In this episode, Cheyenne, Ashlynn, and Ali G talk about Ray Bradbury's “All Summer in a Day.” In the story, an outsider to a colony on Venus is shunned because of her unique life experience on Earth. Why do we flock to groups? What does a group get out of having an “outsider” as a target? And Ali G makes her feelings quite clear about William. We hope you enjoy. A woman tells her son about his early life. About the months and years that he will by now have forgotten. When he was a baby, then a toddler, and when she was going into battle every day. For him first, and only then for herself. It's a battle fought on many fronts. Against exhaustion, against time, against the loss of selfhood, against an increasingly absent husband, and against a society that values women less than men, and perhaps mothers least of all. And with no guarantee that she, that they, will come out on top. Between a testimony and a confession, between a lesson and a warning to the man her boy will become Soldier Sailor is devastating, uplifting, punishing, galvanising, vertiginous, infuriating, honest, raw, painful, and illuminating…in short, as close a representation of the early days of parenthood that can be committed to words. Bu Soldier Sailor here: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/soldier-sailor-2Clare Kilroy's debut novel All Summer was described in The Times as compelling... a thriller, a confession and a love story framed by a meditation on the arts', and was awarded the 2004 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Her second novel, Tenderwire was shortlisted for the 2007 Irish Novel of the Year and the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. In an episode we last featured on our Radiolab for Kids Feed back in 2020, and in honor of its blocking out the Sun for a bit of us for a bit last week, in this episode, we're gonna talk more about the moon. According to one theory, (psst listen to The Moon Itself if you want to know more) the moon formed when a Mars-sized chunk of rock collided with Earth, the moon coalesced out of the debris from that impact. And it was MUCH closer to Earth than it is today. This idea is taken to its fanciful limit in Italo Calvino's story "The Distance of the Moon" (from his collection Cosmicomics, translated by William Weaver). Read by Liev Schreiber, the story is narrated by a character with the impossible-to-pronounce name Qfwfq, and tells of a strange crew who jump between Earth and moon, and sometimes hover in the nether reaches of gravity between the two. This reading was part of a live event hosted by Radiolab and Selected Shorts, and it originally aired on WNYC's and PRI's SELECTED SHORTS, hosted by BD Wong and paired with a Ray Bradbury classic, “All Summer in a Day,” read by musical theater star Michael Cerveris. Our newsletter comes out every Wednesday. Interview by Kris PetersIt is hard to fathom that Seattle rock outfit Candlebox have never toured Australia over the course of their 30-year existence.Since emerging from the popular music location during the mid-90s grunge scene, Candlebox have gone from strength to strength, with a remarkable number of record sales and music streams starting with their 1993 self-titled album which sold over 4 million copies and introduced Candlebox to the world with songs like Far Behind, You and Cover Me.It is even harder to comprehend that it takes Candlebox calling time on their illustrious career for the powers that be to coax them over to our part of the world, but that is just what has happened with the band poised to bring The Long Goodbye Tour to our shores in January next year. With a global tour planned, and the recent release of Candlebox's final album of the same name, frontman Kevin Martin sat down with HEAVY to talk us through what has been a stellar slice of music history. We start by jokingly asking how and why Candlebox have neglected their Australian fans for so long."I've been trying to come there for thirty years," he smiled in return, "so you'll have to talk to the promotors about it. It's been a dream of mine to come out there. I have an extended Australian family over there that I love very much. I've been coming to Australia for the past 23 years and my affinity for that country goes beyond. I think I was Australian in a past life. It's just one of those things. I love that country, and I've tried to come for 30 years. I don't know why it's taken us so long. We've asked several times about coming for some festivals with Stone Temple Pilots and the guys in Live, but I guess maybe the Australian promotors just didn't think we were popular enough, but I cannot tell you how excited I am to be coming to play there. I'm looking forward to playing in the country that hopefully, at some point, I will call home."We bring up the fact that it will be a bittersweet moment for both the band and their fans seeing them here for the first and last time."I think so," he sighed. "It's gonna be more interesting for me, I think than it is for them. I'm gonna give them two hours each night of my very best, but saying goodbye to this career has been strange. All Summer long there's been times standing on stage in front of 10,000 of my closest friends, thinking to myself this is gonna be the last time I sing this song with these people. It's a strange emotion, but I think for me being home during COVID and spending time with my wife and my son and realising just how much I missed of that life with them… was pretty Earth-shaking for me. And I sat down with my wife around September of 2020 and said I think I'm pretty much ready to put all this music thing behind me and be a husband and a Father, is that okay? And she says I would be beyond grateful but are you sure you can put that away? And I said I don't love it as much as I used to. I think it was being home for such a long extended period of time that I realised that music was no longer the love of my life, nor my mistress. It's almost as though she had become a close friend that I would bump into every now and then and didn't like seeing that much. I don't wanna be an artist who phones it in. I don't wanna be that guy. So when we went back out on the road in 2021 I made sure that the shows would be played where we wanted to play. The events that we were involved in were events that I felt were a good place for Candlebox to be, and it was all leading up to this goodbye tour of 2023 for the 30th anniversary of the debut album. So I was very conscious about what I was doing."In the full interview, Kevin talks more about the final tour, what to expect, how to wrap up 30 years of music in one show, the early days of Candlebox and where they fit in, if he has achieved everything he wanted from music, the success of their self-titled debut and why he thinks people gravitated to it, the changes in music over 30 years and how Candlebox has survived, the response to their new album The Long Goodbye and more.

