit 451 Dear Fahrenheit 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks: A Librarian's Love Letters and Breakup Notes to the Books in Her Life The Hunger Games The October Country by Ray Bradbury . . . Pairing spoilers ahead! . . . . . . . . . . . . Chelsey’s Pairings: The Martian by Andy Weir [30:12] & Artemis by Andy Weir [30:50] The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin [33:39] The Dry by Jane Harper [37:30]   Sara’s Pairings: Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah [31:42] Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman [35:22] Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson [38:58]

Dystopian novels speak volumes about political and cultural climates, technological and scientific advances, and are often societal criticisms woven into a storyline. Some of my favorite novels fall into the dystopian genre, and with the recent release of season three of The Man in the High Castle, I wanted to briefly explore the history of the genre. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/history-in-ten/support
