Canada Post's decision to halt its ‘neighbourhood mailing' service is rippling through communities across the country. For small businesses and arts organizations, it was one of the most cost-effective ways to reach their audiences. The Firehall Arts Centre here in Vancouver has relied on this targeted mailing every year to connect with patrons in nearby neighbourhoods. Now, faced with the sudden loss of that tool, the Firehall is left with a $13,000 bill for printing brochures it can't use — and no affordable alternative to get the word out about its shows GUEST: Donna Spencer  TITLE: Firehall Arts Centre's Artistic Producer Learn more about your ad choices. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - There were a couple of changes in the plan for the Rainbow Ridge Affordable Housing Development as the site was cleared. A small parcel of land along the northern border of the property was given to the Cortes Island Fire Department, to enable it to expand. Plans for a hedge of trees between Rainbow Ridge and the Cortes Island Senior's Village were drastically altered after root rot was discovered.   Mark Lombard spoke on behalf of the Cortes Island Housing Society, “ In the first phase, we have cut down the trees in the area where the housing society will be building 24 units of affordable housing over the next few years, as well as a community building that'll house a laundromat and washrooms and an office for the housing society.” “We've cleared about four acres of land right behind the Manson's Fire Hall. We've also cleared about 50 feet of forest that is now going to be part of the training yard for the fire department. There's more space for the helicopters to land and more room for training. The ambulance is also bringing in a housing unit for the paramedics into the training yard.” Unfortunately they also cut down a great many more trees than the Cortes Island Seniors Village wanted.  Mark Lombard: “We didn't communicate as clearly as we could have. We met with some of the seniors this week, and we had a really constructive, positive conversation. I feel like their concerns were addressed and we were able to answer their questions, but it's a really hard thing and we really empathize and understand the fact that it's never easy to see the trees cut down in the neighborhood where you live” One of the seniors, who did not wish to be identified, expressed support for Rainbow Ridge as a project and agreed that Cortes Island needs more housing, but she had loved that forest. Cortes Currents spoke to three seniors and they were all devastated, but Naomi Hayter was the only one who agreed to an interview. “I've only just moved here. My concern is for the village here and the impact it's had on the people who have lived here much longer than I have. This has been a shock to everyone.”  “This village was created by the elders who came before us, and I find that to be a very special living situation for people of the age group from seventies up into nineties. It's been a safe place for people and I think it's a model for other communities to come and look at. People have come and looked at it as future possibilities for other places, but it has been compromised, I think.”  Up until now the Senior's Village had been sheltered in the trees, now it sits on the edge of a four acre clearcut.  This does not appear to be what the Cortes Housing Society intended.   Two months ago, at a public meeting in Mansons Hall on January 29, Sadhu Johnston, Executive Director of the Housing Society,  said, “We heard loud and clear from them that they support the project, but they don't want to lose all the trees. There are some nicer cedars. So we're moving the project south. There's a natural land clearing down here that we'll be taking advantage of this way.” Cortes Currents: The first aerial photos of the logging operation showed a fringe of trees separating the Senior's Village from Rainbow Ridge. Most of these have since been removed. Mark Lombard: “ In the northwest corner, which is directly adjacent to the senior's cottages, we cleared the area where the training yard for the fire department's going to expand.  Then we cleared out a little patch of trees that were unhealthy that had a lot of root rot in them, and some of them had already started to fall over. We were particularly worried about having them blow onto the seniors' homes.”

