The community of Portapique has officially opened a new special trail located right next to their community centre. The trail was created in partnership with multimedia artist Holly Carr. It's an extension of her book, "The Comfort Tree", which is a story about a variety of forest animals and birds finding comfort around a tree through all four seasons. As you walk along the trail, you find panels depicting scenes from the book. Host Jeff Douglas went to the community of Portapique to see it, and check in with some community members. The first voice you'll hear is Holly Carr, taking him on a tour of the trail itself.

In the weeks following the 2020 killings of 22 people in Portapique, Nova Scotia — the deadliest shooting rampage in Canadian history — the federal government began introducing steps to limit the types of guns people can own and use. There were orders in council, which began with a list of more than 1,500 firearms, before more were added, and later a piece of proposed gun control legislation, Bill C-21. That bill had two readings in the House of Commons, before a major 478-page amendment was added. The changes have drawn more criticism to what was already a contentious bill, as some question whether it's too broad and will affect too many types of guns. On today's episode, we're joined by Kieran Oudshoorn, a producer with CBC's audio documentary unit, to walk through Liberal government's plans for gun control.

In this week's episode, we're talking to Lauren Villagran, who generally covers border issues for the El Paso Times. But she recently crossed a different border — the U.S./Canadian border — to take on an issue that is near and dear to the hearts of El Pasoans and fronterizos. Lauren traveled to Portapique, Nova Scotia, where, one night in April 2020, “in the time it took for the Bay of Fundy's high tide to drain into the Atlantic and swell back up again to the wooded coast,” as Lauren wrote, “a deranged man gunned down 22 people in their homes and on the street, in Portapique and the idyllic communities that line the west shore.” As Lauren notes, there were echoes of El Paso's Aug. 3, 2019, mass shooting tragedy nine months earlier: the same number of initial victims, a shooter with easy access in the U.S. to "assault-style" firearms, a hashtag ending in "strong." But Canada's response was much different from those in Texas and across the United States. Lauren was kind enough to join us this week to discuss her trip, and her reporting.

Warning: This podcast contains graphic content Guest: Farrah Khan, manager of Consent Comes First at Toronto Metropolitan University The inquiry into Canada's worst mass shooting has put a spotlight on how survivors of intimate partner violence often face anger and backlash. After Lisa Banfield was brutally assaulted and held captive by her common-law husband one night in April 2020, 22 people were killed as he went on a murderous shooting rampage. Countless people were impacted by devastating trauma, pain and anger as a result of the gunman's actions, and Banfield was put under a harsh spotlight. Gender rights advocates say Banfield was unfairly criminalized, criticized and accused of abetting the shooter, and her own trauma as a victim of abuse was never acknowledged. There are now concerns the reception to Banfield will deter other women from reporting abuse. This episode was produced by Saba Eitizaz, Brian Bradley and Matthew Hearn

Please use discretion when listening to this episode*On April 18 and 19, 2020, madman Gabriel Wortman unleashed terror across the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. What began as a domestic violence incident between Wortman and his partner turned into a series of shootings, arson and murder that spanned the course of 13 hours in various communities across the province. In part 1 of our season finale, we're joined by our friend Jennifer Knowles to discuss the timeline of the murders, hear shocking 911 tapes and learn how the RCMP failed to keep people safe among the chaos that would officially become the worst mass shooting in Canadian history. The Liberal government faced tough questions this session on everything from accusations they pressured RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki on the Portapique investigation, to their decision to invoke the Emergencies Act in the winter, to inflation. Today, CBC Parliamentary Bureau senior writer Aaron Wherry explains why those questions won't just disappear over the summer, and why the Liberals are “arguably in as difficult a stage as it has maybe ever been, which is a funny thing to say for a government that's been through some pretty major crises.”

You will no doubt be shocked to learn that the federal liberal government may have tried to politically influence an agency that should be independent. Who would have thought? Evidence released at an inquiry into the Portapique massacre seems to indicate that government officials the RCMP commissioner to release information about a weapon used by the shooter. We don't know yet if the request came from the government, or the commissioner herself. We don't know yet if the Prime Minister or Public Safety Minister were personally involved. But what do we know? What needs to happen next? In short? That it was a huge mess. But that's not enough. An inquiry is trying to get to the bottom of the police response to the worst mass shooting in Canadian history, and around every corner seems to lurk a new detail about delays, misinformation, too many commanding officers and, above all, inaction. As Canadians learned in horror how police in Uvalde, Texas stood by while a shooter was murdering children in a school, they didn't have to look hard for a Canadian example of how utterly a response to a gunman can be botched. So what are the details? What do we still have to learn? And will there be any change, consequences or closure?GUEST: Greg Mercer, Atlantic Canada reporter, The Globe and Mail

The RCMP was largely silent then, and continued to obscure the actions of denturist Gabriel Wortman after an officer shot and killed him at a gas station during a chance encounter. Though retired as an investigative journalist and author, Paul Palango spent much of his career reporting on Canada's troubled national police force.
