The stretch from June 16 through July 7 of 2024 was amongst the deadliest in the recorded history of the Grand Canyon. Four hikers lost their lives during that period, with the assumption (it's too early for official causes to be released) that some, or perhaps all, were heat-related. Mr. Sims had been in the Canyon many times before, and was heading to Phantom Ranch with his niece and her husband on June 29. He never made it.
