In this powerful episode, we hear the inspiring life story of Venus Morris Griffin, a mother of 7 and a highly successful realtor in Georgia. Content Warning: This episode discusses sensitive topics, including abuse in Venus' 20-year marriage to her first husband. Venus's path to success wasn't easy. Growing up in a home with an addicted mother, she defied the odds by working two jobs and putting herself through college. It was during this time that she met and married Tripp Morris, and together they started a family. However, behind the seemingly happy facade, Venus faced immense challenges. Signs of abuse surfaced early in their engagement, but it wasn't until 20 years later, after a shocking call in the middle of the night, that Venus discovered her husband's double life. Tripp was sentenced to 45 years in prison, leaving Venus with overwhelming debt and six kids. In this candid conversation, Venus shares her emotions during that moment of betrayal and how her unwavering faith and determination helped her not only survive but thrive. Despite facing betrayal, abuse, and more, Venus managed to create a beautiful life for herself. Humans of New York is a photo-slash-storytelling-slash-fundraising powerhouse with 30 million followers on social media. You read narratives about overcoming adversity, personal revelations, or just flat-out great stories. Just that combination alone - the photos and their captions - have been enough to launch Humans of New York into worldwide popularity. But its creator, Brandon Stanton, has taken it one step further. When a subject of his tells a story about a specific need, he shares their GoFundMe page, and it explodes with contributions from HONY fans. On today's show, you'll hear my conversation with Brandon at The Connecticut Forum recently, as he talks about his process, overcoming rejection, and the new era of Humans of New York as a philanthropic powerhouse. In a single moment, an educator can dramatically change a person's life, even if they didn't know it. It's a lesson K.M. DiColandrea, aka DiCo, a 2021 Robert M. Sherman Young Pioneers Award recipient and director and founder of the Brooklyn Debate League, learned in the most unexpected way. DiCo shares his journey, and struggles, to follow his life's calling – empowering under-privileged students through skillful debate, to amplify their voices and replace self-doubt with self-confidence. DiCo's life, and mission, was catapulted into the stratosphere after a grateful student got him featured on the Humans of New York Facebook account, raising over $1.3 million to help close the wide gap in Speech and Debate programs across New York City. Hear about his incredible journey, and which biblical story best reflects his own. This episode was produced by Dina Nusnbaum and Gabriel Weinstein. “I've just been struggling to survive. To figure out how to survive. I want people to see me and say, ‘OK, let's not look at what we think people are.' Because everybody has their own struggles. Life is tough!” Earlier this month, I found myself glued to my phone, rabidly refreshing the Humans of New York Instagram account, waiting for updates in the 13-part story about a woman in Augusta, GA. The woman was Venus Morris Griffin. Today, she's a hugely successful realtor and mom of seven. But the road to becoming one of Meybohm Real Estate's leading agents (Venus has closed more than $500 million in sales she she started with the agency) has been anything but easy. In fact, it still isn't easy, Venus says. In this conversation, Venus talks about her difficult childhood, about falling in love with a man at USC, and about having six children together. She talks about being home with the kids — the youngest was just one year old, and the oldest was 15 — while her husband was away on a work trip, and getting a call in the middle of the night from a sex worker. A call that changed everything. Not only was Venus's husband, Tripp, sleeping with sex workers, Venus also learned that there was sexual abuse within the home. Today, Tripp is serving a 45-year sentence for child molestation. Here, Venus talks about how she kept moving forward, how she showed up for her children and for herself, and why she started running to get through it all. Plus, she talks about what it was like having her story shared widely through Humans of New York, and both the amazing (a book! a movie!) and less-amazing (losing clients and sales) responses. Arguably one of the most magical and ephemeral forms of performance art in New York City is street performance.. from buskers at subway stations, to jazz bands at city parks, and even well-dressed fashionistas on Broadway. With venues closed during the pandemic, city streets became a common ground for any kind of artistry. As restrictions lifted many of these performances persisted, offering an optimistic accompaniment to the city's reopening.
