Season 6 Episode 38: In this podcast, Pete Codella, managing director of business services at the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity, talks with Kim Fischer, executive vice president of marketing and communications, Tomas Caceres, senior director of strategic community engagement at Waterford, and Anju Thapaliya UPSTART program manager at GOEO. Fischer, Caceres, and Thapaliya discuss the UPSTART Program, an online educational tool that provides preschool children with foundational skills in reading, math, and science. This tool is made possible through state funding and a partnership with Waterford. UPSTART collaborates with local organizations to extend its reach in Utah's rural, refugee, and Indigenous communities. Delivering this tool in homes and childcare settings helps UPSTART strengthen families and boost community engagement, giving young children a strong start in learning and development. The Waterford team discusses its future goals to expand access to underserved communities, increase enrollment, and build partnerships to ensure all children have an early learning foundation. Fischer emphasizes that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed inequities in access to digital resources, affecting early learning and literacy nationwide, especially for marginalized communities. They discuss how UPSTART addresses these gaps by providing adaptive learning tools, a dashboard for tracking progress, and extensive family support.

In this 'Quick Tips' episode (S2 E32), we delve into the critical role of foundational skills in achieving success. While success is a goal for many, it often remains elusive. We explore how strong foundational skills serve as the building blocks for success in any area of life and discuss their importance in reaching our goals. Foundational skills act as the cornerstone for acquiring new abilities. They form the bedrock upon which all other skills are built. For instance, to excel in writing, one must possess a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Without these fundamental skills, writing becomes challenging. Similarly, to thrive as an entrepreneur, a strong base in business, finance, and marketing is essential. One of the remarkable aspects of foundational skills is their transferability. Once acquired, these skills can be applied across various domains. For example, excellent communication skills serve us not only in professional settings but also in personal relationships. This versatility enhances the value of foundational skills, enabling success in different areas of life. Furthermore, foundational skills facilitate rapid learning. With a solid foundation, acquiring new skills becomes easier and faster due to the understanding of the underlying principles. This emphasizes the significance of nurturing foundational skills, even when focusing on advanced abilities. Another advantage of foundational skills is their problem-solving capacity. A strong foundation in a particular skill equips individuals with the ability to identify and solve related challenges. By comprehending the underlying concepts, problem-solving becomes more effective. Lastly, foundational skills are indispensable for long-term success. While short-term success may be possible without them, sustained success becomes significantly more challenging. Foundational skills provide the basis for further growth and progress, making them crucial for achieving lasting success. To conclude, nurturing foundational skills is paramount for success in any endeavor. These skills form the basis for learning, problem-solving, and long-term achievement. Whether aspiring to be a writer, an entrepreneur, or pursuing any other goal, prioritizing the development of foundational skills will yield significant rewards in the journey towards success. “MMD (or mirror movement development) is the missing pillar of longevity along side nutrition and exercise” Watch this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/g03RUDCz7kk On this episode #284 we will cover: ✔︎ What is Mirror Movement Development (MMD) ✔︎ How does MMD improve body realignment, spatial awareness, balance and peak performance? ✔︎ Famous people who have embraced dual-dominance. ✔︎ How to begin using this practice for improved resilience, body re-alignment, health and brain benefits. Today's episode #284, we will be speaking with Jim Houliston, a Philadelphia-based, dual dominant artist, athlete, educator, and author of the world's first biscriptal book—BIG3MMD: History's Ambidextrous and the Benefits of Mirror Movement Development. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we cover the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace) with tools, ideas and strategies that we can all use for immediate results. