In this episode, we discuss the often-misunderstood world of multisensory or multimodal instruction and why it matters so much for students with dyslexia. We talk about those kids who seem to “have it” one day and then it's gone the next, and why that's not laziness, but a sign they need stronger, better-connected pathways for memory and retrieval. We break down what multisensory teaching really is (purposeful, integrated, and grounded in research) and what it definitely isn't (learning styles, cute activities, or engagement just for show). We'll also share some practical, classroom-ready ideas you can start using right away to make instruction more efficient, memorable, and truly supportive of what your students with dyslexia need. Taped live at Japan House LA on January 10, 2026. Matt chats with Lucius front women Jess Wolfe and Holly Lessig—and Dr. Ladan Shams, UCLA professor of psychology, bioengineering, and neuroscience, to explore the science behind the band's song “Ice Cream.” Starting from the lyric “time melts away like ice cream in the sun,” the conversation moves between metaphor, memory, and the fleeting nature of love, and into the brain's remarkable ability to blend sound, sight, taste, and touch into a single experience. From rubber hands to ventriloquists, pop art to perceptual pleasure, the episode reveals how our senses collaborate, compete, and sometimes fool us—while Lucius reflects on their own multisensory artistry, coordinated visuals, and the emotional power of metaphor in their music.

Nate Pope is a neuro occupational therapist with a remarkable career spanning over 20 years. Nate's expertise is uniquely split between pediatrics, where he spent two decades as a school-based OT, and concussion recovery. Driven by seeing the challenges of post-concussion syndrome firsthand, he founded NCX Brain Recovery, a clinic dedicated to restoring hope and function. Summary Description:What if the key to healing from a brain injury isn't focusing on one thing at a time, but doing the exact opposite? In this enlightening follow-up conversation, neuro OT Nate Pope returns to dive deep into the transformative concept of multisensory integration—the practice of engaging the entire brain simultaneously to break bad neural habits and promote true healing. We explore why traditional, "siloed" therapies often fall short for those with post-concussion syndrome, strokes, and even conditions like anxiety and depression, and how Nate's clinic's intensive model is achieving remarkable recoveries. Nate explains the "just right challenge," why avoiding overstimulation can sometimes hinder recovery, and how his team carefully guides patients through the very activities that once overwhelmed them.Beyond the clinic, we discuss practical "healthy brain habits" everyone can adopt, including the profound benefits of getting outside, embracing novelty, and pursuing your passions. On this episode, Emily Kircher-Morris and Dr. Daniel Ansari discuss the complexities of math education, including the anxiety it can cause in students, the challenges of teaching methods, and the importance of understanding learning difficulties like dyscalculia. They talk about the importance of explicit instruction in math, the role of neuroscience in understanding how children learn math, and the significance of working memory and attention in math learning. Educators and parents will also get suggestions for practical strategies that will help them support students struggling with math. TAKEAWAYS Math anxiety affects both children and adults. Explicit instruction is crucial for teaching math. Dyscalculia is often misunderstood and underrecognized. Teaching methods should align with children's developmental levels. Neuroscience reveals links between spatial and numerical processing. Math anxiety does not equate to a lack of ability. Timed practice should be engaging, not competitive. Working memory plays a significant role in math learning. Multisensory approaches can enhance math instruction. Parents should seek community and resources for support. In this episodeImagine if story gathering wasn't just about words on a page or voice-to-voice. What if we could capture narratives through the stroke of a paintbrush, the sculpting of clay, or the graceful movements of dance? In this fascinating episode, we dive into this very realm with Madeleine St. John, whose vocation spans from nonprofit communications, philanthropy, community engagement, and expressive arts therapy.Madeleine introduces us to the forward-thinking concept of sensory story gathering, where all our senses come into play to share and understand human experiences. She shares practical insights on how organizations can incorporate art, movement, and other creative techniques to uncover richer, more nuanced narratives. Multisensory storytelling is a powerful alternative way for nonprofits to connect with communities, especially those who've faced trauma or struggle with