Episode 55: Developing a Change Mindset Identify common obstacles to change. “Everything changes and nothing remains still, and you cannot step twice into the same stream.” - Heraclitus Recognize the common obstacles individuals and organizations face when making changes. Fear of failure Resistance to change Rusty Nail Story: A lot of people are experiencing the comfort of the status quo: Even if the current situation is not ideal, people may feel comfortable with it because it is familiar.. Learning agility can help leaders grow and adapt in three ways: Increase problem-solving skills Improve the ability to collaborate Navigate complex and uncertain situations. Implement a change mindset. Concrete strategies and techniques to try in order to become more comfortable with change and develop a growth mindset. Practicing mindfulness Take a few deep breaths before responding to a situation. Help you to respond more calmly and thoughtfully to difficult situations at work Help you to feel more grounded and centered throughout the day. Seeking out new learning opportunities Start by setting goals for yourself and seeking out opportunities to learn and grow. Asking for feedback from others. You can identify areas where you may be falling short and make adjustments to improve your performance. Help you build stronger relationships with your colleagues and supervisors by demonstrating a willingness to learn and grow. MO's Final Thoughts Never go it alone. Surround yourself with like-minded colleagues who share your commitment to develop and Change Mindset. Seek out opportunities to collaborate with others, share knowledge and ideas, and support each other in your professional development. This can lead to increased creativity, innovation, and productivity, and help you and your colleagues achieve your goals and succeed in your careers. None of this stuff is easy, but that's why it's so important. Give it a shot. Make the change in your mindset, and watch those around you get better as well. And that's what leadership is about!

James Anderson is an Australian-based international speaker, author and educator who is passionate about helping fellow educators develop students as better learners. Originally a teacher and school leader, for the past 20 years, James has been working with schools to make classrooms more thoughtful places. He challenges teachers to think deeply about their own Mindsets and how their beliefs are communicated to students in often subtle and unintended ways.James's work combines Growth Mindset with Habits of Mind and Practice to create Learning Agility. He puts the growth back into the Growth Mindset! And, through creating and describing the Mindset Continuum, he provides the cornerstone for effective Growth Mindset interventions. James values the relationships he builds with the schools and teachers he works with, providing the “follow-through” that's so often lacking in teacher professional development. His speaking, workshops and online resources provide not only the deep understanding required to do this work meaningfully, but also the tools and ongoing support needed to sustain it in your school and make a real difference to student learning outcomes. James will show you how to create your school-based Growth Mindset Style Guide to ensure your school consistently “nudges” all students towards an increasingly growth-oriented Mindset. James is a Certified Speaking Professional and regularly speaks at conferences around the world. His previous publications include Succeeding with Habits of Mind, The Agile Learner, The Learning Landscape and The Mindset Continuum, as well as a host of e-books and other teacher resources. His online course, “Transforming Teaching and Learning with Growth Mindsets,” supports thousands of educators in schools around the world. He is an international affiliate of Art Costa and Bena Kallick's Institute for Habits of Mind and the creator of www.habitsofmind.org. This week's podcast guest is Maarten van Beek, HR Director for Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg at ING, who I spoke to about the shift from a learn, work, retire approach to careers, to a model of lifelong learning. To encourage lifelong learning and talent fluidity across the organisation, taking an employee centric approach is vital. In Maarten's opinion. HR should focus more on the employee journey, the employee experience and less on the responsibilities and confines of rigid traditional L&D roles.Throughout the episode Maarten and I discuss:How organisations can promote a lifelong learning approach to work by encouraging and supporting employees to reinvent their skill sets every three to five yearsThe power of using skills data to fuel talent fluidityThe business value and societal value of measuring skills proficiency without depending on traditional qualifications and educational experienceSupport for this podcast is brought to you by Techwolf. Being prepared for what you know is going to happen is hard enough, but how can you get ready for the unexpected? The answer: learning agility.Learning agility is a set of skills, competencies and mindsets that support an organization's ability to respond in unforeseen situations. In fact, higher levels of learning agility could help to “future proof” organizations against challenges of turbulent times, and as such will likely become a differentiator for life science companies. Best of all, learning agility is a skillset that can be developed. In this interview with Hasini Jayatilaka, PhD, Consultant and Data and Analytics Specialist, Scientific and Medical Affairs at Syneos Health, we discuss why learning agility is particularly beneficial