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and educator with a passion for learning specifically on the topics of health, wellbeing and productivity. When Jim first reached out to me, he let me know about the neurological, longevity, body realignment, spatial awareness, balance, and peak performance benefits that come from practicing mirror movement development (MMD) and I stopped and wondered what is MMD and was intrigued to learn more. I don't know anything about this topic, but after years of working out (mostly hiking and trail running) I have certain aches and pains that never go away. I also want to keep the high level of balance that I have now, into the next 20 years, so I can keep doing the activities I love, as I'm getting older. I wonder: How does what Jim has discovered improve body realignment, spatial awareness, balance and peak performance? How could I implement this idea? How soon would I notice a benefit? How exactly did he discover this idea? Let's meet Jim Houliston, and learn about MMD and how this idea that he has discovered could take our productivity to new heights. Welcome Jim! Thanks so much for coming on the podcast. This is a FIRST for me today as I know absolutely nothing about what you will be sharing with us today, so I hope as we go through the questions that we can tie your work with our Season Theme of “Going Back to the Basics” or the Foundational Skills in order to accelerate our results. 1. For our listeners right now they very well could be hearing about MMD (Mirror Movement Development) for the first time, what is MMD? 2. What is the layman's Science behind MMD and how you discovered this? 2B: Why don't most people practice this, and why does it feel so weird? 2C: How do you begin practicing MMD? 3. What are some of the Benefits of MMD, specifically, how does this practice impact your brain, and what specific region of your brain have you seen improvements with? 4. You list a bunch of famous MMD practitioners in your book, who are some of your favorites and why? 4B: How did you come up with this concept? 5. What criticism have your received? 6. Where do you see this going? What are your dreams with promoting MMD? 7. Final Thoughts? Thank you Jim for coming on the podcast to open my eyes to something I've never even thought about. "Soft skills, we need people with soft skills, people who can connect and collaborate." *hires employee with only technical qualifications* What is it about humans that we generally thrive when working with one another? There's camaraderie, power in numbers, diversity of thought, and... purpose. It's a wonderful experience to bring the right people to a conversation. The team is thriving, work is getting done, and the initiative is advancing toward the goal. In some cultures, more is better so... We've got a good thing going, let's get more people in on this or Super Boss will be very cranky if they're not involved. No, we all know they won't actively contribute, will miss most of the meetings, and will throw stink bombs in the meetings they do attend, but they need to be at the table. Good collaboration requires clarity of thought. Who NEEDS to be included to advance the goal? If someone is to be included by virtue of title or disposition, why? If they cannot or will not contribute, do they need to be there? Being able to identify the needs and then get the right people involved requires soft skills, otherwise and more accurately known as Foundational Skills or Professional Skills. There's nothing soft about telling your boss you don't need them at the next meeting; it requires knowledge of effective communication in a professional setting; sound a little broad, right, it's difficult but necessary. Join the discussion as No More Leadership BS explores the highs and lows of collaboration and how you can make your next collaborative effort successful.

Many times, assessments and standardized tests don't tell the whole story of the learner. So, what do you do when you're overwhelmed with where to start with a younger nonspeaking or autistic learner. When I first started my career I remember being discouraged at times and with a lack of the resources available unlike what we have today, I had to find the information myself and blaze that trail. Today I want to share how I get started with these learners, to help them find their voice and start communicating today. Top 8 Foundational skills for young autistic learners: 1. Joint Attention - There is power in shared activities, a time that generates spontaneous communication. Both the therapist and the learner in an activity surrounding Literacy, Music, or Play. Check out the episode for my list of favorites!2. Imitation - Keep it fun and functional by practicing during play. The key is playing with similar items in a way that the child will want to repeat. For example, role-play with a baby doll.3. Requesting - Work on meaningful words that can make communication powerful for a student's real life. Specific requesting skills teach students that communicating can get them something!4. Matching - There are so many great skills that come along with matching like scanning and engagement. I share a bit about how I use my favorite resource and modify matching games to work with the students' level.5. Play - Play routines and leisure skills are SO important. Work on playing with fun games, shape sorting, and building around their language level.6. Following One-Step Directions - This is critical not only in school but at home. Be sure to think about your kids and how their communication impacts their day outside of the therapy room. Examples: “Put your coat on” “Stand by the door” etc.7. Labeling - Students should be comfortable talking about things in their environment. Be aware of your students' level and chronological age, is it appropriate to use flashcards? Or is it important to work on it during play?8. Fill in the Blank - “Ready…Set….