Have you ever read an article or a story, and thought to yourself, this would make a great movie? In this episode, we explore two different yet eyebrow-raising stories of two Ghanaians from different backgrounds pursuing their respective dreams in the media and creative arts industry, one a photographer raised in Ghana, the other a musician, raised in the UK, also from Ghanaian descent. If you are working on a business, a side hustle or some type of dream, what I am about to share with you is only going to make you stronger. Nothing is impossible in this life. Paul Ninson might sound familiar because he was featured in September 2021 on Humans of New York. Paul is committed to inclusive and equitable learning and is raising funds to build a non-profit organization committed to visual education through the advancement of visual storytelling in Ghana, Africa, the Dinka Learning Center. “I took down all facades. I just could not hold up this fake exterior of everything was OK when I felt like I could barely get out of bed every day. I would just get up, go to work, and the only thing else that was consistent was running. I would run every day, despite how bad I felt. And it was such a sense of refuge at points. I would feel like I would be OK. And that's when I would start planning for the future. I was like, ‘Deirdre, this is transient. This is going to get better. You are going to get better. Dad's looking out for you. Don't give up. Just keep going. Get through today. Tomorrow will hopefully be a better day. And if it's not, that's OK, too. We will get there.' Running reinforced that resiliency that I truly thought I'd lost.” Deirdre Keane normally flies pretty under the radar. But last month, the 33-time marathoner (whose personal best time is 3:14) became a face seen by millions when she was featured on Humans of New York. Suddenly, 11.3 million people on Instagram and 17 million more on Facebook knew Deirdre's story. In the post, Deirdre shared the story of her dad, who was an avid (and fast!) marathoner. She talked about how he ran his final New York City Marathon the day before what turned out to be his final surgery to help treat his melanoma. Deirdre talked about how her dad so badly wanted his kids to be runners when they were growing up, but they weren't interested — until after his passing, when Deidre decided to run her first marathon on what would've been her dad's birthday. Then, Deirdre talked about going through a tough time last year, and how running became her constant — it was what she did to remember who she was, and who she is. On this episode, Deirdre talks about the rest of her story. She talks about waking up at 4 AM to run 10 miles to work from her home in the Bronx to the Upper East Side, where she's a nurse practitioner in the pediatric ICU at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She talks about working through the pandemic in New York City, about leaning into running after her brother was in a near-fatal car accident, and about her big plans for her next year on the run (starting with three fall marathons: Boston, New York City, and Dallas). When she's not working or on he run, Deirdre is pursuing her MBA at New York University, where she is also the editor-in-chief of the school's graduate newspaper. There's an old proverb that says “familiarity breeds contempt”. Meaning that if we're too close to or have extensive knowledge of someone, it can sometimes lead to a loss of respect for them, or we become careless around them or we lose the ability to see their brilliance. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're taking a look at how often the people in our lives (including ourselves), can lose their “shine” in our eyes simply because we've been around them a lot, have history or interact in the day-to-day. In a world of hype and competitiveness and a brain that has a big ol' negativity bias, we need to train our minds to stay on the lookout for the “good, beautiful and holy” and to not lose sight of the extraordinary in the ordinary. Do not take for granted or lose sight of the brilliance around you in your friends, family, furry kids and in your own extraordinary-ness either. Just because the “knuckleheads” around you, might not be able to see it, acknowledge it or reflect it back to you, doesn't mean it isn't there. Be willing and committed to stepping out of the negative bias to cheerlead the ones you love; including yourself! Thank you for listening to this first Alopecia Life episode of 2021. There's a lot of collective hope in the world right now, and today's guests are perfect for keeping that hope going. Last month, many of us who follow newsfeeds about alopecia were super excited to see the Humans of New York Facebook page featuring Danielle, Connolly, and Damon. Most of the world's population is still in the dark about what alopecia areata is, and by sharing their story with Humans of New York, awareness exponentially rose by the thousands, and by the time this episode releases, those numbers will rise to beyond 253,000. When talking after the interview, Danielle mentioned that she would like to "do more," which is something that resonates with so many of us who have been diagnosed or have family members with alopecia. We want to help others, especially in those early days. What better way to do that than by sharing their story on this huge HONY platform? We are thankful that Brandon Stanton saw this story as valuable and as one that would inform the lives