Emily O’Brien is the founder of Comeback Snacks popcorn company. It all started when she went to prison. Before, Emily was an entrepreneur and social media professional, having created her own firm at a young age and enjoyed great success. Regrettably, addiction caused her to make some poor choices that culminated in a four-year jail term. As her sentence began, Emily made it her mission to transform herself, get clean, and make a positive difference during her term. “I didn’t know how I’d make a difference at the time,” says Emily, “but I knew I would find something I cared about that would benefit from a purpose-driven facelift.” Thus, Comeback Snacks (formerly known as Cons and Kernels)was born. Upon her release, Emily made a decision to start a popcorn company that used high quality, health-conscious ingredients to create unique flavours inspired by the ones she found in prison. A fun, self-deprecating brand that would also help remove the stigma around people who had prior convictions and provide newly-released offenders with the  chance at a fresh start through training, empowerment, and education. Punk Rock HR Episode 112: So, what does a Canadian millennial entrepreneur know about making a comeback? This week's guest, Emily O'Brien, founder of Comeback Snacks, is going to tell us. In today's episode, Emily opens up about her journey from a sales professional at a global corporation to an entrepreneur, to a convicted felon, and then back again to an entrepreneur. She is someone who is trying to give back, make amends, and help her community.    Many motivational professionals like to say the setback is a setup for the comeback. And often, it sounds over-sensationalized. But in the case of Emily's story, I think that's true. If you'd like to hear about a person who overcame their worst instincts and how they turned it around, I think you're going to love this conversation with Emily O'Brien.   In this episode you'll hear: Emily's story of graduating college with honors, starting her own business, and how things took a left turn when she got arrested. She shares openly about life after her arrest, being sentenced, and going to jail.  How prison forces you to be mindful in a weird, unfortunate way.  She started her popcorn business, Comeback Snacks, in prison. How Emily deals with the pressures of entrepreneurship.  Emily's perspective on how to grow as a leader and challenge yourself to do better. What Emily would like Executives and HR professionals to learn from her story.    Resources from this episode: Comeback Snacks Emily on LinkedIn Laurie on Instagram Laurie on LinkedIn Read more from Laurie Work with Laurie   *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. “I launched a Company While Serving Time for Coke Smuggling” – Emily O’Brien I’m so inspired by our conversation with Emily O’Brien.  Emily is a keynote speaker, entrepreneur, consultant and convict.  Emily is an entrepreneur, who started her current business from prison.  She overcame far more than most entrepreneurs have to deal with, to start her business.  She is the founder of Comeback Snacks where the website proudly proclaims, “We broke the law, but we fix good snacks!” In this episode, Emily talks about why she went to prison, how her perspective on life changed during that time and how she started her business from prison. We talked about where she is with the business today, how it is scaling and what is next for her.  Her story is incredibly inspiring. Check it out! You can connect with Emily here: Emily’s personal website, Emily on Instagram, Comeback Snacks on Instagram, Emily on LinkedIn, Comeback Snacks Website,   HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: Emily experienced a very “normal” upbringing. Nothing spectacular to note, and in fact, she was a rather “good kid.”  She made great grades, did not get in trouble, and did all the right things.  Sure, she liked to have a good time, and party a bit, but nothing too outside of the lines.  In her early 20s she found herself starting to use drugs not just to “celebrate” a good time but to medicate the tough parts of life.  As her drug use increased, she found herself hanging out with, dating, spending time with people who were doing the same things. This led her to a situation where people she was with brought drugs back across the border.  They got caught, and she was sentenced to a 4-year prison sentence. While she was in prison, she wanted to create something good and make use of her time in a positive way. So, she started a popcorn business.  In the podcast we talked about how she came up with the idea, how she started the business and how she created momentum for the business ahead of her release. Emily shares about how she focused on what she did have access to, rather than what she did not have. Sure, in prison, her resources were extremely limited, but she had the ability to write letters, so she did.  She sent letters to journalists who had written about prison reform or crime in the area.  She also sent letters to authors, and podcast hosts who cared about entrepreneurship or prison reform.   