___” This skill starts with, “I say something, you say something”, which opens the door for so much communication, like asking and answering questions! All of my advice today comes from my experience in private practice, where I am afforded the opportunity to work one on one. Be sure to take into account all of your circumstances, therapy opportunities, and resources when planning to individualize these skills to your students. In my 20 years of experience, I have divided my time between school-based and private setting therapy. I have dedicated my career to autistic learners and today I want to share my TOP TEN tips on developing an IEP and conducting a successful smooth IEP meeting. These tips will ensure you are prepared, remain calm, and work to the benefit of the student, especially when working on more difficult cases for students who are non-typical or non-speaking.Record Review - The last comprehensive evaluation is very important. Has your student had an evaluation from an outside provider? What has the student previously worked on? Do they have prior IEPs and what do they look like?New Evaluations - What is the right evaluation for the student? My personal favorite is the VB-MAPP, I love the way it looks at language and communication. I also recommend the Functional Communication Profile - Revised, and the Assessment of Functional Living Skills is great for older students. Additionally, there are Speech Therapy Tests such as the Receptive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test, The Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test, and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals. Communicate with ALL Members of the Team - This includes teachers, parents, school-based providers, and any outside providers.Questions for Developing Goals - Do the targets take the learner's chronological age into account? Are the goals informed by typical development? Are these goals ambitious enough? How will achieving these goals improve the learner's quality of life? Are major barriers to progress considered? Are safety risks addressed?Shared Goals - The speech therapist collaborates with the teacher on speech goals. The goal is developed together and practice is embedded throughout the learner's day. For example, A Cooperative Leisure goal worked on across both spaces, in therapy, and in the general classroom. Specific, Measurable, and Consistent Goals - Ask yourself if the goals are specific? Are they measurable? And if another teacher, parent, or professional read them, would they make sense? Foundational Skills are important for younger, nonspeaking learners. These can include joint attention, imitation, requesting, and matching. For older students, ask can goals be tied to leisure and vocation.Data Collection - Consider how you're going to take data while you're writing the goals.Baseline Data - For autistic learners especially, be sure to include baseline data in the present section of the IEP. Baseline data is crucial to inform goals and to show progress.Send a Draft Home - Get Feedback! Some parents may have lawyers, advocates, outside providers, etc. It is important to make sure all members of the team are aware of the IEP goals and incorporate and embed the feedback that you can.Hold the Meeting, Work with the Team, and Create an Amazing Plan for your Students!#austism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:Top 10 Tips for a successful IEP Process.Helpful tips and strategies to use today. All about school-based IEP development for autistic learners.Working on an IEP with a large team. How to handle non-typical or difficult situations in an IEP meeting.Mentioned In This Episode: ABA Speech: HomeStart Communicating Today Live

Good school practices are the key to helping build better educational systems, says Renaud Comba, research manager at UNICEF, but detecting exemplary school practices is easier said than done:“For the first time we are paying attention to the already created, contextualized, cost effective local solutions that local stakeholders have created through practice and through understanding where they live and their context to really address global education challenges.” - Renaud We also hear from three teachers trying to develop good creative practices in their daily work with children. First off we meet Andrea from Montevideo in Uruguay who teaches strong basic numeracy skills through play and experiential learning:“In the pedagogy of our school it is very important to guide the learning development with lived experiences that include a body and sensorial experience….In the multiplication table, every scale is represented by an animal” - AndreaNext we hear from hear from Suzie in Wyoming who explains the different dimensions of foundational skills when teaching visually impaired children: “All things that people know by seeing not by doing we have to give [visually impaired] kids the experiences too and then from there we can learn the literacy piece because it will then be more meaningful and motivating.” - SuzieWe also meet Manda, a traveling teacher working in