The Waves The Waves is a Bay Area youth-led acappella group that blends traditional and modern songs, pushing the boundaries of choir music with creative experimentation. Teen Stress during the Holidays

“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” –Hamilton Wright Mabie Ah, the holidays. For some, it's the most magical time of the year—twinkling lights, cozy nights, and the smell of cookies baking in the oven. But if you're a teenager? Let's be real—the holidays can be a bit...complicated. Join host, Julia and guest Steffi as they discuss the joy and angst teens face during the holiday season. Steffi shares the psychology of the season. When you're a kid, the holidays are all about magic. Cookies just appear, gifts magically arrive, and the world feels wrapped up in a sparkly bow. But as a teen, the curtain gets pulled back. Suddenly, you're in charge of buying gifts (on what budget, exactly?), maybe working a holiday shift, and trying to squeeze in studying for exams. For teens, the takeaway is this: The holidays don't have to be magical in the way you thought as a kid. It's okay to feel a little stressed or even underwhelmed. But carving out small, meaningful moments—laughing with a friend, bingeing holiday movies, or just taking a deep breath—can make all the difference. “The poll that matters is the one that happens on election day.” – Heather Wilson Teen radio host Keerthi discusses the results of the 2024 election and reports on how teens are reacting to the results. She first provides a humorous rendition of the history of America's election system and the grand experiment of democracy. For all its flaws, America's election system is a beautiful, chaotic mess. It's powered by millions of people who care enough to show up—sometimes in person, by mail, and sometimes just to yell about it on Facebook. Keerthi then focuses on the unprecedented events of this election: Joe Biden dropping out of the race, the first Black/South Asian woman, Kamala Harris stepping up, a convicted felon in Trump running for the third time, and the meme-able moments from all the debates. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris represented two vastly different political ideologies, which explain their respective support bases and policy priorities. Keerthi identifies the varied values of each candidate. Many teens believe that America is doomed. However one feels about the election results, the best way to create a better country is to communicate, listen, and share our goals, thoughts, and dreams. Preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. -Carl Sagan As humanity ventures deeper into space, a big challenge has become the effects of space debris. Saanvi Phaneendra discusses what space debris is and why it is so dangerous. What is space debris? Simply put, it's any man-made object in orbit that no longer serves a purpose. This includes everything from old satellites and discarded rocket stages to tiny fragments created by collisions and disintegrations. How does all this junk end up in space? Every time a spacecraft is launched, bits and pieces of the rocket are left behind in orbit. As more missions take place, the number of debris steadily increases. Collisions between objects—whether they're active satellites or fragments of debris—only add to the mess, creating even more fragments. Saanvi then interviews her sister, Siri Phaneendra, a former radio host who recently graduated from UC Berkeley in Business and Data Science. Siri was a project manager for one of UC Berkeley's data science consulting organizations. Siri led a project with DataGood, a consulting organization that focuses on projects with a social impact. Their project aimed to analyze data from a dataset operated by the U.S. Strategic Command, to understand space debris better and find ways to reduce its risks. “Technology, like art, is a soaring exercise of the human imagination” - Daniel Bell Saanvi Phaneendra, host for today's AI presentation , is the founder of Galactic Getaway, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring curiosity and passion for space exploration. Galactic Getaway brings hands-on learning experiences and new-generation interactive rocket model displays to communities, helping youth engage with STEM and imagine their future in space technology. Saanvi discusses how AI isn't just supporting space missions—it's becoming a crucial partner. From rovers on Mars to managing satellites orbiting Earth, AI is making space missions smarter and more autonomous. One of the big challenges of space is the time delay in communications, especially for missions far from Earth. AI solves this by making real-time decisions when human intervention isn't possible, and this is helping push space exploration to new heights. Saanvi then introduces a special guest, Siri Phaneendra, who is not only her older sister, but explores the fascinating technology of Generative AI. GenAI, refers to AI systems that are capable of creating new content—whether that's text, images, music, or even complex code. What makes it different from traditional AI is that it doesn't just analyze data; it uses that data to generate something new. Think of it like a digital artist or writer. Teen Representation in Cinema