These letters led to a lot of opportunity that we discussed in our conversation. She explains that entrepreneurship is all about risk and in prison you do not find a lot of people who are afraid of risk. Some entrepreneurs are on the wrong side of the law, taking the wrong risks, and end up in prison. That does not mean they were bad at being entrepreneurs, in fact, there are a lot of really successful entrepreneurs in prison who, if they applied their skills differently, could build phenomenally successful businesses.  We ended up agreeing that prison could be a funnel into the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Emily has been out of prison for just over a year now and is starting to scale her business. We talked about how she is making that happen and the challenges ahead for her as she navigates scaling the business.  Emily also talked about prison reform as well as second chance hiring and how she tries to primarily hire people who have spent time in prison. A return guest, Emily O'Brien has pivoted her Canadian business since the last show to be called ComebackSnacks.com. Her women-owned business hires ex-felons, is a social enterprise and she's working to get other businesses to change their social policies. In this particular pandemic, Emily's business is lucky in the fact they produce food so they have remained open. However, adjustments are being made, including free deliveries. Their stores are located with other grocery stores which has kept their doors open. All employees have been kept on payroll so far,. She credits her time in prison as teaching her to adapt with new and extreme situations. And house arrest made it a lot easier to deal with the current isolation and keeping busy. When she entered the prison system, Emily was privileged in the fact that she had family and resources. Once she realized how few people had any resources in the prison system and were essentially doomed, it spurred her to work for social justice. Oh, and let's not forget to mention she started her popcorn business in prison, found some amazing recipes, and started the business on the outside, growing to the enterprise it is now. Just because the mic’s are hot doesn’t mean it will make it on the air. Our show starts cold when the host Saul Colt and the guest get into a nice groove. Emily is a former inmate at a federal prison. She was dragged into an illegal drug trade. Before that experience Emily was a very successful marketer downtown Toronto and used drugs recreationally as a form of celebration and to help in being the life of the party… like many people do today. Drug use became a coping mechanism for a family issue. She was then dragged into a one time, harmless, no chance of being caught smuggling trip to St. Lucia in the Caribbean. On the way back home while wearing a tailored drug smuggling dress she was caught by security. It was a downhill spiral after being told she was going to prison. Then one day in the midst of this storm Emily turned her life around. She read 82 books in prison. She decided to live a sober life. She decided to start a business with an impact beyond just incredible popcorn, Cons and Kernels. Cons and Kernels Website Emily on Instagram Send me an email! ben@heroicminds.live

Talk about your bad love interests. Emily O'Brien went on a bad outing with guy she liked, supposedly a vacation where HE was going to bring back some drugs across the border, but not HER. Oh yeah. you can guess the ending of this story, but suffice it to say Emily had some time in prison to rethink her life. She had a great family for support and decided to honor them by turning things around. Her Canadian prison had an entrepreneurship course which she took and at a SuperBowl party, she noticed there was popcorn available, but no company was making flavored popcorn with a social impact. Cons N Kernels was born. She started the company in prison for people who were on parole and needing a job. We’ve discussed the Edinburgh Shoreline Project before on the podcast. This weekend, volunteers from the Seafield Shoreline Group will be out planting saplings in the embankment from the Dog and Cat Home along towards King’s Road. The idea is to increase the diversity of plants in that part of the Prom which should, in turn, increase the diversity of wildlife in the area. At present, the Seafield section is the least popular part of Portobello Beach; and the aim of the Shoreline Group is to make that area more attractive. The coordinator of the Group is Emily O’Brien who explained what would take place this weekend of David Calder.https://edinburghshoreline.org.uk/

Why is there a double standard for discussing reports that a soap may be cancelled? We all know the genre is struggling, but can’t such reports help motivate soap fans to try and save their soap? Taylor tries to cause problems for Brooke and Ridge on The Bold and the Beautiful. Does Taylor need a home in Napa Valley, because she’s been doing a lot of whining lately? Katie isn’t happy with Bill. Steffy had better watch out. Will Days of Our Lives do a gay storyline? If they do, should DAYS pursue a Chad and Will pairing or should they explore another couple? Would there have been more long term storyline potential if it had been Carly instead of Luke who was responsible? Jillian and Melodie debate whether Robin or Lisa would take each other out in a fight. Find out whose Luke and Regan come down on. Tyler Christopher is leaving General Hospital as Nikolas Cassadine. Elizabeth Taylor, the original Helena Cassadine, passes away. One Life to Live is telling a ripped from the headlines bullying story.