various schools in California, who shares how she supports the development of foundational skills with visually impaired children:“So many of these skills that are taught in school are taught visually… sighted children are surrounded by letters…they also have access to social skills through seeing, like body language and visual expressions.” - MandaAnd finally we hear from Francis Bizoza, a teacher trainer from Uganda, who stresses the need for teachers to motivate reluctant young people:“When helping them understand it is important for you to be able to read, it is important for you to write well showing them that in their day to day life these are things we do daily, we read, we comprehend and we listen.” - FrancisOn today's podcast:The Data Must SpeakThe relevance of learning through playLearning numbers through bodily experiencesThe learning needs of visually impaired childrenThe importance of improving young people's motivation for learningLinks:Renaud CombaData Must Speak (UNICEF)To find out more about today's guests, and for more episodes featuring other teachers and their stories, visit https://bold.expert/podcasts/bold-podcast-series2
Investing in children's foundational educational skills is key to their learning and development, as these skills are the building blocks for other life skills and further education, says Professor Ricardo Sabates, a researcher dedicated to equipping out-of-school children in the global south with basic numeracy, reading and writing skills.“One of the challenges that we have is that when children are not able to reach these foundational skills, when the curriculum that the teachers are trying to teach is further advanced than the capabilities and understanding of concepts of these children, then actually the curriculum is only being able to be followed by 10 percent of the children in the classroom.” - RicardoWhile some children don't have the foundational skills they need to make learning happen, for others, the language they speak at home isn't the language of instruction at school, which can lead to an even wider educational gulf developing. This is something that Nadira, a social science teacher working in a multilingual community in South Africa, is very conscious about: “What we find amongst our learners in the rural parts of our province is that they have a low self esteem because they do not have that parental support or they do not have that confidence that's built up from birth. Hence, the learners are very very afraid when it comes to speaking English.” - NadiraFinally, we hear about the experience of Manu, a French primary school teacher who uses innovative project-based learning approaches to strengthen his students' motivation in learning how to read and write. “A child needs to make sense of what he's doing. Why he writes, why he reads, what is the meaning of all that? The child needs to know why we ask him those things, because he needs to own his learning process.” - ManuOn today's podcast:The importance of foundational skillsThe role of educators and teachers in accelerated learning interventions Tackling the gendered component of educationThe centrality of motivation and self esteem in children's learningLinks:Ricardo SabatesTo find out more about today's guests, and for more episodes featuring other teachers and their stories, visit https://bold.expert/podcasts/bold-podcast-series2

Teacher, how are your students doing with their foundational skills? In today's episode, I'm going to share a real teacher struggle moment I had recently. The short version is my students did NOT master CVC words after I taught them with our district's curriculum. So, it was time to go back to my tried and true method: routines. Routines are incredibly powerful. With a little time every day, we can practice the most important concepts, and our students can master them. Here's how I'm doing it!Links in today's epiosde:Today's blog postPhast Phonics routineDaily Write It sentence routine

Ineffective communication in all humans, will affect how we behave. Children who cannot communicate, do not have the life experience to handle their feelings and situations and that presents in their behavior. Ashley Scott, SLP-BCBA, shares in this episode the ongoing and intentional processes of building expressive language in children. There is a difference between having vocabulary and functional language skills. A child may be able to count, say their ABCs, or identify color, but they may not be able to communicate. So they may know the color orange, but if they want an orange, can they say “mommy I want an orange”. Functional language is not just talking but using words to request, negotiate, and communicate with their parents and peers. It is not cut and dry, “a kid can talk so they start talking”. If you are working on getting a child to talk, there are so many things that need to be in place, so it is important to have less focus on words and more focus on foundational skills as simple as learning to sit. Ashley's advice for parents is to ask fewer questions. Narrating is a key to building language skills and understanding the meaning behind words. Ask less questions and comment and narrate everything as you and your child are doing it. Pair everything you're doing with real