In today's episode of the Teaching ELA Podcast, I discuss science fiction short stories for middle school and high school: “The Fun They Had,” “All Summer in a Day, “Examination Day,” “They're Made out of Meat,” “Harrison Bergeron,” “There Will Come Soft Rains,” “The Machine that Won the War,” “The Machine Stops,” and whatever else comes to mindI've got an emergency lesson plan you can get on the board right now. And the One Thing you can teach with any of these stories is in the show title. It's the elements of Science Fiction. By teaching students to analyze the elements of Science Fiction, you'll be hitting standards that involve theme, characterization, setting, and all those other things we discuss when we get all literary up in this mug.TakeawaysScience Fiction isn't just for nerds. You'll get a higher percentage of students who enjoy science fiction short stories than just about any other type. What makes good science fiction stories so good is their ability to connect with readers despite futuristic settings and characters.Teaching the Elements of Science Fiction will make teaching many of the elements of literature easy.Links and ResourcesSFLesson Plans CollectionScience Fiction Short Stories“Harrison Bergeron” lesson plans can be found here.“There Will Come Soft Rains” lesson plans can be found here.“A Sound of Thunder” lesson plans can be found here.Rappacinni's Daughter“The Fun They Had” lesson plans can be found here.“All Summer in a Day” lesson plans can be found here.“The Veldt” Lesson Plans can be found here.

Hey remember those short stories in English class that are outstandingly good and extremely messed up? We certainly do! (Or, Sarah does and Amelia has goldfish memory probably as a result of playing World of Warcraft for so many years.) We're talking about those dark lil short stories you read fifteen years ago and have thought about every day since. Amelia ponders the question of hubris. Sarah has deep emotions about a school group project from 15 years ago. The cat forcibly weighs in. Works mentioned: "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson "The Interlopers," by Saki"All Summer in a Day," by Ray Bradbury"The Cask of Amontillado," by Edgar Allen Poe"Little Things by Raymond Carver "The Veldt," by Ray Bradbury"The Most Dangerous Game," by Richard Connell "The Lady or the Tiger," by Frank Stockton"A Sound of Thunder," by Ray Bradbury (really only mentioned in spirit)

The Laureate for Irish Fiction, Sebastian Barry, hosts a series of brief conversations with fellow writers asking what is writing. What is its purpose and mystery beyond the pragmatic notions of academia and journalism? This series will form part of a visual archive highlighting the golden age of writing in Ireland. Claire Kilroy was born in Dublin, where she lives and works. She has written four novels, All Summer, Tenderwire, All Names Have Been Changed and The Devil I Know, which was described by The Guardian as “a satiric danse macabre of brio and linguistic virtuosity,” and by the New York Times as “savagely comic... and great fun.” Claire has been shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year three times, and was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 2004. The Laureate for Irish Fiction is an initiative of the Arts Council in partnership with University College Dublin and New York University.

Today, in “Short Story Club,” Chelsey and Sara are chatting about “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Brudbury. This short story is about a group of young schoolchildren living on Venus, who have never seen the sun in their lifetime. It’s about sacrifice, the pain of nostalgia, bullying. It’s super short but packed with stunning detail and emotion. Our discussion includes: Bradbury’s descriptive language [11:07] That ending! We love an ambiguous ending. [15:34] Themes of sustainability and climate change [18:40] Plus, we’re recommending six contemporary books to pair with this story, including an award-winning fantasy and a dystopian YA novel. Past short story episodes: “Roman Fever” by Edith Wharton Mentions: Fahrenheit 451 film Fahrenheit 451 Dear Fahrenheit 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks: A Librarian's Love Letters and Breakup Notes to the Books in Her Life The Hunger Games The October Country by Ray Bradbury . . . Pairing spoilers ahead! . . . . . . . . . . . . Chelsey’s Pairings: The Martian by Andy Weir [30:12] & Artemis by Andy Weir [30:50] The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin [33:39] The Dry by Jane Harper [37:30] Sara’s Pairings: Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah [31:42] Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman [35:22] Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson [38:58]

