I was asked to watch the Memorial Day celebration in Washington, DC on saturday night. It was very moving and the stories of sacrifice and loss of loved ones for the sake of our Nation was sobering at the very least. I proceeded today on Memorial Day to watch another Memorial Day celebration of sacrifice at Arlington National Cemetery where the President and Vice President of the United States gave very moving speeches and recognized many families who had lost loved ones. In student ministry, these soldiers are mostly still in our wheelhouse of ministry between the ages of 18 to 25 years of age, which is still adolescence.   I felt God's move in me saying, "Get in touch with those you know whose life were almost lost serving our nation" and I was able to reach one of them. Clark Blake was a Recon Marine that served in Vietnam. This means he was the toughest of the tough! I asked Clark to tell his story and he graciously did thouroughly in this interview. Clark and his family are true national and heavenly treasures! _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? You can read my book “Burn Up Not Out: A Student Ministry Fire Builder's Guidebook” here: https://amzn.to/3PtBTIy Listen to more episodes from the Youth Worker On Fire Podcast here: https://bit.ly/3saDyYq _______________________________ EPISODE CREDITS Email us at: youthworkeronfire@gmail.com Hosted by: Doug Edwards Theme Song: "The One and Only" by The 808 : Listen to more at https://bit.ly/3FTYIAJ Intro/Outro Voiceover: Michael Helms : https://www.youtube.com/@MichaelTheSoundGuy  Edited by: Secret Roots Music House

Disney's new live-action remake of Snow White has been a disaster with people on all sides of the political divide and culture wars finding something to hate about the film, but could it also be full of important Christian theology? Phil and Skye are joined by Mike Erre to examine the biblical theme of abundance versus scarcity, how it applies to Christians, and why so many evangelicals have accepted a zero-sum vision that is contrary to the kingdom of God. Kaitlyn Schiess interviews Bri Stensrud, director of Women of Welcome, about her journey from being a pro-life advocate to also being pro-immigrant and the false narratives too many Christians believe about this issue. Also this week—Franklin Graham criticizes Donald Trump (for his language), and did the CIA find the Ark of the Covenant in 1988?   Holy Post Plus: Bonus Interview with Bri Stensrud: https://www.patreon.com/posts/125693313/   Ad-free Version of this episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/125704877/   0:00 - Show Starts   3:30 - Theme Song   3:50 - Sponsor - BetterHelp - This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. In this episode, host OP Almaraz guides listeners through firsthand accounts of a recent, chaotic wildfire event. His guests/staff, Erika and Ally, share their experiences working on the frontlines during the crisis. They discuss the intense days following the wildfire—from the initial panic on Tuesday through the exhausting days of Wednesday, Thursday, and the weekend—when they received frantic calls from homeowners desperate for wildfire protection. Key themes include: Wildfire Response Realities: Erika and Ally explain how homeowners, overwhelmed with anxiety, often expected a firefighter-like response. They clarify that while their role is to protect properties by managing vegetation and applying fire retardants, they do not stay on-site to monitor homes continuously during an active fire. Community Connection & Education: Amid the chaos, many clients expressed genuine gratitude for the calm and informative support they received. The conversation highlights that wildfire prevention is a year-round effort, emphasizing proactive measures over last-minute responses. Behind the Scenes Challenges: The episode provides insights into the "war room" environment where the team juggled high call volumes, coordinated limited crew resources, and navigated logistical hurdles. Anecdotes, like Edwin's fire-retardant-covered boots, showcase both the physical and emotional demands of the work. Looking Ahead: With the immediate crisis transitioning to post-fire challenges such as smoke management and concerns over toxic residues, OP Almaraz, Erika, and Ally stress the importance of preparation. They urge homeowners to treat wildfire prevention like a “seatbelt”—an essential measure that provides an extra layer of safety. In a groundbreaking development, Allied Disaster Defense is now franchising its wildfire defense expertise, signaling a new era for an industry poised to become one of the most in-demand in the coming years. This episode offers a timely glimpse into how proactive wildfire defense can transform communities and create vast opportunities for growth. Show Notes Introduction (00:00 – 00:00:14) Podcast Focus: Latest trends in protecting properties against wildfire. Host: OP Almaraz welcomes listeners and sets the stage for a special episode featuring insights from his guests. Initial Recollections (00:00:14 – 00:01:07) Guests Introduced: Erika and Ally share their frontline experiences during the wildfire. Event Overview: Discussion of the intense days starting Tuesday when chaos unfolded. Homeowner Experiences & Expectations (00:01:07 – 00:03:03) Emotional Calls: Erika and Ally recount frantic calls from distressed homeowners. Clarifying Roles: They explain that their work focuses on prevention—managing vegetation and applying fire retardants—not continuous monitoring of homes. Team's Operational Challenges (00:03:03 – 00:05:12) Logistical Hurdles: High call volumes, limited crew availability, and the pressure to respond quickly. Anecdotes: Personal stories such as Edwin's fire-retardant-covered boots illustrate the demanding environment. Emphasizing Proactive Prevention (00:05:12 – 00:07:38) Year-Round Preparedness: The guests stress the importance of planning ahead to avoid last-minute emergencies. Learning Experiences: Reflections on how the intense period led to growth and better wildfire prevention strategies. Community Dynamics & Communication (00:07:38 – 00:09:24) Neighborhood Solidarity: How local apps, word-of-mouth, and community groups helped disseminate their contact information. Connection: Stories of community cooperation in the face of crisis. Post-Fire Concerns & Ongoing Services (00:09:24 – 00:14:31) Transition to Recovery: Discussion of challenges like smoke management and toxic residue. Homeowner Anxiety: Accounts of homeowners' stress over returning to damaged or unfamiliar spaces, and the steps being taken to address these issues. Final Reflections & Key Takeaways (00:14:31 – 00:20:45) Proactive Preparedness: Emphasis on the necessity of preparing for wildfires in advance, treating prevention measures as critical as a seatbelt. Community Effort: A call for neighborhoods to band together and protect their homes collectively. Conclusion (00:20:45 – 00:21:00) Final Thanks: OP Almaraz thanks Erika, Ally, and the listeners. I took what I knew and I maximized it. I was relentless, because I knew it was the right thing to do. I never felt trained enough nor that I had enough knowledge. God calls us to trust Him and to go with what He has shown us until... He shows us more.  It's like driving in the fog at night in the mountains. Traveling through Blowing Rock, North Carolina at 2:00AM, I would have to rely only on the road I could see with my headlights. I would many times stick my head out of the window to see more clearly, so that I would not fall off the mountain. I had to go with what I knew! In student ministry... I knew this. Students and families would not come to me unless I went to them first. I had to go to them and I was relentless.  I went to high school and middle school campuses 3 to 4 times every week. Then I would go to recitals, ball games, birthday parties, and awards banguets. I was invited to supper by students parents sometimes and I would say yes just to be where they were. I would go and meet principals, teachers, superintendents of school districts, school board members, etc. There was no list of places that I could not or would not go. Sometimes they might come to one of our student ministry meetings... but I had to go to see hundreds and sometimes thousands to get 40 and 50 students together on a regular basis so that we could lead and disciple them. There were times when we would attract hundreds for big events. I did what I was taught… I had to GO so that some might hear the good news. ALWAYS GO... but when your family needs you… STAY.