“The cinema has no boundary; it is a ribbon of dream.” - Orson Welles Are teens accurately represented in films and TV shows? Host Keerthi and reporter Hasini don't think so. They tackle this issue and agree that teens are often written by adults who have forgotten their teen years and played by older adults. There is a focus of focus on stereotypes (like the nerd, the jock, the mean girl), but not enough on the complexities and nuances that reel teens experience. Filmmakers forget that real teenagers are mostly just trying to figure out how to get a good grade while avoiding their parents' endless “life lesson” conversations. Teens are still depicted as either effortlessly cool or hopelessly awkward. It's like directors have a script that says, “Let's make the teen either an Instagram influencer who has their entire life figured out or someone who doesn't understand the concept of a phone charger.” There's rarely an in-between. Hasini thinks that, Euphoria, has done a great job of reflecting the real world. The show addresses issues like mental health, addiction, gender identity, and trauma, and it doesn't shy away from showing the raw, messy realities that many teens face. The characters are complex, flawed, and very real, which makes them relatable. Keerthi notes that cinematic portrayals are like candy—deliciously sweet but not very nutritious. They offer an escape from reality and a chance to dream about lives more glamorous, dramatic, or adventurous than our own. In conclusion, let's celebrate the diversity of teenage experiences in cinema. Let's have characters who are awkward, unsure, and who occasionally wear the same clothes three days in a row. Every teenager deserves to see themselves represented in a way that's as real as their struggle to keep their room clean. She shares personal stories of growing up and the advice she was given. She shares behaviors that children learn from parents, both positive and negative. Work ethics, social skills, and handling stress, are all connected to how you grew up. Kids who grow up in a nurturing environment tend to score higher on exams. Parents who shelter their kids from tough life lessons often end up with anxious adult children. In the second segment, Julia describes her dad's experience as a “Navy brat”, moving constantly to different states and countries because his father was a four-star Navy Admiral working with Henry Kissinger. He was resilient and adaptable, traits that continue to inspire Julia. She illustrates the different parenting styles with authoritative, yet loving, being the most balanced. We owe a lot to our parents—not just for raising us, but for shaping the way we think, act, and see the world. She and her peers organized a school walkout to protest the overturn of Roe v. Wade and advocate for reproductive rights. Hasini enters the conversation and states that even though young teens can't vote yet, their interests must be taken into account. Policies on education, climate change, healthcare, and social justice directly affect their lives, both now and in the years to come. Knowledge about the political process now prepares teens to be responsible and informed voters when they reach voting age. It also empowers teens to participate in discussions, advocate for causes they care about, and support candidates who align with their values. Elections are the cornerstone of democratic governance, giving citizens the power to choose their leaders and influence the direction of their country. In 2024, the stakes are high. Do citizens want democracy or a dictatorship? Do Americans want a leader who has integrity and advocates for freedom or a convicted felon who seeks revenge and retribution? Whatever your age, your voice makes a difference. If you are old enough to vote, do your homework and choose the best candidate. The future of our world depends on it and every vote counts. Cynthia reads the Gift of Freedom chapter from her book, Be the Star You Are!® for Teens, reflecting on two months of a study program in the U.S.S.R. before 1991. Living behind the “Iron Curtain” was a wake-up call about the privilege of freedom. In segment three, Cynthia takes us into the garden to bring freedom and flowers together to help us plant a patriotic Independence Day design. Appreciate the complexities of the gift of freedom. America may not be perfect – no country is. America is a work-in-progress, a country constantly struggling to balance rights with responsibilities and to maintain a level of freedom and justice for all. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to be born in a land that allows us the ability to travel the world, witness the cultures and lifestyles of other nations, and then return to a country that welcomes our expression. “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” - Coco Chanel We all know the saying “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, but does that truly describe the meaning of true beauty? Host Charvi shares how our perceptions of beauty change as we grow older, amplified by social media, celebrities, and marketing companies in segment two. She first interviews reporter, Kevin Choo, with his segment “A.I. and Us,” which talks about how A.I. can and does affect our lives. He discusses the use of A.I. in the field of art and asks several questions. Is A.I. art beautiful? Is A.I. art meaningful? Can A. I. evoke emotions? Charvi continues with how social media has significantly affected the concept of beauty and body image by propagating unrealistic beauty standards, such as the hourglass figure, fair skin, perfect facial features, and lean body shapes. Marketing companies and celebrities reinforce these ideals, impacting