traditional forms of expression. We explore how this multisensory approach allows story owners to share on their own terms.About Madeleine St. JohnMadeleine's vocation spans nonprofit communications, philanthropy, community engagement, and expressive arts therapy. Disorders of the brain are among the most challenging to treat in all of medicine. Among the challenges is access: the brain is locked away in the skull, preventing medicines from reaching their destination. To deal with this difficulty, researchers are turning to an unexpected access point to the brain: the eye. In today's episode of Beyond the Abstract, Derek and Dan discuss new papers that demonstrate neural and immune links between the eye and the brain that could soon help doctors treat diseases ranging from Alzheimer's to cancer.Articles discussedMurdock et al., Multisensory gamma stimulation promotes glymphatic clearance of amyloid. Some things aren't as good online as they are “in real life,” but multisensory learning isn't one of them! In this episode, I share how multisensory learning instruction can be carried out effectively online, specific tools to use, and examples of this in practice. When I first began my training, I thought multisensory instruction could only be done in person. Fast forward to now, I fully provide this service online! Multisensory instruction simultaneously ties in visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile instruction, also known as VAKT, so that a student uses all the pathways of the brain at the same time. Some ways this can be achieved include the use of digital letter tiles, interactive online games, skywriting, digital drawing tools, and typing. I offer two examples of this in practice, one an auditory drill and the other a grapheme learning exercise. Multisensory learning online will often look different online than in person, requiring some extra creativity, preparation, and materials, but it is an entirely impactful way to offer multisensory learning online. MyProtein is the world's largest online sports nutrition brand. So, you could say that “physical stores” aren't much of a thing at MyProtein…or at least they weren't in the past. More recently, MyProtein has invested in retail partnerships where the functional CPG brand places a limited (or exclusive) SKU range as part of bigger demand generation strategy. That could be as simple as offering a larger pack size of Clear Whey at Costco or something more unique like a healthy frozen meals licensing partnership within UK-based food warehouse Iceland. But it is a dynamic retail investment that signals MyProtein wants to drop the “online” part and simply become the world's largest sports nutrition brand. It's called Myprotein Kitchen…and it's a concept store that provides customers with multi-sensory brand touchpoints that will also the sports nutrition brand to better understand customer behavior. This is an interview with Glenn S. Cohen, the author of Neurological Intelligence: Volumes 1 and 2. Join us on a wild ride through Glenn's neurological life, as he shares various tools and techniques that have helped him and can help you too. We all have wounds from our past, inner children trapped in time, and destructive habits and thought patterns that we'd like to replace.  The tools we focus on in this episode fall primarily under the category of: visualizations & meditations that engage our various senses.  By deliberately and strategically tapping into our memories of sensory data (e.g. sight, sound, and touch), using metaphors and movie-like sequences, spicing it up with humor and goofiness, and repeating and repeating, we can find and fix various patterns in our body and brain. This can revolutionize our relationships both in our inner and outer worlds. We can learn to be less reactive, more calm, and more neurologically free. We also talk about body-based tools such as breath and movement (e.g. shaking), as well as combining them with visualization exercises (e.g. the 4-7-8 "John Coffey exercise") and with our love partner (e.g. the "mindful discussion technique"). We also discuss psychedelics (such as Ayahuasca), alcohol, IFS, NLP, attachment theory, brain waves, journaling, and comedy.Still, we will never be perfect. And this hero's journey deep into the nervous system can be dark, scary, and uncomfortable. It also requires you to temporarily let go of logic, rationality, predictability and let the wild unconscious mind roam free. That's how you will find your paths toward truth, freedom, and health. *CONNECT W/ GLENN S. A multi-sensory brand experience creates a stronger emotional connection, and that's why I think GHOST's next big move should be building a curated lifestyle shop on the ground floor of its Chicago headquarters. While I'll provide historical context for that GHOST Lifestyle prediction, it all surrounded the pre-launch belief that GHOST Energy would be a mega success. That opened up GHOST Lifestyle to two things: a