According to one theory, the moon formed when a Mars-sized chunk of rock collided with Earth. After the moon coalesced out of the debris from that impact, it was much closer to Earth than it is today. This idea is taken to it's fanciful limit in Italo Calvino's story "The Distance of the Moon" (from his collection Cosmicomics, translated by William Weaver). The story, narrated by a character with the impossible-to-pronounce name Qfwfq, tells of a strange crew who jump between Earth and moon, and sometimes hover in the nether reaches of gravity between the two. This reading was part of a live event hosted by Radiolab and Selected Shorts, and it originally aired on WNYC’s and PRI’s SELECTED SHORTS, paired with a Ray Bradbury classic, “All Summer in a Day,” read by musical theater star Michael Cerveris. Hosted by BD Wong, you can listen to the full show here.

Kate worried that there wouldn't be enough to talk about with this week's podcast because the featured book is so simple in both text and image. Little did she know!!! What happens when an adult woman reads this book for the first time and is told that many consider it a modern day classic? Oh. Let's find out. Along the way Kate questions the shenanigans (her word) of the bus driver, why the pigeon never has eyelashes (does Mo have something against them?), whether or not the bird is Slytherin, and Betsy begins to focus on what the prior relationship between the driver and the pigeon is exactly. All Summer we're looking at the lives of 10 different heroes of faith from Hebrews 11. Unlike the "superheroes" of our big screen and comic book fantasies, these folks were just ordinary people who came to trust God fully with their lives, and now they've been given to us as examples, that we might do the same. This week is seventh-from-Adam-Enoch, whose unusually long life seems, at first glance, as unheroic as it gets, until we get to the wild, mic-drop moment at the end.
In which Libby talks about getting her car stuck in a surprisingly deep puddle on a deserted road in the woods and having to take a breathalizer test, her affinity for Dar Williams, how her allergies have made her a great cook, her adventures at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, her unexpected path from math and computer science to music and teaching, how piano gave her a voice, and more. Five pieces of literature that have influenced Libby: Cheaper by the Dozen, The Vagina Monologues, The Handmaid's Tale, Many Moons, and "All Summer in a Day."

