Monreith, Massachusetts, was once a small community of whalers and farmers. These days it's a well-to-do town filled with commuters drawn to its rugged coastline and country roads. A peaceful, predictable place—until popular restaurateur Laurel Thibodeau is found brutally murdered in her own home. Suspicion naturally falls on Laurel's husband, Simon, who had gambling debts that only her life insurance policy could fix. But there are other rumors too . . .Among the group of six friends gathered for Alice Stone's fortieth birthday, theories abound concerning Laurel's death. Max Barbosa, police chief, has heard plenty of them, as has his longtime friend, Unitarian minister Georgia Fitzhugh. Local psychiatrist Farley Drake is privy to even more, gleaning snippets of gossip and information from his patients while closely guarding his own past. But maybe everyone in Monreith has something to hide. Because before this late-summer evening has come to a close, one of these six will be dead. And as jealousy, revenge, adultery, and greed converge, the question becomes not who among these friends might be capable of such a thing, but—who isn't?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. The Secrets We Share - A mesmerizing, twisty suspense novel perfect for fans of Mary Kubica and Riley Sager from an acclaimed author! Explore the deep bonds—and deadly secrets—between two very different sisters haunted by the crimes of their father murdered nearly twenty years earlier…At first glance, Natalie Cavanaugh and Glenn Abbott hardly look like sisters. Even off-duty, Natalie dresses like a Boston cop, preferring practical clothes and unfussy, pinned-up hair. Her younger sister, Glenn, seems tailor-made for the spotlight, from her signature red mane to her camera-ready smile. Glenn has spent years cultivating her brand through her baking blog, and with the publication of her new book, that hard work seems about to pay off. But her fans have no idea about the nightmare in Glenn and Natalie's past. Twenty years ago, their father's body was discovered in the woods behind their house. A trauma like that doesn't fit with Glenn's public image. Yet, maybe someone reading her blog does know something. There have been anonymous online messages, vague yet ominous, hinting that she's being watched. And with unsettling coincidences hitting ever closer to home, both Glenn and Natalie soon have more pressing matters to worry about, especially when a dead body is found in an abandoned building . . . Natalie is starting to wonder how much Glenn really knows about the people closest to her. But are there also secrets Natalie has yet to uncover about those she herself trusts? For two decades, she's believed their father was murdered by their neighbor, with whom he was having an affair. But if those events are connected to what's happening now, maybe there's much more that Natalie doesn't know. About their father. About their neighbors. About her friends. Maybe even about herself. But there are no secrets between sisters . . . are there?Edwin Hill is the author of LITTLE COMFORT, THE MISSING ONES and his latest Hester Thursby WATCH HER. In this week's episode of The Indy Author Podcast, Edwin Hill discusses STORY STRUCTURE AND CHARACTER MOTIVATION. We discuss the motivational continuum, and how you can move from depicting the everyday world of expectation to the world of dreams and dreads, which is where the most engaging stories take place. We discuss where the key turning points in a work of fiction occur, and how you can use them to decide where your story may need to be expanded or tightened up. And we look at movies, including THE WIZARD OF OZ and FATAL ATTRACTION, as examples of works that build tension and support character motivation through their structure. Combo? I'm a pantser for sure. I'd like to be more of a plotter, but for some reason it doesn't stick with me. 2.   Tea or Coffee? Coffee in the morning, and tea later on (in colder months).3.   Beer, Wine, or Cocktails? All of the above! I'm taking a break from wine right now, so I'm drinking more vodka and soda with my own mixers (fresh herbs and citrus). This is my usual spring/summer routine, when I'm out running more in the sun. 4.   Snacks: Sweet or Savory? Savory. I love a good dessert, but can go months without sweets. Chips on the other hand…I'll eat the whole bag and look for more. 5.   Indie Published, Traditionally Published, or Hybrid? Traditionally published. 6.   Strict Writing Schedule: Yes or No. Yes. When I'm on top of my game or on deadline, I write for 2-3 hours early mornings. The rest of the day is for working on my other jobs (Malice and Level Best)7.    Strictly Computer or Mix It Up? Computer, although I always have a journal with me to jot quick notes. I also use Google Keep and Notes for random thoughts when I'm away from my desk. And Pinterest to save articles that have kernels of inspiration in them. 8.    Daily Goal: Yes or No. Yes, although I've been working on putting less pressure on myself in all areas of life. 9.    Formal Track Progress: Yes or no. Yes, I use Scrivner which keeps my goals in front of me. 10.  Special Writing Spot? If it's dark out and everyone is asleep still, I'll write in bed, or on the couch under a blanket. I love my desk but spend a lot of time there on other work that I try to mix it up during my creative hours. Coffee shops are good for me too (when we can do that again!)11.   Writer's Block? This hasn't been a challenge for me (thank goodness). I have too many ideas. My challenge is managing time and accomplishing everything. 12.   File of Ideas: Yes or No Yes (see Pinterest comment above, and journal notes)13.   Favorite Author(s)? Watch Her is the third book in this acclaimed series. Author Edwin Hill reads to us from the beginning of the book and in the interview we discuss why he chose to write about a female protagonist, Hester's interesting approach to her relationship with her parter Morgan, and why Edwin made the choice to have the additional complication in Hester's life of the responsibility for Morgan's niece. Excerpt from Watch Her HESTER rain splattered the windshield and heat pouredfrom the vents as Hester Thursby’s non-husband, Morgan, tried to parallel park their truck on an industrial street in Jamaica Plain. A week into spring, and winter still had a hold on Boston. “Success,” he said, after the third attempt, cutting the engine and leaning across the cab to kiss Hester on the cheek. Tonight, he’d tamed his red hair and changed out of the scrubs he wore at the veterinary hospital and into a navy blue suit that fit perfectly, a suit that made its way out of his closet about once a year. “Hello, Mrs.,” he said, kissing her again. “Yuck! Quit kissing.” Hester’s five-year-old niece, Kate, glared at them from the rear cab. These days, the girl seemed to drink in everything and anything that happened around her and didn’t think twice about voicing her opinions. It was a good quality to have, though sometimes Hester had to remind herself to encourage it. Kate would finish kindergarten in a few months, and Hester knew she’d blink and soon enough the girl would be heading to college. She tried to make every moment with her niece special, even the ones that gave her a glimpse of the teenage years. “How’s this?” Morgan asked, kissing Hester with exaggerated smacks. He rolled over the seat and into the back, and kissed Kate, too, who shrieked and shoved him away. “Uncle Morgan, you are disgusting!” “Guilty as charged,” Morgan said. “And saying no is your prerogative,” Hester said. “It is!” Morgan said, having the good sense not to go in for a final smooch. “What’s prerogative?” Kate asked. “Your privilege. Your right. You’re in control of your body,” Hester said, quickly adding, “except when it comes to eating vegetables.” “None of us has a choice when it comes to vegetables,” Morgan said. “It’s pouring out,” Hester said. “We’ll have to run between the raindrops.” “You can’t run between raindrops,” Kate said. “And I can’t fool you with anything these days,” Hester said. She opened the door to the truck and leapt to the asphalt below while yanking the hood up on her blue raincoat.