in Medical Affairs, six tangible ways of cultivating learning agility and a diagnostic tool that can score, analyze, benchmark and provide recommendations for improvement on an individual, functional and organizational level. In today's episode, I invited Feroza Engineer. Feroza as a performance coach, she is driven by her lifelong mission of helping people create change that is scientific, realistic in achievement and that eventually helps them self - develop in the long run. You will usually hear Feroza say, “Everybody and anybody can coach themselves, they just need discovery and some tough-love”. A common thread that you will also observe from her coaching testimonials is that she's personally invested in the coachee; making change easy and practical to achieve, systematically designing the coaching journey with specified outcomes and is relentless in her pursuit to help coachees be a better version of themselves. Feroza is known in the industry as a learning leader who capitalizes on her 16 years of experience that has spanned across 130+ organizations, agnostic of industry, not only across India but US, China, Singapore, UAE, UK, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Her core areas of expertise lie in CXO Coaching and Development, Building Organizational Learning Architecture, Measuring Impact through Learning Analytics & Neuroscience based Self - Development. Whether in her personal or professional life, trust & relatability are important qualities that she has managed to build successfully. For Feroza, authenticity is key. Hailing from a family of engineers, becoming a 'fixer' comes very naturally to her! And it is this spirit of unapologetically owning who she is that allows her to build meaningful relationships. She is an ICF certified coach. Currently on the finishing lines of PCC. She has coached 46 unique individuals in the last 5 years from CXOs to First time managers, Professors, Start-up founders, Tech wizards, Women Entrepreneurs, IAS officers to Pro-athletes and LGBTQI professionals. She has also designed and deployed coaching frameworks, coaching roadmaps and coaching curriculum during her stints with Dale Carnegie Training, Target and Jombay. This relevant and unique combination of having been on both sides of the table, business-facing and consulting makes her a coach who is rooted in business wisdom and realities of everyday life. Her expertise areas in performance coaching are Personal Growth, Leadership Development, Team Leadership, Growth Mindset, Self Confidence, Emotional Intelligence, Learning Agility, Career Transitions, Emotional Fitness, Lifestyle Habit Formation, Public Speaking & Large group communications. She curates personalised coaching experiences and her coaching “walks” are quite a hit! It could be a walk or a simple workout, a hobby session or a simple luncheon where the coaches feels at home and is able to relate to the coaching process from their worldview. In the virtual world, these experiences get slightly tailored, yet it keeps the coachee at the centre of the entire journey. These curated 6 to 12 sessions of 1.5 hours each is what she prescribes for deep-rooted behavioural change as through every session, there is a clear outcome followed by “homework” in the practical sense for the coachee to discover. An honours graduate in Psychology from St Xavier's, Mumbai and University rank holder, Masters in Counselling Psychology Mumbai, Feroza has immersed her life's work in behavioural sciences, neuroscience and performance coaching. She has also worked and served in a coaching capacity at Performanse, Franklin Covey for Trust Immersions, Bergerac Leadership Communications.

I've had a hard time pulling this episode together. The last few weeks have presented the greatest disruption to formal education of our lifetimes, and quite possibly, modern history. It's hard to know what is needed right now, especially as more information, resources, tools, and strategies flood our feeds than ever before. The strongest urge I’ve felt in the last few weeks is the urge to be still, to observe, and to listen. And as I have, a few several things have risen to the surface as "most important". In this quarantined episode I share an epiphany I had while working on an art piece, a few of the things I believe are most important for educators and parents during this time. Stay safe my friends. Our capacity and openness to new ideas and concepts help to expand our growth within the project management field. In this episode, we explore new thinking for science within project management and also how to benefit from learning agility. Listen to hear Josh Ramirez President of the Institute for Neuro & Behavioral Project Management and Veronica Schmidt Harvey Principal with Schmidt Harvey Consulting.Josh gets us thinking about the science of project management and how the brain functions the help us improve as our ability to successfully deliver projects. For example, how we plan a project vs predicting how a project will play out. Predictions allow us to bring in additional sciences which will allow us to be more accurate.Veronica focuses on leadership and techniques leaders should use to be more successful. Learning agility is not tied specifically to Agile, rather it is about applying learnings at the pace of change. Things have changed a lot in the last week. Many are in the process of transitioning from work and school to home, and working hard to figure out what the next weeks and months will look like. As I thought about the best thing I could share this week, I kept coming back to mindfulness. Our collective anxiety is spiking right now and it does not take long to