words, to build connections between the activity or item and the word. We want to expose kids to a rich vocabulary, but when kids aren't communicating, keep words simple. They don't have to be long sentences, but instead small phrases and keywords. For example, you don't need to say “you're putting on your shoes” instead hold and point to the shoes and say “shoes on” or you don't need to say “let's open the door now” instead say “open” but say it a few times, clear and exaggerated. One of Ashley's big questions for therapists and parents is, “how much are you facilitating?” Wait time is a big piece. It is critical to give children time to process and respond. One thing Ashley said that makes so much sense is working on language is an art form, a unique balance between foundational skills, modeling, narrating, and allowing silent time for processing language. Another key part of therapy is that the skills a child can perform in therapy should be able to be performed, across all of their environments and with all people they interact with. It's important to create opportunities for communication. This differentiates the difference between can't do or won't do. Reinforcement is critical, modeling what it looks like to respond to a request. Repeating a request over and over is not effective. Say it one time, and if they do not comply, physically complete the request with them. For example, you don't need to say come here over and over. If they do not come the first time, show them what coming here looks like. Building expressive language is about building independence. There are so many teaching opportunities that are missed because as adults we meet the child's needs that they can do themselves and we do not give them the opportunity to ask for help or demonstrate their knowledge. The biggest takeaway for parents and professionals here is language and communication is more than just talking. #autism #speechtherapy What's Inside:Getting started with expressive language delays.Real tips and strategies for parents and professionals. The art form of building expressive language.Building language happens in more than just the therapy room. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, for Brain Fact Friday and episode #139 on “The Fascinating Discoveries that Link Math, Literacy and the Brain Together.” If you are listening on iTunes, click here to see the images in the show notes. I'm Andrea Samadi, author and educator from Toronto, Canada, now living in the United States, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and modern workplaces of the future. If you have been listening to our podcast, you will know that we've uncovered that if we want to improve our social and emotional skills, and experience success in our work and personal lives, it all begins with an understanding of our brain. Our goal with this podcast is to bring the most current neuroscience research to you and make it applicable in your life whether you are a teacher in the classroom, a parent homeschooling, or using these ideas to improve productivity and results in your workplace. The idea is that these strategies will give you a new angle and provide you with a new way of looking at learning, results and productivity, with the brain in mind. As I am researching and uncovering new ideas, I'm also implementing them myself, and making connections to past speakers, so that we can all benefit from the research that is emerging in this new field of educational neuroscience. I want to thank the listeners who have sent me messages through social media[i] about how you are using these ideas in your schools, community and personal lives. It does help to know that these episodes are useful, and how you are using this information, and that it's not just me who finds the intricacies of the brain and learning to be fascinating. Thanks so much for the messages. Back to this week's Brain Fact Friday. DID YOU KNOW: There is a test called the finger gnosis test[ii] (a child holds their fingers under the table and has to tell you which fingers you touch) and “this test is a strong predictor of future mathematical ability” (Dr. Ansari taught us this in our last episode) and that “finger movement and counting are closely associated with the brain?” (David Sousa). David A Sousa in his book How the Brain Learns Mathematics found “that the region of the brain that controls finger movement is the same region associated with counting” [iii] and he thought it was interesting that finger movement and counting are closely associated in the brain. I asked Dr. Ansari what he thought about this, and he agreed there might be something to what David Sousa is thinking. This might explain why Dyslexia (a learning disorder that involves a difficulty with reading) and Dyscalculia (a math learning disability where children struggle with number sense) are so closely related. Dr. Ansari mentioned that 50% of children who struggle with math, also struggle with reading. The two go hand in hand. We did cover the societal significance of our children or students learning to read proficiently by 3rd grade with last week's Brain Fact Friday, episode #137[iv] where we examined the math learning disability dyscalculia, that's closely related to dyslexia, but here's a quick reminder of the importance of knowing why literacy is so important, especially understanding the implications of NOT staying on top of our children/students who might be struggling with the foundations of reading, or mathematics, at an early age. When we look at the statistics, the importance of developing the foundational skills of literacy is clear. Just a reminder: 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. Over 70% of America's inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level. 