On of them was the Late The Honorable John Lewis (D,GA) who Fought & Marched in 2020 to the Very End!!I have attended events Remembering the History, People & Sacrifice. The Fight for Justice Continues Today in 2020 as People Take to the Streets to Voice their Opinions to Help Bring About Change. My Guest this Week was asked to join the Selma March in Alabama in 1965 by Dr. Martin Luther King. His name: Joseph Cooney Esq., then a newly ordained Priest. He also worked with SCLC in the Voters Registration Summers of 1966-67.In 1965,State Troopers Clashed with Citizens marching to Montgomery, Alabama to petition the state for African-American's Right to Vote. Many lives would change in this fight. Some lives both Black & White lost. The March from Selma to Montgomery was inspired by the death of Jimmie Lee Jackson was a civil rights activist in Marion, Alabama, and a deacon in the Baptist church. On February 18, 1965, while participating in a peaceful voting rights march in his city, he was beaten by troopers and shot by Alabama State Trooper John Bonard Fowler Jackson was unarmed and died eight days later in the hospital. His death was part of the inspiration for the Selma to Montgomery marches in March 1965, a major events in the American Civil Rights Movement that helped gain Congressional passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This opened the door to millions of African Americans being able to vote again in Alabama and across the South, regaining participation as citizens in the political system for the first time since the turn of the 20th century, when they were disenfranchised by state constitutions and discriminatory practices.© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!© 2024 All Rights Reserved Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBAS Spot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

He recounts in detail his experience with EMDR, and how it helped transform his perception of himself and the world. Through a lot of courage and inner stamina Justin is able to reflect on the magic of EMDR with a very personal and open account of his experience.

Season 2 Bonus Episode – First-hand experience in the trenches of Covid-19: Dr. Alejandro Pezzulo

Vets First Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2022 53:07

In this episode of the Vets First Podcast, Levi and Brandon interview Dr. Alejandro Pezzulo, a pulmonologist, and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa. This episode was recording back in August of 2021 during the height of the Delta wave. We think this is an interesting look into COVID-19 with a critical care provider. Dr. Pezzulo was born in Caracas, Venezuela where he grew and eventually went to medical school.  He became interested in biomedical research, particularly pulmonology, and established connections at the University of Iowa. Dr. Pezzulo wanted to include research with being a clinician and began work with the VA during his internal medicine residency. He enjoyed talking and working with Veterans while providing clinical care and continues to do so to this day. He notes that some of his favorite patients are Veterans.   In our discussion, Dr. Pezzulo shares with Levi and Brandon his insight into SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.  He breaks down how COVID-19 affects the body, why the body's response to this virus is so severe, and how current treatments work to combat this disease. Particularly, Dr. Pezzulo illustrates the difference between how the body responds to a new virus never experienced before and how the immune response plays a role. He also comments on why COVID-19 is more harmful to some patients than others and what factors play a role. Additionally, Dr. Pezzulo comments on how the COVID-19 vaccines are made, getting the COVID-19 vaccine even if a person has already contracted the virus, the potentials of long COVID, and a brief history on vaccination efforts with other diseases like polio and measles. Finally, he discusses what it has been like for a critical care pulmonologist during the pandemic.  For the latest science and research on COVID-19, we highly encourage our listeners to consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-and-research.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fcoronavirus%2F2019-ncov%2Fmore%2Fscience-and-research.html