lose ourselves amid the sea of updates, tweets, and posts. We have to be intentional about being good to ourselves, good to our brains, and creating space for peace. So this week I'm re-sharing one of my favorite conversations, with Lou Redmond, founder of One Mindful Education. The entire conversation is full of amazing tips for both adults and kids to release anxiety and ground themselves, but my favorite part of the conversation is when Lou actually walks us through a meditation himself. If you need a few moments of de-stressing right now, you can skip right to the exercise at 46:30, or listen to the whole thing. Year over year, Gallup student polls have revealed a disturbing, but unsurprising trend: student engagement in school declines steadily with each grade, and sharply from elementary to middle to high school. One of the proven contributors to this decline over time is the inability of many schools to build the strengths of each student and make learning relevant. This is especially true for the nearly 50% of polled students who have entrepreneurial ambitions. So what can schools do? If you ask Don Wettrick, CEO and Co-Founder of the StartEdUp Foundation, the answer can be found in the word purpose. For 20 years, Don has taught students to connect to a larger life purpose through innovation and entrepreneurship. What started in the classroom, has grown into a global network of renowned innovators, educators and entrepreneurs. The StartEdUp network is dedicated to helping teachers and students change education by building innovation and entrepreneurship into the fabric of the classroom. In this episode Don talks about the StartEdUp story, what it looks like in action, and how educators and school leaders can get started.Connect with Don and StartEdUp:Website: https://startedupfoundation.org/ and http://www.startedupinnovation.com/Twitter: @donwettrick and @letsstartedupLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/donwettrick/If you liked what you heard, rate and review Off the Assembly LineConnect with Rebecca on LinkedIn or at rebeccaareed.com.Learn more about the Teacher Mastermind at http://teachermastermind.comFollow Off the Assembly Line:twitter @offassemblylineinstagram @offtheassemblyline_podcastfacebook @offtheassemblylinepodcast.Special thanks to Scott Holmes for our intro music. [RECAST EP01] A little over 6 years ago, Sabari Raja heard a persistent and compelling question from educators, community leaders, and industry professionals in her city. They all wanted to know how to create meaningful and accessible industry connections in the classroom. The question led Sabari and co-founder Binu Thayamkery to create Nepris, which connects professionals of all kinds with K-12 classrooms (LIVE!) - no matter where they're located. Sabari shares insights on the industry-education connection, the importance of broad career exposure for student opportunity, and how she started Nepris. Have you ever read a paper, found a tool, or heard an idea that made you stop and think, "If we could do this, we'd see truly major changes"? That's how I felt after speaking with education journalist and author Natalie Wexler about her recent book, The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America's Broken Education System - and How to Fix It. Despite the heavy emphasis on reading instruction through testing, "accountability" measures, and funding over the last two decades, reading scores have been flat. Students performing at "proficient" levels make up less than one third of the student population. Why is this? The answer appears to lie not in environmental factors or lack of resources, but in our approach to reading instruction. In this episode, Natalie shares why skills-based reading comprehension misses the mark, and new approach that can close the gap. This week I'm excited to share a deeply insightful conversation with Dr. Robyn Koslowitz, clinical psychologist, regular contributor to Psychology Today, and the Education Director of Targeted Parenting Institute. We’re talking about social-emotional learning (SEL), and the small tweaks that can make a major difference in students’ wellness, behavior, and long-term health and success. My favorite insight in our conversation is the innovative and integrated approach that Dr. Koslowitz uses to bridge the gap between home and school - a disconnect that is felt by many, but rarely addressed holistically. Like our recent mindfulness episodes, this conversation has wisdom for everyone.Connect with Dr. Koslowitz and Targeted Parenting Institute:Website: https://targetedparenting.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drrobynkoslowitz/Facebook: @drkoslowitzpsychologyInstagram: @dr.koslowitzpsychologyPsychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/targeted-parentingIf you're interested in partnering with kindness.org as a Learn Kind Pilot classroom, go to kindness.org and scroll down to "Learn Kind" to find out more. How do you thrive as a true creative, in a system built for process? If you're 2086xxoo (or 20 for short), you dive in with both feet and "problem-solve your way through" - and create curricular innovation along the way. This week I'm honored to talk with the most innovative educator I have ever seen in action. 