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read at all. Students who don't read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times likelier to drop out of school. Nearly 85% of the juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, proving that there is a close relationship between illiteracy and crime. When researching Dr. Ansari, I came across similar statistics for students who did not have the foundational skills in mathematics. Did you know that: “Low numeracy skills are associated with physical illness, depression and incarceration?” (Bynner and Parsons 2005)[v] Students with poor numerical and mathematical skills are more likely to default on their mortgage payments than those with strong mathematical skills “(Gerardi, Goetta and Meier 2013).[vi] Dr. Daniel Ansari's interview #138[vii] provided many insights of the importance of understanding how the brain learns, but one of the most profound analogies he gave was about the importance of looking at the foundational competencies in mathematics to help students “build a solid foundation to their learning”[viii] so they build a strong foundation that is not at risk of collapsing. The Foundational Skills of Reading and Mathematics There is a clear case for ensuring our students are proficient readers by 3rd grade, and we have just started to dive deep into strategies for struggling readers with episode #136 with the case study of Lois Letchford[ix] and how she helped her son to overcome dyslexia and graduate with his Ph.D. from Oxford University. Since this episode was released, I have had many emails with stories and case studies to support innovation in this field. Like Dr. Burton Clark[x], who sent me his story about beating the odds and overcoming dyslexia in the field of firefighting. We also can see the importance of developing the foundational skills in mathematics. The core of reading, Dr. Ansari explains is “connecting sounds to letters” or phonemic awareness that David Sousa explains in depth in his “How the Brain Learns to Read” series and on episode #78[xi] but the core of math, Dr. Ansari reminds us is “connecting quantity to symbols” (or knowing that 3 apples is also three apples). What Are the Foundational Reading Skills That Should Be in Place By 3rd Grade? David Sousa's How the Brain Learns to Read[xii] has a clear list on page 208, reminding us that “Teachers make a difference. Students of experienced teachers with knowledge of scientifically-based methods had higher reading achievement scores than students of inexperienced teachers.” (David A Sousa) Most researchers agree that these skills must be in place by 3rd grade to ensure students will be able to cope with the increased difficulty in future grades. They must: Master the alphabet Read fluently Understand what students are reading Have strategies to sound out unfamiliar words Be confident in spelling Read almost any book in the elementary school library Write almost anything that falls within a child's knowledge and experience Have an appetite for reading and writing Now we learned from our interview #136 with Lois Letchford that learning to read doesn't come naturally for some children. It's a serious struggle. But her episode focused on some strategies to help the students who do struggle with reading, and our next interview coming in the third week of June that will feature Michal Ricca[xiii], the Founder of the Now I Can Read Program, from Williston, VT (USA) who has in the past 2 decades, taught over 1,000 students how to read. She will share why she saw the need to create an online reading program for students that has greatly expanded her reach beyond what she was able to do working with students one on one. Her program helps students with more than reading, but also with the social and emotional aspect that comes along with a student who is struggling, and who just wants to fit in with the other children in their class. Instructional Strategies to Help Improve Reading Comprehension from David Sousa's How the Brain Learns to Read (Page 99-101). Using graphic organizers Asking questions Summarizing Mental imagery Paraphrasing What Are the Foundational Mathematical Skills That Should Be in Place By 3rd Grade? When looking at the foundations to math that Dr. Ansari thinks are important to be in place by 3rd grade, he reminded me that math is much more complicated than reading, and that many skills need to be in place, but he did think that number sense is very important. Students should understand: Quantities Concepts like more or less Larger and smaller Understanding the order in a line (1st, 2nd, 3rd) Understand that symbols like 7 represent quantities and mean the same thing as seven. Making number comparisons (like 12 is greater than 10) Recognizing relationships between single items and groups of items (seven means one group of seven items) Understand fractions, proportions, multiplying and dividing Also the gradual progress of finger counting to the mental process of adding/subtraction numbers Instructional Strategies Dr. Ansari mentioned the 6 evidence-based strategies from the most recent report Assisting Struggling Students with Mathematics.