Episode 365: On a humid August morning in 1873, the quiet, tight-knit community of Baker's Settlement outside of Bridgewater in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, was shattered by a crime so shocking that it would echo for generations. This is the story of Mary Ann Frauzel Mailman—a woman described by her contemporaries as strikingly beautiful, and by all accounts, a devoted mother—whose life ended violently at the hands of her husband, Peter Mailman. The murder and its aftermath would become one of the most infamous cases in the province's history, both for its brutality and for the chilling window it offered into the darkness that can lurk behind closed doors. Episode 357: On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, 21 June 1950, the tranquil tobacco farming community of Langton, of Langton, Ontario, was shattered by a violent crime that would leave an indelible mark on Canadian history. Joseph Herbert McAuliffe, a World War II veteran turned counterfeiter, walked into the Imperial Bank of Canada with robbery on his mind. In less than half an hour, two innocent men lay dead at the robber's hands, Arthur Lierman and William Goddyn, their bodies riddled with bullets, and a community was gripped by fear. For three harrowing days, Norfolk County held its breath as McAuliffe, armed and desperate, evaded capture in the surrounding woods. The manhunt that ensued would reveal a tale of tragic childhood, wartime heroism, and a descent into criminality that culminated in a botched robbery and senseless killings. As the story unfolded, it exposed the raw nerves of a nation grappling with questions of justice, redemption, and the ultimate price of crime. Dr. Thomas Neill Cream, a physician with a respectable facade, became one of the most notorious figures in Victorian London's dark history. Under the guise of providing medical care, he secretly dispensed deadly doses of strychnine, preying on vulnerable women, using his sinister charm and cunning to both administer poison and run from the effects. For years Cream operated in the shadows, his victims spanning across countries, borders and seas, until his insatiable thirst for power and cruelty ultimately revealed the monster behind the doctor's mask. On the evening of February 14, 1985, Valentine's Day, at around 6:00 p.m., Bryan Hart of Colborne, Ontario, came home to a quiet house after work. He looked around the house for his wife, Betty, but could not find her. The couple's 19-year-old son had already been home for an hour and a half. Michael said he hadn't seen his mom but had noticed a pair of glasses she wore sitting on the landing leading into the basement. Thinking his mother was out somewhere, Michael picked up the glasses and put them on top of the refrigerator in the kitchen for safekeeping. On learning about the glasses from Michael, Bryan felt compelled to check the basement. It was the only place he hadn't checked yet. In the cellar, Bryan discovered Betty lying on her side in a vast pool of blood. She was unresponsive. Bryan raced back upstairs and told his son to call an ambulance. Marguerite Elizabeth (Betty) Hart, 46, was dead. Among Betty's many injuries, her throat had been slashed. Early on, the OPP presumed Betty's wounds to be self-inflicted, but not all was as it appeared. Sources: 1987 CanLII 124 (ON CA) | R. v. Moran | CanLII SCC Docket | Donald Philip John Moran v. The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson: The federal government is seeking Canadians' help in shaping its coming plan for how many newcomers should be welcomed to the country. Chrystia Freeland penned a piece for Postmedia, making her case for the capital gains tax. ‘Golden Era: The Legacy of Bob Morrow' is the new documentary about the late, former mayor of Hamilton, by local filmmaker Scott C. Newman of White Dwarf Pictures. It is set to be premiered at the Westdale Theatre on June 16. The first interest rate cut from the Bank of Canada in more than four years will not be enough to help most prospective homebuyers feeling sidelined by high borrowing costs, new polling suggests. We look at the Federal Liberal's capital gains tax, and the news that the Conservative Party of Canada will not vote for it. The Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) is ramping up efforts to increase the number of medical conditions pharmacists can treat, in what it says is an effort to help ease the pressures of an overburdened healthcare system. It is all coming up on the Hamilton Today Podcast! In today's episode, I talk with my co-author, Mike Ulmer. We are talking about 'How We Wrote 'Drop The Mic Marketing .' Mike's bio speaks volumes: Aside from co-authoring Jason's debut book 'Drop The Mic Marketing,' Mike Ulmer has had an illustrious 25-year career in journalism, having worked for the Woodstock Sentinel-Review, The Hamilton Spectator, The Hockey News, Southam News, National Post, and The Toronto Sun, where he served as a sports columnist for seven years. He has also authored 12 books, and his opinion pieces have been featured in the four major Toronto-based dailies: The Sun, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, and The Toronto Star. I asked Mike about the process of information gathering, which included him asking me "business-unrelated" personal questions. He clearly explains the necessity to establish a comfortable environment where they can trust that the author is a good listener. It gives the reader clarity of who you are, what and why you did the things you did. Next, I pose to Mike the question of what comes after the research process. He says that he and his team referred to the recorded audio manuscript to keep up with the authenticity of my story. Mike says it was the first time he worked with a "Japanese figure in gangster rapper" who loved doing music but loved marketing the music. He says he was drawn to my evolution from singing behind the mic to talking behind the mic to doing digital marketing, which he rightly observes is where my heart is. Moving on, we talk about the relevance of baseball player Joe Dimaggio in the book. Mike illustrates how Dimaggio became a successful brand ambassador, having evolved from a baseball player. It perfectly relates to my story as a former "failed rockstar" to a well-performing digital marketer. Next, I seek from Mike some of the hacks in research for the book's direction. Mike admits he has no secret tricks but relies on his brain, which naturally harbors information. He has a head with a library of ideas. Working on the initial script with the client - At this stage, Mike says he gathers just small details from the client. I was glad he threw in some cool superlatives to describe me: "a great client and fun guy ."A takeaway quote from him is, "Once you know who the principal star is, your book is done, for the rest is just details." Examples of other "failed Japanese rockstars" - Mike tells us a story of his former client, Mark, in his book "The 50-year-old Millenial." Mark did not have a proposition, which is the foundation of every story in a book. In the book, he carves a more radical proposition for a fresh culture of servant leadership, challenging the conventional leadership style in business. My guest advises that you should not stop learning when writing a book because you get to review everything. The exciting story of Ron Foxcroft - An official baseball referee, Ron spent US$300,000 on three Fox 40 whistles he invented that anyone did not want. The math wasn't good at all. During one big match officials convention, he walked out to the compound in the middle of the night and blew his whistle loudly. The attending referees worldwide were startled by the sound of the whistle and wanted it immediately, marking the beginning of Ron's empire. Guest: Susan Clairmont, Hamilton Spectator justice columnist How long should offenders with more than one murder conviction stay in prison before they are eligible for parole? According to the Supreme Court, the answer is 25 years. Earlier this year, the court found the practice of consecutive life sentences (serving more than 25 years before parole eligibility) to be cruel and unjust. While this is a decision that only affects a few high-profile criminals, it reminds us of some of the worst crimes in Canadian history and will have a direct impact on the families of homicide victims. There's an old expression: "You can never get enough of what you don't need." Or, "With more property comes more anxiety." In our minds and our hearts, we know this to be true. But, we haven't seemed to be able to do anything about it. Paul Berton, editor-in-chief of the Hamilton Spectator, has weighed in on this in his new book: "Shopomania: Our Obsession with Possession."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
