In this episode:             I talk about the what, why and how of leveraging the behind the scenes of being an upper elementary reading teacher to help you end the year strong-ish. We talk about: 1.What is the behind the scenes of teaching. 2. Why setting intention around the behind the scenes of teaching matters when planning to end the year strong-ish. 3.How to leverage the behind the scenes of teaching to help you end the year strong-ish. Quotables: -When I refer to the term back end I'm referring to those things that happen behind the scenes. Those things that if they don't happen then you don't actually ever get to the teaching portion of the day.   -Taking time to consider the behind the scenes of our jobs and create a plan for it helps give us some of that power back. When we feel empowered we operate from an entirely different frequency which positively impacts everyone around us.  - I like to think of self care as an act of resistance, because education is a system that will try to take all of everything you give it.   Links to resources mentioned in the podcast: Sign up for the Finish Strong-ish Workshop Here! If we try to make schools in the US more like schools in other countries, will that result in more effective practices? Why do policies work in some districts, but not others? Many ideas sound good on paper; but the people working with students or leading schools are telling a different story. That's why I invited reading specialist Jalita Johnson to episode 151 to share her expertise on these topics.Jalita Johnson is a reading specialist in the Northern Virginia area and is also a veteran, wife and mom of 4. Take a moment to list off what went right. Read these accomplishments out loud and pat yourself on the back, you deserve it. - Sometimes the most sanity saving, lifegiving practice growing thing we can do for ourselves and our students is to stay the course. EPISODE 37 It's back to school time! This time of year always makes me so excited. As fun as it is, I totally know how many tasks are on your to-do list as you plan and prepare for your new group of students. Over the years, one thing I have found to be super helpful is having a solid list of go-to resources that can used over and over again in your reading block.   Today I'm telling you all about my top five favorite resources that should be in every upper elementary reading classroom. These resources will play a crucial role in helping you to create a highly effective AND engaging reading block. What makes them so great? They work in ALL parts of your reading block - during independent practice, small group, assessments, and even homework!   The best part is that by getting your students familiar with the same type of resource, it will become easier for them to truly use them as a valuable tool to practice important skills. This is the solution you need to eliminate the number of resources that you have to go searching for online time and time again.   In this episode I share: -5 must-have resources for every upper elementary reading teacher -4 things to consider when selecting effective resources -Why you need to look for reading response resources that are open ended -How giving your students multiple opportunities to practice skills will help to grow your confidence as a teacher   Resources Mentioned: -Premade Anchor Charts -Strategy Cards -Digital Graphic Organizers -Graphic Organizer Sticky Notes -Graphic Organizers for Genre -Question Stems -Task Cards - Growing Bundle -Come join us in my NEW Facebook group, Upper Elementary Reading Teachers -SHOW NOTES: stellarteacher.com/podcast/episode37.    Connect with me: -Join my newsletter -My TPT store -stellarteachercompany.com -Instagram: @thestellarteachercompany -Facebook: The Stellar Teacher Company

Have you ever read a paper, found a tool, or heard an idea that made you stop and think, "If we could do this, we'd see truly major changes"? That's how I felt after speaking with education journalist and author Natalie Wexler about her recent book, The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America's Broken Education System - and How to Fix It. Despite the heavy emphasis on reading instruction through testing, "accountability" measures, and funding over the last two decades, reading scores have been flat. Students performing at "proficient" levels make up less than one third of the student population. Why is this? The answer appears to lie not in environmental factors or lack of resources, but in our approach to reading instruction. In this episode, Natalie shares why skills-based reading comprehension misses the mark, and new approach that can close the gap.