[xiv] I will put the image of the 6 strategies in the show notes, but thought it was important to mention the importance of using number lines, since any time an abstract concept can be visualized, it makes it easier for the student to understand. Lois Letchford mentioned this with her work with her son, and that using a number line with the dates brought the maps they were studying to life. REVIEW and CONCLUSION with This WEEK'S BRAIN FACT FRIDAY David Souza uncovered finger movement and counting to be closely associated in the brain and Dr. Ansari spoke about finger gnosis and mathematical ability[xv] and that it is widely known finger gnosis (a child holds their hand under a table and someone touches their fingers, then asks, “which finger did I touch?” The ability to perform this test well is a strong predictor of future mathematical ability. He also mentioned that even before brain scans, they knew from patients who had damage to the left hemisphere of the brain, the left angular gyrus, they became terrible at finger gnosis and terrible at math. If you look at the diagram of the brain in the show notes, you will see how close the angular gyrus is to the Wernicke's area (the part of the brain that controls speech) and the Broca's area (also linked to speech production). This is where Dr. Ansari says “we know that there's a connection here, but we just don't know the mechanism” which to me is the fascinating part of this work. Maybe next year, or maybe in 3 years' time, neuroscience advancements will be made to show exactly what is happening in the brain when we are counting and using our fingers, but for now, we just know there is a connection, but what it is, remains to be discovered. I hope today's Brain Fact Friday has made you think, like it has opened up my mind, to all the possibilities that exist when we begin to study and learn this powerful topic of the human brain. The next time you use your fingers to count something, or you watch someone else doing this, remember that what you are saying and counting with your fingers are firing off pathways in your brain that are very closely connected. I know we can't see this happening, but we can get a clear image of this happening, and with time, we will learn even more about our brain, learning and ways we can use this information to improve our productive and results. See you next week. The Importance of The Foundational Skills: Literacy and Mathematics Which brings us to this week's Brain Fact Friday and the connections I made while recording episode #136[i] with Lois Letchford, and her son who failed first grade in 1994 when testing revealed he could only read 10 words, had no strengths and a low IQ and was clearly struggling with his academics in his early years. Thank goodness his Mother figured out that he needed to learn how to read with different learning strategies that you can learn about in episode #136, and see how her son defied the odds he was given at an early age and graduated from Oxford University with his Ph.D. What would have happened to Nicholas Letchford if he didn't have such a happy ending to his story? If he did not find a different way to build those foundational skills that he needed for literacy achievement? I remembered a webinar I prepared for the educational publisher, Voyager Sopris Learning in 2018 on “Nine Brain-Based Strategies to Skyrocket Literacy Achievement”[ii] and in the introduction to this webinar, I talk about the U.S. statistics that emphasize the importance of our children learning to read proficiently by 3rd grade. Did you know that: 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. More than 60% of all inmates are functionally illiterate. And these shocking statistics lead to high drop-out rates, low graduation rates and college completion, illiteracy, incarceration, and welfare, proving that when a student is struggling with their reading, there is so much more at stake than what meets the eye. Then I began researching for episode #138 with Dr. Daniel Ansari, a professor, and Canada Research Chair[iii] in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning in the Department of Psychology and the Brain in Mind Institute[iv] at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario where he heads the Numerical Cognition Laboratory[v] and I learned from Dr. Ansari that in addition to the importance of developing these foundational reading skills, he emphasized the importance of developing the foundational skills in numeracy and math saying that “low numeracy skills is associated with physical illness, depression and incarceration”[vi] and even that “students with poor math skills were likely to default on their mortgage”[vii] later in life. This builds a clear case for the need for intervention if a student is struggling with reading or math in their early years. For this week's Brain Fact Friday, I am sure you have heard of the term dyslexia for students who have difficulty with reading, problems with spelling and mispronunciation of words, but did you know there was a term like this for those who have specific difficulties learning mathematics? Dyscalculia: The Math Learning Disability Dyscalculia: “is a math learning disability that impairs an individual's ability to learn number-related concepts, perform accurate math calculations, reason and problem solve, and perform other basic math skills”[viii] and usually “co-occurs with dyslexia.”