20 is the kind of teacher they make movies about, the kind of educator whose ability to connect with students and call up the best in them seems almost magical. Throughout a career that has spanned every grade level, school type, and demographic environment, 20 has consistently fed the fire of creative work, recently launching the language arts platform for teachers and students, Liberation Education. Think of Liberation Ed like an educational Netflix, with a library of original language arts hip hop songs and videos, created in collaboration with students, with full curriculum currently in the works. On this episode, 20 and I talk about harnessing the magic of "kid energy" to create curriculum that students WANT to connect with, and how to thrive as a true creative in an education system stacked against mold-breakers. Imagine an entire school pausing, turning inward, and dedicating several unbroken minutes to mindfulness guided by a prompt overlaid with classical music. Imagine each student, teacher, and school staff member beginning the day with this experience. You can almost feel the collective exhale and see the clear minds emerging from each musical moment. This is exactly what happens in classrooms and schools that partner with Mindful Music Moments, a program that brings mindfulness practice to K-12 students in partnership with world-class performing arts organizations. In the second episode of our Mindfulness Education miniseries, Mindful Music Moments creator Stacy Sims explains just what makes this program so powerful, and how educators can begin to practice some of the most effective aspects of mindfulness right now. If you ask health experts, schools leaders, and even students about the biggest problem students face today, you'll get the same answer: anxiety. Student anxiety levels have risen steadily over the last seven years, with recent national data suggesting that one-third of students will experience an anxiety disorder. Students themselves recognize the massive problem that anxiety presents. A 2019 Pew Research Center study found that 70% of teens surveyed felt anxiety and depression was the number one issue they faced, with another 26% indicating it was a minor problem. The underlying causes of the rising trend are complex, and many fall outside the influence of schools. But there are significant and relatively simple strides that schools can take to reduce the anxiety students experience in school. One of the most effective is the intentional integration of mindfulness. In this week's episode, Lou Redmond, founder of One Mindful Education explains that mindfulness is about so much more than "just calming down", and shares a powerful framework that educators can use in classrooms, school-wide, and even personal practice. And because mindfulness can't really be understood outside of experience, Lou walks us through some simple exercises to get us started. “What transforms the individual, transforms the collective”. Several weeks ago a colleague shared this quote with me, and ever since I heard it, I've been wondering, "Is this really true?" Are the same things that transform you and me the keys to transforming whole systems? If we looked at our own stories, could we find practices that might help us bring significant shifts to the education system? I think we can. As we close out the 2019 year and the 2010 decade, we'll take a closer look at the things that transform us, and how personal disruption and innovation can provide insight for collective change. On this episode I share how my own life completely transformed over the last calendar year, the 6 practices that led to personal innovation and accelerated growth, and what these practices can tell us about the education system as a whole. You can find more show details and resources at offtheassemblyline.co. As an educator, you pour your full energy into your craft. In addition to the daily practices of pedagogy, social-emotional learning, and classroom management, there's a dedication to professional development and ongoing learning. From conferences to workshops, and research to trainings, you're consistently seeking answers to the big questions. Questions like, "What do my students need now, that will enable them to thrive when they're out in the world?" As an educator, you play the ultimate long game and often don't get to see the long-term results of your work. But what if we could flip our perspective, and go straight to the source? What would thriving graduates tell us went right? What would they identify as the greatest impact on post K-12 success? In episode 11 I'm joined by Andre Haykal Jr., an entrepreneur, podcast host, and author - who just happens to be 19 years old. Andre pulls back a curtain we rarely see behind and shares the classroom experiences that fast-tracked his entrepreneurial journey, the urgency of building creativity and failure into the learning process, and how educators can help students build the muscle of self-education.Connect with Andre:LinkedIn: Andre Haykal Jr. Instagram: @andrehaykaljrGet the Book: What They Won't Teach YouPodcast: Real Talk UniversityWebsite: https://www.innovateyouniversity.com/If you liked what you heard, rate and review Off the Assembly LineYou can find more show details and resources at offtheassemblyline.co and connect with Rebecca on LinkedIn or at rebeccaareed.com.Learn more about the Teacher Mastermind at http://teachermastermind.comFollow Off the Assembly Linetwitter @offassemblylineinstagram @offtheassemblyline_podcastfacebook @offtheassemblylinepodcast.Special thanks to Scott Holmes for our intro music. Is there any academic subject as universally polarizing or intimidating as math? Probably not. For students, educators, and parents alike, the subject can induce anxiety like no other - and we have the unfortunate data to prove it. But it doesn't have to be this way, and in this episode Dr. Georgie Hart, reveals an evidence-based path forward. Georgie is the Education Director and Co-Founder of Sparx, a UK based education company that's spent the last 8 years