Today’s episode is a minipod, a smattering of time travel, future travel, and news about the show. In this episode we hear a bunch of messages from listeners: what folks think about past futures we’ve been to, and future futures we should travel to. We also cover some show news! So, in bullet point form: Some of you might be new to the show this season. Maybe you didn’t even know this was the second season! Well, it is! Season one is available on Soundcloud, where you can download all the episodes for listening purposes. The show now has a subreddit! So if you like Reddit and you want to talk about the show there, we’re at r/FlashForwardPod. I have some plans for the subreddit, including maybe some AMAs with guests of the show, and just general discussions of each future, and all that stuff. We also now have an online store! Where you can buy stuff! Right now there are a couple of different versions of the logo that you can put on anything from a tote bag to a mug to a cell phone case. It’s all very cool looking so if you’re the kind of person who likes to buy swag for shows you listen to, you can now do that at our store. And if there’s an item that you don’t see in the store that you wish you could buy, let me know. If you do buy something from the store, I would love to see pictures of whatever it is in your life! That would make me extremely happy. I mean come on check out these tote bags! The last thing I do in the episode is reveal a few of the hidden references from this season. A lot of you have asked what you should be looking for, so hopefully this will help! In episode 2, Love At First Sexbot, the names of the different sex robots are references to particular people and characters. The Hadaly is named after a mechanical woman invented by a fictional Thomas Edison in the 1886 novel The Future Eve. She’s one of the first female robots to appear in literature. The Leopold is named after Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, whose name lives on in the term “masochism.” And here’s probably the hardest one from that episode: Margot’s Discount Closet Solutions is named after a character from a Ray Bradbury short story called “All Summer in a Day.” That one was hard, I admit. In the mosquito episode, two of the names are references to Animorphs characters, and the repeated use of the number 18 points to the book in which the Animorphs turn into mosquitos. That’s often what you’re looking for. Other times it’s quotes and clips I play. So, go forth and find them! Flash Forward is produced by me, Rose Eveleth, and is part of the Boing Boing podcast family. The intro music is by Asura and the outtro music is by Broke for Free. Other music used in this episode is by Ryan Lit and Decktonic. If you want to suggest a future we should take on, send us a note on Twitter, Facebook, by voicemail at (347) 927-1425 or by sending an email or voice memo to info@flashforwardpod.com. We love hearing your ideas! And if you want to support the show, there are a few ways you can do that too! We have a Patreon page, where you can donate to the show. But if that’s not in the cards for you, you can head to iTunes and leave us a nice review or just tell your friends about us. Those things really do help. That’s all for this future, come back next week and we’ll travel to a new one. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It is Autumn. A strong wind is blowing. It blows flower seeds high in the air and carries them far across the land. One of the seeds is tiny, smaller than any of the others. Will it be able to keep up with the others? And where are they all going? One of the seeds flies higher than the others. Up, up it goes! It flies too high and the sun's hot rays burn it up. But the tiny seed sails on with the others. Another seed lands on a tall and icy mountain. The ice never melts, and the seed cannot grow. The rest of the seeds fly on. But the tiny seed does not go as fast sa the others. Now they fly over the ocean. One seed falls into the water and drowns. The others sail on with the wind. But the tiny seed does not go as high as the others. One seed drifts down onto the desert. It is hot and dry, and the seed cannot grow. Now the tiny seed is flying very low, but the wind pushes it on with the others. Finally the wind stops and seeds fall gently down on the ground. A bird comes by and eats one seed. The tiny seed is not eaten. It is so small that the bird does not see it. Now it is Winter. After their long trip the seeds settle down. They look just as if they are going to sleep in the earth. Snow falls and covers them like a soft white blanket. A hungry mouse that also lives in the ground eats a seed for his lunch. But the tiny seed lies very still and the mouse does not see it. Now it is spring. After a few months the snow has melted. It is really spring! Birds fly by. The sun shines. Rain falls. The seeds grow so round and full they start to burst open a little. Now they are not seeds any more. They are plants. First they send roots down into the earth. Then their little stems and leaves begin to grow up toward the sun and air. There is another plant that grows much faster than the new little plants. It is a big fat weed. And it takes all the sunlight and the rain away from one of the small new plants. And that little plant dies. The tiny seed hasn't begun to grow yet. It will be too late! Hurry! But finally it too starts to grow into a plant. The warm weather also brings the children out to play. They too have been waiting for the sun and spring time. One child doesn't see the plants as he runs along and--Oh! He breaks one! Now it cannot grow any more. The tiny plant that grew from the tiny seed is growing fast, but its neighbor grows even faster. Before the tiny plant has three leaves the other plant has seven! And look! A bud! And now even a flower! But what is happening? First there are footsteps. Then a shadow looms over them. Then a hand reaches down and breaks off the flower. A boy has picked the flower to give to a friend. It is Summer. Now the tiny plant from the tiny seed is all alone. It grows on and on. It doesn't stop. The sun shines on it and the rain waters it. It has many leaves. It grows taller and taller. It is taller than the people. It is taller than the trees. It is taller than the houses. And now a flower grows on it. People come from far and near to look at this flower. It is the tallest flower they have ever seen. It is a giant flower. All Summer long the birds and bees and butterflies come visiting. They have never seen such a big and beautiful flower. Now it is Autumn again. The days grow shorter. The nights grow cooler. And the wind carries yellow and red leaves past the flower. Some petals drop from the giant flower and they sail along with the bright leaves over the land and down to the ground. The wind blows harder. The flower has lost almost all of its petals. It sways and bends away from the wind. But the wind grows stronger and shakes the flower. Once more the wind shakes the folwer, and this time the folwer's seed pod opens. Out come many tiny seeds that quickly sail far away on the wind.
Hello, and welcome fellow literary lovers to Little Bibliophile, the podcast by a very short literary lover. Today is March 3, and I would like you all to know that my birthday is in a week. (I get very excited about my birthday.) You can send any birthday wishes or other comments or questions to my email, littlebibliophile@hotmail.com. In other news, I also started a new podcast, a companion to this one; it is called “LiteraryMe,” and it will be all of my favorite poetry. You can find it on iTunes soon. Today is going to be a very special episode. This one is dedicated to my dad, who is my biggest fan and a huge podcast buff. He's actually the one who got me listening to a lot of the podcasts that inspired me to make this one. In honor of his unflagging support, I decided to pick one of my favorite short stories that is also by one of his favorite authors, Ray Bradbury. I don't know if my dad has ever read the short story I picked out for today, but he loves Bradbury's novels, such as The Illustrated Man and The Halloween Tree. What I love about Bradbury is how powerfully emotional all of his pieces are. So many of his short stories have put me into a kind of shock after reading them, where I was literally stunned and all I could think about was how amazing the story was. So, I hope you enjoy “All Summer in a Day,” by Ray Bradbury.