of his readers. Thank you for listening to today's episode. If you have questions or comments you would like to share with me, Danielle, or any of the boys - we are all happy to answer them in the Alopecia Life FB group or on Instagram. In this episode, Jenn Green, founder of This Baby Mama Body and I get VERY passionate about how women's bodies are portrayed in the media, and what it means to start a podcast that aims to normalize larger women. Jenn is a plus-sized fitness coach who refuses to believe that women should be made to feel like their bodies aren't good enough, post-partum (or at any time for that matter!). And now, she's launching a podcast to help more women move towards true body acceptance.Getting VocalJenn was one of the first Podcast Rocketeers back in May of 2020 and I was SO excited for her to join! Her passion for podcasting as a medium to share the stories of women who have given birth really speaks to my social justice warrior nature, because sharing stories about women's bodies (and especially larger bodies) is in and of itself an act of defiance against the patriarchy.Originally, Jenn had planned to do a full “Humans Of New York” style show, and to stay away from the mic. But then, she realized she needed to be part of the conversation, and I'm so glad she made that decision. The most important thing we can do as podcasters is use our own voices to inspire others to do the same. And it might seem really hard and really scary at first to put yourself right in the middle of the spotlight, but by opening up and being vulnerable and saying what you believe, you make it possible for others to do the same. And that is exactly what Jenn is doing with her new podcast, Body Talks by Baby Mamas.Oh heck yeah, we both hate the patriarchy. To hear Jenn speak about creating a world where mothers don't feel like they need to “get their pre-baby bodies back” or spend countless hours doing exercise as a punishment, is so powerful. When she shares her philosophies (and she also shares more on Kirsten Jordan's podcast, Perfectly Imperfect Social) you can't help but wonder why the hell no one else is talking about health and fitness the way she does. It's totally radical to think that fitness isn't a chore, or a punishment. It's totally radical to believe that a negative self-image stems from generations of women being told that they weren't good enough. And what Jenn is doing, by normalizing post-baby bodies, is so radical that you need to hear it to believe it. Jenn's new podcast, Body Talks by Baby Mamas, launches TODAY! YES that's right we totally synced up the release of this episode with her podcast launch! And I'm so totally proud of her accomplishments, and so honoured to be part of her journey to launching this badass pod!Links mentioned in this episode:Free Mini course - The first steps you can take towards body acceptance - http://www.babymamafitness.com/Goal Getter - http://www.babymamafitness.com/goalgetter/Podcast Rocket: https://theultimatecreative.com/podcast-rocket

This is THE #HeadTrash episode #PaulLanigan is a failed software engineer, failed salesman, raconteur, photographer, film maker, confused father, middling husband and all round good egg. He is the author of SoftTalesHardAsses and the longest serving international #Sandler Franchisee. I first came across Paul in 2003 when I was exploring a career change and buying my own #SandlerFranchise. He told me my 5 months of procrastination had cost me the UK master franchise which probably saved many franchisees years of heartache over the years. We discuss head trash in all its glory - attachment, demotivation, limiting beliefs, mismanagement - and our journeys through it, facing it today and the work we do with our clients to help them through theirs. If I'm being honest, I quickly realised the best way to deal with my own head trash was to find someone who was just as messed up as me in a particular area of sales, and then get paid to fix us both. Turns out this is a good business model. I want to thank all of my early client in particular for the lessons you taught me and the help you afforded me to better understand the human condition, and for funding my decadent lifestyle. Paul and I argue about whether it is possible to motivate anyone to do anything, ever. I say so. He says yes. What do you think? (Hint - he's wrong) Paul draws a very interesting parallel between excellence in sales and excellence in photography. If you've not come across a very special blog #HumansOfNewYork, check it out. This episode has a bit of rum language and the recording quality is not great because my broadband at the office has plummeted to 0.2Mb upload speed and Paul proved why he should have left IT development by his own technical ineptitude. Sorry about that. The content is still fantastic and you'll be an absolute cretin not to listen to the end. Get stuck in. Comment. Subscribe. Share. And if you know someone who would be a great guest on #TheInquisitorPodcast please refer them to the url "marcuscauchi.podbean.com" or to your favourite episode(s). I have some absolutely stonkingly good episodes coming down the pipe before Christmas covering #SellingtotheCSuite, #EffectiveSalesManagement, #ModernSelling, #TrednsInSales you need to understand because they will effect you massively in the next 12-18 months and so much more. Thanks for listening. Tell your friends, Tweet and make someone's day by giving them the gift of a tag and a share to an episode today.