reimagining the way math is learned and taught in schools, and supports more than a million students and teachers in the UK. Georgie and I talk about what Sparx is doing differently, the very real phenomenon of math anxiety, and how educators and parents can help students develop confidence to thrive in math. It's no secret that today's workforce is experiencing a gap in the talent pipeline and in-demand skill development. A 2019 survey of 600 HR leaders showed that 64% perceive a skills gap in their company, a surprising increase from 52% in last year's survey. As companies scramble to address recruitment strategies and the upskilling and reskilling of employees, a growing body of educators and entrepreneurs are turning their attention to K12 students, well before they enter college or the workforce. One of these change-makers is Anne Jones, who, along with her husband Dan Gonzalez, founded District C, a non-profit that aims to build a "new kind of talent pipeline" by giving students the greatest lever to long-term success: the ability to leverage the talents of diverse teams to solve complex problems. District C works with local businesses to provide student teams with real challenges that they’re currently facing, and then empowers student teams to deliver an actionable solution to the business (which 94% of businesses actually use!). Innovation. One of the most important, yet overused buzzwords of the last decade. It might just hold the keys to school transformation and deeper student learning, but what do we really mean when we say the word? And how can schools build it into their culture in a way that's sustainable? In this episode I talk with Eric Schneider, President and Co-Founder of InnovateK12 about accessing the transformative power of innovation in districts, schools, and classrooms. Innovate K12 starts with the premise that the greatest sources of innovation are the stakeholders closest to students: teachers, administrative staff, custodians, bus drivers, principals - and students themselves. When Mike Yates jumped into the world of education as a teacher, he immediately started searching for the school model that would serve students most effectively, and empower them to drive their own learning. His search led him to Alpha, an innovative and non-traditional school that promises students and families three things: 1. Kids will love school, 2. Kids will learn twice as fast, and 3. Kids will learn life-skills. Mike and I talk about the power of authentic learning, pathways for educators who do education differently, with some light riffing on the future of education. Guest - Mike Sarraille, CEO EF Overwatch Mike is a retired Navy Seal, founder of Vetted, and CEO of EF Overwatch. EF Overwatch connects veterans with companies who are looking to address talent gaps. They are currently focused on placing retired Special Ops & Combat Aviators. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We discuss leadership, common mistakes leaders make, how to overcome these mistakes, and why you should consider hiring veterans in your workspace. We also discuss the direct correlation between military experience and the private sector. Questions Addressed How does military experience apply to the non-military workspace? What are some common mistakes leaders make? As a leader, how do I check myself to make sure I'm not making these mistakes? What is meant by leading up & down in an organization? Leadership development and learning over time Can you describe the onboarding process when adding new leaders to a team? How can we help veterans make the transition to the private sector? Can you discuss what it means to detach? Key Takeaways It’s all about leadership There are three primary categories of mistakes leaders make. #1 - They don’t believe in the mission/organization #2 - Ego #3 - Extreme Ownership Extreme Ownership Starts with Humility A common question Mike hears is - How do you overcome a bad boss? #1 - Keep your ego in check #2 - Lead up and down #3 - Work together Steadfast humility - keep your ego in check One of the worst misconceptions about leadership in the military is that we all fall in line. There is a time for just get it done, but that is not the norm. "It is not what you preach, it’s what you tolerate" The military does not have a zero-defect mentality. People will make mistakes. Learn from these mistakes an move forward After action processes Great mentor and coaches AAR (After Action Review) this is similar to a post-mortem It is about Learning It is important to make Failures known. Identify the Solution AARs are used in both successful missions & failed missions Answer the question - "How do we get better?" Decentralized Command Everyone Leads It is important that the team knows the "Why". The leader explains the why - desired end state Communicates what the standard is. Think of this in the context of "The Box" Initial the boundaries of the box are tight. Over time, the boundaries expand. The Box gets larger. Why EF Overwatch? Military experience brings - Learning Agility + Mindset There is no quit in these guys. Focused on sourcing talented & humble leaders in organizations. Detachment is important, because... When you try to solve everything at once you solve nothing. You have to have the ability to relax, back away Calm is contagious Mindset can overcome a lack of industry experience Show Links EF Overwatch Jocko Podcast with Mike Sarraille Echelon Front EP 80 OODA Loop with Dave Berke Catalyst Sale - Live Chat Catalyst Sale - Podcast List Extreme Ownership Thank You Thank you for rating and reviewing the podcast via iTunes, Google Play, or your favorite podcast platform.
Alexander
