In honor of Juneteenth, we're re-releasing the audio of a live event from January 2018 at the PRX Podcast Garage, titled "Keepers of the Culture: A Celebration Of Maduna And Holmes." The evening was a celebration of two award-winning artists, collaborators, and friends, whose work was on display at the garage's exhibition space. Their sculptures, masks, and collage-based works are an exploration of ancestral voices, family histories, and the power of hope, faith and self-determination. The evening was divided into two parts: a conversation between Ekua and Tamar, which included audio produced around Ekua's collage, "All Fly Home," and an exploration of interpretation and storytelling - as applicable to art as it is to podcasting. The second part was a powerful lecture by art historian Barry Gaither, on Vuzi's work, Ekua's work, and the myriad roles artists and viewers have the joy and the responsibility of playing for and with one another. Ekua Holmes is a painter and collage artist who uses news clippings, photographs, vibrant color, and skillful composition to infuse her work with energy. Her layered, abstract creations convey a sense of unity and evoke memories that are both personal and universal. In her collages, she revisits the joy and challenges of childhood through adult eyes. These works reexamine the foundational relationships, games, and rule that we learn at an early age and apply throughout our lives. Vuzi Maduna (1940 - 2007) was a sculptor and painter who spent much of his life as an artist resident of the Gallery at the Piano Factory in Boston. Maduna began his exploration of African culture with a study of African religions which led him to further examine and interpret the traditional embodiment of belief and myth. Educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he was a member of the African American Master Artists in Residency Program of Northeastern University. His work has been exhibited in the MFA and the ICA, as well as in Tokyo and the People's Republic of China. Yet Maduna returned to the neighborhoods of his childhood to create pieces that remind us of the African heritage that many in the community share. His public installations are located in Cambridge (the Margaret Fuller House, the Cambridge Community Center, The King School) and in the Boston area, including The Judge, in Roxbury. Edmund Barry Gaither is the founding Director and Curator of the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA), an organization that he developed from a concept to an institution with collections exceeding three thousand objects and a thirty-two year history of exhibitions celebrating the visual arts heritage of black people worldwide. Gaither is also Special Consultant at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston where he has served as curator for eight exhibitions including a ground breaking show in l970, Afro-American Artists: New York and Boston. Special thanks to Kerri Hoffman and PRX, Alex Braunstein and the PRX Podcast Garage, Gina James, and WGBH.
When we relaunched in October 2019, we had no idea what kind of a season it would be. Looking back at our episodes, we're proud of the work we've done – just the two of us (and Jess!). And we're so bummed that we're leaving you right now, when all this *gestures wildly* is still unfolding, and while many of you may be hurting and needing respite in podcasts the most. We'll be back in no time, promise. With more conversations, stories and collaborations. In the meantime…you can always catch us on Twitter and Instagram (@raceandfood), where we'll continue to amplify critical discussions happening online and dole out a few of our signature side-eyes. We'll also be releasing some bonus episodes this summer – from when we were in Bermuda, meeting the locals who are reclaiming the island from the picture-perfect tourist pamphlets much of the (rich, white) world exclusively wanted to see. You can also hang out with us (over Zoom) at the PRX Podcast Garage's Virtual Wine Down on Thursday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. ET, where we'll listen to our favorite episodes, talk food justice, answer your questions, and make several toasts to the people who sustain us (psst, that's you!). Don't be a stranger! We can't wait to run into you on the Internet – and one day – out in the world. Be well, friends. See you Fall 2020.