Chase Jarvis and Brandon Stanton are two creative powerhouses. They’ve been through the creative trenches and produced amazing work, and both consider establishing a creative practice to be as valuable and urgent as exercise or nutrition. They met onstage at Town Hall for a conversation highlighting Chase’s new book Creative Calling—centered on the notion that creativity isn’t a skill, it’s a habit available to everyone. From beginners to lifelong creators, entrepreneurs to executives, astronauts to zookeepers, Jarvis and Stanton explored strategies for everyone to focus the creative forces inside and unleash them to transform our lives and deliver vitality to everything we do. Jarvis and Stanton unpacked and reframed the creative process with the “IDEA” system: Imagine your big dream, whatever you want to create—or become—in this world; Design a daily practice that supports that dream—and a life of expression and transformation; Execute on your ambitious plans and make your vision real; and Amplify your impact through a supportive community you’ll learn to grow and nurture. Harness your creativity and learn how small, daily actions can help us to supercharge our innate creativity and rediscover our personal power in life. Chase Jarvis is well known as a photographer, director, and fine artist. He is the co-founder of CreativeLive, the world’s largest live streaming creative education website, as well as the host of the weekly video series Chase Jarvis Raw and the Chase Jarvis Live podcast. Brandon Stanton is an author, photographer, and blogger. He is the creator of the photoblog and book Humans of New York, featuring hundreds of portraits and excerpts of the lives of people living in New York City. He is one of Time magazine’s “30 Under 30 People Changing The World.” Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Great Hall at Town Hall Seattle on September 23, 2019.

If you believed this physical world is all there is, how would you make sense of consciousness? How would you deal with the absurdity of life? Would such questions bother you? For a young man in London, these questions are so troubling that his daily life is being disrupted. The post of him and his comment drew thousands of comments from others, many of them saying that they experienced, and are experiencing, the same. Andy can resonate with these commenters, as he himself wrestled with the same existential dread. Get his thoughts on today's edition of the AC Podcast. This is We Are Photographers with Paul Ninson and this is his story.
Before there was a NY Times best-selling book, before there were more than 20 millions of followers on social media, before he launched a campaign that raised $1 million for a Brooklyn school, Brandon Stanton was a blogger with a quirky goal. He wanted to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and create a visual census of the city. And that's when we found him. I stumbled on HONY in 2011 and had a crazy idea that we should invite him to one of our Free Photo Webinars. We often asked photographers to share their work on our webinars and answer questions from members of our community. Honestly, I didn't think I'd hear from him, so I was a little geeked out when he wrote right back — and agreed. In all, we spent about 1.5 hours on that webinar. Brandon answered questions patiently and shared his philosophy on so many parts of his work. Brandon's interview was one of my favorite from back then. I trimmed the conversation down a bit but wanted to leave most of it intact. I think you'll want to hear the entire interview. Support the show (https://www.learncanon.com/patrons)

DANISH: Radiovagabond.dk Here is a special episode that I chose to call Humans of New York The Podcast. Here I ask the same five questions to six very different New Yorkers. Rafael, a Columbian that moved here when he was three. Bill, a 34 year-old New Yorker that I met one morning when I was taking a walk by the river. Cecilie, a 30-something Danish artist and singer songwriter that moved here to New York 6 years ago. Brian, a guy in the music industry that discovered Nora Jones. Fran, a music producer Elias, a caterer that is born in the Dominican Republic. In this episode you will get the answers to the first three questions: What's the best part about living in New York? What's the worst part about living here? If you were supreme leader of the city what would be your first executive order? Part 2 will be out in a few days. Eric is the creator of Humans of Ottawa. A page very similar to Humans of New York. Humans of Ottawa started as a assignment and has turned into an Instagram with over 10,500 followers. This didn't happen by accident, there was a previous Humans of Ottawa page that didn't takeoff the same way Eric's did. In this episode he'll explain how he treats each story with the utmost integrity and respect and wants to allow people to tell the story they want to tell. We'll also discuss what it's like going up to strangers on the streak and having deep and emotional conversations with them. We also look at the tactical side as to how he grew the page. Eric get's really into a tactic