broader mainstream consumer would be introduced to brand, and it opened GHOST up to the age-old problem within the CPG industry…which is that scaling your brand usually involves onboarding more intermediaries. The fact is that creating long-term close bonds between customers and CPG brands isn't easy given the nature of the industry. The examples are plentiful within the CPG industry, but the bigger a brand gets, typically the further it wrongfully distances itself from its most passionate customer cohorts. And that's becoming a greater issue in today's market where a higher percentage of customers expect CPG brands to add value to their lives beyond simply providing a great product. Yes, some just want to buy a great product that's available at the time of need for a fair price, but GHOST built its business by having intimate relationships with customers. So, how do you keep that going when your energy drink will soon be in 100K+ retail locations that are being serviced by intermediaries or intermediaries of intermediaries? You need to take that already tight brand strategy and supercharge every brand touchpoint by viewing them through a multisensory lens. I'll use GHOST as a pseudo case study to help you better understand the growing strategic need for multi-sensory brand touchpoints against the increasingly competitive functional CPG categorical backdrop. This is our submission for the “INTENSE INTERIORS – 2023 Architecture and Film Symposium”. It was hosted by Toronto Metropolitan University's Creative School's Interior Design department on May 6 & 7, 2023. Our piece is in the form of an experimental audio paper. “Outlook - A Multisensory Installation” explores the concept of mental mapping: a term blind people use that defines the ability to picture or imagine things in the world around us or us and where we are located in a space. Throughout the experimental audio paper, we explore the idea that the visual isn't the only best way of getting a clear picture of where we are in space, that tactile maps are one way of understanding an interior and out into the exterior world. The audio paper was presented alongside an in house installation including tactile maps, accessible Purdys braille box of chocolates with legend, iPhone for touch screen demonstration, and 3D printed models during the symposium on May 7, 2023. It was an honour to be included in this symposium, to share our perspectives as two blind Canadians. Thanks to co-chairs: Lorella Di Cintio, PhD and Vahid Vahdat, PhD. Meta has unveiled an open-source AI research project, ImageBind, which can combine six types of data—visual, audio, text, depth, temperature, and movement—into a single multidimensional index, pushing the boundaries of generative AI systems. This research underscores Meta's commitment to sharing AI advancements while competitors like OpenAI and Google become more closed-off. ImageBind is the first AI model to integrate this variety of data into one "embedding space", a concept crucial to the explosion of generative AI technologies. For instance, AI image generators like DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney establish links between text and images during training, facilitating image creation based on textual cues. ImageBind builds on this, broadening the data spectrum. This model could potentially enable future AI systems to cross-reference various data, akin to current text-input-based AI. Imagine a VR device that generates not only audio-visual input but also simulates environmental and physical conditions based on this data. However, this is purely speculative at this point. Meta has hinted at the possibility of adding other sensory inputs like touch, speech, smell, and brain fMRI signals to future models. They claim this would bring machines closer to human-like, holistic learning from diverse information sources. Despite the potential, immediate applications of such research will likely be more modest. Previous works, like Meta's text-to-video AI model, indicate that future iterations could incorporate more diverse data streams. This research is particularly notable as Meta continues to endorse open-sourcing in AI, a practice under increased scrutiny. Critics argue that open-sourcing enables plagiarism and misuse of advanced AI models. Supporters, however, believe it promotes system transparency, helps rectify faults, and can even offer commercial benefits by engaging third-party developers in improvements. Despite setbacks like the leak of its LLaMA language model, Meta remains committed to the open-source approach. Its relatively lower commercial success in AI compared to competitors has, to some extent, facilitated this stance. With ImageBind, Meta affirms its open-source strategy. ------------------------- Get our Daily AI Newsletter: https://AIBox.ai Join our ChatGPT Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/739308654562189/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaeden_ai