A first for the podcast this week! We have not one, but two special guests who make an appearance on For the Record. Our first guest is Erica Wong who is once again organizing the special Queensborough Firehall Lighting Ceremony. Erica talks about her involvement with this special community event which is taking place on Saturday, November 30th. She also invites everyone to the Queensborough Christmas Market taking place on November 23rd.Next up is life-long New West resident Dave Prevost. While he's never been political in the past, the Columbia Square project (construction of up to 8 towers at up to 53 stories high) has got him motivated. In fact, he started an online petition which is garnering lots of community support calling for Council to have a rethink. Prevost talks about his concerns regarding building so much density without the appropriate community amenities.During the weekly Council Roundup, the discussion leads to a number of reports and motions brought forward to the November 18th Council meeting.A staff report on the new Crisis Response Team has co-hosts Paul and Daniel focusing on the $1M annual cost that should be paid for by senior orders of government. Once again the City of New West is stepping up while Victoria and Ottawa sit on the sidelines regarding an issue that falls within their jurisdiction.Next up was a briefing about covering up ditches and building sidewalks in select areas of Queensborough. A Community First councillor moved a motion to spend $1M on a 'quick treatment' plan for a number of streets in Queensborough that will result in a significant loss of street parking. It will also result in many of the streets becoming one-way, vs. two-way streets. Why did Council approve this first then ask staff to consult with local residents afterwards? The 'temporary' homeless shelter at the former Army and Navy building on Columbia has received a 5-2 approval for another 3 years. Yes, that means the 'temporary' homeless shelter that was only supposed to be open for only18 months will be in operation for six years. Yet the unhoused on New West streets wait desperately for the Province of BC to construct the long-awaited supportive housing units on the corner of 6th and Agnes. The doors for those units won't open until at least January 2026!Civic democracy is alive and well in New Westminster. That's in part due to a 6-1 vote to retain the status quo at Council and not place any annual limits on how many motions councillors can introduce each year. Let's hope this is the last in a string of initiatives and discussions over the past 24 months aimed at restricting the democratic right of elected officials. After the next election when the NWP form a majority, democratic reforms will be initiated to open up city hall once again. It's a packed podcast that you'll want to listen through to the end. If you enjoyed it be sure to tell your friends and family to follow us on Spotify, Apple Podcast and all other major platforms.

Nova Scotia, April 18-19, 2020 Over a period of thirteen hours, a 51 year old denturist, dressed as a police officer and driving a replica police car, carried out Canada's most deadly act of mass murder. One of the lesser reported gunfire exchanges that happened during the Nova Scotia shooting spree didn't involve the killer, Gabriel Wortman. For reasons still unknown, two RCMP officers stopped their vehicle, stepped onto the roadside, and opened fire on the building being used as a shelter for displaced Portapique residents... the Onslow Belmont Firehall. If you are unfamiliar with this story, it's nuts, but what's perhaps MORE nuts, is that the RCMPs investigation into their officers actions seem to conflict with the civilian eye witness statement. In this episode of nighttime Paul Palango and I will attempt to answer the question "why did the RCMP shoot up the Onslow Belmont Firehall?”. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -A small portion of the property is going to be used for affordable housing. Some Cortes residents have asked what will happen to the rest of Rainbow Ridge? “If there are a few people, there are several people who haven't come forward to say anything,” said Elizabeth Anderson, President of the Cortes Community Housing Society. So she sent the following letter out to the community: Dear Friends & Neighbours, Residents of Cortes Island, As you may know, Rainbow Ridge is a 51 acre property, located in Mansons Landing. Recently 6 acres of the property has been rezoned allowing us to create 20 Non-Profit affordable rental homes on the northernmost portion (directly south of the Firehall). We have received some questions about the status of the remaining 45 acres and we would like to publicly restate that our Board of Directors and staff are committed to the following: Maintain a permanent public trail connection from Beasley Road to Cemetery Road. Maintain a wildlife corridor along the west side of the property. Maintain a green buffer along the east side of the property. Include two east-west forested zones and wildlife corridors. Protect the wetland/bog at the south-east corner of the property. Join all other community efforts to continue protecting Hague Lake. In the very unlikely event of the sale or lease of any portion of the remaining 45 acres, then we