I'm always looking for indie filmmaking models to study. I like to analyze how other filmmakers make successful indie films while doing through a new DIY method, self distributing their film or achieving critical and fan respect for their work.Well I found a film that checks all the boxes, For Lovers Only create by the Polish Brothers, Michael and Mark Polish (more on that film later). These filmmakers have been making films, on their terms, for over a decade now.Since premiering at Sundance with their debut feature, 1999's Twin Falls Idaho, the brothers have remained steadfast in their commitment to creating personal, character-driven films.How does one make money shooting a feature film on a DSLR? The film in question came from a screenplay that Mark Polish wrote more than a decade ago called For Lovers Only, about an American photographer who runs into an old flame while on assignment in Paris. The film follows the rekindled lovers around Paris, France in a series of quiet vignettes that gradually reveal more about the complications in the couples' lives.Related: DSLR Video Tips: How to Make Your DSLR Film or Video Look More CinematicInspired by the guerilla style of the French New Wave filmmakers of yesteryear, Mark and Michael Polish came up with a simple plan: they'd fly over to France with only a Canon 5D Mark II camera (which they already owned) and one actress (Castle star Stana Katic) in tow and just go out and shoot feature film. Marion Meadows is an innovative saxophonist, composer and contemporary jazz artist who has released 13 albums - his first in 1990.  Early in his career, Marion studied with several of the masters including Joe Henderson and Eddie Daniels.  His first big break came when Norman Connors asked him to join his band.  Marion's first album, "For Lovers Only," was a big success and he remains one of the top jazz saxophonists today.  In our November 2016 interview with Coool CAT's Ray White, Marion talks about his latest release, "Soul Traveler."  On this release, he expands his repertoire including elements of R&B and Funk.  Marion also looks back and shares some highlights of his career.  Coool CAT's "Hostess with the Mostest" Lisa Davis, adds addtional insights into Marion and also features Blues legend, Bonnie Raitt, on her "Spotlight" segment.  For addtional information on our shows visit www.cooolcat.com

Steve Cooper talks with actor/writer/director Mark Polish. Mark broke onto the independent filmmaking scene at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999 with the premiere of his first film Twin Falls Idaho, an atmospheric and heartfelt tale of conjoined twins, which he co-wrote and starred in with his identical twin brother Michael Polish. His second film, Jackpot, received the John Cassavetes Best Independent Film Award at the 2001 Spirit Awards and the New American Cinema Award at the 2001 Seattle International Film Festival. His third film, Northfolk, premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival and was hailed by Roger Ebert as “a masterpiece.” For Lovers Only, a black and white homage to the French New Wave, starred him and Stana Katic as regretful former lovers reunited in France by fate. The film was released on iTunes where it remained at number one for three weeks. His next film, Headlock, which he wrote, directed and stars alongside Dianna Agron, will premiere in 2016. Filmed on location in over 15 countries, the story centers on married intelligence traffickers battling nano-terrorism. He also co-wrote The Declaration of Independent Filmmaking, a practical guide to writing, shooting, editing, scoring and distributing films, published by Harcourt.

While we (Sheryll and Pam) did laugh at how nervous we were during our first few shows, I think giving a little a more detail and clips from our past shows along with following up on some promised research will help get all of our STR friends and Stana fans up-to-speed.