There are few men in the Boston area who have done as much for the blind community than NBA Celtics owner and philanthropist Wyc Grousbeck. While he is a high profile owner of an NBA team it is clear from this conversation he is a devoted and loving father. In mid-November, at the PRX Podcast Garage in Boston, Dangerous Vision hosted a LIVE conversation between host Randy Cohen and Wyc Grousbeck.Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired Sassy Outwater-Wright welcomed the audience mainly from the blind community by saying "there is no right way to do blind. The Massachusetts Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired or MABVI is here to support you where you are in your journey." She went on to say there are many voices in the blind community and this is one of the reasons why she loves the podcast, there is room for discussion and dialogue. This is the first part of a two-part episode with Wyc. For more information visit www.mabvi.org/resources/dangerous-vision/

Hamlet 360: Thy Father’s Spirit is an hour-long virtual reality adaptation of Shakespeare’s play that puts you in the center of Shakespeare’s tragedy. We asked Commonwealth Shakespeare Company director Steve Maler and cinematographer Matthew Niederhauser of the virtual reality company Sensorium about creating the experience. They talk about the joys, challenges, and opportunities that come with adapting Shakespeare for virtual reality. How can VR augment the experience of watching Hamlet? What makes watching Hamlet in VR different from watching the play onstage or on your TV? Can VR make Shakespeare’s plays more accessible? Maler and Niederhauser are interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. Hamlet 360: Thy Father’s Spirit is a co-production with Google, and was created in partnership with public television station WGBH in Boston. Watch Hamlet 360: Thy Father’s Spirit at WGBH.org/Hamlet-360 or on YouTube. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published April 16, 2019. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. We are excited to speak with Jessica “Jay” Wong, a community advocate for social justice and youth programs, who understands the power in telling one’s narrative. She candidly shares her earlier struggles with cultural identity growing up as a mixed Asian in Fall River, Massachusetts, and her experience in living with epilepsy. Jessica recently joined the administrative staff of the Asian American Commission. She also serves as a Life Coach for cis-gender males/transgender youth at Roxbury Youthworks in Boston. Earlier on, she served as an AmeriCorps member for her community in Fall River, where she founded a young women’s empowerment group called W.A.V.E (Women, Action, Voice, Empowerment). In 2017, she was the youngest and first Asian American female to run for School Committee in Fall River. She supports the Nearyroth Academy of Arts as a classical/folk Cambodian dancer, and volunteers with Asian Women for Health, the Chinese Progressive Association, and the Children’s Improvement Organization in Siem Reap, Cambodia. She is a strong advocate for the Southeast Asian community in preventing deportation and addressing mental health and cultural preservation. She attended Bristol Community College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she graduated with a BA in Political Science. For this first podcast, we’re focusing on the subject of cervical cancer in recognition of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. We are excited to speak with Ellie Nguyen, who works at Asian Women for Health as the Program Manager. She is also the founder of a media production company called 3arly July, and a former board member of Queens Talk, a monthly empowerment meetup for women of color. Ellie is a storyteller at heart, and her work is often found at the intersection of creativity and community. Through her innovative work and professional role as a wellness coach, she empowers others to embrace who they are, discover their voice, and walk in their truth. Ellie facilitates cervical health workshops in the Asian community to provide culturally-relevant education on cervical health and to encourage Asian women to get their pap screening, as well as to offer support as peer health educators for family members and people in their community. Cervical cancer is ranked among the most common cancers in women worldwide. The Asian community has the highest rates of invasive cancer, but the lowest rates of screening. Editor's note: Pap smears are recommended once every 3 years, not yearly as mentioned in the podcast unless your healthcare provider suggests otherwise. -------- Thanks to our community partner, PRX Podcast Garage. Why hello startup nation, and welcome to Episode 26 of the Early Stage Podcast. If you're tired of listening to shows full of wildly successful entrepreneurs telling tales of grandeur and more interested in hearing early stage entrepreneurs share their war stories, milestones, fundraises, and pivots, then you've found a home. My name is John Valentine, or @JohnnyStartup on Twitter, and I'm your host. By day I'm scouting aerospace, space, defense, security, and transportation startups for Thales xPlor, the Boston-based innovation unit for French multi-national Thales, and by night I interview top entrepreneurs seeking the best part of the hockey stick. The February #InnoSprint experiment continues with Dylan Martin, Tech Writer for Bostinno. We'll cover FitBit's acquisition of Twine Health, Amazon's acquisition of Blink, MEMS microphone startup Vesper, and new blockchain startups Algorand and Talla. The main dish of today's podcast is an interview with RadioPublic Co-Founder and CEO Jake Shapiro. When I launched the podcast last year, I was surprised that Apple provided no listener analytics, didn't offer creative content curation for listeners in their podcast app, and most importantly, and didn't allow me any insights into who was a part of my listener community or how I could engage them. RadioPublic not only solves these challenges, but also just launched a "paid listens" program to help all podcasters get paid for their efforts. Jake was an amazing host at the PRX Podcast Garage, a converted Jiffy Lube fitted out with all the best podcasting equipment. The Garage has become a center-point for podcasting in the region, which has grown tremendously since its launch. Oh, and the audio quality for our chat is amazing. Enjoy this weeks pod!
