I know there was some cool Catholic stuff about the diocese of Las Vegas becoming the 34th Archdiocese in the US and we'll get to that and Neil and I plan on releasing an episode about that next week. In this episode Neil and I talk about what's really important…The Rankin/Bass movie from 1982 “Flight of Dragons”. I know you've never seen it, I know you've never heard of it, but it's a fairytale that marks the beginning of the modern broken fairytale and the conversion of Magic into Science. We have an interesting conversion, but keep in mind, we're both a few whiskeys in at this point… Gratuitous sound clips * The Flight of Dragons (Title Song) - Don McLean (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogsNTmPAIaE) * LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition - Bree (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmghV5AimjU&t=13s) * Wizard of Oz, Scarecrow's Mathematical Error... POP ART, WHERE WE FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE. That's right, it's episode 100. I've reached a milestone. WHAT A DRAG: Join me and filmmaker and podcaster Donald McKinney, III (The Real Short Box, The Blue Beetle) as we talk The Flight of Dragons and Dragonslayer, two films about young people fighting dragons. “All hail Casiodorus Rex, dragonslayer!” Look. Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. It's super…No, it's a…dragon?… Sounds like it's time for Episode 100 of Pop Art. Yes, you heard that right. This is the 100th episode of my podcast. Huzzah, huzzah. I can't believe I got here, but here I am. It's the podcast where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie/foreign side of cinema with a connection to it. Today, I am happy to welcome as my guest, filmmaker and podcaster Donald McKinney, III, who was my very first guest on Pop Art and who showed me the ropes. Donald has chosen as his film the animated The Flight of Dragons, while I have chosen the more SFX spectacular Dragonslayer, both films about young people who have to battle a dragon. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is it about dragons anyway? What are our favorite dragons? Nudity in a Disney film? What was it about the sexualization of teens in the 70s and 80s? Why was Flight of Dragons banned on Israeli TV? What does "Vermithrax Pejorative" translate as? What are the differences between the book The Dragon and the George and the film Flight of Dragons? What is the connection of Dragonslayer to the Star War series? What is a George? How did Peter MacNicol get this role? The lesser known of the late-70s-early-80s Rankin-Bass fantasy movies, The Flight of Dragons is also the most intriguing one, mostly due to how little was known going into watching it. The Last Unicorn and Tolkien movies might be beloved, but should this one be too? And besides dragons flying, what even happens in this thing? This week I take on the traditionally animated Rankin and Bass cult classic The Flight Of Dragons in what might be my nerdiest episode yet. [School of Movies 2016] This is a TV special movie from 1982 made by Rankin Bass (Thundercats/The Hobbit/Rudolph). It is essentially a Dungeons & Dragons adventure and very twee and earnest so you're going to have to leave your cynicism at the door. It's based on a book of speculative fiction by Peter Dickinson whereby he presents the theories on how dragons might actually have operated and flown. This is woven very loosely into some of the narrative of another book named The Dragon and the George, by Gordon R. Dickson. This is a movie I grew up with and has been pretty much forgotten by history. It has received minimal home releases, virtually everyone involved in its undocumented production has passed away and now only its scant few fans keep its memory alive. So in accordance, we brought in newcomers to the film Lorin Grieve (A Year of Steam) and Jerome McIntosh (GameBurst) and went ridiculously deep on it, covering every moment to bring you all along on the adventure. We swear quite a bit though, as we have to assess this with adult eyes, so kids are going to have to wait for this one. The good news if you're American is that you can rent this on Amazon instant video for $3 (or buy it for $10), the DVD is harder to come by, especially in the UK where you may even have to resort to VHS. Guests: Lorin Grieve of Year of Steam Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst
One of Jon’s favourite films from his youth is a 1982 Rankin Bass animated fantasy called The Flight of Dragons, something he maintains is more than good enough to provide enjoyment to an adult.