cognitive and behavioral aspects of body image. This has led to increased body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and mental health issues like depression and suicidal ideation among women worldwide. The images portrayed on social media often do not reflect reality, exacerbating insecurities and promoting a damaging comparison culture. Beauty can be found in A.I. but the most important lesson for humans to love ourselves and know that we are beautiful just the way we are! Sharanya and Keerthi host a program about a critical topic that affects Americans: gun control. Reducing gun violence is challenging because of the polarization around the issue. Keerthi talks about advocating for the Second Amendment while also requiring safety for gun storage. They interview teen activist, Amelia Vander May, who led a youth team to successfully lobby an ordinance in Santa Barbara that requires firearms to be stored in a locked container and disabled by a trigger lock. Amelia spearheaded the Santa Barbara Youth Council initiative to write and lobby for a safe storage ordinance aimed at preventing youth gun deaths. For a year, she gathered public support for the ordinance, worked with city advisory groups and nonprofits, and presented to the city council. The ordinance, which requires firearms in residences and vehicles to be stored in a locked container and disabled by a trigger lock, was passed into law and became effective in April 2024. Created to reduce gun violence, the Safe Storage Ordinance prevents unauthorized access to firearms, lowering the risk of unintentional injury, mass shootings, and gun suicides. She talks about how teens must get involved, even though many adults don't take young people seriously. She suggests that teens be professional, do the research, get involved, and have those difficult conversations. Make others aware that guns are dangerous. Banning guns is not a feasible solution. We need bipartisan support and community outreach. Background checks, safe storage methods, services for mental health, addressing racial disparity, and healthy discussions are avenues for creating a safer environment. Sharanya shares a history of firearms and the U.S. grappling with the high rates of gun violence. What are the root causes? Tune in for an educational conversation about reducing gun violence. When we are stressed, we tend to try to self-soothe. Food is comfort. Pay attention to our patterns so that we don't let our emotions govern what and how much we eat. Eating disorders of eating too much or too little are prevalent today. Talk to an expert and get support if your eating routines are out of whack. Keep a food or self-care journal. Ask yourself if you are physically hungry. Do you have fun in your life? Are you sleeping enough? Be mindful when eating. Pay attention to the colors, textures, and tastes. UFO sightings have been a source of fascination and mystery for decades, sparking the imaginations of enthusiasts and skeptics alike. Reports of unidentified flying objects range from mysterious lights zigzagging in the night sky to detailed encounters with spacecraft of seemingly extraterrestrial origin. These accounts come from all corners of the globe and from credible witnesses, including pilots, astronauts, and military personnel, who describe experiences that challenge our understanding of technology and physics. The persistent question remains: Are we truly alone in the universe, or is there evidence of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence? Saanvi interviews documentary filmmaker and investigative author, Brit Elders about her two photo journal volumes of UFO…Contact from the Pleiades. This photo journal presents the unique contact case of a Swiss farmer, Billy Meier, who claims to have met with the Pleiadians hundreds of times, compiling many layers of evidence including notes on their conversations, hundreds of photographs, movie footage, audio recordings of the craft, landing tracks of the spaceships, dozens of witnesses, and even metal samples of the craft itself. Organizations like the Innocence Project have tirelessly championed the use of DNA testing to exonerate innocent individuals, offering them a second chance at freedom and redemption. Since 1989, a staggering 575 people in the United States alone have been exonerated based on DNA testing. These are individuals who were once deemed guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, yet whose innocence was revealed through the power of science and perseverance. Julia then interviews teen Bijan Taheri, founder and director of Youth for Innocence, an organization dedicated to overturning wrongful convictions. Through volunteering, Youth for Innocence gives students first-hand experience with criminal law, aid lawyers in investigating the thousands of letters they receive from prisoners claiming innocence while taking the first step for prisoners to achieve their exoneration. They provide an initial training program to teach student volunteers to evaluate cases, examine new evidence, and assist pro bono attorneys with RT notes and summaries of cases. Volunteers then apply this knowledge to real-life cases, gaining first-hand experience with legal work and the administration of justice, and earning community service hours. Bijan personally conducted RT notes for defense attorney Ellen Eggers, as seen on Netflix's Innocence Files Episode 5, on cases to reinvestigate and exonerate innocent prisoners. The