he did with hashtags where he would rank on smaller hashtags in order to be featured by bigger hashtags. In the interview Eric said that this is something he has never done, so I am honoured that I was able to be his first ever interview. If you don’t know Brandon, you definitely know his work. Brandon is the creator of Humans of New York which has accumulated over 20 million followers worldwide and turned into two NYT-bestselling books (Humans of New York and Humans of New York: Stories). It has also spawned an entire genre of similar blogs. Hundreds of aspiring documentarians have followed in HONY’s footsteps, telling the stories of countries, cities, and communities across the world. During a PhotoWeek session we had at CreativeLive, Brandon shared his story from getting fired at a job he hated to selling everything to move to New York to try to be a photographer. Brandon shares what he has learned along the journey of interviewing thousands of people and how they have shaped his storytelling. If you love this episode, you might also want to check out the video version of this talk to see some of the photos he shares during his talk. You can do that by logging onto creativelive.com and searching “Brandon Stanton”. In today's episode: There’s a subtle but crucial mind shift that needs to happen if you want mental freedom. You need to consciously decide what you’re going to spend your brain power on and consciously decide what you’re not. Focus on the things that make you feel the way you want to feel and do the things you want to be doing. You can plan all you want, but you won’t know if your plan works until you start executing it. The original Humans of New York plan looks nothing like what the project has turned into today. Choosing the work that you do is a better goal than not working at all. Following your dreams is hard work, but success is getting to spend every day doing what you want to be doing. Worth it. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. While I often praise this company's lion's mane mushroom coffee for a minimal caffeine wakeup call that lasts, I asked the founders if they could help me—someone who's struggled with insomnia for decades—sleep. Their answer: Reishi Mushroom Elixir. They made a special batch for me and my listeners that comes without sweetener; you can try it at bedtime with a little honey or nut milk, or you can just add hot water to your single-serving packet and embrace its bitterness like I do.Try it right now by going to foursigmatic.com/ferriss and using the code Ferriss to get 20 percent off this rare, limited run of Reishi Mushroom Elixir. This week on Magic Lessons, Elizabeth Gilbert advises Anne, a photographer in Pennsylvania. For the last few years Anne has been documenting her brother's life. He's a veteran with PTSD and a recovering drug addict. She imagines turning all this material into a photo-essay exhibit or book, but she's afraid to take the next steps to make it happen. To help guide Anne, Liz calls up her friend Brandon Stanton, the photographer and creator of the photo series "Humans of New York.” Several weeks later, Anne reveals what she's been up to since getting all this advice. Bob and Alex talk about the wildly popular photoblog Humans of New York and the leadership lessons to be learned from Brandon Stanton. His Facebook page has well over 15 million likes, but there are leadership lessons to be learned from his art and his approach.
(Photographer, Storyteller) Through documenting Humans of New York (HONY), Brandon Stranton has created a blog showcasing the people in Gotham and the stories that have shaped their lives. While his work started as a simple photographic essay of colorfully dressed people he found on the street, it eventually morph into an intimate digest of accounts shared by the people he was photographing. Over time Brandon began to extract and broadcast their stories of deeper feelings and instances of transition mixed with candid humor. Eventually these stories shaped an online community of 13+ million followers which continues to share their collective thoughts and emotions regarding the subjects and their matter. Today Brandon and I sit down to talk about the world we live in: a place where, once warmed up, people are more comfortable to talk about personal matters with a stranger than they are with their loved ones. Today's show discusses: Creating HONY through good stories The effects of interviewing 10,000 people Working to find the individual story of each person through presence The Key to life is… Keeping it grounded beyond your worldview Is Brandon a Reptilian Overlord? Working beyond definition Being a New Yorker with a larger-than-life project Approaching strangers and cutting through Broadcasting to strangers vs connecting with the people closest to us Changing with friends Sincere connection with each other Manifesting your dreams for control and freedom Living in the work is the reward Let go of monetary concerns to get power in your life The worlds dumbest question LINKS Follow Brandon's journey: Humans of New York siteBe sure to sign up on the mailing list on my site!