are committed to placing a covenant on that specific parcel to ensure that all our above mentioned protections are honoured by the new owner/leasee. Our year-end appeal raised all the funds required to retire 100% of the outstanding land loans in 2021, thanks to the immense generousity of local donors, who helped us to take the brave step of purchasing and owning outright these large and important legacy lands. Through community visioning and collaborations with other Non-Profit groups, we will in time be able to determine specific trail routing, wetland restorations, as well as specific habitat conservation areas, all of which will be sensitively integrated with future housing clusters. ‘It takes a community to raise a village' and together we can continue to both protect these lands and see our vision of affordable housing on Cortes become a reality. Thank you all for your interest and your caring. Sincerely, Elizabeth Anderson, President, on behalf of Cortes Community Housing Society (CHS)

NANAIMO—COVID-19 figures released today show a steady decline in the number of new cases and hospitalizations in BC. There are just seven new cases of the virus reported over the past 24 hours, and none in the Island Health region. Fewer than 400 people are now suffering from COVID-19 in BC, with just 8 active cases in Island Health. However, the death rate continues to climb, with one new death at a long term care facility in the Fraser Health region. 63 people are in hospital with the virus, with one in Island Health. The BC Centres for Disease Control has launched an online survey to measure how COVID-19 has affected British Columbians and to inform those leading the pandemic response in their decision-making. BC's Minister of Health, Adrian Dix says it's an opportunity for British Columbians to have a say in improving our health care system. The survey, called "Your Story-Our Future" takes 15 minutes to complete and you can do so online at BCCDC.cacovid19survey. The online survey is offered in three languages. The survey can also be completed by telephone for those unable to access the internet and where the survey is offered in 150 other languages. The phone number is 1-833-707-1900. The survey is open until May the 31st, and the results will be made available this summer. The Provincial Health Officer has some advice to people wondering whether they can start dating during the pandemic. Dr. Bonnie Henry acknowledges it is an extra-difficult time for single people who do not have ready-made people in their bubble" but she is urging singles to proceed slowly and with serious thought before embarking on new relationships right now. Bottom line she says "this is not the time for rapid, serial-dating. But if you pick one person, be responsible, no kissing if you or the other person is feeling unwell. Keep your germs to yourself for now."The Mayor of Nanaimo is standing behind his council's decision to borrow $44 million dollars to pay for $89 million dollars worth of capital projects in this year's budget. Leonard Krog says "it is precisely during this time of crisis that makes it exactly the right time to invest in infrastructure projects." The projects include the replacement of Firehall #1, and major upgrades to Metral Drive, Bowen Road and the Harewood area. Krog says the infrastructure projects will mean continued employment for city workers and new jobs for companies that win city contracts. However, he could not say how many jobs would be created. City taxpayers will see an average $114 dollars increase to their tax bill this year.Written and reported by Lisa Cordasco. Senior Reporter and News Director for CHLY 101.7FM.Have a tip? In this episode, Jonathan and Damien pack up their mic's and take the Spilling the Truth on the road to meet with their friend Dermott Hutton, owner of Firehall Brewery in Oliver, British Columbia.  Firehall Brewery is considered "The Beer of Wine Country" as they are the only brewery located in the heart of Canada's wine growing region.  They make a variety of artisan beers including "The Hoser" and the trio have a chance to enjoy that along with few of the brewery's limited released while recording.  There are a few funny interruptions, being that this was not recorded in the studio, as the guys discuss everything from how Firehall got its start and their barrel aging programs to Canadian's love of Celene Dion.  This is a great look into the Canadian craft beer industry and it was a lot of fun to record.  Firehall Brewery6077 Main StreetOliver, British Columbia https://www.firehallbrewery.com

On this episode we talk to our friend Evan. He enjoys 90s dance music, riding in sad cars, U2 and most importantly a little band called Jimmy Eat World. He shares his stories of traveling near and far (mostly far) to see said band. For most of us, traveling to see bands is a adventure all on its own. For Evan, that adventure is slightly more complicated due to him having Cerebral Palsy. CP may have made being in the pit slightly challenging, but that never stopped him from enjoying what he loves most: listening to live music and ROCKIN OUT. To quote Evan, "the greatest gift you can give someone with disablity is that feeling of, 'I can do whatever the fuck I wanna do.'" Listen and find out what the quote truly means.