[ix] I will dive deeper into this brain-based disorder on my interview with Dr. Ansari next week, but until then, if you want to learn more about recognizing the signs and symptoms of dyscalculia, with engaging and fun strategies to help your students or children learn mathematics, you can learn more with these resources below. To learn more about Dyscalculia, watch the video with Dr. Ansari here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRJS-jeZ7Is You will learn: What is Dyscalculia?[x] Areas of difficulty (seeing how numbers fit together, counting, calculating, recalling math facts, using concepts like less than, greater than, reading a clock, working with money, not able to count backwards reliably, tendency not to notice patterns, inability to manage time in daily life). Strategies to help students learn: Using manipulatives for counting, number lines and other visual tools to help solve problems and provide students with extra time so they can organize their thinking. Educational Companies: Like ETA Cuisenaire (now Hand2Mind)[xi] who have created what they call “Cuisenaire Rods[xii]” to help students learn math in a more fun and enjoyable way. Remember that students who have learning challenges like dyslexia with reading, or dyscalculia with math, can be just as successful in their life, future, and careers as those who do not have these challenges. Just ask Alexander Graham Bell, Albert Einstein, John Lennon, Muhammed Ali, Steven Spielberg, Henry Winkler, Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Walt Disney, Jay Leno and Keira Knightly, who all grew up with dyslexia and it was noted that Bill Gates, Henry Winkler, Cher, Mary Tyler Moore, and Benjamin Franklin also had dyscalculia. Like we saw in episode #136 with Lois Letchford's son Nicholas, children can be extremely successful in their life and future, if they are given the learning strategies that they need to help them to succeed whether it's with learning to read, or with mathematics. REVIEW OF THIS WEEK'S BRAIN FACT FRIDAY: Dyscalculia: “is a common math learning disability that impairs an individual's ability to learn number-related concepts, perform accurate math calculations, reason and problem solve, and perform other basic math skills”[xiii] and usually “co-occurs with dyslexia.”[xiv] Stay tuned for episode #138 with Dr. Daniel Ansari, who I know will open our eyes with new connections with the neuroscience of learning. See you next week. Is it even possible for an eighteen-year-old to get managerial-level experience that is typically available to people in their mid-thirties? On today’s show, we interviewed UMass student Matt Mongiat. Matt worked with YEAA from 2018-2020 and currently, he is in charge of recruiting for the wellness tracking company, Vessel Health. On today’s show, Matt shares his distilled wisdom on entrepreneurship, leadership, and taking the path less trodden. From 2018 to 2020, Matt interned with YEAA, and this experience changed him completely as an individual. Before starting his internship, Matt was painfully introverted and admittedly, he found his progress stunted because of his fixed mindset. As a YEAA intern, Matt got the opportunity that is available to very few nineteen-year-olds. In this first year, Matt ran a $100,000 business that earned profits of $15,000. He significantly expanded operations in his second year when he managed and coached three rookie managers. As a district manager, Matt’s responsibilities expanded significantly as he ended up managing a $250,000 painting operation. One of the primary things that attracted Matt to the YEAA internship was the exceptional opportunity to differentiate himself. The internship helped Matt hone his leadership skills while being his own boss. He also built a powerful network of life-long friends that are standing him through thick and thin. Towards the end of the show, Matt talks about his current employer, Vessel Health. You will learn how Vessel is revolutionizing the way people track their health. Matt also shares how Vessel plans on achieving its audacious goal of hitting a billion-dollar valuation. Enjoy! Resources Vessel Health Young Entrepreneurs Across America
Shannon and Mary discuss another pillar in the Balanced Literacy Series: Shared Reading. Shared reading is interactive reading with teacher guided support. This is essential for helping struggling readers build their fluency and expression as well as explicitly modeling how proficient readers approach text. It can be done in whole group, small group, or with individualized instruction. Sometimes you will see shared reading experiences modeled with big books or books that are projected for the whole class to share.