conversation is riveting and the topic is of critical importance. Tune in! Artificial intelligence is the brush that paints the canvas of possibility, blending innovation with imagination to craft a future limited only by our dreams. - Chat GPT Education is critical to success. Host Julia and reporter of “A.I. and Us,” Kevin, talk about how A.I. can and does affect our lives and can be used in the classroom. Almost two centuries ago, what was taught was math, science, reading, writing, history, and foreign languages, and that hasn't changed at all, not even what aspects of it were taught. At most, some topics were removed and some added, a few new textbooks here and there, but nothing meaningful. Artificial intelligence can integrate into the current curriculum, and have the curriculum adapt to it, and by extension, the rest of modern society. Technology has no limits, but humans do. Julia shares her experience and that of other students and teachers using A.I. She also asked ChatGPT to write an opening as the host of a radio show. It responded “Welcome, listeners, to today's special broadcast focusing on the use of ChatGPT in schools. I'm your host, Chat GPT, and I'm thrilled to guide you through this exploration of how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing education.” She exhibits how ChatGPT writes glorious poetry and very funny jokes. Julia was able to show the strengths and weaknesses of Chat GPT, including how the response was boring and non-engaging. The bottom line is that A.I. CAN be useful in the classroom. It's what you DO with it, that makes a difference. “Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.“ – Arthur C. Clark This episode of Express Yourself! could be right out of a sci-fi novel! Could outerspace become our next home? Keerthi hosts and presents a segment suggesting the idea of venturing beyond our planetary borders. She believes it is more than just finding a new place to hang our space helmets; it's about expanding our horizons, both literally and metaphorically. It's about pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible and daring to dream of worlds beyond our wildest imagination. She wants to ignite the flames of curiosity, to inspire you to gaze up at the night sky with wonder and awe, to dream of worlds beyond our own and to dare to reach for them. In her segment, Space Spotlight, Saanvi starts with Mars as our first adventure. The journey ahead is about building physical infrastructure, but also about gathering the resilience, adaptability, and community spirit needed to live in such a different environment. Mars is like the Goldilocks of our solar system – not too hot, not too cold, and with a day almost as long as ours. It's got water ice, which is crucial for life, and it's the most accessible place for us to land, live, and learn about living on another planet. Plus, its surface has varied geography, from mountains taller than Everest to canyons longer than the U.S. is wide. It's the best shot we have at a second home in the solar system. So let us embrace the uncertainty of the cosmos, let us revel in the beauty of the unknown, and let us boldly declare that yes, outer space is indeed our next home. For in doing so, we embrace the boundless potential of the human spirit, and we affirm our place in the grand tapestry of the universe. Are you ready to launch? “There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.” - W.E.B Dubois In this episode of Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio, teen host, Hannah Sahota, passionately discusses the Dobbs Decision's repeal of Roe v. Wade and its profound implications for women's bodily autonomy. Providing a historical backdrop, she underscores the significance of landmark cases that paved the way for reproductive rights The Roe v. Wade decision, a watershed moment in 1973, recognized the right to choose abortion as protected under the 14th Amendment's right to privacy. Hannah emphasizes the positive outcomes, including reduced maternal mortality and safer abortion practices. Transitioning to the Dobbs Decision of 2022, she vehemently criticizes the conservative justices involved and condemns the resulting abortion restrictions in various states. Hannah raises concerns about the negative consequences, such as a potential surge in rape-related pregnancies and the exacerbation of health inequalities. The host strongly challenges the pro-life stance, accusing conservative justices of prioritizing outdated ideals over women's rights. She advocates for comprehensive research on women's health and questions the empathy and understanding behind the pro-life position. Introducing The Hotseat to her segment, Hannah meticulously scrutinizes the backgrounds of Supreme Court Justices involved in the Dobbs Decision, exposing allegations, controversies, and potential conflicts of interest. The podcast also delves into the FBI's investigation into the People of Praise (PoP), revealing disturbing claims of abuse cover-ups within the Christian sect connected to Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Expressing frustration with the Dobbs Decision, Hannah calls for a reevaluation of the Supreme Court and urges the appointment of empathetic and transparent individuals to ensure a fair and unbiased justice system. Find friends who have the same ethics and values and who motivate you to be a better person. That is positive peer pressure. It is human nature to want to be liked, accepted, and approved.
